Dele may’ve played his last game for Spurs

With Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side heading into Tuesday afternoon’s Premier League fixture against Southampton in an excellent run of domestic form, the 52-year-old will have been quietly confident of picking up yet another three points at St Mary’s.

However, despite Mohammed Salisu’s sending off in the first half today, Tottenham could not find the winning goal against Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side, with James Ward-Prowse’s spectacular 25th-minute strike and Harry Kane’s 41st-minute penalty being the only goals in a 1-1 draw.

As is perhaps to be expected after such a result, a number of Conte’s starting XI had an afternoon to forget against Saints, with Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal all turning in below-par displays on the south coast.

However, it will undoubtedly be Dele Alli who is most disappointed with his performance against Southampton on the Tottenham bus home, as the 25-year-old was once again ineffective in the middle of the park after being handed an opportunity to impress by Conte.

Lost 60% of his duels

Indeed, during his 62 minutes on the pitch, the £17m-rated midfielder failed to have a single shot at goal, completed just 17 of his 24 attempted passes (a success rate of 71%) and lost the ball on 12 separate occasions.

The £100k-per-week earner also failed with his one attempted dribble, was beaten by an opponent twice and lost six of his 10 duels, a failure rate of 60%.

These returns saw the player who Darren Anderton dubbed a “freak” receive a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.6, the third-worst of any Tottenham player to step onto the pitch today.

As such, with it being widely reported that Dele could be on his way out of north London in the January transfer window, if this was the England international’s last chance to impress Conte, he certainly did not take it. Today’s draw with Southampton could well be the last time the 25-year-old ever pulls on a Tottenham shirt.

'We may have relaxed' – Shakib

Reflecting on his team’s sensational collapse on the fourth day, the Bangladesh captain believes that his side paid the price for relaxing during the Mohammad Ashraful-Shahadat Hossain partnership

Sriram Veera in Mirpur27-Jan-2010

India eventually romped to an easy win, but if Bangladesh had applied themselves for longer on the fourth morning, they could have made the visitors sweat•BCB Media

It was a stunningly candid revelation by Shakib Al Hasan in the press conference. “When Shahadat [Hossain] and [Mohammad] Ashraful were batting we may have got slightly relaxed. They had made batting look easy. We were laughing and chatting in the dressing room and somewhere, at some point, we relaxed and we were not thinking about the game as much as we should have done.” If only the perceptive awareness that this quick post-mortem analysis reveals, had kicked in earlier.Even Zaheer Khan, the wrecker-in-chief, was surprised by the implosion. “It was surprising. Looking at the conditions, it felt they could have fought that phase and made things tough for us.” But it was a strange day. In a Dhaka minute, everything changed. When Shahadat and Ashraful were batting, one smelt fight in the air, felt their sense of purpose, thought about India missing two batsmen, and caught a brief glimpse of the possibility of a memorable fightback. There was not a single moment to relax. Bangladesh did and they lost the match. It wasn’t a surprise that they lost but one was taken aback by how quickly it all happened. And yet, the pleasant sun-lit morning had promised so much.Even India, it seemed, were on the back foot initially. The fielding was getting ragged, overthrows happened, a catch was dropped, the fielders were pushed back, MS Dhoni was forced to make a few bowling changes and the pitch, as it seemingly does in these times, appeared to get flatter. “The pitch got slower and lower”, Zaheer Khan said later. “There was nothing major for spinners and it was the fast bowlers’ responsibility to put their hands up.”Initially, even Zaheer was unable to make a breakthrough. Shahadat and Ashraful had added 50 runs in 13 overs and it wasn’t just the quantity of runs but the manner in which it came that raised the hopes of a lead and a fascinating end-game. What caught the eye was of course Shahadat’s brazen approach, but it was Ashraful’s attitude that gave hope. He wasn’t intent on self-destruction, he wasn’t living on the edge and he wasn’t struggling. In fact he looked almost calm and pushed the ball into gaps and lived off deflections. It was the closest he got to serenity in this series. It’s at this time the players in the dressing room must have relaxed. One can understand why it happened, but it is something that the captain Shakib and coach Jamie Siddons should sort out. The rest of us will shrug it off saying, “That’s Bangladesh cricket for you”.Shahadat had to fall at some point; he had done his job and even Ashraful fell to a good ball – Pragyan Ojha got one to turn and jump to force a hurried prod. It is at this point that everything started to go wrong. Shakib walked in and clouted his first ball over long-on. There was nothing wrong in that as Shakib explained later, “It was there to be hit”. Perhaps it was. However, he soon fell to a fatal shot, trying to create something out of nothing. It was the beginning of the end.Shakib is a busy batsman and likes to play his shots but perhaps this time he got too ahead of himself. His critics will ask if the shot was on, given that there was a man at short-leg. Maybe, the ongoing controversy involving the alleged rebuke from the BCB president, got to him and he felt the urge to make a statement on the field. Perhaps, it was just a brain-freeze resulting from over confidence. Or perhaps it was simply a case of a wrong execution of a shot that he plays so often and has done so well in the past. Who can tell?Shakib tried to answer: “When I got in to bat, my plan was to just bat. The first ball was there to be hit. The sweep shot that I got out to… I just mistimed it.”Was it just an answer for the press or the truth, we wouldn’t know, but it doesn’t reveal much about his state of mind at that juncture. His statement about how team had relaxed offers a better pointer, perhaps.Zaheer sensed an opening when Shakib fell and hit them hard. It was too much for Bangladesh and they were knocked out.Tomorrow’s local papers are going to be filled with passionate anger over the collapse. Shakib must have been stunned by the reaction at the press meet. As soon as he finished his “relaxed” statement, he was staring at several pupils dilated in anger. And angry questions. He seemed to be taken aback by the intensity. It was a sad way to end the series for Shakib, who has been dignity personified through out. He did not react emotionally to Virender Sehwag’s statements, he stood up for his team when he perceived that the BCB president was making unreasonable allegations, he did not wash dirty linen in public and supported his team-mates. In the end he must have felt very alone out there.

Chris Jack drops Rangers update on John Souttar

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has now turned his attentions towards defender John Souttar as the Ibrox side look to make some further additions in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to The Glasgow Times’ Chris Jack, the Gers have now made their move to sign Souttar, whose contract at Hearts comes to an end in the summer.

His report added: “Championship clubs Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest are all interested in the Scotland defender but Rangers are keen to add Souttar to their ranks amid ongoing doubts over the long-terms futures of several defensive options.

“Van Bronckhorst will be given some of the funds raised from Nathan Patterson’s £12m to Everton as he seeks to put his own stamp on the Ibrox squad. But Souttar has been identified as a key Bosman target to bolster his defensive options and Rangers will attempt to convince him to turn down a move to England this summer.”

Would be a superb signing

With his extensive experience in the Scottish Premiership, and the fact he would be available on a free transfer given his contract expires soon, this has all the hallmarks of being a transfer masterstroke for the Gers.

Former Hearts boss Craig Levein once raved about the centre-back’s combination of defensive prowess and ability on the ball, saying: “I’ve known him since he was 12 years old and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time. He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive.”

As per Whoscored, his 77.4% pass accuracy is the second-best of any Hearts defender this season in the Scottish Premiership, while his 58.1 passes per game is the second-best among any of his teammates, regardless of position – exactly the kind of modern-day defender Van Bronckhorst will surely be looking for.

Gers fans will surely be buzzing with signing the 6 foot 1 Souttar on a free.

Meanwhile, Rangers are eyeing this Championship goalkeeper…

The ICC has written to the Indian board expressing concerns over the facilities at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, one of the eight venues for the 2011 World Cup. Andy Atkinson, the ICC pitch consultant, has reportedly suggested several changes that need to be undertaken ahead of the tournament that starts in 11 months.”The quality of the outfield was bumpy with small bare patches and divots all around and below the expected standard for international cricket,” read a notice given to the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which hosts the venue. “Grass appeared lacking in nutrients and unanticipated amount of weeds present. It is noticeable that the playing surface needs renovation and repair to bring it up to the required condition. Overall, the condition of playing surface is disappointing.”Speaking to the daily , Brijesh Patel, the KSCA secretary, said: “The ICC team came at the end of last season [December] and the pitch was totally worn out. We are aware of the kind of wickets that are required for ODIs, Tests and Twenty20s.”The Indian board’s chief administrative officer, Ratnakar Shetty, was confident the KSCA would address the ICC’s concerns. “What they [ICC] have expressed are just a few cautions. We’re definitely following it up with all eight associations and I am sure after the IPL, Bangalore will be devoting time to develop the outfield and the pitch,” he said. This season’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh was shifted to Mysore after Rahul Dravid expressed concerns over the pitch and outfield, and later the final was also held at the Gangothri Glades owing to the flatness of the Chinnaswamy surface.

West Ham United: Journalist loves links to ‘statement signing’ Jonathan David

According to journalist Adam White (via Give Me Sport), Lille attacker Jonathan David would be a ‘statement signing’ for West Ham if they are able to secure his signature in the January window.

The Lowdown: Hammers interested in David

Reliable source ExWHUemployee previously claimed that West Ham are interested in the signing of prolific Ligue 1 striker David, who has netted 12 league goals in 19 appearances this season.

However, he further downplayed this rumour by stating that the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are also interested in the player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite this, the Mail on Sunday have reported renewed interest in the signing, which came to excite a lot of Hammers fans, with many having tipped the club to sign another striker to rival Michail Antonio.

The Latest: White thrilled by links

Considering the European giants who are reportedly interested in David, White thinks it would be extremely impressive if the Hammers were to pull off the signing.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, White claimed: “It would be a huge statement signing given the clubs that are interested.”

This arises after Jeunes Footeux have revealed that a move for David would cost £45million; the same fee that the Irons paid for current Ajax star Sebastien Haller.

The Verdict: Incredible but unlikely?

Whilst he was playing in the Belgian league, former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck described David as ‘a phenomenon’ and further claimed that he was ‘the best player in the country’.

The striker is Lille’s top scorer by some margin this season, having netted eight more than second place Burak Yilmaz. He is as equally prolific on the international stage, having totalled 18 goals in 24 appearances for the Canadian national team.

David’s qualities are evidently clear. However, this has never been a debate for the Hammers. What David Moyes will be worried about is whether they can compete with the European giants, as they set to battle it out for the player’s signature.

Even if they can convince the promising young forward to join, then comes the price tag – can we really expect GSB to shell out another fee similar to the one they spent on Haller after how that went?

In other news, West Ham allegedly have their eyes on a player who Zinedine Zidane rates extremely highly…

E a torcida bradou: “Queremos raça!”

A pressão surtiu efeito.
