Ajmal masterclass stuns South Africa

The Cape Town pitch was expected to make Saeed Ajmal a central figure towards the end of the Test but he made a massive impact on the second day itself

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran15-Feb-2013

The Cape Town pitch was expected to make Saeed Ajmal a central figure towards the end of the Test but he made an impact as early as the second day, first with the bat in a combative 64-run ninth-wicket stand and then, far more damagingly, with a mesmerising display of spin bowling that left South Africa stuttering for the first time in their home summer.Though this was not a tailor-made turner for Ajmal, and it had been widely predicted to be a great day for batting, he got the ball to rear up and fizz off the track in an unbroken 25-over spell that could well end up as his greatest performance. The mighty South African batting was nonplussed, and an hour before stumps there was even the outside chance of them being forced to follow-on. And this wasn’t even one of those old South African teams who were frazzled by the sight of the turning ball.Though Pakistan had three specialist quick bowlers, they turned to Ajmal as early as the 12th over, and he bowled unchanged from midway through the second session to stumps. Tanvir Ahmed was a disappointment with the new ball, bowling only around 120kph and not troubling the batsmen much, though he put in an improved second spell. The other two fast bowlers, Umar Gul and debutant Mohammad Irfan, were both regularly around 140kph, but the closest either of them came to a wicket was when Gul had Graeme Smith jabbing a simple catch to second slip, only for the usually reliable Younis Khan to grass the ball.Smart stats

Pakistan’s total of 338 is their highest in Tests in South Africa. Their previous best was 329 in Johannesburg exactly 15 years ago.

Vernon Philander’s 5 for 59 is his ninth five-for in 15 Tests. In Cape Town he has taken 26 wickets in four Tests at an average of 12.30.

Saeed Ajmal’s 5 for 41 is his first five-for against South Africa. In two previous Tests against them he had taken four wickets at 84.75.

The last time a spinner took a five-for in the opposition’s first innings in a Cape Town Test was way back in 1970, when Ashley Mallett took 5 for 126.

For the first time in Test cricket, two batsmen scored 111 in a Test innings. The highest individual score by two batsmen in an innings is 234, by Don Bradman and Sid Barnes against England in 1946.

It was left to Ajmal to do the damage, and he duly delivered a masterclass of spin bowling. Just when the openers were looking settled, Ajmal struck in his second over, getting Smith lbw on the sweep. The umpire turned down the appeal but Ajmal emphatically and repeatedly asked his team-mates to go for the review, which resulted in Smith being sent on his way. He had more success soon after as Alviro Petersen nicked to short leg where Azhar Ali pulled off a smart, low catch.Ajmal’s battle with Hashim Amla, the world’s top-ranked batsman, was engrossing, with Amla repeatedly using the reverse-sweep and also frequently shuffling across the stumps to try counter Ajmal. Though Amla seemed to have got on top of Ajmal when he picked off a couple of leg-side boundaries in successive overs, Ajmal emerged the winner as he rapped Amla on the back foot to get him lbw, again after using the DRS.The DRS has already been one of the most controversial innovations in cricket, diving opinion on many levels, and there was one more talking point when South Africa’s most experienced batsman, Jacques Kallis, was adjudged lbw on referral. He was originally given out caught at short leg, and he immediately referred the decision, and the replays suggested there was no edge. The umpires then checked whether it was an lbw, and the predicted path said that it was just shaving leg stump, and that it would stick with the “umpire’s call”, though the umpire hadn’t ruled on whether the ball would hit the stumps. The rules state that when the mode of dismissal changes, the batsman should originally be considered to be not out, which means Kallis should have remained in the middle, but he was given out lbw after much confusion. That Kallis wicket had South Africa in deep trouble. Soon after, Ajmal produced what was perhaps the ball of the day, as he got one to zip from round the wicket past a befuddled Faf du Plessis, who could only edge it to the slips, where Younis safely pouched it to consign South Africa to 109 for 5.Several South African batsmen didn’t help themselves by taking a guard on or outside off stump, and virtually cut off the off side as a scoring area against Ajmal, adding to the pressure caused by the relentless probing by the spinner.AB de Villiers and Dean Elgar had some scares but survived the final hour to take South Africa past the follow-on mark to complete one of those rare days when the home side had been outplayed. It was all so different in the morning when Vernon Philander’s love affair with Newlands continued as he bagged another five-for – his ninth in 15 Tests. A quick close to the Pakistan innings seemed imminent when he took three wickets in his first three overs on the second day before Tanvir and Ajmal lifted Pakistan to their highest total in South Africa with a 64-run partnership. With the ball swerving around, regularly beating the bat and most of the runs being scored through streaky edges past the slips or the leg stump, South Africa were looking forward to an early end to the innings. There was little sign that Tanvir and Ajmal would prove so hard to dislodge. With the pitch easing up, though, they began to look increasingly solid. Ahmed punched Morne Morkel past long-on for four, and Ajmal raised his front foot as he smacked Dale Steyn over midwicket for a boundary, a shot he’ll treasure as much as any of his wickets today. It wasn’t till just before lunch that the pair were separated, after which it was all about Ajmal and his bewitching brand of spin bowling.

I had no involvement in captaincy change – McCullum

Brendon McCullum has said he is concerned for his predecessor as well as the team as it tries to pull itself together ahead of a tough tour of South Africa

Brendon McCullum, who took over as New Zealand captain under controversial circumstances after Ross Taylor refused an offer to remain as the leader of the Test team in a split-captaincy scenario, has said he is concerned for his predecessor as well as the team ahead of a tough tour of South Africa. Taylor has asked for a break and will not be travelling to South Africa.”I’m more concerned now with how the team is handling the situation and where we go from here – how we try and galvanise the unit, rather than my own individual accolade of picking up the captaincy,” McCullum told reporters at a press conference in Lincoln. “I’m obviously worried for Ross and how he is dealing with things at the moment, and obviously how we try and ensure that we pull together this team inside a very short space of time for what is going to be an incredibly tough tour.”McCullum said he had been in touch with Taylor, who said on Friday he felt he never had the support of New Zealand coach Mike Hesson. “I’ve spoken to him a couple of times – two days ago and then left a message with him again this morning – but he obviously needs a little bit of space at the moment as well, and I thought he did a really good job yesterday with the media of being able to deal with some tough circumstances,” McCullum said. “Ross is an integral member of this team and he’s vitally important to us in terms of how we’re going to try and increase our performances. He’s also a very popular member of the team as well and there’s a lot of guys that will be feeling for him at the moment – we will welcome him back when he’s good and ready.”I know it hasn’t been a great process with the way it’s unfolded and I know there is a lot of anger towards it.”I guess from our point of view, we now need to try and move forward and get some faith back into this team and build some rapport with the public because that’s obviously taken a hit over the last seven days.”McCullum was upset at speculation that he may have had a role to play in the entire episode. “That’s probably the thing that has come out through this week that’s annoyed me the most. I guess that cuts right to the bone that someone would question your integrity and your character like that.”I guess it’s been mentioned on a number of occasions and to be totally honest, it is highly insulting, for people to cast aspersions when they certainly don’t know the full circumstances.”From my point of view, I had absolutely no involvement in that recommendation whatsoever. I was asked if I would lead the one-day and Twenty20 teams two days ago, and then yesterday I was asked if I would lead the Test team, after Ross turned it down so about as much involvement I’ve had in this situation.”Relations between Taylor and himself, McCullum said, were very good. “It’s only really been media hype and fiction over the last 16 months, since the captaincy selection of Ross, which tried to drive a wedge between Ross and I.”In terms of the public profile, we’ve got a very good and respectful relationship. We know each other, we’ve played with each other for a very long time and we know each others families.”McCullum hoped to welcome Taylor back to the New Zealand side and sympathised with Taylor for the situation he finds himself in. “I don’t want to sit here and talk about how hard it’s been on me, because it’s certainly been a lot harder on other people, but you know that as long as, through your dealings, that you are honest and you maintain your integrity throughout, then you can look yourself in the eye and know that you’re doing the right thing.”Now Ross is going through some tough times and my thoughts are with him.”When he is good and ready to come back, then we’ll certainly welcome him back, and I’ll be looking to help him as much as I possibly can to reach the standards he wants to reach in this game, to be an integral member of this team and play a vital part in that.”

'Team needs hundreds from batsmen' – Taylor

Ross Taylor said that New Zealand failed to capitalise on the chances they had and should have been able to draw the first Test in North Sound

Losing two quick wickets in the first session was the turning point in New Zealand’s bid to save the first Test, captain Ross Taylor has said. New Zealand began the fifth day needing the middle order to use as much time as possible to eke out a draw but Kemar Roach’s quick wickets – Ross Taylor in the 11th over and, two overs later, Kane Williamson for a duck – undermined those plans.”We had a chance to realistically draw the match. But losing two wickets – myself, Kane [Williamson] and [later] Dan’s [Vettori] wickets – was key. Everyone got a start in most of the games, here we just lost our way and lost momentum,” Taylor said. “Hopefully the top order can continue scoring runs, and us middle order can score some runs and help them out.”New Zealand started well in both the innings but ceded the advantage as the later batsmen failed to capitalise. In the first innings, New Zealand scored 351 after being two wickets down for 223 and in the second, they collapsed to 272 from 194 for 2. Taylor also pointed out to the failure of the set batsmen to convert their half-centuries into big hundreds. Guptill was out for 97 in the first innings and McCullum for 84 in the second.”This hasn’t been the problem in the last couple of years, this has been a problem with New Zealand cricket for the last 10-15 years now. Players haven’t gone on to score hundreds. To be competitive in Test cricket for long periods of time, you need to score hundreds and you need to be hard on yourself when you don’t. 80s and 90s are good for your stats, but the team needs hundreds.”A lot of that was because of pressure from West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, who picked up a wicket every time New Zealand looked settled and pose the same sort of threat as did Chris Gayle with the bat. Narine, named man-of-the-match, picked up eight wickets while Gayle hit 214 runs after being dropped early in the first innings once.”They are a side that relies heavily on Narine and Gayle to do well for them. Gayle batted very well and gave us an opportunity but we didn’t take it. Narine, if he is not taking wickets, doesn’t go for lot of runs. I was pleased with the team in the way we played him. There were a few soft dismissals in the fist innings against him but other than that we played him really well.”An unlikely batsman to put up a fight against Narine and Roach on the fifth morning was debutant Neil Wagner, who played 103 balls for his 13. However, he had a tough match with the ball, managing one wicket off 38 overs.”He [Wagner] bowled well in periods. He might be a nightwatchman for the rest of his career. He did a good job there. He has had a successful run with Otago and now he knows what his cricket is all about and I am sure it will be better for us also.”Taylor is hopeful of an improved performance when the teams meet for the second Test, New Zealand’s last match on this tour, at Sabina Park from August 2. New Zealand have so far managed a solitary win on the tour – in the third ODI at Basseterre.”We have got one more game to go, and improve in a couple of areas. I don’t think we are very far away,” Taylor said.

Southee works on batting in bid to cement Test spot

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee, who failed to make the Test squad for the upcoming Caribbean tour, has said that he has been using the off-season to work on his batting, in a bid to cement his place in the Test side in the future

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee, who failed to make the Test squad for the upcoming Caribbean tour, has said that he has been using the off-season to work on his batting, in a bid to cement his place in the Test side in the future.Southee, 23, played in South Africa’s last Test series, in March against South Africa, but was dropped after conceding 140 runs for no wicket in the first Test. He said that being dropped from the side was an eye opener. “It’s not a nice feeling being left out. It’s been a kick up the backside for me,” Southee told .He said that he hoped to contribute as an allrounder in future and that he worked with New Zealand batting mentor Bob Carter to improve his batting. “I have to go out and score some runs. It’s something that I’ve wanted to work on and now having a few months off, it would have been a waste not to do some work on it.”For me, if we can get our bowlers scoring runs, then that’s got to be a good thing for New Zealand cricket and I want to be a part of that; to contribute with the bat as well as with the ball and not make so many silly decisions when I bat.”Southee, who has scored 485 runs from 17 Tests at an average of 20.20, said that he hoped New Zealand’s lower order could emulate that of England and score runs regularly. “Hopefully we’re making progress,” he said. “It makes it tough as a bowler, when you know the opposition’s tail isn’t just going to fold.”New Zealand’s seamers will head to Brisbane on Saturday for a stint with head coach John Wright before joining the rest of the side heading to the West Indies via Florida at the end of the month.Southee said that he had worked on his action as well, in the lead up to the limited-overs leg of the Caribbean tour. “I just needed to change a couple of things in my action,” he said. “It wasn’t major, I was just rushing through the crease. I’m more of a rhythm bowler but I was trying to muscle it down, so I was losing the bounce I get and the swing.”New Zealand will play two Twenty20 internationals, five ODIs and two Test matches during the five week tour.Edited by Carlyle Laurie
