Finn has faith in ability to adjust

Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2010Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month, and expects the crowd at Adelaide for Thursday’s second warm-up match against South Australia to play their part in trying to unsettle an unusually issue-free England squad.England’s victory in their opening first-class warm-up match in Perth last week was the first time in 45 years that they had launched an Ashes tour with a win, and Finn played an important part in that effort, having overcome a tricky first spell to return decent match figures of 3 for 115 in 34 overs.”We copped a bit of abuse at the WACA last week in that last innings,” Finn told reporters in Adelaide. “It’s something we’re prepared for, we’ll embrace and we’re going to try to enjoy. Friendly banter is good – to make sure we’re accessible as people, we’re human beings as well, and everyone’s got a sense of humour.”You can see the funny side when people are chirping you. It’s part of what we have to expect as international cricketers, and to be able to deal with that is important.”While he couldn’t claim to be entirely happy with his efforts, Finn was nevertheless pleased that he was able to adjust his length to suit the WACA wicket, having started the game with a length that was far too full for the conditions. By the final day, however, he had settled into a decent rhythm that boded well for future challenges.”I slid around in the footholds in the first innings a little bit – but I don’t want to make excuses,” said Finn. “I’m not the sort of person who is going to sit there and say it was because of the footholds I was bowling full.”It might have contributed. But I didn’t bowl well in my first spell and went for three or four an over – which is something I don’t want to do in Australia. I adapted and managed to bowl better lengths. It’s important that process happens quicker in future.”With 32 wickets in his eight Tests to date, and with an imposing 6’8″ frame that ought to be well-suited to Australia conditions, Finn has been earmarked as a vital part of England’s attack, even though he has never before set foot in the country. With that in mind, he is trying not to worry about getting everything right at once.”I was happy with how I bowled towards the end of the first innings,” he said. “It was that first spell that I wasn’t happy with at all. But I’m 21 years old, and understand that I’m going to be inconsistent every now and again. But it’s important that I don’t settle for that and I try to make myself better each time I go out and bowl – and learn every time too.”England are expected to name an unchanged side for the South Australia match, with Alastair Cook the only major concern form-wise, following his scores of 5 and 9 at the WACA. However, England’s coach, Andy Flower, dismissed any doubts, saying: “It’s one game, two innings. I think he’s going to do well.”

LEI DO EX

A ESQUERDA PARECIA O CAMINHO. PARECIA…

Pundit backs Liverpool legend to leave

Roberto Firmino may consider leaving Liverpool this summer due to Sadio Mane’s shift into the middle, says former top flight manager Alex McLeish.

The Lowdown: Firmino down the pecking order

The Brazilian has become an undisputed Reds legend since joining from Hoffenheim back in 2015, winning the Premier League and Champions League, not to mention leading the line superbly.

Firmino finds himself down the attacking pecking order these days, however, with Mohamed Salah, Mane, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota all arguably seen as stronger options by Jurgen Klopp, especially since Mane moved to a central role after Diaz’s arrival in January.

The 30-year-old’s current Liverpool deal runs out at the end of next season and the idea of him leaving this summer hasn’t been completely ruled out.

The Latest: Pundit casts doubt over future

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish admitted that he could see Firmino moving on due to the shift Klopp has made in recent weeks with Mane, moving Firmino further down the striker pecking order.

Ultimately, he says, the decision will be up to the player himself:

“I think he’s still making an impact. You see him in games coming on and getting a couple of goals and assists. He’s still, I think, very integral to their success this season.

“Like everybody else, he will want to maybe play more football at the end. Who knows, maybe it suits him, the way it is just now. One thing’s for sure, Liverpool are a great club and will do the right thing by their players.

“They will do whatever Firmino wants to do, I would think. Maybe keep him on and keep doing his cameo. Or does the guy want to play more football? I think that would be in Firmino’s hands.”

The Verdict: Don’t leave, Bobby

While it would be understandable if Firmino decided to enjoy a fresh challenge this summer, the hope with the vast majority of Liverpool fans is that he stays put.

At 30, he still has a huge amount to offer, even if his best days are behind him, and he is a perfect foil for different styles of players around him in attack. If he is content being a squad player, the matter should be settled immediately.

Firmino isn’t a player who is reliant on pace, which further highlights why he can be a force for years to come, and the idea of such a popular player leaving doesn’t bear thinking about.

Country must come before IPL, CLT20 – Clarke

Michael Clarke has said international players can find a way around hectic schedules, but it could involve giving the IPL and Champions League T20 an occasional miss

Michael Clarke, the Australia vice-captain, has said international players can find a way around hectic schedules, but it could involve giving the IPL and Champions League T20 an occasional miss to make sure they are at their best when playing for the country. Clarke was speaking on a day two of Australia’s first-choice players – Michael Hussey and Doug Bollinger – joined the squad, two days before the start of the Test series. India await their Chennai Super Kings players MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay.Clarke said the Australian team had no choice with Bollinger and Hussey, but he saw the positives in the fact that they were playing “tough” cricket, playing well, and winning it. Australia arrived in India in similar circumstances last year as well, with Brett Lee, Nathan Hauritz and Doug Bollinger joining the team on the eve of the first ODI after their Champions League commitments. Lee lasted one match in that series.Clarke was firm that the players needed to be wise while choosing where and when to play in a modern cricketing world full of opportunities. “For me, we all have a choice,” he said. “You don’t have to play IPL. You don’t have to play Champions League. For me, personally, right now it is about representing my country, and every game I can play for Australia, I will do that. That’s my priority. If, as an individual player, you are tired or your body needs some rest, you need to make that commitment outside of international cricket. You need to, maybe, play less in the IPL or play less in the Champions League.”Clarke and Mitchell Johnson are two high-profile Australia players to have not taken part in the IPL yet.Hectic schedules, he said, were part of a modern cricketer’s life. “There is obviously a lot of cricket on at the moment, but it’s a part of what you do as a professional athlete,” he said. “You train every day, and when you are not training, you are playing or travelling. I think it’s all about adapting and trying to make do as much as you can.”When we leave this tour, we have one day at home before we fly to Perth to play the Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka. So you have completely different conditions, completely different opposition, completely different format. So you have to be able to adjust, and that’s probably the toughest thing about cricket these days. You have three different formats, in so many different conditions around the world.”Like Australia, who have three days between the India tour and the home limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, India have five days between their last ODI against New Zealand and their first Test in South Africa. Clarke, however, said that players enjoyed the fact that there was so much cricket to choose from. “That’s a great challenge that you look forward to. Having success in all the different conditions in the world makes you a good international cricketer,” he said. “That’s probably the hardest thing: that you have to travel and play in so many different conditions. But there are so many positives. You get to experience so many different cultures. Different parts of the world. It certainly helps your cricket.”

Renê, a mesma coisa.

Celtic: Postecoglou must unleash Ralston

Celtic are back in action tomorrow with an SPFL clash against Ross County away from home to try and take another step towards securing the league title.

Last weekend saw the Hoops get knocked out of the semi-final of the Scottish Cup by Rangers in what was a disappointing afternoon for Ange Postecoglou and his side.

With that in mind, it could be bad news for County to have to come up against a wounded Celtic side looking to get back to winning ways.

However, one issue that the Bhoys will have to deal with is the absence of right-back Josip Juranovic, who will reportedly be out for the next couple of weeks through injury.

Despite this blow, it could pave the way for one Celtic figure to come in and shine for the team.

Opportunity knocks

Having only started one of Celtic’s six previous league games, Anthony Ralston has been in and out of the team since the turn of the year.

With 23 league appearances to his name in total this season, the right-back has shown what an attacking talent he can be by racking up four goals and seven assists.

Also, no other defender in Postecoglou’s squad has been able to have as many shots on target (13) or crosses (116) as the 23-year-old.

In addition to this, from a defensive point of view, only Juranovic (28) has won more tackles than the £1.62m-rated Scotsman (26).

This highlights just how much of a capable player Ralston is up and down the pitch and how much they will need someone like that while their other right-back is out injured, with the introduction of the 23-year-old potentially being a game-changer for the Bhoys.

Currently listed as the third-highest rated player at the Parkhead club, the full-back has earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.47 from WhoScored.

Labelled as a “soldier” on the pitch by Postecoglou, Ralston could use this time while the Croatian is recovering to really stake a claim that he should be the first-choice right-back at Parkhead.

Moving forward, in terms of the Hoops boss putting his starting XI together to take on County, he should have no reservations about putting the £10.5k-per-week Scotsman in from the beginning at right-back.

Zulqarnain Haider suffers fractured finger

Zulqarnain Haider, Pakistan’s highest-scoring batsman in the England series so far, is in danger of missing the third Test, starting on August 18 at the Oval, due a finger injury

Zulqarnain Haider is in danger of missing the remainder of the Test series due to a finger injury that could have been aggravated when Stuart Broad hurled a ball back at him in frustration during the second Test at Edgbaston. Haider is scheduled to meet a finger specialist when the team reaches London on Sunday and the team management will take a call – whether to send him back or retain him – based on the diagnosis.”He picked up a hairline fracture to his little finger. We don’t know yet if he will stay but we will wait to hear from the specialist,” Yawar Saeed, Pakistan’s manager told Cricinfo. It is believed that Haider started experiencing pain after being hit on his hand by Broad. Having stopped the ball in his follow through, Broad had thrown the ball back at Haider, who raised his hand to shield himself but was hit on the little finger. The incident happened on the third day of the Edgbaston Test during the second session when Haider and Mohammad Amir were involved in an inspired stonewalling effort. Broad, who admitted his fault, was fined half his match fee by Ranjan Madugalle, the ICC match referee.Haider, on the verge of earning the unwanted honour of getting a king pair on debut, went on to make a resolute 88which injected some steel into an otherwise deflated Pakistan batting. He had first hurt his little finger at a practice session at Leeds during the Australia series, and the pain resurfaced on the eve of the second day of the tour game against Worcestershire at New Road. Another team source told Cricinfo that Haider is all but set to return home soon. “The doctor has said that he [Haider] will take one month to heal with or without operation. So he is bound to be out of the series,” the official said.Haider complained of pain and subsequent X-rays at a local hospital in Worcester revealed a minor fracture to the bone in the finger, a step up from what was initially a minor injury.Haider was drafted into the team on the eve of the Edgbaston Test after the Pakistan team management felt their first-choice keeper Kamran Akmal needed to rest and sort out the mistakes he was committing with regularity. Akmal was struck on his right eye during practice on Friday and was holding an ice pack but is under no threat of missing out if called.Haider gained fair points for his technical skills behind the stumpseven if he failed to latch on to a couple of chances in the second innings.
