Kongonis and Rwenzori start to dominate

A round-up of matches from the fourth weekend of Kenya’s new East African Cup and East Africa Elite League

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Sep-2011East Africa Premier LeagueRwenzori Warriors extended their lead in the table and retained their 100% record with a crushing 106-run victory over winless Coast Pekee. The Warriors amassed 184 for 2, Roger Mukasa scoring 126 not out from 64 deliveries despite being hampered by a groin injury, and the Pekee, who have failed to score well in any of their outings, only managed 78 for 6 in reply.Rift Valley Rhinos failed to maintain the pressure on the Warriors, losing to Nile Knights by four wickets. The Rhinos started well but then subsided from 26 for 1 to 32 for 6, and in the end only mustered 79. The Knights paced their chase perfectly, Davis Arinaitwe anchoring the innings with 40 not out as wickets fell around him, and they eased home off the first ball of the final over.Kongonis moved second despite losing their first two matches, beating local rivals Nairobi Buffaloes by 10 runs at Nairobi Club. Kongonis’ 86 for 7 did not seem enough, but the Buffaloes lost their way after reaching 40 for 3 and lost their last six wickets for 18 runs.East African CupKongonis remained top of the pile after they completed the weekend double over Nairobi Buffaloes, winning the 50-over tie by four wickets. The Buffaloes won the toss and opted to bat and their openers took a patient approach which never gave the middle order a platform to post a huge total and they ended up on 190 for 9. The pick of the bowlers was youngster Paramveer Singh who finished with impressive figures of 4 for 38. Kongonis held they nerve after the early dismissal of Baden Odinga to put together a 92-run second-wicket partnership between new recruit Abdul Rehman (38) and the impressive Gordon Brown who conjured up 82. The Buffaloes bowlers had little to defend and only Pritesh Rabadia’s effort of 3 for 26 off 7 overs had checked the runs. They were again guilty of several dropped chances that let off the hosts; they have to improve in this department if they are to compete for the title. In Nakuru, hosts Rift Valley Rhinos registered a morale boosting win against the visiting Nile Knights by 22 runs (D/L) . The rain-interrupted match was decided at the end of the 44th over. The Knights won the toss and kept matters in check by bowling out the Rhinos for 162, but the Rhinos ‘never die attitude’ turned the match on its head to leave the visitors on 132 for 9 by the time the heavens opened. Though, the match could have gone either way, the Knights were left frustrated after their match a week earlier was rained out with them in an almost insurmountable position.Rwenzori Warriors moved second after an indifferent start to the competition, albeit over whipping boys Coast Pekee. At least Pekee managed to muster a decent total, making 205 thanks largely to Nadeem Ahmed’s brilliant 82 off 81 balls, while Ivan Kakande was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 32. As has been the case in all the EAC games played in Uganda, the rains came down in the interval. The Duckworth/ Lewis method therefore came into play with the Warriors left needing 154 to win in 30 overs, and that proved an easy chase as they won by five wickets with 16 balls in hand.

England's opportunity against injury-hit India

ESPNcricinfo previews the first ODI between India and England in Hyderabad

The Preview by Sidharth Monga13-Oct-2011

The England batsmen’s response to the conditions will be crucial•Getty Images

Match factsIndia v England, October 14, Hyderabad
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Big PictureIndia’s winless tour of England has not been without what initially seemed like positives. At least the admen had moved on from the theme that has been the easiest way to sell an India-England series in India. Except that colonial references have now made way for war ones. “There’s no weapon deadlier than vengeance,” says one in all caps. “India takes on England. The war resumes this October.”To give the marketing machinery generous benefit of doubt, India and England haven’t exactly offered them much by the way of close series. India last beat England in England in September 2007. The corresponding date for England in India is April 2006. India have whitewashed only two Test series (longer than two matches); one of those victims was England. Four out of their seven whitewashes (in series longer than two matches) have been handed by England; the last one earlier this year now invokes the deadly weapon of vengeance.Except that this is no revenge series. For one of your three worst tours of all time, including the 4-0 Test whitewash for the then No. 1 side, is not avenged over five ODIs. It will, however, be an opportunity to know what a win feels like. India last enjoyed that feeling in June in the West Indies. It will be an opportunity to arrest a slide, stack up some victories and regain confidence before they leave for Australia, their next really big assignment. It won’t be easy, though, playing as they are without Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel. Given their schedules, though, they better get used to this, at least in limited-overs formats. It will be an opportunity for their opponents to set a record right. That they have won only one of their last 13 completed ODIs against India in India is enough to justify England’s remarkably early arrival and long preparation. Most of those defeats suggest the lack of the power game required in the subcontinent, which along with Test series wins in India and Sri Lanka stands in England’s way of their aim of all-round domination.England can’t quite claim to know the grammar of subcontinent ODIs well. They entertained in the World Cup, but their batsmen tried to win it through cute dabs and paddles. When England were sleepwalking through a 5-0 ODI series defeat in 2008-09, David Lloyd told the story through the way the respective sides’ batsmen prepared to face a delivery. The Indians, he observed, had higher back lifts, ready to impart power into the shots and also trusting the pitches, looking to play down the ground. The England batsmen didn’t lift those bats as high in preparation, they often pre-meditated, the crookedness of the face either way to run the ball behind square for a single, at times two, stood out.England, though, are in a much better mental state than their two previous trips to India. In 2008-09 the captain and the coach weren’t quite moving in the same direction; in the World Cup they were tired, injured and possibly longing for home. They will also gain from an Indian XI weakened by injuries. Still a major part of responsibility to prevent this from being yet another one-sided India-England series lies with their batsmen – crucially missing Eoin Morgan – and their response to the conditions.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)
India LTLLL
England WTWWW
Watch out for …Craig Kieswetter comes with the promise of the power game required in India. He also comes with the confidence of having done well against India in the English summer, and then in the Champions League T20. England will want positive starts from him.Gautam Gambhir will make a comeback not only to the side but also to the opening role, which he had to relinquish during the World Cup. This is the start of a defining season for him, a season he will want to get through without fitness-related layoffs, a season he will want to end with runs in Australia. Form doesn’t really apply after the various breaks, but for what it is worth Gambhir has reached double figures in 17 of his last 18 innings, averaging 58 with two centuries and six fifties.Team newsDespite Gambhir’s comeback, both Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane are likely to be rewarded for their good work in England. As is the case with Ravindra Jadeja. The bowling, if it was possible, looks even weaker than it did in England. They will be forced to try Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav at some point in the series.India (likely) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Parthiv Patel, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ajinkya Rahane, 5 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 R Ashwin, 10, 11 two out of Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Vinay KumarJonny Bairstow and Ravi Bopara have made strong middle-order statements for England, which leaves a close competition. There is a case for including all five of Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Bopara and Bairstow. There is an equally strong case for playing Samit Patel at 7, as the second-spinner-allrounder.England (likely) 1 Alastair Cook (capt.), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Jade Dernbach, 11 Steven FinnPitch and conditionsThe scores in the two practice games have ranged between 114 and 367, but don’t expect any favours for the bowlers, unless the pitch just turns out to be really slow. An expected high of 31 degree celsius and 61% humidity should test batsmen on the new no-runner rule. If the forecast of “scattered thunderstorms” doesn’t come to fruition, that is.Stats and triviaAndrew Strauss, no longer part of England’s ODI plans, scored 445 runs in his previous five matches in India. If they all get picked, Kieswetter, Cook, Bairstow, Dernbach and Finn will be playing their first ODI in India.India have lost two of their 19 completed home ODIs, both to South Africa. Similarly they have lost just two home Tests since March 2006, both to South Africa.

Raina double-ton puts UP on top

A round-up of the third day of the first round of matches in the Ranji Trophy Elite 2011-12

Group AAn unbeaten double-century from Suresh Raina put Uttar Pradesh in charge against Punjab, at the Punjab Cricket Association Ground. Raina’s effort was well-supported by Parvinder Singh, who equalled his best first-class score: 138. UP had begun day three on 221 for 3, with Raina and Parvinder at the crease. The pair both scored at a commendable rate and went on to add 241 for the fourth wicket. Parvinder was snagged by part-timer Karan Goel, and Manpreet Gony got Arish Alam to edge behind not long after with UP only 100 ahead, but another big stand followed.Piyush Chawla smacked 73 not out off 67 balls as his side looked for quick runs, and put on 146 at almost six an over with Raina. The declaration came soon after Raina went past 200 and his previous top score to finish with 204 at a rate of 71.32. Trailing by 246, Punjab lost two quick wickets ahead of stumps, to finish 26 for 2. Raina’s hundred will put pressure on Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli to perform against West Indies in the Test that begins tomorrow, should they be picked in the XI.Karnataka took control of their match against Rajasthan at the Field Club Ground, after their bowlers struck regularly to keep Rajasthan to 255. After Karnataka piled up a mammoth 623 for 6 in their first innings, Rajasthan needed their batsmen to build long innings after getting set. But none of them managed to do that – Ashok Menaria (who consistently churned out the big scores for Rajasthan during the knockout stages last season), Robin Bist and Rohit Jhalani all got to 45, but none of them could not manage more than Menaria’s 57.While new-ball bowlers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun knocked over the top and middle order, taking five wickets between them, left-arm spinner K Appanna cleaned up the tail to finish with 4 for 35. With Rajasthan still trailing by 368, Vinay enforced the follow-on. The opening batsmen’s cautious approach – they scored at less than two runs an over – worked, as they safely saw off the 27 overs before stumps, finishing with 51 for 0.Orissa adopted a very cautious approach against Saurashtra at the Barabati Stadium, edging from 51 for no loss to 246 for 4 in a full-day’s play. Opener Natraj Behera scored most of the 195 runs they managed off 90 overs, carrying his bat through the day and completing his second first-class hundred in the process.Bikas Pati and Biplab Samantray afforded Natraj Behera some support, getting past 40, but neither could hang around long enough to threaten Saurashtra’s first-innings’ score of 545. In the final session, Natraj Behera found another reliable partner in Abhilash Mallick, who finished not out on 35. But Orissa will need both players to bat out as much of the final day as possible to have any chance of securing a draw. Natraj Behera is one short of his best first-class score, 113.File photo: Parthiv Patel led Gujarat’s solid reply at Eden Gardens•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mumbai’s spinners, Ramesh Powar and Ankeet Chavan combined to bowl out Railways for 256 at the Karnail Singh Stadium, after which Wasim Jaffer enforced the follow on. Railways had resumed on 66 for 3 and their captain, Sanjay Bangar, made a patient 89. But no one else could get a half-century, as Powar and Chavan picked up three wickets apiece. That meant Railways folded still 227 runs behind Mumbai. They began their second innings in better fashion though, going to stumps 121 for 2, trailing by 106. They lost Shreyas Khanolkar cheaply, but their other opener, Shivakant Shukla who is in his debut season with Railways after transferring from UP, held firm. He put on 89 with Faiz Fazal, before part-timer Suryakumar Yadav had Fazal edging behind just prior to stumps. Shukla finished unbeaten on 64.Group BHundreds from Parthiv Patel and Priyank Panchal carried Gujarat to 315 for 2 in response to Bengal’s 560 at Eden Gardens. The pair began the day with the score on 10 for no loss, and went on to string together a 284-run partnership. Parthiv Patel’s runs came at a good clip: he hit 143 at 70.79 with 18 fours. Panchal’s 139 was his best first-class score and, though a bit slower, included 19 boundaries – 16 fours and three sixes. However, Bengal’s spinners – Iresh Saxena and Saurasish Lahiri – removed the pair in the final session, as Gujarat went to stumps 245 runs in the deficit. The hundred could boost Parthiv’s chances of a Test comeback, as the reserve opener, during the much-anticipated Australia tour that kicks off at the end of the year.Debutant Milind Kumar and Rajat Bhatia went on to complete centuries on the third day at Roshanara Club Ground, to give Delhi the first-innings’ lead against Haryana, despite a collapse. Milind fell for 119 soon after the partnership had crossed the 150-run mark. Puneet Bisht could not get going, but Pawan Negi settled in. His 41-run stand with Bhatia looked promising when Bhatia was cleaned up by Amit Vashisht for 107.That triggered a collapse in which Delhi went from 318 for 5 to 352 all out, with a 59-run lead. The bowlers shared the wickets around. Haryana lost their captain Rahul Dewan early, before a half-century stand between Nitin Saini and Sunny Singh helped wipe out the deficit. However, Bhatia struck late in the day, effectively reducing Haryana to 35 for 2.There was no play possible in the Tamil Nadu v Baroda match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium due to rain, for the third day running.
