Celtic handed boost in Dembele pursuit

It is no secret that Celtic were interested in the signing of Siriki Dembele this summer, with numerous reports suggesting that the Bhoys wanted to reunite the centre-forward with his younger brother, Karamoko, at Parkhead.

However, upon the closure of the transfer window, the 25-year-old remained on the books at Peterborough United, with talk of the striker being offered a new deal at the Weston Homes Stadium, as his current deal is due to expire at the end of the season.

Although, according to recent comments made by Peterborough chairman Darragh McAnthony (as cited by the Daily Record), the Championship side look to be allowing the forward to run his contract down, as well as suggesting that Posh could cash in on the player this January – should they receive a significant offer.

Speaking about the future of the former Grimsby Town man, McAnthony said: “Siriki is a top-end Championship talent. He’s not in the shop window. We are not actively looking to sell him in January so any clubs who think it’s ‘bargain city’ as he only has six months left on his contract can think again.

“Now, if a club offered us a premium price of say, £7m with add-ons, we would have a decision to make, but if he did go we have plans B and C in place to cope.”

Major coup

While £7m is undoubtedly an extremely hefty price for a player who Celtic could potentially land for free just six months later, it would nevertheless be difficult to argue that the signing of Dembele would not be a major coup for Ange Postecoglou and his side, as the 25-year-old is certainly a player who boasts a significant amount of potential.

Indeed, over his 42 League One appearances for Peterborough last season, the £1.08m-rated man scored 11 goals, registered ten assists and created a whopping 17 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw Dembele earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking him as the club’s joint seventh-best performer in the third tier of English football.

The centre-forward has continued this fine form into his 14 Championship appearances this season, with the £2.6k-per-week man scoring four goals, providing two assists and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.1 shots and making 0.9 key passes per fixture.

These metrics have seen the player who Darren Ferguson dubbed an “outstanding” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 6.86, ranking him as Posh’s joint third-best performer in the league.

As such, considering his obvious ability in front of goal, in addition to the fact that the likes of Rangers, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are also reported to be interested in his services, should Celtic manage to land the 25-year-old either in January or a free next summer, he would certainly represent something of a significant coup for the club.

Indeed, if the striker were to be able to continue the form he has demonstrated for Peterborough over the last two seasons after a move to Parkhead, he could well go on to return similar numbers to his namesake Moussa Dembele in the green and white of Celtic.

A similarly boisterous character in the penalty box, the Frenchman combined speed with exquisite finishing, bullying defenders. That’s precisely the type of displays we could see from the Celtic-linked forward. He’d be a great signing at Parkhead.

Onions' seven sends Durham top

A day after Steve Harmison staked his claim for an Ashes place, it was the turn of Graham Onions to prove his Test credentials

A day after Steve Harmison staked his claim for an Ashes place, it was the turn of Graham Onions to prove his Test credentials. Onions claimed seven for 38, bowling with pace and accuracy, to help Durham to a ten-wicket victory that puts them back on top of the Championship table. They have now won three games in succession and look certain to mount a sustained defence of their title. This was a highly impressive performance. Not only had Warwickshire prepared a pitch to negate the threat of Durham’s fast bowlers, but almost a day had been lost to poor weather. Indeed, Durham’s head coach, Geoff Cook, referred to the performance as “one of Durham’s best wins.”Certainly their fast bowling attack is the envy of their rivals. While many teams would delight in one fast bowler, Durham seem to have a production line of them. Though Liam Plunkett is rated as “nowhere near playing” by Cook, Mark Davies will return for the second XI next week after an ankle injury. The club are better placed than most to withstand either injuries or England call-ups.Harmison and Onions complemented each other perfectly in this match. Between them they claimed 13 for 230 in this game, with Harmison using his height to extract bounce, and Onions bowling fuller and straighter. Onions appeared slightly the quicker.Onions seems to like bowling at Edgbaston. In his last appearance here, in 2007, he claimed career-best figures of eight for 101. But it’s not the pitch that helps him. The ground remains a bowlers’ graveyard; slow and unhelpful. Instead, his success – and that of Harmison – raises questions about the technique and application of Warwickshire’s batsmen against pace. Quite simply, some of them don’t fancy it.If there was one cloud on the Durham horizon it would be the quality of their spin bowling. Though he beat the bat several times, Ian Blackwell was unable to take advantage of highly favourable conditions and Gareth Breese was rarely used. This result ended Warwickshire’s long, unbeaten run. They had not lost a championship game since the end of 2007 – a run of 20 matches – and had only lost once at home in the last three years. It was also Ashley Giles’ first experience of championship defeat as director of cricket. While one defeat in 18-months is hardly cause for panic, it should cause some concern. They have only won once at Edgbaston since April 2007 and face a tough end to the season with away games at Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Durham. A relegation struggle looms. They can take some comfort in the fact that they will rarely come up against attacks of Durham’s class. And it’s just as well, for several Warwickshire players looked more than a little uncomfortable against the pace and aggression of Harmison and Onions.Only when Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott were together did it appear that Warwickshire could avoid defeat. The pair of them added 72 before Bell, who had oozed class in compiling his second half-century of the match, played at one he could have left only to see an inside edge send his middle-stump cart wheeling. It precipitated a sharp decline. Onions claimed three for four in 12 deliveries as Trott edged a back foot push into the slips and Jim Troughton, who looks deeply uncomfortable against pace, prodded tentatively down the wrong line. Tim Ambrose edged as he pushed at a good one that bounced before Neil Carter, who had just pulled three successive boundaries off Harimson, then obligingly cut straight to the short third man placed for the shot.Chris Woakes edged a perfect ball he had to play, while Jeetan Patel, who does not so much go back and across as back and away was beaten for pace. Ant Botha and Boyd Rankin resisted until deep inside the final hour but, by the time the latter edged to slip, the target was only 21 and Durham had eight overs left. They duly won with four overs to spare.Perhaps the key moment came much earlier in the day. Warwickshire came within eight of saving the follow-on, before Rankin played-on against Onions. They were soon in trouble second time around. Tony Frost fished at a good ball on off stump, before Ian Westwood’s torturous stay – his eight runs occupied 56 balls – ended when he turned one to short leg. In the end, Warwickshire were out-classed by a highly impressive Durham.

Hauritz's injury leaves Haddin queasy

Nathan Hauritz gave Australia hope he could support their under-manned attack by fielding late in the day after dislocating his right middle finger when dropping a stinging chance from Andrew Strauss

Nathan Hauritz gave Australia hope he could support their under-manned attack by fielding late in the day after dislocating his right middle finger when dropping a stinging chance from Andrew Strauss. The offspinner Hauritz left the field immediately and x-rays showed no break, but his chances of a quick recovery depend on how the injury develops over the next day. While he felt discomfort when he delivered a handful of balls on the Lord’s outfield during the tea break, the move showed his determination to rejoin the attack that allowed England to steam to 364 for 6 on the first day. Andrew Strauss, who was unbeaten on 161, redesigned Hauritz’s fingertip on 52 when the bowler stuck his hand out at hip height to intercept the drive.”I hit the ball pretty well, and I think he was pretty surprised that I jumped down the wicket,” Strauss said. “From then on he just walked straight off, so I presumed it was a dislocation. A bit of good luck for me and bad luck for him.”The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin tried not to look at the bent finger before the physiotherapist Alex Kountouris straightened it in the dressing room. “I don’t know if I can talk about it,” Haddin said. “I don’t like seeing those things. My stomach can’t handle it. It didn’t look great.”Hauritz was the leading spinner in Cardiff with six wickets for the match and after allowing 26 runs in 8.3 overs was replaced by Marcus North. Before the series it was expected North, a part-time offspinner, would take on heavy load in this series and he kept his end tight for 16.3 overs.Haddin was impressed with Hauritz’s return to the field for the final hour and hoped he would be able to bowl in the second innings – or earlier. “We’ll see how he pulls up,” Haddin said. “With these sort of dislocated fingers, they can sometimes calm down after 24 hours once you’ve had time to throw them in some ice.”The Australians hit back with six breakthroughs after England’s openers reached 196 against some inconsistent bowling, particularly from Mitchell Johnson. Ben Hilfenhaus was tight, taking 2 for 77, but the visitors were flattered by the wicket column.”We were looking down the barrel of a very bad day at 0 for 200 and I thought we fought back well,” Haddin said. “But the bottom line is as well as we went today, there’s 360 on the board and a massive first session coming up in the morning. We’ve got to make sure we can build some of that pressure with the ball and create enough chances.”Haddin is also looking to improve his keeping after giving up 15 byes. He struggled with the movement after it passed the batsmen and gave up ten extras in two overs from Peter Siddle before lunch. There was also a missed catch from a Hilfenhaus no-ball, but he managed to hold on to a low take off Siddle to remove Kevin Pietersen for 32.”From a personal point of view I was a bit tense in that time [in the first session],” Haddin said. “My feet weren’t going how I would’ve liked them for that bit. I was probably a bit nervous with the whole occasion at Lord’s. Once I calmed down and got into the day, I started to enjoy the day a bit more.”

Liverpool linked with Bremer swoop

Despite managing to score more goals (31) than any other Premier League side with 11 games played this season, Liverpool have conceded 11 goals in the process, seven fewer than league leaders Chelsea and five fewer than Manchester City in second place.

With this in mind, it seems as though the club are interested in bolstering their defensive strength during the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Torino Granata, that Liverpool are considering making a move to sign Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer in January, with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp apparently following the defender for a significant period of time.

Torino signed Bremer during the 2018 summer transfer window from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro.

Since then, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, has made 88 appearances for the Italian club across all competitions and has managed to chip in with 11 goals and five assists, which is rather impressive for a defender.

So far this season, Bremer, who has been described as “incredible” in the past by former Torino manager Davide Nicola, has played in all but one of Torino’s Serie A games, showing how important he is to their side, donning the captain’s armband on two occasions.

As well as proving himself as an attacking threat, the Brazilian has racked up an average of 3.9 interceptions, 3.5 clearances per game and 1.9 tackles per game in Serie A so far this season, proving himself a solid defensive unit for them.

In terms of a potential January move to Liverpool, FSG could potentially replicate the same transfer masterclass that saw them bring in Virgil van Dijk back in the 2018 January transfer window, who has since gone on to make 144 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in the process, not only making him a crucial figure for Klopp’s side at the back but also a goalscoring threat up top, as Bremer has proven himself to be for Torino.

Moving forward, if Liverpool believe adding Bremer to their squad in January could improve their defence, after conceding three goals in their previous Premier League match against West Ham United, then they should definitely explore the possibility of signing him during the upcoming window.

Also, given Bremer’s age and the fact that Van Dijk has now hit the age of 30, there’s every possibility that the Brazilian could well go on to become a long-term replacement for the current Liverpool centre-back.

Everton fans love Anthony Gordon comments

Many Everton fans have been loving what Anthony Gordon has said in a recent interview.

Speaking to The Athletic earlier in the week, which has since been shared by Toffee TV on their Twitter profile, the youngster talked about his recent run of form but claimed that he is ‘nowhere near’ the level that he wants to be.

The 20-year-old said: “I see myself as a game-changer and a matchwinner for Everton.

“At the minute, I’m playing really well but I’m not winning games for us. I am still nowhere near where I want to be.”

Gordon has started in first call-up to the England under-21 team a few days ago.

He scored two goals on his debut for the Young Lions under former Toffees player Lee Carsley, and at 20 years of age, he will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham in getting a senior call-up by Gareth Southgate despite being so young.

Everton fans on Gordon comments

These Everton supporters showed their appreciation for Gordon’s comments as they were shared on Twitter, with a few claiming that they ‘love’ his attitude, while another described him as a ‘real talent’:
