Newcastle ‘continue talks’ for Dean Henderson

Newcastle United have continued talks with Manchester United over signing Dean Henderson, as per 90min journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeper pursuit

According to a report by the Daily Mail from 21 March, the Magpies had drawn up a list of potential goalkeeper targets ahead of the summer transfer window, with Eddie Howe keen to increase competition for first-choice Martin Dubravka.

Old Trafford shot-stopper Henderson was linked with a move to St James’ Park in January, with the 25-year-old having failed to dislodge David de Gea as the Red Devils’ first-choice. However, negotiations were swiftly concluded when the Manchester club raised the possibility of Dubravka going in the opposite direction.

The Latest: Henderson talks continue

Taking to Twitter, Bailey has shared the latest news on the Magpies’ pursuit of Henderson, claiming: “Newcastle continue talks with Man Utd over Dean Henderson.”

In the corresponding 90min article, he reported that the Tyneside club are long-term admirers of the former Sheffield United loanee, with the goalkeeper having made it clear that he wants to play regular first-team football.

It is understood that negotiations have yet to determine whether an agreement will involve a permanent transfer or a loan move.

The Verdict: Good move for Henderson

With Henderson having failed to play a single minute of Premier League football across the entire 2021/22 campaign, the 25-year-old will need to move elsewhere if he is to establish himself as a potential England number one.

Newcastle could be the perfect destination to achieve that mission, given the club’s huge ambition and upwards trajectory.

From Howe’s perspective, the Magpies will be getting an up-and-coming young prospect, who former Blades teammate Sander Berge labelled “exceptional”.

However, with Henderson’s contract set to run until 2025, Newcastle may be quoted a substantial fee by Erik ten Hag’s side; and with the player’s current £120,000 weekly wage topping Dubravka’s reported £38,000 per week, this won’t be a cheap deal for PIF to get over the line.

Hearts eye up permanent Woodburn move

Hearts are keen on making midfielder Ben Woodburn’s loan move from Liverpool a permanent one this summer.

The Lowdown: Productive loan spell

The Welshman joined the Scottish Premiership side on a temporary basis last summer and enjoyed a fruitful campaign away from Anfield.

Woodburn scored three goals and registered one assist in 24 league appearances, also winning one Match of the Match award from WhoScored.

It appears as though Woodburn is surplus to requirements at Liverpool, and with his contract expiring this month, he could well leave the club for good.

The Latest: Hearts want permanent deal

According to The Scotsman, Hearts manager Robbie Neilsen wants to sign the 22-year-old permanently this summer.

It is also claimed that Woodburn is ‘open’ to the idea of joining the Scottish outfit for good, having enjoyed his time there to date.

The Verdict: Right time to leave

Woodburn is a talented young player who once threatened to be a future superstar, having become Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer of all time back in 2016.

He has been hailed as a ‘perfect’ talent by Jurgen Klopp, but despite this, now feels like the logical time for him to move on and join a new permanent club.

Woodburn is clearly no part of Liverpool’s future plans, given the number of loan spells he has had, but there is no shame in not making the grade for such a great team.

Tottenham to hire Rangers chief Scoulding

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly now set to lose chief scout Andy Scoulding this summer.

The Lowdown: 2017 appointment

Scoulding was appointed as chief scout at Ibrox back in 2017, where he was tasked with helping the rebuild of the club after going into administration in 2012.

In his first season, he brought in the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Jack, who have since gone on to become regulars for the Gers, while he also helped sign the likes of Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Glen Kamara, among many others in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad today.

The Latest: Tottenham deal

Writing in his latest piece for The Daily Telegraph, reliable journalist Mike McGrath has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are now close to appointing Scoulding, who will work under Fabio Paratici.

He is thought of highly at the Light Blues, but he now looks set to join Spurs this summer.

The Verdict: Big blow

Of course, it will be a big blow for the Teddy Bears to lose Scoulding, given the work that he has done over the last few years.

If they are to wrestle the Scottish Premiership title back off of bitter rivals Celtic, their recruitment will need to be spot on, and they could do with Scoulding’s knack of spotting hidden gems.

Nonetheless, the board will now need to bring in a replacement quickly, given that the window is now officially open for business.

Leeds keen on signing Romeo Lavia

Leeds United ‘have an interest’ in signing Belgian youngster Romeo Lavia in the summer transfer window, according to reliable journalist Mike McGrath.

The Lowdown: Lavia an emerging talent

The 18-year-old is currently on Manchester City’s books, having joined the reigning Premier League champions from Anderlecht back in 2020.

Lavia has won ten caps for Belgium’s Under-18s side, as well as one for the Under-21s, catching the eye with his performances in midfield with 60 appearances across the various levels at City.

With the Belgian unlikely to make a quick breakthrough at a club packed with world class superstars though – his current deal expires in 2024 – it could be that he moves on to pastures new this summer, in order to continue his development.

The Latest: Leeds keen on move

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, McGrath confirmed that Leeds are interested in acquiring Lavia’s signature:

“LUFC have an interest in Belgium U21 midfielder Romeo Lavia, who was part of the MCFC 1st team squad last season, as they look to strengthen that area of squad for Jesse Marsch next season”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-45/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One for the future

While Lavia wouldn’t arrive as an immediate key player at Leeds – he is yet to make a single Premier League appearance – he would come in as an exciting one for the future – Sam Lee of The Athletic even says there are some within the Etihad who believe he could be a first-team regular there.

Jesse Marsch could initially deploy the ‘highly rated’ (Lee) talent in the Under-23s, allowing him regular football, before eventually blooding him as a regular part of his squad.

Planning for the long-term future is vital at Elland Road, ensuring the club continues to build for many years to come and doesn’t end up fighting relegation again, and players of Lavia’s quality are key to that happening.

Everton eye Man City midfielder Zinchenko

Everton are reportedly now eyeing up a move for Oleksandr Zinchenko as a potential alternative to Harry Winks.

The Lowdown: Contact made

The Goodison Park outfit have reportedly made contact over the potential signing of Winks, who is expected to cost them around £20m to arrive from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, if that deal falls through, then they will have to look at other targets to strengthen the central midfield position given the inconsistency of players like Andre Gomes, who could well leave this summer.

The Latest: Zinchenko eyed

Taking to Twitter, The Liverpool Echo journalist Christopher Beesley has revealed that Zinchenko, who has also been linked with a move to the Merseyside club, ‘remains a transfer option’ for Frank Lampard as a potential alternative to Winks:

“Oleksandr Zinchenko remains a transfer option for Everton with the Manchester City player offering Frank Lampard a potential alternative to Harry Winks.”

The Verdict: Zinchenko is better

If the Toffees were to sign one, they should be signing Zinchenko over Winks.

A player who thrives in many different positions across the pitch, including in midfield, his teammate Kyle Walker has even gone as far as to claim that he is ‘more gifted’ than Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having seen him feature at left-back for City in the Premier League, Blues supporters would have caught a glimpse of what he can do in midfield when he impressed for Ukraine in their FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final win against Scotland, as The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope dubbed him ‘superhuman‘.

Zinchenko would also bring an added winning mentality as a multiple title-winner with City.

West Ham make contact over Broja transfer

West Ham United have reportedly made contact with fellow Premier League club Chelsea over a potential summer move for Armando Broja.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones had this to say about whether or not Chelsea had offered Broja and money in exchange for Hammers midfielder Declan Rice.

He said: “So far, that hasn’t happened. West Ham have made contact, and it’s been about what’s his figure. And Chelsea have basically stuck a price tag on him that West Ham aren’t going to touch, which is between 40 and 50 million. So, at the moment, there hasn’t been any negotiating around that.”

A product of Chelsea’s youth system, the striker has made 54 appearances for the west London club across their senior and youth teams, scoring 21 goals in the process.

After completing a loan spell with Vitesse Arnhem in which he scored 11 goals in 34 appearances, the centre-forward was moved out of Stamford Bridge on loan again last summer. This time, the 20-year-old got his first full taste of regular Premier League action as he made 38 appearances for Southampton.

During his time with the Saints, the youngster found the net nine times in total, with six of those coming in his 32 league appearances for the south coast club.

Moyes will be thrilled

To further highlight the attacking talent he delivered last season in the top flight, only James Ward-Prowse (51) and Che Adams (49) racked up more shots at goal than Broja (48) among Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

This shows just how capable he is of being a regular goal threat in the Premier League.

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to suggest that David Moyes would be thrilled that West Ham have been in contact with Chelsea over a potential move for the young striker this summer, especially since the Hammers only have Michail Antonio as a natural centre-forward.

However, with the reported price tag of €40m-€50m (£34.7m-£43.3m) that Jones mentioned being put on the player, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not the two clubs would be willing to negotiate a deal which would suit all parties.

Nonetheless, even if it would take a substantial transfer fee to get Broja to the London Stadium, this would be an investment worth making given his young age and clear attacking capabilities.

West Ham: Moyes "pushing" for Lingard

West Ham United boss David Moyes is reportedly driving the club’s pursuit of Jesse Lingard, with the Englishman available on a free transfer this summer.

What’s the word?

As per 90min’s Toby Cudworth, the former Everton boss is said to be “pushing” the Hammers to sign the 29-year-old, with the versatile forward having previously shone on loan at the London Stadium.

Writing on Twitter about the ongoing situation, the journalist stated: “Unsurprisingly it’s David Moyes pushing #WHUFC to sign Jesse Lingard – a saga to say the least but the Scot is hopeful an agreement can be reached. Will be high wages and agent fees if a deal is eventually done.”

In the attached piece, the report suggests that the 32-cap international would become one of the highest earners at the east London outfit, with a reported salary of around £100k-per-week.

Supporters will love it

As Cudworth alluded to, the situation regarding the Manchester United academy graduate is becoming something of a ‘saga’, with it having previously appeared a relatively easy deal to push through following the confirmation of his departure from Old Trafford.

This latest update will, however, spark renewed excitement among the Irons faithful, with it looking as if the £16.2m-rated gem is edging ever closer to a return to the club where he had briefly rejuvenated his career during the second half of the 2020/21 season.

That six-month spell saw the £80k-per-week forward bag nine goals and register a further four assists in just 16 Premier League games, helping to secure an impressive sixth-place finish and the subsequent Europa League qualification.

Having enjoyed something of a renaissance under Moyes, it had looked as if Lingard would be returning on a permanent deal last summer, only to eventually stay at his parent club for another year.

That decision has backfired spectacularly with the Warrington-born playmaker going on to start just two top-flight games all season, although he was perhaps deserving of a more prominent role after a strong start to the campaign, notably netting a stunning late winner away at West Ham back in September.

Supporters can now start to believe that he will be producing such moments of magic again next term, albeit this time in a claret and blue jersey.

Everton interested in Rodrio Becao

Everton are plotting a bid for Udinese’s Brazilian centre-back Rodrigo Becao.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who wrote on his website that negotiations between the two clubs are underway.

There is said to still be distance between the two sides, but things are progressing slowly.

It was reported back in mid-June that the Toffees were interested alongside Tottenham Hotspur, but it appears that the former has now stepped up their pursuit and could land their man.

Previous reports suggest he could cost in the region of €20m (£17m).

He could be Mina 2.0

Everton’s Yerry Mina has impressed when he has been available, but those moments have been too inconsistent to make him a reliable force at the back for the Blues.

It could therefore make this signing all the more intelligent, as they replace one hulking defender with another.

Standing at 6 foot 2, the defender was ever-present at the back for Udinese last season. He featured in 35 league games this season, which immediately makes him more useful than Mina, who only managed a measly 13 appearances.

Throughout these outings, he boasted a sold 6.83 average SofaScore rating. He is a defender who first and foremost loves to defend and operates well in a back three due to a lack of speed.

This could therefore be a tactical signing by Frank Lampard, who often tried to make a 3-5-2 formation work at the back end of last season.

The stats also back up this love for defending, as he ranked third in tackles made in the whole of the Seria A, ranking in the 96th percentile for tackles and 93rd percentile for pressures per 90.

Brazilian journalist Bruno Queiroz only needed one word to describe the defender: “insurmountable”. Everton have lacked a character such as this, who can perform consistently and not add to their ever-growing list of hospital cases.

In signing the 26-year-old Brazilian, who is younger and clearly fit more often, the Toffees can find a potential Mina upgrade who could have the same effect when he plays, but actually be fit enough to play often.

Leeds: Granada linked with Kiko Casilla

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has emerged as a target for Spanish club Granada.

The Lowdown: Elche loan

Casilla spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan with Elche after the Whites brought in Kristoffer Klaesson as backup to Illan Meslier last summer.

The 35-year-old made just 16 appearances last term before becoming second choice, keeping five clean sheets. He wasn’t part of the 26-man squad which headed to Australia for a pre-season tour, and it looks as if he could follow in the footsteps of Raphinha with a move to Spain, with Jesse Marsch’s side agreeing a fee with Barcelona for the Brazil winger.

The Latest: Granada linked with Casilla

Sport Witness relayed an update from Grada3 in the last 48 hours regarding Casilla on Wednesday.

They claimed that Granada are after a ‘keeper this summer, with the Spanish veteran now on their list of targets. The report adds that the final 12 months of his contract at Elland Road could even be terminated.

The Verdict: Get him gone

Labelled a “complete liability” by Leeds TV podcaster Oscar Mario, Casilla clearly isn’t in Jesse Marsch’s plans for the upcoming campaign, otherwise, you’d expect he would have travelled down under.

Therefore, moving the Spaniard on over the coming weeks could be best for all involved.

Leeds are also on the hunt for a new experienced ‘keeper of their own, with Ben Foster’s name mentioned, which shows again that Casilla doesn’t appear to be in the frame for Marsch’s first full season in charge at Elland Road.

Villa open to selling Chukwuemeka

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are now open to selling Carney Chukwuemeka for £20m this summer.

The Lowdown: Chukwuemeka in demand

Having been given his senior debut by Dean Smith towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign, the 18-year-old went on to make 12 first-team appearances last term, all in the Premier League.

Although his exposure to senior football remains minimal, the midfielder has very much been a man in demand recently, according to a litany of transfer reports. In recent days, Barcelona, Manchester United and Newcastle have all been linked with the teenager.

Chukwuemeka has made an impression on the pitch during the summer, scoring in the final as England triumphed in the European Under-19 Championship recently and being named in the team of the tournament.

The Latest: Villa open to Chukwuemeka sale

Romano took to Twitter on Saturday night to make a significant claim about Villa’s stance on Chukwuemeka.

Steven Gerrard’s side could be open to parting ways with the young midfielder, putting a £20m price tag on his head with less than 12 months remaining on his current contract at Villa Park.

He notified his followers: “Aston Villa are now open to selling Carney Chukwuemeka – they have set an asking price around £20m for the player who’s in the last year of his contract. Barcelona lead the chase ahead of a host of European elite clubs, as revealed earlier this week.”

The Verdict: Think carefully

On surface level, it could make perfect sense for Villa to accept offers of £20m or more for Chukwuemeka, given how little senior football he has played and his comparatively meagre Transfermarkt valuation of just £5.4m.

However, Johan Lange and co must also consider the sheer potential that they could jettison if they sanction the 18-year-old’s sale. His aforementioned underage exploits hint at a player who is in flying form, while Gerrard himself has backed him to become “a big player for Aston Villa”.

Also, with doubts over the futures of Morgan Sanson and Douglas Luiz at Villa Park, the club must be careful not to leave themselves threadbare in the middle of the pitch by also allowing Chukwuemeka to depart. For now, he is player very much worth keeping around, and there is still ample time to get his contract situation sorted.
