Gidman sets up vital victory

Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman hit his first century of the season as his team kept alive their hopes of a place in the semi-finals with a nine-wicket victory over the Netherlands at Bristol

ScorecardGloucestershire captain Alex Gidman hit his first century of the season as his team kept alive their hopes of a place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a nine-wicket victory over the Netherlands at Bristol.Michael Dighton (51) and Wesley Barresi (39) helped the visitors to 191 all out after winning the toss in excellent batting conditions. David Payne returned 3 for 33. The total never seemed likely to be enough, and the Gladiators cruised to victory despite losing Will Porterfield to the first ball of their innings, with Gidman’s 104 not out and James Franklin’s unbeaten 77 guiding them to their target with 3.3 overs to spare. The result put Gloucestershire back into second place in Group B with 16 points from their 11 games and, depending on other results, victory at Northamptonshire in their final fixture could see them finish as the best second-placed side.Gidman had just one moment of anxiety in a fluent hundred, made off 112 balls with 11 fours. Peter Borren thought he had caught him at short midwicket early in his innings, but the umpires decided the ball has been taken on the half-volley.Franklin was equally assured, picking the ones and twos, in a perfectly-paced partnership. By the end the New Zealander had faced 103 deliveries and hit only four fours. The Netherlands finish their group campaign with just a solitary victory. But they looked to have laid the foundation for a bigger score when reaching 132 for 2 in the 32nd over. Eric Szwarczynski and Wilfred Diepeveen gave them a solid start with a stand of 41 in 12 overs before Szwarczynski was bowled cutting at James Franklin for 18.It was 47 for 2 when left-arm spinner Ed Young took his first wicket for Gloucestershire, turning one past Diepeveen’s forward defensive shot. But Dighton and Barresi then added 85 in 17 overs with the best batting of the innings, Dighton reaching his half-century off 54 balls, with two fours and two sixes. The game changed when Dighton was run out by Gidman’s throw to the bowler’s end from midwicket as he attempted a quick single. It was the first of eight wickets to fall in as many overs as Gidman (2 for 23) and Steve Kirby (2 for 32) joined Payne in pegging back the visitors as they attempted to accelerate in the closing overs.

Renê, a mesma coisa.

Warrington contract news at Everton

Adam Jones has now dropped some fresh Everton news involving a proposed new contract for Lewis Warrington.

The Lowdown: Contract expiring

Warrington’s current deal at Goodison Park expires in the summer, but the Birkenhead-born midfielder is reportedly in talks over a new one.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He is currently on loan at Tranmere Rovers in League Two, where he has played 12 games, scoring one goal and providing one assist (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Talks ongoing

Replying to a fan in a Q&A session for The Liverpool Echo, Jones has now shared that talks are ‘ongoing’ between Warrington and his representatives over a potential new deal, and added that giving him one would make ‘perfect’ sense given his progression this season:

“We believe that talks are ongoing with Lewis and his representatives over a potential new deal – which would make perfect sense after seeing the progression he’s made this season! Frank Lampard could easily be a big fan in the future, we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Verdict: Deserved

Warrington certainly deserves a new contract given his performances for Tranmere this campaign.

The central midfield player has ranked in the top 10 among his new teammates in terms of aerial duels won, tackles, interceptions, clearances, shots, key passes, dribbles, long balls and through balls per game (WhoScored), despite being just 19 years of age.

He has helped the club reach ninth place in the table, where they are just one point off of the play-off places with five games left to play.

Nonetheless, should the worst happen and the Merseyside club end up relegated from the Premier League, they could then use Warrington in the first team to help further his development.

A diminuição impacta o orçamento.

Hales blasts Nottinghamshire win

Alex Hales returned to haunt Durham by smashing an unbeaten 96 in Nottinghamshire’s five-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 triumph at Chester-le-Street

25-Jul-2010
Scorecard
Alex Hales returned to haunt Durham by smashing an unbeaten 96 in Nottinghamshire’s five-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 triumph at Chester-le-Street.On his last visit to the ground, 21-year-old Hales held a controversial boundary catch which turned a Twenty20 match in his side’s favour. He insisted the catch was clean and Dale Benkenstein, who was on 40, took his word for it when a six had been signalled. This time Hales was dropped on two by Gareth Breese at slip off Chris Rushworth and went on to see Nottinghamshire to victory with 4.1 overs to spare. It looked like being even more comfortable when Hales and Samit Patel were putting on 86 in 13 overs. But, with only 25 needed off 10 overs, Patel was stumped for 46 and then David Hussey fell for a duck, brilliantly caught above his head by Phil Mustard off a steeply-rising ball from Mitch Claydon. The same combination accounted for Steve Mullaney, attempting a big pull, before Hales guided Liam Plunkett to third man for his ninth four to go with a six pulled off the same bowler. His runs came off 113 balls. Patel joined Hales at 71 for two in the 16th over and was soon timing his drives well enough to suggest Durham could not blame a sluggish pitch for their struggles. In an otherwise dismal display by Durham, Gordon Muchall made 77 in a total of 181 for 8, which was nowhere near enough to prevent them from suffering their third successive defeat in this competition.Even skipper Mustard, the fourth man out after trying to hold things together, was never able to time the ball in making 29 off 58 balls with one four – a leg glance off Paul Franks’ first ball. That was in the ninth over and Durham did not hit another boundary until the 24th, when Ian Blackwell drove past mid-off. Shortly afterwards he offered a return catch off the first ball sent down by Patel, who had come on for the last two balls of an over when Luke Fletcher limped off.Mustard lost patience in the 22nd over, when he went down the pitch and was bowled by Graeme White, and in the left-arm spinner’s next over Muchall gave his only chance when deep mid-off got his right hand to a firmly-struck drive. That signalled the start of Muchall’s acceleration and he drove two successive balls from White for four in the 26th over, adding a boundary clipped wide of long-on to his tally just before reaching 50 off 73 balls. Durham scored 15 off the 37th over, bowled by Franks, but managed only 15 runs off the remaining three overs as Muchall lofted a return catch to Mullaney.

Wolves predicted XI vs Leicester

Wolverhampton Wanderers host Midlands rivals Leicester City this afternoon as they look to climb the Premier League table with European qualification still a very realistic target.

Bruno Lage’s side sit eighth in the top-flight after both Arsenal and Tottenham claimed victories yesterday, but can return to seventh place with victory over the Foxes.

The Portuguese manager also has a fully fit squad available for selection for the first time since he arrived at Molineux, but who will start this afternoon’s Midlands meeting?

Here is how Football FanCast thinks the Golden Boys will line up with two changes made.

As expected, there are no changes in the defence after another excellent display at the back last Sunday as Wolves secured a 2-0 away at Tottenham.

The favoured defensive trio of Romain Saiss, Conor Coady and Max Kilman is back after the former’s absence due to participation in the African Cup of Nations with Morocco, something Lage will be particularly delighted about.

In the midfield comes the first change as 19-year-old Luke Cundle drops out for veteran Joao Moutinho. Cundle was impressive on his full debut last week, but the return of one of Wolves’ key players after a two-match absence means that he’ll drop out.

It could be argued that the English youngster could take the place of Leander Dendoncker, but after the Belgian scored Wolves’ second against Spurs, it would be harsh to axe the 26-year-old.

The other change comes in attack, with Lage opting to use a 3-5-2 shape once again. Daniel Podence is yet to score in the league this season, and with Lage having a full roster to choose from, the £52k per-week Portuguese may be set for a spell on the bench. In the forward’s place comes Hee-Chan Hwang, who starts his first match in two-and-a-half months.

The South Korean returned from a hamstring injury last week with a brief cameo off of the bench in north London and should be ready to start against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Hwang made a stellar start to his Wolves tenure, scoring four goals in his first six appearances for his then-loan club, with the 26-year-old’s move from RB Leipzig now permanent.

However, the forward hasn’t scored since late October, with a two-month absence being the main reason. Against a leaky Leicester defence, that duck could be broken on Sunday afternoon.

Every remaining game this season will be huge for Wolves as they look to secure European football. Having a fully fit squad available will certainly boost their bid.

Leeds eye Bielsa 2.0 in EFL boss

Leeds United could look to replace Marcelo Bielsa with his former assistant, should he leave at the end of his current contract…

What’s the word?

According to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Carlos Corberan – who is now in charge of Championship outfit Huddersfield Town – features on an initial three-man shortlist alongside former RB Leipzig head coach Jesse Marsch and ex-Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde.

The 66-year-old has only five months remaining on his contract at Elland Road but the club are hoping that he stays for his fifth season at the helm, though we will not know of his intentions until the summer.

Should they need to seek a replacement, director of football Victor Orta and co will be well prepared. All three names have similarities to the 66-year-0ld.

Bielsa 2.0

None more so than Corberan, who worked as the Argentine’s assistant for two years before catching his first senior managerial break in England at the nearby Terriers.

The 38-year-old has endured a mixed time in charge, managing only a 33.7% win rate but large parts of that were trying to steer them to safety last season. He now has them on the cusp of a spot in the play-offs heading into the second half of the season.

Indeed, the Yorkshire club sit in fifth place, but only four points separate them to mid-table.

Corberan was part of the coaching staff when Leeds were promoted from the Championship in 2020, so he knows all about Bielsa’ system and methods, so if it’s another version of the Argentinian they want, then his former assistant is surely best suited.

“Under Marcelo, it is impossible not to learn things because all the time he is thinking about the team and how to improve the team and the players,” he said (via the Daily Echo). “The possibility to spend two years working with him was something special and something I appreciate a lot.”

Bielsa once dubbed his counterpart “very important” to their success as he helped groom the U23 setup to ensure they were playing in a similar way to the first-team squad.

He also said that the Spaniard was “very talented” and was someone that he values the opinion of more than himself, so that only goes to show the sort of influence he had in the dressing room during his time at Elland Road.

The similarities are understandably quite clear.

“I love to illuminate the game. Try to control games with the ball, try to keep the ball all the time, try to dominate,” Corberan told The Athletic. “Of course, your ideas change over time, but when I analyse the behaviour of players I look for those who can illuminate the game.”

It remains to be seen whether Bielsa will stay on for a fifth successive season but his former assistant would certainly be an intriguing option to replace him.

In terms of familiarity with his tactics and this squad, there may be no-one better.
