Cook, Flower claim tactics 'vindicated'

Alastair Cook and Andy Flower insisted their tactics had been “vindicated” after England won the second Test against New Zealand by 247 runs to clinch a 2-0 series victory.

George Dobell28-May-2013Alastair Cook and Andy Flower insisted their tactics had been “vindicated” after England won the second Test against New Zealand by 247 runs to clinch a 2-0 series victory. While Cook admitted he endured some nervous moments waiting for the rain to clear, he also defended his decision not to enforce the follow-on and to delay his declaration until after lunch on day four. By then England had a lead of 467 and meteorologists were warning that the fifth day could be severely curtailed by rain.So it proved, too, with only 45 minutes possible before lunch and play not resuming until 3pm. But it was long enough for England to claim the final four wickets they required to secure victory.”The result definitely vindicates the decision,” Cook said. “There is absolutely no doubt about that at all. To win by 250 runs is a good win and in just over three days cricket effectively, it is an outstanding performance. You are judged as a captain on results. In this game we have won by 250 runs.”I would not say it was a sleepless night but we were praying for an opportunity to get enough time to go out there and win the game. Clearly, I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was look out the window. We knew rain was about but we thought there would be a few windows of opportunity.”While there was much to celebrate for England – the form and fitness of Graeme Swann, the hostility of Steven Finn and the batting of Joe Root and Cook – one or two areas of concern remain. The form of Nick Compton, 39 runs in four innings this series, was a disappointment and debate over his position will continue. With Kevin Pietersen back in training and likely to return to the middle order for the Ashes, moving Root to open is one option that is sure to be discussed in the coming weeks.Neither Cook nor Flower would commit to Compton’s selection for the Ashes, but Cook did admit that changing such “an important position” ahead of such high-profile games would constitute “a risk”.”He’s struggled in these few Tests, certainly,” Flower added. “The Ashes is quite a long way away. Let’s allow the dust to settle on this series. Then we’ll chat about the line-up and the conditions and the opposition.”He’s got to go away, get back into form and score some heavy runs for Somerset. He goes back into a couple of one-day games. Hopefully the one-day games will be good for him. He can go out and enjoy hitting the ball. That will be the catalyst for him going into the first-class game feeling confident.”Flower, in particular, appeared to take exception to the line of questioning from some media following the game. Talking to the BBC, he said: “I thought it was a very good performance by our side. We won by over 200 runs. Cook scored another hundred. He has 25 Test hundreds; more than Viv Richards or Greg Chappell. Swann is back in form and his elbow has come through surgery recently. The two young Yorkshire guys have had a great game. Finn on a flat deck has bowled outstandingly well. Those are all things that I’d prefer to focus on than some of the negative things you mention.”But both Cook and Flower admitted there were some areas where England could have performed a little better. While Cook referred to criticism of Trott’s sedate progress on the third evening, 11 in 69 balls despite England beginning their second innings with a lead of 180, as “nit-picking”, Flower accepted that “he could have been more urgent”.”We had a great example of running between the wickets and the right sort of balance between defence and attack and urgency from the two young Yorkshire guys in the first innings,” Flower said. “They batted beautifully. Trott could have learned a little from those two. But the following morning he put us in a great position to win the game.”Flower and Cook justified the decision not to enforce the follow-on, believing the wicket would only deteriorate as the match progressed. “We chose to bat again and get well ahead of them,” Flower agreed. “We thought we would have enough time on a wearing pitch to take the last 10 wickets and that’s how it proved.”The start of the final day was noticeable for Flower remonstrating with the groundstaff to remove the covers more quickly.”I shouldn’t be out there doing the officials’ job,” Flower said. “It wasn’t raining so I’m not sure why the covers weren’t being removed. I don’t understand why it took so long to get the game started, regardless of the position that we were in. The officials have a responsibility to get the game going when conditions suit and it wasn’t raining. The lack of activity was baffling.”But in general, Flower was in the mood to celebrate the encouraging performances of Swann and the two young local batsmen, Root and Jonny Bairstow.”Swann bowled superbly in the first innings; the ball came out of his hand absolutely beautifully,” Flower said. “I didn’t actually think he bowled as well in the second innings. I don’t think he was quite comfortable with the ball. But he still took 6 for 90 and turned the match our way. I’m very encouraged by the way he’s bowling and very happy for him that his elbow has come through surgery as well as it has. He’s been really dedicated and disciplined in the way he’s rehabilitated his elbow and he seems in better physical condition than he has been for a while.”Root looks an excellent cricketer. His decision making in the middle; his balance has been excellent so far. It was great to see him get a hundred on his home ground and it was nice to see the enthusiasm and passion the Yorkshire supporters showed Joe.”It was also great to see Bairstow bat with him. I know how happy Jonny was for Joe to get that 100, which was really nice to see. They are both good young men. Very different characters. But hopefully they will both have very successful England careers.”

– A explicação é o trabalho do Alberto (Valentim).

Rasool, Mohit get maiden call-ups; Kohli to lead

Offspinner Parvez Rasool has become the first cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to earn a national call-up

Offspinner Parvez Rasool has become the first cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to earn a national call-up. He is part of the ODI squad to tour Zimbabwe, which will be led by Virat Kohli in the absence of the injured MS Dhoni.Apart from Dhoni four others were rested, which resulted in a maiden call-up for Haryana and Chennai Super Kings seamer Mohit Sharma. Cheteshwar Pujara, who has played 13 Tests already, was in line for an ODI debut after being recalled to the limited-overs side. Medium-pacer Jaydev Unadkat, who has played one Test, was also back in the ODI squad, as was Ajinkya Rahane.Among those rested were R Ashwin (playing non-stop since the start of India’s home season last August), Ishant Sharma (non-stop since Zaheer Khan was dropped during the England series), Umesh Yadav (came back from an injury during the IPL) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (non-stop since Pakistan came to India in December). M Vijay, though, was dropped from the squad for the five ODI matches scheduled between July 24 and August 3.There was no place for the dropped seniors – Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer – in either the ODI side or the A team that will tour South Africa. Vijay, however, has been named in the A squad. His ODI comeback might have been terminated based on just one innings – and Pujara’s return to fitness – but his A team selection is a show of faith in him for the longer formats after he struck two 150s in his comeback Test series against Australia.A sign of how inexperienced the ODI team is, and how seriously the selectors are taking the A tour, is that 10 of the India players in Zimbabwe will be part of the A tour. The A team will be captained by Pujara, and includes the top-two wicket-getters in the 2012-13 Ranji season: quicks Ishwar Pandey and Siddarth Kaul. Wriddhiman Saha joined Dinesh Karthik as the wicketkeeper, and Karnataka allrounder Stuart Binny was also picked.Shahbaz Nadeem, who was the leading spinner in the Ranji season, has also been picked to partner Rasool in the A team’s tri-series against Australia A and South Africa A, and two four-day games against South Africa A.Rasool, who made his first-class debut for J&K in the 2008-09 season, has played 17 first-class matches, scoring 1003 runs and taking 46 wickets. He was named in the India A squad for a tour game against Australia in February this year, and also played his first IPL season for Pune Warriors. The other newcomer, Mohit, has played 11 first-class matches for 44 wickets over two seasons, and had an impressive season for Super Kings in IPL 2013. He picked up 20 wickets in 15 matches to emerge as one of the leading uncapped players of the tournament.India squad: Virat Kohli (capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Cheteshwar Pujara, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Parvez Rasool, Shami Ahmed, R Vinay Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohit Sharma.India A squad: Cheteshwar Pujara (capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Parvez Rasool, Shahbaz Nadeem, Shami Ahmed, Stuart Binny, Ishwar Pandey, Jaydev Unadkat, Siddarth Kaul

England players quick on the draw

When they have had time to spare England’s players have also been experimenting with portraits of each other in aid of three of cricket’s most prominent charities

England’s cricketers have been quick on the draw this year – and not just against Australia. When they have had time to spare they have also been experimenting with portraits of each other in aid of three of English cricket’s most prominent charities – and the results are quite striking.Joe Root, whose 180 was a major factor in England’s thumping win against Australia in the second Investec Test at Lord’s, has also found time during his Test duties to knock up an appealing sketch of Ian Bell.As Bell has scored hundreds in both the first two Tests, it is a fair bet that Australia’s bowlers must visualise him as slightly more threatening than Root does. He drew on memories of his A level in art at Worksop College to present Bell as a respectful, inoffensive figure with hands placed formally behind his back. The camaraderie between James Anderson and Graeme Swann has often been seen in mischievous jokes about each other in media conferences. Now that mickey-taking has been captured artistically with characteristically humorous doodles of each other.Other appealing efforts are Steve Finn’s sketch of a Stuart Broad’s bowling action, somewhat more languid and unorthodox than Broad might feel it appears in real life, and a mass of facial hair which, naturally enough, turns out to be Matt Prior.England tested their artistic prowess on the tour of New Zealand earlier in the year. Regretfully, that meant they could not turn their talents on Australia, who might have found cartoons of their lowest moments as they have slipped 2-0 down in the Ashes series a bit hard to take.Cricket fans – we have shied away from saying art collectors – now have a chance to bid for the original portraits cricket fans will get the chance to bid for the original portraits. The auction will last for 10 days with all proceeds going to Cricket United – a joint fundraising appeal by The Lord’s Taverners, Chance to Shine and the PCA Benevolent Fund which aims to leave lasting benefits from the 2013 Investec Ashes series.

Nova joia! Conheça Igor Gomes, herói do São Paulo contra o Ituano

ECB chairman calls for light ruling change

Giles Clarke, the chairman of the ECB, has branded the end of the Investec Ashes “totally unsatisfactory” and called upon the ICC chief executive to change the regulations regarding bad light

Giles Clarke, the chairman of the ECB, has branded the end of the Investec Ashes series at The Oval “totally unsatisfactory” and called upon the ICC chief executive, David Richardson, to change the regulations regarding bad light at the earliest opportunity.A full house crowd booed the umpires after they led the players from the pitch with England requiring 21 more runs from the final four overs of the match. It was a disappointing end to a dramatic final day that had seen 447 runs scored, 17 wickets taken and Kevin Pietersen score the fastest half-century by an England player in Ashes history after a bold declaration from Australia and a sustained run-chase from England.Set 227 to win in 44 overs, England appeared to be on the brink of the win that would have secured a record-breaking 4-0 victory – a score line they have never achieved in an Ashes series in England – before the umpires intervened. It left Clarke fuming. While he understood that the umpires had little choice but to end play – the ICC playing regulations state that they are obliged to take the players from the field once the light has dropped to the level it had been when deemed unfit for play earlier in the match – he felt there should be some flexibility to respect the requirements of a spectator sport.”It’s totally unsatisfactory the way the game ended,” Clarke said. “The rules are clearly unacceptable and I expect David Richardson to change it at the next ICC chief executives’ meeting.”Tempers also become frayed on the pitch. With Australia sensing that the game was slipping away from them and their fielders struggling to pick-up the ball, captain Michael Clarke brought his concerns to the attention of the umpires. When the umpires attempted to take light meter readings out of sight of Clarke, Aleem Dar seemed to gently push the Australian captain away. It left Clarke unimpressed.”I remember Aleem touching me and I asked him politely to not touch me because if I touched him I’d be suspended for three games,” Michael Clarke said. “That’s all I can really remember. I just know a player is not allowed to touch an umpire. But for me personally, I have absolutely no issue with it at all.”The umpires took the players off the pitch on the second day of the game due to bad light. At the time they took a reading on their light meters which, in accordance with ICC regulations, set a precedent for the rest of the game. Whether the light on either day could be considered to have suggested an “obvious and foreseeable risk to the safety of any player or umpire, so that it would be unreasonable or dangerous for play to take place”, as the regulations currently state, is debatable.Michael Clarke, at least, felt the light was considerably worse by the end of day five than it had been at the end of day two. He also felt it was worse than when the umpires had led the players from the pitch in Manchester when Australia were in the dominant position.”There was no comparison,” Clarke said. “I don’t think I’m going to get into the numbers but I remember seeing the reading when I got told we had to go off in Manchester and I stood in the middle of the wicket today and there was a big difference. But for us, we just have to go on the umpire’s call. If they think it’s safe to keep playing then we keep playing.”I just asked the question: why we haven’t got the meter out here? It took a few overs to get it out. Just going on what’s happened in the past through this Test series, you know around that time is generally when it’s getting close to when the umpires have consistently taken us off the field.”Alastair Cook, the England captain, also expressed his empathy with the umpires. While he was naturally disappointed to be denied a memorable win, he admitted it has become “pretty dark”. He also credited Australia for an enterprising declaration that had set-up a highly entertaining final day of the series.”It would have been nice to finish the game off,” Cook said. “But rules are there for a reason. It was pretty dark and the umpires have strict guidelines. If the boot had been on the other foot, we would have asked the same questions as the Australians.”Of course we understand the frustration. It’s a shame for an amazing crowd. But you can also see the other side of it. We understand the rules and regulations. The umpires have to take emotion out of the game and do their job. They have to be consistently fair to both sides.”It is disappointing to be sitting here when we felt we could have scored those runs in the final four overs, but I understand the umpires’ decision.”
