West Ham: Moyes must unleash Dawson vs Genk

West Ham United return to Europa League action as they welcome Genk to the London Stadium this evening.

David Moyes and his side will be looking to keep up their 100% win record in Group H and they will be buoyed with confidence from the weekend’s narrow but convincing 1-0 victory over Everton.

The Scotsman will surely be tempted to rotate his starting XI, as he often has done in this competition, especially with the small matter of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

One player who is surely in line to start is Craig Dawson, who has a pretty remarkable record when playing for the club, notching a 63.5% win rate. He played from the off in the 2-0 win over Rapid Wien but not against Dinamo Zagreb.

His involvement could hand a rest to either Angelo Ogbonna or Kurt Zouma ahead of this weekend’s London derby, and as evident above, he can definitely be relied upon.

In fact, the Hammers’ only two losses this season have come when he has not played any involvement whatsoever.

The 6 foot 2 colossus has been described as a “leader” by former Hammer defender Anton Ferdinand, so the presence of the Italian beast will not be completely missed and whoever partners him, likely to be Issa Diop, will be in safe hands too.

Furthermore, Genk’s major weakness is from set-pieces, where they have already leaked a whopping ten goals, so the presence of Dawson could terrify them in east London tonight.

“In Belgium, they dominated the games that they lost. But they missed too many chances and conceded too many easy goals. Already ten from set pieces, especially against West Ham that can become a big problem,” explained journalist Marnik Geukens to football.london.

Dawson is a massive threat from set-pieces, so it would be wise for Moyes to start him tonight.

“I enjoyed working with Dawson and he’s the best attacker of set pieces that I’ve ever come across in my managerial career,” once claimed former Irons boss Alan Pardew.

The £42.5k-per-week star must be unleashed at the London Stadium this evening.

West Ham fans fume at Said Benrahma display

A number of West Ham supporters have laid into Said Benrahma’s first half performance in the Premier League clash against Everton.

The Hammers are back in league action this afternoon after the international break, making the trip to Goodison Park to take on the Toffees.

A win could see West Ham jump as high as fifth in the table, but Everton went into the game with a 100% home record in the Premier League so far this season.

It is an interesting match-up between two good teams, while the former Merseyside rivalry between David Moyes and Rafa Benitez arguably gives the game some extra spice.

One player who struggled in the first half was Benrahma, who failed with his final ball on several occasions, sending two crosses into the stands in quick succession during a frustrating afternoon for the Algerian.

West Ham fans react to Benrahma’s display

The winger was evidently guilty of being wasteful with his end product, his goals and assists drying up after an excellent start to the campaign, and these West Ham fans on Twitter reacted negatively to his performance.

Comeback chance for Shoaib and Symonds

Preview to the first ODI between Pakistan and Australia in Dubai

Big PictureFor a team which has had little international cricket in the recent past the next couple of weeks is a huge opportunity: Pakistan have only played two Tests and six ODIs in the last nine months, but will play five ODIs and a Twenty20 game over the next 16 days against the second-best team in one-day cricket. While that’s a significant occasion for Pakistan, it’ll also test their preparedness – if they come out rusty, their lack of match practice could be ruthlessly exposed. It’ll help, though, that their team is being led Younis Khan, a captain who exudes positive energy and is probably the best man to keep team spirits high in such depressing times. For Australia, the problem is the opposite: they’ve played 12 Tests and 18 ODIs in the last nine months, and they have so much more cricket coming up in the next few months that some of their big names have been forced to take a break. Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson are being rested, while Brett Lee isn’t yet fit enough. In Ponting’s absence, Michael Clarke will lead a team which has been struggling to assert itself in ODIs lately, losing a couple of series to South Africa and drawing one to New Zealand. The series is also an opportunity for a couple of players to return to the national fold – Andrew Symonds is back in ODIs after a ten-month absence, while Stuart Clark has an opportunity to stake his claim again after recovering from an elbow injury. There’ll be plenty of focus on the venue too: the Dubai Sports City Stadium will become the 172nd venue to host an ODI, and by all accounts the 25,000-seater has impressed both teams. With so much uncertainty over the security situation in Pakistan, a good show here will encourage more games – possibly even Tests – at this ground, which will be good news for Pakistan and for world cricket.Form guide (last five ODIs, most recent first)Pakistan LLWWW
Australia WLLLW
Watch out forAndrew Symonds: Back in the Australian ODI team for the first time since July 2008, Symonds will be keen to prove he has worked on his attitude and his form, and is ready to perform at the top level again. Strong displays here will strengthen his case for a place in Australia’s squad for the World Twenty20, and perhaps even the Ashes.Shoaib Akhtar: There are plenty of question marks about Shoaib’s form and fitness, but his ability to turn it on when fully focused isn’t in doubt. The dry conditions in Dubai should help his reverse-swing too.Team newsPakistan are most likely to play three specialist fast bowlers – Shoaib, Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir – with Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik offering spin support. Nasir Jamshed should be back at the top of the order after missing the last couple of series.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Saeed Ajmal.Despite putting together century stands in their last two games in South Africa, Australia are likely to disturb the opening combination of Brad Haddin and Clarke, and instead put Shaun Marsh and Shane Watson at the top of the order. Haddin is likely to drop to No.3, with Clarke in next. With Johnson and Siddle resting and Lee injured, the bowling attack will have some changes too, and Clark might get an early chance to prove his fitness.Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Brad Haddin (wk), 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 David Hussey, 7 Callum Ferguson, 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Stuart Clark, 10 Nathan Bracken, 11 Ben Laughlin. Pitch and conditionsPakistan aren’t playing at home, but conditions at the Dubai Sports City Stadium will probably resemble those in Lahore or Karachi. The heat will be quite acute, and the dry conditions should offer plenty of encouragement for the spinners.Stats and Trivia Australia have been in wretched ODI form this year, winning only five matches out of 15, and losing nine. Nathan Bracken has been one of the below-par performers during this period, with 16 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 39.93 and an economy rate of 5.34. In 11 ODIs against Australia, Younis has only scored 158 runs at an average of 15.80, with one half-century. These two teams last played an ODI more than three years ago, during the VB Series in February 2005. Australia won the best-of-three finals 2-0. Quotes”Personally, I’m delighted to be back in Aussie colours – I’ve had a few decent tussles with Pakistan over the years, my debut in Pakistan for starters, and the 2003 World Cup, and I’ve no doubt this will be a tough series against them. The challenge is there for all of us to roll up our sleeves and get into it.”
“We’ve been given a fantastic opportunity to perform and put your hand up while guys are out resting or injured. It gives somebody else an opportunity to push for the 2011 World Cup.”
“There is no alternative to playing at home but unfortunately we have to play in Emirates but the conditions here are similar to Pakistan and we feel it is like a home away from home. I hope Pakistani people who live here will come to encourage us.”
“I am pleased at Shoaib’s discipline both on and off the field. He has shown promise and he is bowling with commitment, and I have lots of hope that he would deliver for us, which, I tell you, is very important.”

Lundstrum let Rangers down vs Aberdeen

Rangers retained their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night as they held Aberdeen to a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.

The Gers found themselves 2-0 down early on as they struggled to get to grips with the Dons’ high press and left themselves with a mountain to climb.

Alfredo Morelos pulled one back before half-time as he nodded home from close range after a free-kick from James Tavernier. The Teddy Bears full-back then turned from provider to scorer as he converted a penalty late on to complete the comeback and secure a point.

A number of players struggled on a difficult night for Rangers, with one of them being central midfielder John Lundstram as he put in a disappointing display in the middle of the park.

The summer signing from Sheffield United was partly to blame for the opening goal for Aberdeen. He was dispossessed under pressure inside the penalty area, with Christian Ramirez scoring from the end of the ensuing move.

On that note, defensively he was poor throughout.

Per SofaScore, he lost 80% (4/5) of his individual duels on the pitch and failed to complete a single successful defensive action.

The lightweight also made zero tackles, interceptions, blocks or clearances as he was unable to impose himself on the game from a physical standpoint.

Offensively, he did not far much better.

Per SofaScore, he missed one ‘big chance’ and failed to provide a single key pass despite having 66 touches and completing 95% of his attempted passes.

This suggests that he was too safe with his pass selections and did not attempt to play the killer balls that were required to open up the Aberdeen defence, whilst he also missed his opportunity to score when presented with the ball in front of goal.

It’s no wonder he was hooked after just 61 minutes.

Football FanCast published an article ahead of the game urging Gerrard to drop Lundstram in favour of Glen Kamara. The Finland international did start, but he was given his place ahead of Steven Davis as the manager put his faith in the ex-Blades beast.

Therefore, Lundstram let his head coach down badly as he was unable to repay the faith shown in him after he was also caught out for a goal against St Mirren on Sunday.

He put in another worrying display against Aberdeen and his place is now surely in doubt as Gerrard ponders his next starting XI.

Harmison's five sinks Lancashire

A round-up from the third day of the latest County Championship matches, as Steve Harmison inspired Durham to a win, while Piyush Chawla cracked his maiden first-class hundred

Cricinfo staff13-Jun-2009Division OneSteve Harmison grabbed his first five-wicket haul of the season to lead Durham to a 138-run win over Lancashire on the third day at Chester-le-Street. Lancashire, rolled for 116 in their first innings, fared little better in their second on a pitch offering variable bounce. Set 274 to win, they were castled for 135, with Harmison claiming the first four wickets to fall. Bowling with pace and gaining significant bounce, he removed Paul Horton with a lifter before rapping Ashwell Prince in front. Next to go was Francois du Plessis, caught behind, but Harmison saved his most ferocious for Mal Loye, who received an unplayable brute which took the handle of his bat before flying to Gordon Muchall at third slip. Graham Onions chipped in with three wickets, including that of Andrew Flintoff, brilliantly caught by Mitch Claydon, as Durham wrapped things up after 52 overs. The young India legspinner, Piyush Chawla, smashed a brilliant maiden hundred to give his adopted county Sussex a record total at which to declare, leaving them in dominant position on the third day against Worcestershire at New Road. Chawla was unbeaten on 102 – his second fifty took a mere 28 balls – as Sussex declared on 620 for 9, the seventh-highest total in the club’s history, and the largest total Worcestershire have suffered in 13 years. Chawla, who signed this week as a temporary replacement for Pakistan’s Yasir Arafat, batted at No.9 and cracked seven fours and six sixes in 95 minutes of exhilarating hitting. To cap a fine day, he then won lbw decisions against Vikram Solanki and Ben Smith, as Worcestershire went to stumps on 120 for 3, seeking a further 212 to win.For a report from the third day at The Rose Bowl between Nottinghamshire and Hampshire, click here.Click here for John Ward’s report on the third day at Headingley, where Yorkshire took on Somerset.Division TwoJamie Dalrymple enjoyed another good day for Glamorgan, reaching his highest score and picking up two quick wickets against Derbyshire at Derby. Glamorgan’s last four added an impressive 151, leading Derbyshire by 10 runs, and the home side were soon in trouble at 59 for 3. Steve Stubbings (49) and Wavell Hinds (42*) dug in but Glamorgan picked up three more wickets to leave Derbyshire on 142 for 6 at stumps, leading by 132.Northamptonshire are on the verge of defeat to Surrey who took seven wickets on the third day at Northampton, leaving the home side still trailing by 132 runs. Usman Afzaal cracked his first double hundred of his career, remaining unbeaten on 204 in Surrey’s mammoth 530 all out. Northamptonshire’s reply began dismally, losing four wickets with just 65 on the board, but Stephen Peters fought gallantly in his patient 78, his second fifty of the match. He shared in a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 76 with Andrew Hall, but Hall was removed by Murtaza Hussain, while Peters was caught by Mark Butcher off Chris Schofield. Only rain can save Northamptonshire now.
