Chris Jack drops Rangers update on John Souttar

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has now turned his attentions towards defender John Souttar as the Ibrox side look to make some further additions in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to The Glasgow Times’ Chris Jack, the Gers have now made their move to sign Souttar, whose contract at Hearts comes to an end in the summer.

His report added: “Championship clubs Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest are all interested in the Scotland defender but Rangers are keen to add Souttar to their ranks amid ongoing doubts over the long-terms futures of several defensive options.

“Van Bronckhorst will be given some of the funds raised from Nathan Patterson’s £12m to Everton as he seeks to put his own stamp on the Ibrox squad. But Souttar has been identified as a key Bosman target to bolster his defensive options and Rangers will attempt to convince him to turn down a move to England this summer.”

Would be a superb signing

With his extensive experience in the Scottish Premiership, and the fact he would be available on a free transfer given his contract expires soon, this has all the hallmarks of being a transfer masterstroke for the Gers.

Former Hearts boss Craig Levein once raved about the centre-back’s combination of defensive prowess and ability on the ball, saying: “I’ve known him since he was 12 years old and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time. He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive.”

As per Whoscored, his 77.4% pass accuracy is the second-best of any Hearts defender this season in the Scottish Premiership, while his 58.1 passes per game is the second-best among any of his teammates, regardless of position – exactly the kind of modern-day defender Van Bronckhorst will surely be looking for.

Gers fans will surely be buzzing with signing the 6 foot 1 Souttar on a free.

Meanwhile, Rangers are eyeing this Championship goalkeeper…

Romano drops exclusive on Everton medical

It has been widely speculated that Rafael Benitez has fallen out with Lucas Digne, and news coming from the Everton camp on Friday afternoon appears to suggest that the pair can’t resolve their issues.

What’s the story?

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano gave an explosive transfer insight regarding the Toffeed, taking to his Twitter profile to drop this exclusive to his millions of followers:

“EXCL: Ukraine left back Vitaliy Mykolenko is currently undergoing his medical as new Everton player, here we go! 🔵🇺🇦 #EFC”

“He’s set to join Everton from Dynamo Kiev on a permanent move, final price around €21/23m. Personal terms agreed.”

The medical may further fuel rumours of an irreparable fall-out between the Everton manager and the French left-back, who has not been in the matchday squad since the Merseyside derby.

As recorded by WhoScored, since his arrival to the Premier League. no left-back has earned a higher rating than Digne, winning 28 aerial duels and 52 tackles in his 15 appearances for the Toffees this season. He also scored against Queens Park Rangers in their Carabao Cup tie.

According to The Athletic, Digne became frustrated in conversations with the Everton manager and continuously challenged Benitez, with the pair having reportedly ‘rarely seen eye to eye’ – specifically when it came to tactics – and tensions allegedly boiled over just ahead of the Arsenal match a couple of weeks ago.

Fans will be gutted

Digne has established himself as a fan favourite, with the left-back speaking out about the reaction that many fans have had to him since he joined the club, saying: “They have even written a song for me, and I want to say thank you to them for that. We have something special in this club.”

Quite a few Everton fans have taken to Twitter to express their feelings and thoughts on the news shared by Romano. One fan tweeted; “If we sell @LucasDigne we are stupid, @everton you need to sack that fraud @rafabenitezweb #rafaout”

Another wrote: “I’ll be so, so angry if Digne is forced out of Everton in January. Angry at Rafa, and at the club by default, as with most things these days.”

It’s clear that some fans aren’t happy about potentially axing the £119k-p/w left back from the side, and with squad depth already thin and injuries piling up, Benitez cannot afford to lose any more players. Freezing out Digne could come back to bite the manager unless Everton can complete the mooted signing of Mykolenko, and even then the Ukrainian may have a hard act to follow.

Either way, his impending arrival seems to suggest that Benitez intends to move on from Digne, who might have already played his last game for the club.

Dele may’ve played his last game for Spurs

With Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side heading into Tuesday afternoon’s Premier League fixture against Southampton in an excellent run of domestic form, the 52-year-old will have been quietly confident of picking up yet another three points at St Mary’s.

However, despite Mohammed Salisu’s sending off in the first half today, Tottenham could not find the winning goal against Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side, with James Ward-Prowse’s spectacular 25th-minute strike and Harry Kane’s 41st-minute penalty being the only goals in a 1-1 draw.

As is perhaps to be expected after such a result, a number of Conte’s starting XI had an afternoon to forget against Saints, with Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal all turning in below-par displays on the south coast.

However, it will undoubtedly be Dele Alli who is most disappointed with his performance against Southampton on the Tottenham bus home, as the 25-year-old was once again ineffective in the middle of the park after being handed an opportunity to impress by Conte.

Lost 60% of his duels

Indeed, during his 62 minutes on the pitch, the £17m-rated midfielder failed to have a single shot at goal, completed just 17 of his 24 attempted passes (a success rate of 71%) and lost the ball on 12 separate occasions.

The £100k-per-week earner also failed with his one attempted dribble, was beaten by an opponent twice and lost six of his 10 duels, a failure rate of 60%.

These returns saw the player who Darren Anderton dubbed a “freak” receive a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.6, the third-worst of any Tottenham player to step onto the pitch today.

As such, with it being widely reported that Dele could be on his way out of north London in the January transfer window, if this was the England international’s last chance to impress Conte, he certainly did not take it. Today’s draw with Southampton could well be the last time the 25-year-old ever pulls on a Tottenham shirt.

Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan has been virtually ruled of tomorrow’s game against India because of a groin strain. He suffered the injury during his match-winning 104 in the opening fixture of the tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh, against the hosts.Sri Lanka entered the competition with a depleted team and have now been dealt a further blow with Dilshan’s injury. The injury came in the 34th over when Dilshan clipped Abdur Razzak to deep square-leg and turned for the second run. He pulled up in pain and it was revealed later that it was a groin injury.”We have had eight players injured in the last 60 playing days,” captain Kumar Sangakkara said. “It’s rather unfortunate, but we can do nothing about it. He [Dilshan] has pulled up an abductor muscle in the groin region. Hopefully, he can come back into the game at some point in the tournament. Hopefully, others will grab the chances.”Dilshan batted on with a runner to complete an assured century and guided Sri Lanka to a facile win. Dilshan, who scored ten centuries in 2009, has been the main batsman for Sri Lanka and they are likely to find it difficult to overcome his absence. In the recent past, Sri Lanka missed the services of Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, ThilanThushara, Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara due to injuries at various points.

A dashing yet different Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s century was a calibrated effort that shaped Sri Lanka’s fighting reply to India’s large total

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009

Tillakaratne Dilshan reined in his adventurous instincts and played a valuable innings•AFP

At his best Tillakaratne Dilshan is a dashing, adventurous batsman. When first asked to open in Tests a couple of months ago, Dilshan said he would try and remain true to his aggressive style of play. He has already cracked two vital hundreds in three Tests, along with a 92 in his maiden innings as an opener, but his 112 against India today was different – a calibrated effort that shaped Sri Lanka’s fighting reply to India’s large total. He was welcomed to the crease by a short one from Zaheer Khan that was called wide. The next two deliveries were bouncers; Dilshan tried to evade the second in an awkward manner and the ball hit his left shoulder. It was worthy of at least a wince; Dilshan merely narrowed his eyes and resumed the battle. When Zaheer returned a few overs later for his second spell, Dilshan hit his first ball inside-out past cover to record his first four of the morning. It was hit so hard that Virender Sehwag injured his finger trying to stop it and had to leave the field. In between, though, he bided his time, resisting the temptation – and Zaheer’s teasing game plan – to go for his shots. “They had a deep cover and deep square-leg straightaway and I felt the best thing to do was to go to the other end by knocking the ball down [for a single],” Dilshan said.It dovetailed with Sri Lanka’s strategy; having dismissed the dangerous Rahul Dravid and the tail in the first hour to take the morning’s honours, they needed a good platform. And for that Dilshan had to assume control given that Tharanga Paranavitana, though 27, was playing his seventh Test. All the while he also had to deal with two of his Delhi Daredevils team-mates, Gautam Gambhir and Amit Mishra, who kept taunting him to take them on. “Don’t hit and run to me, I’m quick enough” Gambhir told Dilshan. When Mishra failed to tempt Dilshan, he tried a verbal route. “I told him this is not Twenty20, this is a Test and I want to keep going,” Dilshan said.At 33, Dilshan’s life is evolving at a faster rate than when he started out a decade ago. Mostly under-used at No.6, the new leadership under Kumar Sangakkara decided he’d be better suited to open – prompted, no doubt, by his fast scoring-rate that could help the middle order. He’s probably the most unorthodox opener in Test cricket, perhaps more so than Virender Sehwag, and it’s that different approach that has troubled the bowlers and made them change their plans.Today, for instance, Harbhajan Singh, Indian’s premier spinner, was forced to deliver mostly from around the wicket to Dilshan to stop him from stepping out and hitting hard in front of the square. If Harbhajan thought he could capitalise on Dilshan’s weakness – his inability to sweep convincingly – the batsman had alternative plans; when he did not step out and push it firmly through the narrow divide between midwicket and mid-on, he would wait for the ball and then pull or flick it. And through the day he avoided his trademark scoop over the keeper’s head that made him famous during the ICC World Twenty20 earlier in the year, when he was the Player of the Series.During that tournament, in England, he hit three half-centuries and topped the run charts with 317 at 52 with a strike-rate of 144. But his Test strike rate has been peaking too: since 2005 it has climbed up to 72 (behind only Sehwag) and his average to 51 (his career average is 43).After reaching three figures Sangakkara, Dilshan’s on-field partner, advised him “Just don’t throw the wicket, keep going.” “I was trying to play the cut and he asked me to play straighter and don’t throw your wicket. Unfortunately that didn’t happen,” Dilshan said. He eventually fell to Zaheer off yet another short one, the final act of an enthralling battle that had run through the day. He would have been cursing his impetuosity but as he walked off he knew that he’d allowed his team to reach a position from where they could build a lead of 150-odd, vital on a pitch expected to take turn on the final two days.

Opportunity knocks twice for Vijay

The Tamil Nadu batsman has been on the fringes for the past one year now and is the first-choice opener in case either Sehwag or Gambhir don’t play

It couldn’t have been scripted better. Murali Vijay entered the room as S Badrinath left it, and proceeded to take the place on the sofa vacated by his Tamil Nadu team-mate and former captain, the man under whom he made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. While Badrinath is yet to play a Test for India, Vijay is getting ready to play his second after an eventful debut against Australia last year in Nagpur.”It is really good,” Vijay told Cricinfo about his past year. “I just want to get a start if I play.”Last year, he was called up at the last minute after Gautam Gambhir was forced to sit out following his one-match ban over an altercation with Shane Watson.Vijay was rushed from Nasik, where he had scored a big century in a Ranji Trophy Super League game against Maharashtra, to Nagpur. He didn’t disappoint, getting starts in both innings (33 & 41) and, importantly, sharing vital opening stands of 98 and 116 with Virender Sehwag.”I was just blank when I went in to bat. Maybe I could have done better but the team won the game”, Vijay said. He picked up a few tips from his heroes in the Indian dressing room and applied them at the domestic level. “Great players always say that it is important to keep performing at the domestic level, then it is easy to get established at the international level as you learn things like handling pressure.”It seems to have paid off. He began this season with 92 in the second innings of the Irani Cup encounter against Rest of India, then scored half-centuries in the first two Ranji Trophy matches and 148 against Punjab after he was released from the first Test squad in Ahmedabad.”I’ve learned a lot of things and I’ve managed to enhance my own game. In New Zealand, I learnt how to handle the moving ball and how to deal with the crowd pressure back home. So I hope I do well when I get my turn next time.”Vijay may be warming the bench for Gambhir, who will miss the final Test in Mumbai to attend his sister’s wedding, but he believes Sehwag and Gambhir are India’s most successful opening pair and that both have a solid temperament. His desire to score runs though, is immense.”I want to prove myself each game I play, for my state or for India,” Vijay said. “The only way I can do that is not think too much.”He said it was an “honour” to partner Sehwag at the top of the order as well. “Opening with him takes the pressure off you, because no bowler can stop him,” Vijay said. “The way he approaches his game, he is mentally very strong and handles the situation the way he wants to. He talks about cricket a lot to lighten me up.”Vijay has been on the fringes of the Test side for the past year now and is the first-choice replacement for either Sehwag or Gambhir. He has already been part of four series in those twelve months including the latest against Sri Lanka.Vijay has utilised his time as a reserve in a positive fashion. His priority was to focus on strengthening his temperament in all situations and Paddy Upton, India’s mental conditioning coach, has been a big help. “He [Upton] has talked to me about how I could handle pressure. He has stressed on keeping things simple.”He has learnt various techniques of facing the new ball from coach Gary Kirsten as well. “The best part about him is you can go up to him and ask him for an extra knock. Being an opener he points out particular stuff and you can pick a lot of stuff from him considering he was such a successful opener.”Vijay has practised hard in the last week – getting throw-downs from the Kirsten-Upton pair in Kanpur, followed by an hour-long optional nets session on Monday in Mumbai under the coach’s observation. His plans though, remained straight and simple. They were no different in Nagpur where he didn’t get much time to make personal plans. This time he is more relaxed even if he was not too sure about getting enough sleep on the eve of the game. “As it gets closer I might have some sleepless nights,” he said.
