Everton are on the hunt for their new manager to lead the club out of a tumultuous season so far that has left the club teetering on the edge of the relegation zone just four points clear of the drop in 16th right now, and Farhad Moshiri is wasting no more time after the most recent defeat to Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the word?

According to TuttoSport via Sport Witness, Everton manager candidate, Fabio Cannavaro has made an ‘excellent impression’ on Moshiri and Bill Kenwirght during ‘preliminary talks’ for the potential of taking on the role as the next manager at Goodison Park.

The report states that discussions opened on Wednesday between the Italian legend and the Everton board, with Cannavaro believing it could be the ‘turning point’ in his career.

Sky Sports have reported a number of names in the running for the Premier League job, including Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Graham Potter, who ruled himself out early on, and Roberto Martinez who had the move blocked by the Belgian FA.

Better suited than Benitez

Although the 48-year-old’s CV does not match up to that of former Toffees manager Rafa Benitez, he does come with a better career win rate that is currently 55% compared to the Spaniard’s 49%.

Despite his lack of managerial know-how at an elite level, the Italian, who was hailed an “icon” by Leonardo Bonucci, still brings from his long and successful career some invaluable experiences, winning the Ballon d’Or, World Cup and two La Liga titles to name a few of his impressive accolades.

This winning mentality that Cannavaro has earned and developed throughout his playing career could have a great and unique influence on the Everton team who are clearly lacking confidence and inspiration which has translated into their performances, causing a downward spiral that has led to their ongoing demise in the Premier League with just five wins from 20 games.

Successful players who turn their hand to management, have gone onto great things when given the opportunity to manage at an elite level, with Zinedine Zidane the perfect example of a hugely successful winner as a player turning into a managerial success, and Cannavaro could find the right path with Everton if he was given the opportunity to manage the side.

Moshiri will need to make a decision on the direction for the Merseyside club soon, as Toffees fans fury boiled over this weekend with supporters becoming aggressive in the stadium by throwing bottles at players, protests in the stands and even fans approaching Bill Kenwright after the defeat on Saturday.

According to journalist Adam White (via Give Me Sport), Lille attacker Jonathan David would be a ‘statement signing’ for West Ham if they are able to secure his signature in the January window.

The Lowdown: Hammers interested in David

Reliable source ExWHUemployee previously claimed that West Ham are interested in the signing of prolific Ligue 1 striker David, who has netted 12 league goals in 19 appearances this season.

Considering the European giants who are reportedly interested in David, White thinks it would be extremely impressive if the Hammers were to pull off the signing.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, White claimed: “It would be a huge statement signing given the clubs that are interested.”

This arises after Jeunes Footeux have revealed that a move for David would cost £45million; the same fee that the Irons paid for current Ajax star Sebastien Haller.

The Verdict: Incredible but unlikely?

Whilst he was playing in the Belgian league, former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck described David as ‘a phenomenon’ and further claimed that he was ‘the best player in the country’.

The striker is Lille’s top scorer by some margin this season, having netted eight more than second place Burak Yilmaz. He is as equally prolific on the international stage, having totalled 18 goals in 24 appearances for the Canadian national team.

David’s qualities are evidently clear. However, this has never been a debate for the Hammers. What David Moyes will be worried about is whether they can compete with the European giants, as they set to battle it out for the player’s signature.

Even if they can convince the promising young forward to join, then comes the price tag – can we really expect GSB to shell out another fee similar to the one they spent on Haller after how that went?

The IPL organisers continue to ignore the pleas of the News Media Coalition (NMC), the international body that monitors the specific threat to editorial operations from excessive controls imposed by sporting events, as international news agencies, which provided coverage of the second season in South Africa, are being forced to abandon plans to attend the third edition. Due to the new IPL rules, newspapers and broadcasters who rely upon news agencies for reports and photographs will not be able to provide similar coverage for the tournament beginning March 12.The NMC has been contacted by a number of media organisations about the IPL terms. The NMC and news organisations in India have told the IPL that coverage will be affected unless there is a change to the media rules which govern journalist and photographer attendances.”Without changes international news agencies are bound to consider not attending this year’s event to provide editorial coverage,” the NMC said in a release today. “Newspapers in India and abroad are also known to be reconsidering their plans for coverage based on these arrangements. As many publishers the world over rely upon news agencies for news material the stance taken by the IPL can only serve to limit news and free promotional value of their event and brand.”The corporation had earlier called upon the IPL to find a solution to the widespread press concerns. The NMC had previously reached a compromise agreement with the IPL for last year’s tournament and assisted in fostering productive relations between the tournament’s promoters and the news media.”If media organisations feel forced not to attend this year it would set back the positive goodwill and relationship which characterised the event last year,” the NMC statement said. “We urge the IPL executive to engage in meaningful discussions to identify a solution in this area of press freedom concern.”News organisations want the IPL to remove aspects of the terms and conditions of journalist attendance which seek to define news platforms that are acceptable to the IPL in terms of their ownership and/or the scope of their business operations. حرم المدرب البرتغالي نونو سانتو في مواجهة النصر، من خدمات الثنائي الهجومي لفريق اتحاد جدة، اللاعب البرازيلي رومارينيو داسيلفا والأنجولي هيلدر كوستا وذلك بداعي الإصابة.

وشهدت تدريبات الاتحاد مساء اليوم الثلاثاء العمل على الجانب البدني عقب التعادل سلبيًا في ملعب مرسول بارك أمام النصر في إطار الجولة الخامسة لدوري روشن.

وكان الخبر السار تواجد رومارينيو في التدريبات الجماعية عقب تعافيه من الإصابة بتمزق في رباط عضلة الفخذ الأمامية، أثناء مشاركته في مباراة الفريق أمام الخليج، في سبتمبر الماضي وهي الإصابة التي أبعدته عن مباراة النصر.

من جانبه بدأ كوستا العمل البدني بشكل انفرادي، من خلال الركض حول المضمار، وبات من المنتظر جاهزيته للدخول في التدريبات الجماعية في الفترة المقبلة مما يعني جاهزية كوستا ورومارينيو للقاء الاتحاد القادم.

ويستعد الاتحاد لمواجهة الفتح مساء الجمعة المقبلة، على ملعب مدينة الملك عبد الله الرياضية بجدة “الجوهرة المشعة”، ضمن منافسات الجولة السادسة من مسابقة دوري روشن السعودي.

يذكر أن الاتحاد يتواجد في المركز الثالث في جدول ترتيب دوري روشن برصيد 11 نقطة من خلال 3 انتصارات والتعادل في مباراتي الاتفاق والنصر.

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has now turned his attentions towards defender John Souttar as the Ibrox side look to make some further additions in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to The Glasgow Times’ Chris Jack, the Gers have now made their move to sign Souttar, whose contract at Hearts comes to an end in the summer.

His report added: “Championship clubs Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest are all interested in the Scotland defender but Rangers are keen to add Souttar to their ranks amid ongoing doubts over the long-terms futures of several defensive options.

“Van Bronckhorst will be given some of the funds raised from Nathan Patterson’s £12m to Everton as he seeks to put his own stamp on the Ibrox squad. But Souttar has been identified as a key Bosman target to bolster his defensive options and Rangers will attempt to convince him to turn down a move to England this summer.”

Would be a superb signing

With his extensive experience in the Scottish Premiership, and the fact he would be available on a free transfer given his contract expires soon, this has all the hallmarks of being a transfer masterstroke for the Gers.

Former Hearts boss Craig Levein once raved about the centre-back’s combination of defensive prowess and ability on the ball, saying: “I’ve known him since he was 12 years old and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time. He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive.”

As per Whoscored, his 77.4% pass accuracy is the second-best of any Hearts defender this season in the Scottish Premiership, while his 58.1 passes per game is the second-best among any of his teammates, regardless of position – exactly the kind of modern-day defender Van Bronckhorst will surely be looking for.

Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan has been virtually ruled of tomorrow’s game against India because of a groin strain. He suffered the injury during his match-winning 104 in the opening fixture of the tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh, against the hosts.Sri Lanka entered the competition with a depleted team and have now been dealt a further blow with Dilshan’s injury. The injury came in the 34th over when Dilshan clipped Abdur Razzak to deep square-leg and turned for the second run. He pulled up in pain and it was revealed later that it was a groin injury.”We have had eight players injured in the last 60 playing days,” captain Kumar Sangakkara said. “It’s rather unfortunate, but we can do nothing about it. He [Dilshan] has pulled up an abductor muscle in the groin region. Hopefully, he can come back into the game at some point in the tournament. Hopefully, others will grab the chances.”Dilshan batted on with a runner to complete an assured century and guided Sri Lanka to a facile win. Dilshan, who scored ten centuries in 2009, has been the main batsman for Sri Lanka and they are likely to find it difficult to overcome his absence.In the recent past, Sri Lanka missed the services of Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, ThilanThushara, Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara due to injuries at various points.
