Revamped Zimbabwe XI host Kenya

Zimbabwe have made seven changes to the side that drew their previous game against Afghanistan in Mutare

Cricinfo staff06-Oct-2009A much-revamped Zimbabwe XI will host Kenya in an ICC Intercontinental Cup fixture in Kwekwe on Wednesday. Zimbabwe have made seven changes to the side that drew their previous game against Afghanistan in Mutare, and the most notable absence is Tatenda Taibu, who starred with a century in each innings.Taibu – who’s playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe – had led Zimbabwe XI in their opening game, and has been replaced by opener Vusi Sibanda. The other six inclusions are Chamu Chibabha, Gregory Strydom, Kyle Jarvis, Ed Rainsford, John Nyumbu and Samuel Mwakayeni.Kenya have recalled seamer Ragheb Aba to the squad after more than a year’s absence. Aba replaces Seren Waters, who is unavailable due to study commitments in England. Kenya retain a familiar line-up with Maurice Ouma leading them, and will bank on the experience of Steve Tikolo – also playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe – along with Thomas Odoyo and Alex Obanda.Zimbabwe find themselves at sixth place in the Intercontinental Cup, having played just one game, while their opponents Kenya have fared better, placed at No.2 after their 247-run win over Canada in King City in August.Kenya then play a five-match ODI series with Zimbabwe between October 12-18 in Harare.ZIMBABWE XI (squad): Vusi Sibanda (capt), Friday Kasteni, Chamu Chibabha, Gregory Strydom, Forster Mutizwa, Regis Chikabvha, Timycen Maruma, Kyle Jarvis, Shingirai Masakadza, Ed Rainsford, John Nyumbu, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Samuel Mwakayemi.KENYA (squad): Maurice Ouma (capt), Rageb Aga, Steve Tikolo, David Obuya, Rakep Patel, Alex Obanda, Collins Oduya, Nehimiah Odhiambo, Thomas Odoyo, Jimmy Kamande, Eligah Otieno, Lameck Onyango, Alfred Luseno, Peter Ogondo, Hiren Varalya.

Liverpool fans call for Raphinha signing

A number of Liverpool supporters have urged the Reds to sign Leeds United star Raphinha after it was revealed that they wanted him in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp had a quiet transfer window last time around, with Ibrahima Konate the only signing and the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri leaving the club.

One player with whom they have been linked is Raphinha, who has been a fantastic signing for Leeds, scoring 11 goals and registering nine assists.

The 24-year-old ended up staying put for the time being but his exit from Elland Road may not be too far away, given the Whites’ current lowly standing in the Premier League.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool wanted Raphinha in the summer, which suggests that they could potentially go back in for him in the near future.

Bielsa must unleash LUFC’s Shackleton

Leeds United’s latest Premier League outing against Brentford was filled with positives and negatives, the positives being the return of Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford, who scored their late equalising goal to rescue a 2-2 draw, after the duo had been out with injuries.

The negatives, however, were that Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips had to go off with injuries. With this in mind, this could be a perfect time for Marcelo Bielsa to put his faith in one of Leeds’ young talents.

Opportunity knocks

Even though 22-year-old Jamie Shackleton has made nine appearances in the Premier League this season, predominantly playing in the right-back position while Ayling was out injured, he has spent their previous two fixtures on the substitutes bench.

Now that Phillips and Cooper have picked up these unfortunate blows against Brentford, this could pave the way for Shackleton to get back into the team either in a midfield or defensive capacity depending on how serious the injuries are, giving Bielsa the opportunity to tinker with his team again and give the youngster a chance to prove his worth and quality again.

As one of the Yorkshire club’s youth academy prodigies, during his time on the pitch for Leeds in the Premier League this season, Shackleton, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £17k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has shown his quality on the ball with an average passing accuracy percentage of 88% as well as proving his defensive capabilities by racking up an average of 2.4 tackles per game.

Labelled as a “superb” player by Darren Bent, Shackleton’s overall performances have earned the Englishman a season rating of 6.71/10, making him Leeds’ joint-fourth highest rated outfield player according to WhoScored.

Should Phillips’ injury keep him out of the team for a significant period of time, Bielsa should definitely consider playing Shackleton in midfield and allow him to unleash his defensive qualities once again, especially since Leeds only have Mateusz Klich and Adam Forshaw to rely on as other options in central midfield.

With Leeds having games against Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool next up in the league, it seems as though Bielsa’s side could do with all the defensive reinforcements that they can muster with three of those teams scoring more than double the number of league goals Leeds have scored so far this term.

Ireland in hot pursuit of Full Member status

The Irish will seek to become the ICC’s eleventh Full Member nation, and the first to rise from the Associate ranks since Bangladesh in 2000

Ireland have announced an ambitious plan to ascend to Full Member status within the ICC. The Irish will seek to become the ICC’s eleventh Full Member nation, and the first to rise from the Associate ranks since Bangladesh in 2000.Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland’s chief executive, has sent a letter to the ICC stating his board’s intention to apply for Full Membership – a potential pathway to Test cricket – and to seek clarification on the process. The ICC have since informed Ireland of the council’s criteria and expectations, and the matter will now be discussed at the next chief executives’ meeting, scheduled for later this month.”There’s a long way to go,” Deutrom told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “Traditionally, applications have taken two, three or more years. There are clearly a large number of hoops we have to jump through. In terms of challenges that are facing us, yes, there is clearly an awful lot of work we need to do just to fulfill the compliance and existing criteria.”It perhaps sets in motion a process that allows others to see the levels they need to reach in order to fulfill the same ambitions. It shouldn’t be easy. Test cricket is regarded as the pinnacle of the game and it’s quite right that those trying to ascend to Test cricket, or just Full Membership without necessarily involving Test cricket, have to ensure that they are coming up to some pretty rigorous criteria.”Ireland’s cricketers have mounted a strong case for consideration as a Full Member nation with a string of solid performances in the four-day, 50 and 20-over formats, but still face a difficult task convincing existing members of the political and commercial benefits that their elevation would bring to the game. Unlike Bangladesh, the most recently-elected Full Member, Ireland does not boast a large population and player base to draw from. Bangladesh also provided India and its allies with another regional partner – and vote – at the ICC table. Ireland’s introduction could potentially upset that balance. The difficulties encountered by Ireland’s cricketing administrators were highlighted earlier this year when a television rights package could not be negotiated for the home ODI against an England side less than a week removed from winning the Ashes. Attendances for other international matches have been modest, as cricket struggles to gain a foothold in a nation already absorbed by Gaelic football, hurling, football and rugby. Despite such obstacles, Cricket Ireland has evolved commercially to the point that ICC funding only accounts for 30% of the board’s total revenue. If the ICC is serious about its long-espoused aim of expanding the game beyond its traditional strongholds, Ireland might be in with a chance. Full Member funding would better equip Ireland to retain its top players – the defections of Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan to England were evidence of Associate cricket’s glass ceiling – and offer a progression path for other aspiring nations to follow.”In terms of television, there is no doubt whatsoever that that was an issue last year,” Deutrom said. “We had television for our game in 2006 when Ireland played England and in 2007 when India and South Africa were here. We didn’t get a broadcaster for 2009. I think there were some financial problems involved in that. I think the problem by and large, from what broadcasters say to me, is that they don’t like to do deals on a one-by-one basis. They prefer to package things up. If we were in a situation whereby we were embedded in the Future Tours Programme, then we would have sufficient home cricket to be able to go out and talk to another broadcaster.”From a political perspective, I would regard many people on the chief executives’ committee and the board as extremely fair-minded. I hope this doesn’t come across sounding naive, but I think the decision should hopefully be made on its merits and not on the basis of any political alliances.”Ireland’s recent performances have raised hopes that they could prove competitive at the game’s elite level. In 41 one-day internationals since 2006, the Irish have won 17 matches, highlighted by their three-wicket triumph over Pakistan at the 2007 World Cup. Ireland won eight consecutive completed matches against Scotland, Kenya and Canada before suffering a narrow three-run defeat to England in their most recent ODI. That sequence included victory in the World Cup qualification tournament in South Africa earlier this year, which they capped with an emphatic nine-wicket demolition of Canada in the final.Ireland have proven similarly competitive in the 20-over ranks, winning four of their eight completed matches including a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the World Twenty20 in June that propelled them into the Super Eights stage of the tournament. They are currently vying for their fourth consecutive Intercontinental Cup crown, and remain unbeaten in four-day competition since 2004.”The key area where we see the strength of our proposal would be the performance on field of the senior men’s squad over the last couple of years,” Deutrom said. “In all three forms of the game we’ve proven ourselves above our associate rivals.”If you think about the reasons why (players) are going (to England), it’s because they want to be as good as they can be. They want to be able to find the vehicles and the forums to be able to express their abilities. In that way, we need to make sure that our players are aware of our ambitions. If we just happen to bump along as an associate and say, ‘We’re the No.1 associate now, that’s all we’re going to be forever,’ I think we’re going to lose more and more players. Our ambitions are surely to make sure that cricket is as successful as possible in Ireland … and to that extent we need to make sure that our players are aware that that is exactly where we’re going.”Even if it’s obviously too late for the likes of Eoin Morgan and Ed Joyce, what we’re saying to the next rung of Irish players coming through is: we are ambitious, we are interested in going for Full Membership but it may take some time, and we are doing our very best to put in a contract system that allows you to consider playing cricket as a career in Ireland in the same way as you might want to play cricket for England and to complement your county career.”

– A gente estava 17 pontos atrás.

Everton chiefs eye Ferguson manager role

Speaking to talkSPORT, as transcribed by Goodison News, commentator Sam Matterface has made an interesting claim involving assistant Everton boss Duncan Ferguson.

The Lowdown: Benitez under fire…

Toffees boss Rafael Benitez was appointed to replace ex-manager Carlo Ancelotti who suddenly and unceremoniously left to take up the Real Madrid role.

The Spaniard’s appointment was a controversial one bringing divided opinions given his ties to bitter Merseyside rivals Liverpool and their league form hasn’t exactly been sparkling since his arrival.

Currently lying 14th and eight points off the drop zone, speculation has arisen over whether Everton could opt to replace him already.

An unlikely 1-1 draw away to European champions Chelsea on Thursday evening would have eased the pressure somewhat but many supporters will be wondering who could replace Benitez if the club opted to part company.

The Latest: Matterface makes Ferguson claim…

Speaking to talkSPORT (via GN), their commentator Matterface has now made a claim involving assistant boss Ferguson.

He says that the 49-year-old is ‘in the thoughts of the ownership’ with some Everton chiefs, including chairman Bill Kenwright, eyeing him for a possible first time managerial role.

“Duncan Ferguson is in the thoughts of the ownership if there is a change of manager,” Matterface explained.

“Certainly there is a split on the board and some of those, including Bill Kenwright, would like to see Duncan get the job eventually.

“He’s going to make the step up, I’m sure it’s going to be the next time.”

The Verdict: Best candidate?

Ferguson attracted huge praise for his brief stint as caretaker boss before Ancelotti arrived at the Toffees helm, with pundit Kevin Phillips explaining how he was ‘pivotal’ to their revival at the time whilst doing an ‘unbelievable’ job (Football Insider).

The ex-Toffees player has since returned to his assistant role and continues to draw acclaim as former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan recently called him ‘huge’.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin also recently spoke of his admiration for Ferguson, with it being clear he has respect inside and outside the club whilst knowing Everton like the back of his hand.

Following his years of brilliant service, we believe he certainly shouldn’t be ruled out as a candidate should Benitez leave.
