Rain denies Derbyshire after Durston heroics

Paul Collingwood shone with the ball on his first Durham appearance of the season before rain wrecked their Friends Provident t20 match with Derbyshire.England’s World Twenty20-winning captain conceded only 21 runs from his four overs, but the Dynamos were still facing a daunting run chase after the Falcons plundered 172 for 3 from 19 overs. Loots Bosman scored his second half century in the competition and former Somerset batsman Wes Durston hit two sixes and seven fours in an unbeaten 71 from 53 balls.Derbyshire were only five short of their biggest Twenty20 score at Derby before rain forced the umpires to take the players off the field and resulted in the North Group match being abandoned. Collingwood was the only bowler to trim the Falcons’ wings as his two England team-mates Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett came in for some rough treatment.Plunkett went for 18 off one of his four overs which cost 40 while John Sadler dispatched Harmison for two sixes in three balls over mid-wicket before the rain arrived. Durston followed his explosive century at Trent Bridge on Friday with another impressive display of clean hitting in an opening stand of 89 with Bosman. The South African cut Harmison for six and also smashed nine fours in a 32-ball 57 before he was run out going for a second by Plunkett’s throw from long on in Collingwood’s first over. Although Durston lifted Collingwood over long on for six, it was the only boundary off the England all-rounder who cleverly took the pace off the ball to restrict the batsmen. But the rest of the Dynamos attack suffered as Greg Smith and Robin Peterson also cleared the ropes to take the Falcons to what was their second highest Twenty20 total on home soil. It would have tested even Durham’s formidable line-up of big hitters but with no sign of an improvement in the weather, umpires Nigel Long and Michael Gough called the match off at 5.20pm with both sides taking a point.

Hales blasts Nottinghamshire win

Alex Hales returned to haunt Durham by smashing an unbeaten 96 in Nottinghamshire’s five-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 triumph at Chester-le-Street

25-Jul-2010
Scorecard
Alex Hales returned to haunt Durham by smashing an unbeaten 96 in Nottinghamshire’s five-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 triumph at Chester-le-Street.On his last visit to the ground, 21-year-old Hales held a controversial boundary catch which turned a Twenty20 match in his side’s favour. He insisted the catch was clean and Dale Benkenstein, who was on 40, took his word for it when a six had been signalled. This time Hales was dropped on two by Gareth Breese at slip off Chris Rushworth and went on to see Nottinghamshire to victory with 4.1 overs to spare. It looked like being even more comfortable when Hales and Samit Patel were putting on 86 in 13 overs. But, with only 25 needed off 10 overs, Patel was stumped for 46 and then David Hussey fell for a duck, brilliantly caught above his head by Phil Mustard off a steeply-rising ball from Mitch Claydon. The same combination accounted for Steve Mullaney, attempting a big pull, before Hales guided Liam Plunkett to third man for his ninth four to go with a six pulled off the same bowler. His runs came off 113 balls. Patel joined Hales at 71 for two in the 16th over and was soon timing his drives well enough to suggest Durham could not blame a sluggish pitch for their struggles. In an otherwise dismal display by Durham, Gordon Muchall made 77 in a total of 181 for 8, which was nowhere near enough to prevent them from suffering their third successive defeat in this competition.Even skipper Mustard, the fourth man out after trying to hold things together, was never able to time the ball in making 29 off 58 balls with one four – a leg glance off Paul Franks’ first ball. That was in the ninth over and Durham did not hit another boundary until the 24th, when Ian Blackwell drove past mid-off. Shortly afterwards he offered a return catch off the first ball sent down by Patel, who had come on for the last two balls of an over when Luke Fletcher limped off.Mustard lost patience in the 22nd over, when he went down the pitch and was bowled by Graeme White, and in the left-arm spinner’s next over Muchall gave his only chance when deep mid-off got his right hand to a firmly-struck drive. That signalled the start of Muchall’s acceleration and he drove two successive balls from White for four in the 26th over, adding a boundary clipped wide of long-on to his tally just before reaching 50 off 73 balls. Durham scored 15 off the 37th over, bowled by Franks, but managed only 15 runs off the remaining three overs as Muchall lofted a return catch to Mullaney.

Lancashire edge home after Carter fifty

Jonathan Trott’s resistance was in vain as Lancashire wrapped up a 65-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston for their third Championship win of the season

20-May-2010
Scorecard
Jonathan Trott’s resistance was in vain as Lancashire wrapped up a 65-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston for their third Championship win of the season.Warwickshire were challenged to make 441, the highest fourth-innings total in their history, to deny Lancashire and they briefly threatened to reach that target. Trott and Neil Carter put on 102 in 26 overs in a defiant seventh-wicket stand which denied Lancashire their first breakthrough of the day until half an hour before lunch. But once Carter went, bowled by Sajid Mahmood, the chase faltered. Trott was last out, caught on the mid-wicket boundary for 150, in the second over after lunch as Warwickshire were dismissed for 375.Carter was the main aggressor in the partnership with Trott, making a belligerent 92-ball 73 which tested the patience of Lancashire’s England paceman James Anderson. Carter twice top-edged pulls off Anderson for four over wicketkeeper Luke Sutton, which forced Lancashire captain Glen Chapple to post a long stop to stifle the left-hander.Carter’s third half-century in six championship innings swept Warwickshire along at almost a run-a-minute rate for the first hour and it looked like his luck might be in when he was dropped at long leg by Ashwell Prince on 62.Carter pulled Mahmood but Prince fumbled the chance and the ball bobbled over the rope for four. Trott, who had completed his first championship century of the season yesterday, contributed only 24 to the stand with Carter but he was content to play a sensible supporting role, defending solidly and nudging the singles to allow his partner to attack. The stand was eventually broken when Carter was beaten by a well-concealed slower-ball yorker from Mahmood when Warwickshire had got their target down below 100. Once Lancashire had made the breakthrough it was a matter of trying to keep Trott off strike and working away at the other end.Imran Tahir’s jittery stay was brief as he was caught behind fencing at Anderson, which gave the England man his first wicket of a match he joined at the halfway stage direct from the World Twenty20 in the West Indies.Lancastrian Andy Miller blocked out against Mahmood but gave Anderson his second wicket when he nibbled to Sutton after Trott took a leg bye. That left Trott with only last man Boyd Rankin to keep him company and he fired a few defiant shots, pulling Mahmood for four in the last over before lunch.Warwickshire were nine down at the interval and Trott reached 150 courtesy of a dropped catch by Paul Horton at long-on off Mahmood, before he pulled the same bowler to Steven Croft who held a running catch at deep mid-wicket.

Kervezee puts Worcestershire in command

Alexei Kervezee fell one short of a maiden first-class century but still helpedput Worcestershire in a commanding position against Leicestershire on day threeof the County Championship clash at Grace Road. The 20-year-old Holland international hit a superb 99 off 127 balls asWorcestershire declared on 277 for 9 to set Leicestershire a victory targetof 405.By the close, Leicestershire had reached 107 for one with Will Jefferson stillthere on 60 to give the Foxes hope of achieving what would be a record-breakingrun-chase for the club. But the day was illuminated by Kervezee’s innings. It contained 13sweetly-struck boundaries and showed why he is so highly regarded at New Road.Having played for Holland as a teenager, Kervezee has a limited-overs centuryto his name when he scored an unbeaten 121 against Denmark in a World Cupqualifier in South Africa last year. But he has now twice heartbreakingly just missed out on his first first-class hundred, having made 98 for Holland against Canada three years ago.He looked set to reach the landmark at Grace Road when he struck a magnificentcover drive to the boundary to move on to 99. But then, in the same over from Nathan Buck, Kervezee was trapped lbw as he tried to work the ball away on the leg side and pick up a single. He could not hide his disappointment as he walked back to the pavilion although, by then, he had done more than enough to put Worcestershire into a strong position. The visitors did not have the best of starts to the day, with Daryl Mitchelllbw to Buck without addition to the overnight 62 for 2. But, after that, the first hour produced 62 runs helped by 11 boundaries – seven of them to Kervezee.A lengthy stoppage for bad light and drizzle before lunch checkedWorcestershire’s momentum and then Leicestershire’s overseas player, AustralianAndrew McDonald, helped himself to his first five-wicket haul for the club. The wickets came in two excellent spells during the afternoon. First, he trapped Moeen Ali lbw with a delivery that kept low, and he then claimed another four wickets in a four-over burst before the declaration arrived. Former Leicestershire batsman Ben Smith survived the McDonald onslaught, reaching a half-century off 100 balls including three fours, to finish with an unbeaten 51 out of his side’s total. McDonald finished with figures of 5 for 40 and Buck claimed three for 72.Leicestershire had 35 overs to negotiate before the close and made a solidstart until Matthew Boyce fenced at a ball from Alan Richardson and was caughtbehind with the score at 23.Jefferson, however, looked in good touch, reaching his fifty off 86 balls, with44 of his runs in boundaries, and was given solid support by Paul Nixon, whoended the day on 36.

Rangers contract news on Arfield

Glasgow Rangers have now been gifted a big boost in their hope of tying Scott Arfield down to a new deal at the club.

The Lowdown: van Bronckhorst wants him

Speaking to the media before their 3-3 draw away at Ross County (via The Glasgow Times), manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst admitted that he wants to keep Arfield beyond his current contract with the Teddy Bears, which will run out in the summer.

As the Dutchman says, the central midfield player has been ‘really important‘ to the side, as he has played 27 matches in total across all competitions for them this term, scoring four goals (Transfermarkt).

At 33 years of age with 19 international caps to his name, he is one of the most experienced players in the dressing room.

The Latest: Arfield speaks out

Speaking to the media in a pre-game press conference ahead of their match at home to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, Arfield has now revealed that his agent is talking with the club about a potential new deal:

“My agent is talking to the club, this is a club I want to be a part of.

“I love being part of this football club.”

The Verdict: Big boost

Called a ‘very clever’ player by former boss Steven Gerrard, Arfield is someone who can still thrive under another coach in van Bronckhorst, and there is no doubt that he is still a key part of the team.

Yes, there will be a time when the Light Blues will have to start thinking about phasing him out given his age, but the Canadian should be given at least until the end of next season in order to help stabilise the ship under the new boss.

Nonetheless, he is someone that the fans want to keep at Ibrox too, and so a new deal will work out for all parties involved.

Everton open talks with Fabio Cannavaro

Everton are on the hunt for their new manager to lead the club out of a tumultuous season so far that has left the club teetering on the edge of the relegation zone just four points clear of the drop in 16th right now, and Farhad Moshiri is wasting no more time after the most recent defeat to Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the word?

According to TuttoSport via Sport Witness, Everton manager candidate, Fabio Cannavaro has made an ‘excellent impression’ on Moshiri and Bill Kenwirght during ‘preliminary talks’ for the potential of taking on the role as the next manager at Goodison Park.

The report states that discussions opened on Wednesday between the Italian legend and the Everton board, with Cannavaro believing it could be the ‘turning point’ in his career.

Sky Sports have reported a number of names in the running for the Premier League job, including Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Graham Potter, who ruled himself out early on, and Roberto Martinez who had the move blocked by the Belgian FA.

Better suited than Benitez

Although the 48-year-old’s CV does not match up to that of former Toffees manager Rafa Benitez, he does come with a better career win rate that is currently 55% compared to the Spaniard’s 49%.

Despite his lack of managerial know-how at an elite level, the Italian, who was hailed an “icon” by Leonardo Bonucci, still brings from his long and successful career some invaluable experiences, winning the Ballon d’Or, World Cup and two La Liga titles to name a few of his impressive accolades.

This winning mentality that Cannavaro has earned and developed throughout his playing career could have a great and unique influence on the Everton team who are clearly lacking confidence and inspiration which has translated into their performances, causing a downward spiral that has led to their ongoing demise in the Premier League with just five wins from 20 games.

Successful players who turn their hand to management, have gone onto great things when given the opportunity to manage at an elite level, with Zinedine Zidane the perfect example of a hugely successful winner as a player turning into a managerial success, and Cannavaro could find the right path with Everton if he was given the opportunity to manage the side.

Moshiri will need to make a decision on the direction for the Merseyside club soon, as Toffees fans fury boiled over this weekend with supporters becoming aggressive in the stadium by throwing bottles at players, protests in the stands and even fans approaching Bill Kenwright after the defeat on Saturday.

The PCB has confirmed the appointment of former fast bowler Waqar Younis as Pakistan coach, replacing Intikhab Alam. Waqar has been offered a contract till December 2011 and comes to the helm after a disastrous tour of Australia, which Pakistan finished without a win. Former Pakistan batsman Ijaz Ahmed, who was in charge of the national Under-19 team which reached the final of the World Cup in New Zealand, will be the batting and fielding coach.PCB chairman, Ijaz Butt, said the board had also considered Waqar’s new-ball bowling partner in the 90s, Wasim Akram, for the post. “We had a choice between Younis and Wasim Akram,” Butt said, “but since Akram was busy with his commitments in the media we decided to appoint Younis as the new coach.”Waqar has already had a couple of stints as bowling coach, first between March 2006 and January 2007 when Bob Woolmer was head coach, and then on the recent visit to Australia. He is being offered a monthly salary of 650,000 rupees (US$7600). His first challenge will be to prepare the team for the defense of their World Twenty20 crown in the Caribbean in a couple of months.Waqar’s appointment comes after the PCB failed to convince former Australian captain Greg Chappell to take up the coaching job. “Foreign coaches were demanding big money and were willing to work with our team only when its touring some other country,” Butt said. “This was not acceptable to us.”
