Tottenham Hotspur left-back Ryan Sessegnon doesn’t deserve to be handed a new contract at the club, according to Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Conte plots new deal

The 21-year-old first joined Spurs in a £25m move from Fulham in 2019, but has only made a total of 29 appearances in all competitions during that time.

Just last week however, a source from N17 revealed to Football Insider that the Premier League giants have reportedly opened talks with Sessegnon over a new deal at the request of Antonio Conte.

The Italian is apparently now personally making it clear to the hierarchy that he sees the youngster as a “huge” talent.

The Latest: A waste of money?

It would seem, however, that Wenham has a very different opinion of the defender.

When asked for his view on this contract update, the insider was baffled by Conte’s call, telling Football Insider: “Sessegnon, for £30million or whatever it was, what have we seen?

“I have to be realistic in my commentary, there just isn’t anything there. I get there are a lot of reasons to like him on paper.

“He’s a young English talent who had a great season for Fulham a few years ago. What have Tottenham seen?

“I think the injuries he has had might have cost him the ability to take players on, he just doesn’t do it anymore.

“I appreciate the injury side of things but that’s football. Now we are hearing he’s getting a new deal.

“I really don’t get that. What has he done to deserve that? Am I missing something? He’s already got a deal until 2024.

“Is it because he’s homegrown and we spent a lot of money on him? I really don’t understand that decision.”

The Verdict: Limited opportunities

Despite Conte claiming that he’s a big fan of the England U21 ace, Sessegnon has only been given 705 minutes of game time in the top-flight under the Italian boss this term, with two of his outings coming from the bench.

Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho previously hailed the ex-Fulham prospect a “fantastic” player during his time in charge, but he has clearly fallen down the pecking order since his departure and simply cannot stay fit long enough to become a serious fixture in the XI.

A move away from north London could prove to be the best option for Sessegnon at this moment in time, and time will tell if Spurs heed Wenham’s warnings.

Michael Clarke, the Australia vice-captain, has said international players can find a way around hectic schedules, but it could involve giving the IPL and Champions League T20 an occasional miss to make sure they are at their best when playing for the country. Clarke was speaking on a day two of Australia’s first-choice players – Michael Hussey and Doug Bollinger – joined the squad, two days before the start of the Test series. India await their Chennai Super Kings players MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay.Clarke said the Australian team had no choice with Bollinger and Hussey, but he saw the positives in the fact that they were playing “tough” cricket, playing well, and winning it. Australia arrived in India in similar circumstances last year as well, with Brett Lee, Nathan Hauritz and Doug Bollinger joining the team on the eve of the first ODI after their Champions League commitments. Lee lasted one match in that series.Clarke was firm that the players needed to be wise while choosing where and when to play in a modern cricketing world full of opportunities. “For me, we all have a choice,” he said. “You don’t have to play IPL. You don’t have to play Champions League. For me, personally, right now it is about representing my country, and every game I can play for Australia, I will do that. That’s my priority. If, as an individual player, you are tired or your body needs some rest, you need to make that commitment outside of international cricket. You need to, maybe, play less in the IPL or play less in the Champions League.”Clarke and Mitchell Johnson are two high-profile Australia players to have not taken part in the IPL yet.Hectic schedules, he said, were part of a modern cricketer’s life. “There is obviously a lot of cricket on at the moment, but it’s a part of what you do as a professional athlete,” he said. “You train every day, and when you are not training, you are playing or travelling. I think it’s all about adapting and trying to make do as much as you can.”When we leave this tour, we have one day at home before we fly to Perth to play the Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka. So you have completely different conditions, completely different opposition, completely different format. So you have to be able to adjust, and that’s probably the toughest thing about cricket these days. You have three different formats, in so many different conditions around the world.”Like Australia, who have three days between the India tour and the home limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, India have five days between their last ODI against New Zealand and their first Test in South Africa. Clarke, however, said that players enjoyed the fact that there was so much cricket to choose from. “That’s a great challenge that you look forward to. Having success in all the different conditions in the world makes you a good international cricketer,” he said. “That’s probably the hardest thing: that you have to travel and play in so many different conditions. But there are so many positives. You get to experience so many different cultures. Different parts of the world. It certainly helps your cricket.”

David Payne returned 3 for 33. The total never seemed likely to be enough, and the Gladiators cruised to victory despite losing Will Porterfield to the first ball of their innings, with Gidman’s 104 not out and James Franklin’s unbeaten 77 guiding them to their target with 3.3 overs to spare.The result put Gloucestershire back into second place in Group B with 16 points from their 11 games and, depending on other results, victory at Northamptonshire in their final fixture could see them finish as the best second-placed side.Gidman had just one moment of anxiety in a fluent hundred, made off 112 balls with 11 fours. Peter Borren thought he had caught him at short midwicket early in his innings, but the umpires decided the ball has been taken on the half-volley.Franklin was equally assured, picking the ones and twos, in a perfectly-paced partnership. By the end the New Zealander had faced 103 deliveries and hit only four fours.The Netherlands finish their group campaign with just a solitary victory. But Dighton and Barresi then added 85 in 17 overs with the best batting of the innings, Dighton reaching his half-century off 54 balls, with two fours and two sixes.The game changed when Dighton was run out by Gidman’s throw to the bowler’s end from midwicket as he attempted a quick single. FALHAS NA ARMAÇÃO
O Flamengo ficou devendo na hora de criar oportunidades. O meio de campo, no esquema 4-1-4-1 ficou devendo. A primeira parte de criação não alcançava a criação rubro-negra e isso foi prejudicial para impedir a vitoria rubro-negra. Na úncia vez que conseguiu essa ligação, em uma jogada genial de Lucas Paquetá, o Fla atingiu a meta, com um belo gol de Everton. Na maior parte de partida, o Flamengo ficou devendo sua principal transição entre meio e ataque. Isso atrapalhou uma vitória na estreia.

SISTEMA DEFENSIVO EM NOITE PARA ESQUECER
A começar com Diego Alves. O goleiro não teve uma grande noite. Falhou no segundo gol do River, com uma bola defensável, e foi questionado no primeiro. Por falar no primeiro gol – independentemente de Mora estar impedido – Juan falhou. Não saiu do chão e viu o o atacante cabecear sozinho para o gol do Fla. No segundo, um bate-rebate e ninguém para abafar. O Flamengo foi pouco produtivo no ataque, mas chegou ao gol. Mas a defesa teve uma noite para esquecer.

LATERAIS AVENIDAS
Os flancos da defesa do Flamengo precisam se reforçar. Isso já virou palpável. Tanto Renê, Pará, Trauco e Rodinei não condizem com um elenco forte. Pará, inclusive, mostrou que chegou ao ponto que precisa mudar de ares. Sempre que joga, tem atuação irregular. Rodinei, ofensivamente, é uma boa peça, mas deixa muito a desejar na defesa. Renê, a mesma coisa. O River Plate atacou muito por seu lado, com Rdrigo Mora, e dali, saíram as melhores jogadas. É hora de Carpegiani rever a forma de jogo. Talvez um 3-5-2 seja uma boa opção. O meio pode ser criativo ocm quatro jogador, nesta noite não rendeu, mas no geral tem tido boas atuações.

No fim do jogo, Carpegiani mudou o esquema e terminou com dois volantes. Nessa, sofreu pressão do River Plate e acabou sofrendo um gol no final da partida, devido a pressão. Veja como terminou a equipe.

– A Associação Atlética Ponte Preta informa que os cortes de quadro funcional que estão sendo realizados durante o dia de hoje ocorrem em função da adequação do time à nova realidade financeira que enfrenta. Durante as últimas semanas, a Ponte já reduziu em pelo menos 30% todos os seus contratos com fornecedores e terceirizados e, agora, efetiva as mudanças internas necessárias. A diretoria alvinegra enfatiza que o desligamento destes profissionais, todos eles competentes e de grande qualidade, está sendo realizado exclusivamente por questões financeiras e não ocorreriam em outra situação. Lamentamos o fato e agradecemos a todos pelos bons serviços prestados, bem como desejamos toda sorte em seus novos desafios.

ويلتقي منتخب مصر مع نظيره بلجيكا، اليوم الجمعة، في تمام الخامسة مساءً بتوقيت القاهرة، على ملعب جابر الأحمد الدولي، بالكويت.

وقال علاء نبيل في تصريحات عبر قناة “تن”: “ما الهدف أو الفائدة من إقامة مباراة بين مصر وبلجيكا في الوقت الحالي؟، نحن لا نستعد لخوض منافسات كأس العالم أو مباريات مصيرية في التصفيات الإفريقية”.

وأضاف: “أتمنى أن يظهر المنتخب بشكل قوي في مباراة بلجيكا الودية، وتقديم عرض قوي فنيًا يليق بسمعة الكرة المصرية”.

وواصل: “في رأيي أن هناك بعض اللاعبين في الجيل الحالي من منتخب مصر انتهت صلاحيتهم الفنية مع الفراعنة في الوقت الحالي، وكان يجب استبعادهم حسابات روي فيتوريا المدير الفني”.

واستكمل: “يجب إعادة النظر في انضمام بعض لاعبي منتخب مصر خلال المرحلة المُقبلة قبل استدعائهم من جانب المدرب البرتغالي”.

وانتقل للحديث عن البرازيلي روجيرو ميكالي المدير الفني للمنتخب الأولمبي، قائلًا: “مدرب غير مقنع فنياً بالنسبة لي وكان يجب اختيار أفضل الأسماء لتدريب المنتخب من قبل اتحاد الكرة، ورغم ذلك هناك بعض مدربي أندية الدوري غير مؤهلين”.
