O Palmeiras é a minha casa – disse Dudu.

Dhoni not fretful about India's inexperienced Test squad

As India prepared to depart for South Africa, captain MS Dhoni said it was no big deal that his team was inexperienced in Test cricket as even Sachin Tendulkar at some point played for the first time

Sidharth Monga in Mumbai01-Dec-2013

MS Dhoni said playing the ODIs before the Tests would help his batsmen settle in better in South Africa•BCCI

There was a time when a day before departure for a big tour would be the day for a captain to state intent or unwittingly reveal fears. With India’s most successful Test captain MS Dhoni, though, it has always been about cooling things down a bit. Hours before he and team-mates left for the big – not long – tour of South Africa, you couldn’t tell if Dhoni was the captain of a side that has won its last six Tests at home or one that has lost its last eight away. Or if the team is going to carry the confidence accumulated over the home season or doubts sown on the previous two trips – to England and to Australia. What is certain is, this is India’s most inexperienced batting line-up in a long, long time, India don’t have enough time to acclimatise to the conditions, and the conditions will be vastly different from what they are used to. About this being a new side Dhoni said even Sachin Tendulkar at some point played for the first time, about the lack of time he said the big help will be that the ODIs will be played before the Tests, and he didn’t shy away from the challenge of facing the bouncing and moving ball, something his side will need to get used to.”Well if you see there is always a new start,” Dhoni said when asked about cricket Indian cricket after Tendulkar. “When [Tendulkar] played his first Test match that was his first Test match.”What’s fairly important is that they [the new batsmen] have a good amount of exposure – even though it’s ODIs – outside India. That always helps you adjust to the pace and bounce of the wicket. It will be a new challenge for all of them, at the same time it is a learning curve. It’s the first time that they will be going there, and they will learn a lot in the series.”Dhoni knows his team might be kids when it comes to international experience – especially in testing conditions – but they won’t be treated with kid gloves should they fail. “There is a one thing for sure,” Dhoni said. “If you don’t perform and you’re part of the team, whether you’re playing your first Test or 50th Test match, criticism goes hand in hand so that’s something you can’t really get away from. If you don’t perform you will be criticised.”What they need to keep in mind, what’s really in their hands, is to prepare properly. Also, concentrate on what little things they need to do so that they’re successful. I think it’s all about that. Good exposure.”Dhoni was hopeful the sequence of the tour – ODIs, followed by a tour game, followed by the Tests – will help his side counter the reality of Indian cricket: no proper preparation for big tours. “I think it is always a challenge when you go and play abroad,” Dhoni said. “You are competing against the home team, and they know the conditions well. Their fast bowlers always know which length to bowl and also the areas in which they need to bowl. I feel the batsmen will have to quickly adjust to the bounce, see the deliveries which they can leave and push the bowlers to bowl at them instead of going to the bowlers.”But of course starting with the ODIs it is always a help. When you get to play the shots, you get rid of nerve factor initially. We are playing three ODIs initially, the guys will be expressing themselves, will be playing shots and then they will be carrying it forward into the Test matches as well. The good thing is that there won’t be too many changes when you compare the Test squad to the ODI squad.”Dhoni was a bit combative – in his quiet manner – when asked the regular questions before overseas tours. About the pace battery, he said he is always asked about the pace battery wherever he tours, and his response on the microphone cannot change. About the pressure, he said India are supposed to be under pressure even when they play Ireland, so he can’t help those expectations. When the statistics of India’s bowling at death was compared to South Africa’s, Dhoni was quick to bring up Indian conditions and the fact that they had good stats when they did play in England. Before leaving, Dhoni made it a point to emphasise that the new players should be allowed to develop in their own right, and not be compared to the Tendulkars and Dravids. “If possible, we will omit the No. 4 position,” Dhoni joked. “One, two, three, five six, seven and then we’ll play till 12. But again, it’s not about one individual. Whoever bats at that slot, it is not pressure on that individual saying he is replacing Sachin Tendulkar. There is no replacing anyone. He brings his own character into the side.”Whoever is going to bat at No. 4, as of now, we have not decided. There is hardly any break for us to decide who will bat at No. 4. But again, every slot, especially when talking about Test cricket, it’s an important slot. The top two, No. 3, No. 4, they have their own importance. It’s a set-up that’s given by them that really helps the team, score big runs and put a big total on board and give bowlers that extra help so that they can afford to try out a few things that need to be tried. Overall, we don’t know who will be batting at No. 4 but there is no replacing the individual.”

Clarke wards off Edgbaston ghosts

Ricky Ponting never bowl first in a Test again after Edgbaston 2005 and Michael Clarke knew it was a gamble when he did it Melbourne, but was able to relax after Australia’s big victory

Daniel Brettig at the MCG29-Dec-20130:00

Michsel Clarke lauds ‘a very special win’

Eleven times Steve Waugh sent the opposition in to bat in Tests, and 11 times he won. Ricky Ponting won at his first attempt at the trick in Christchurch in 2005, then lost catastrophically when doing the same at Edgbaston in that year’s Ashes series. He never dared to do so again, even on pitches as green as Sydney and Headingley against Pakistan in 2010.Having observed the contrasting fates of his predecessors, Michael Clarke has tried to forge a path between these two extremes. The Boxing Day Ashes Test was his fourth insertion of his opponents, all occasions arriving at home. His only loss was to New Zealand on a verdant Bellerive strip in 2011, the rare pitch on which bowling is more a necessity than an option.More open to debate was his decision in Melbourne this week, on a drop-in pitch known for improving as the game progresses but also in circumstances where three previous wins at the toss had allowed Clarke to bat and drive the game from day one. There were times throughout the Boxing Day match that Australia flirted with a result of that kind that so haunted Ponting. But a stirring counter-attack, aided by the dreadfully fragile disposition of England’s increasingly bereft tour party, allowed Clarke to escape the question of “what if”. He was able to say after an eight-wicket victory that his decision was tailored to the team he has now, not those of Waugh, Ponting, Mark Taylor or Allan Border.”If you bowl first you’re always judged on your results, so the ups and downs throughout the Test match are irrelevant as a captain in that case,” Clarke said. “It’s more if you win the Test as a captain you get away with it, if you lose the Test you’re going to be hit hard and you’re accountable for making that decision.”But I believe our team aren’t the team of the 80s or the 90s. For our team I thought conditions were conducive enough to bowl first, our bowlers have been doing a fantastic job not just in this series but also against England in England. I was confident with the overcast conditions we were confident we were going to be able to bowl England out for a low score.”Michael Clarke’s decision at the toss was a talking point throughout the match•Getty Images

Confident maybe, but Clarke was far from adamant about bowling first. When he was departing the dressing room on the first morning to toss the coin he left Ryan Harris with the distinct impression he intended to bat once more. When he delivered his verdict to Mark Nicholas for television a few minutes later, he uttered the words “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but…”Between those two conversations, Clarke and the coach Darren Lehmann engaged in discussions in the middle of the ground. As the bowlers marked their run-ups, a final perusal of the pitch appeared to change their minds. It cannot be known whether Clarke changed his view or was cajoled into doing so by Lehmann. Either way, Lehmann admitted it had been a decision made with some trepidation.”It was the right decision. I would have bowled. And we made it quite late. We were marking out some of the run-ups for the bowlers and we just had a gut feel. The skipper decided to go that way and we fully support that,” he said. “We don’t like doing it. We’d like to bat first every time. I thought there was enough in the wicket.”I don’t think we bowled as well as we should’ve in the first innings either and we bowled England out for 255. Overcast conditions and it had a green tinge on it, I think it was the right call. You’re judged by the result, but if we lost the game I’d still say the same thing.”Clarke admitted to some worry on the first day when his bowlers did not extract the sort of life he had hoped for. What happened instead was that a slow surface gained a little in pace and hardness across the four days, making strokeplay less challenging in the second innings. England’s disintegration had very little to do with the turf, while Chris Rogers and Shane Watson played freely on the final afternoon.”Was it the right decision or not?” Clarke wondered. “The result will say yes, but after the first five overs on day one, the wicket certainly played better than I expected it to. So I don’t think it mattered too much whether I batted first or bowled first.”Having escaped a tight spot in Melbourne, Clarke will feel free to make the call again. He will not be haunted.

TIME-BASE

1ª rodada: Bahia x Corinthians – 28/4 – 16h – Arena Fonte Nova

Lucky to have a world-class bowling line-up – McCullum

Brendon McCullum believes that New Zealand are developing a world-class outfit of bowlers in which to utilise over the next few years as they aim to improve over their current No. 8 Test ranking

Trent Boult has formed a valuable pairing with Tim Southee for New Zealand of late•AFP

Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand Test captain, believes New Zealand are building a world-class bowling attack and feels lucky to have that firepower at his disposal as he aims to captain the team to their first series victory over a top-eight Test nation in eight years.During the last 12 months, Tim Southee and Trent Boult – a pairing that first operated together during New Zealand’s victory over Australia in Hobart – have formed a strong new-ball attack supplemented mainly by Neil Wagner’s hit-the-deck approach as the third seamer although Doug Bracewell has also floated around the scene. The spin department has been more fluid as New Zealand try to find a substitute for Daniel Vettori, and after brief stints with Todd Astle, Jeetan Patel and Bruce Martin, New Zealand appear to have settled on legspinner Ish Sodhi, who is raw but gifted. The emergence of Corey Anderson as an allrounder at No. 6 has helped give McCullum the leeway to embrace Sodhi and also use his main two quicks as attacking options. The bowlers have also enjoyed feeding off the pressure built by large first-innings totals; in four out of the five home Tests so far this season New Zealand have posted over 400.”In the last few Tests at home the blueprint we’ve played to has been good,” McCullum said. “We’ve been able to get plenty of runs, which has been great for our bowlers because I think we do have potentially a world-class bowling line-up.”Southee and Boult have dovetailed with each other during the year. Boult had his day to remember at the Basin Reserve last week with a haul of 10 for 80 while in May, albeit in defeat but not through the fault of the bowlers, Southee took 10* in the match against England at Lord’s.”Consistency is what we’re always after and if we look at our bowlers over the last 12 months those guys have been very consistent and turned in excellent performances,” McCullum said. “Trent got the rewards in the last game and Tim got the rewards at Lord’s, but throughout the year, even in trying conditions, those guys continue to run in and present us with good opportunities.””It’s a lucky situation for me as captain and our batting group is we’ve got bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets, even on surfaces which don’t necessarily suit them at times. I can’t talk highly enough of those guys and I know they’re determined to back that up and make sure we get a series win.”It is still early in New Zealand’s international season. After this Test in Hamilton there is a five-match one-day series followed by two Twenty20s before the visit of India and their strong batting line-up. Although Boult is not a regular in one-day cricket (that may soon change), Southee is part of all formats for New Zealand so can expect a hefty workload in the weeks ahead. The immediate priority, however, is to not let this chance of a series victory slip away. New Zealand are not ranked at No. 8 in Test cricket without reason; they do not win many matches, although their recent home form has been far better than their current rating. The pitch, the first Test surface prepared by groundsman, Andy Brown, who has taken on the main role at Seddon Park after being the long-time No. 2, did not have same strong tinge of green as the previous two in the series, but McCullum thought there was still enough life in the grass to make the first day interesting. He also said overhead conditions can play as much as a part as what’s under foot, so he’ll be looking up as well as down should he win the toss.”As the boys have alluded to I’m not winning too many tosses at the moment and probably not expecting to win it tomorrow either. Last year, the wickets didn’t tend to start to turn later so bowling first was a pretty calculated decision because we knew it wasn’t going to break up. This year it seems to be a dollar each way.”The important thing in Hamilton is the overhead conditions and the mugginess which is around. If there is some cloud cover then the ball can swing quite a lot. We’ve seen in previous Tests here that a lot of wickets can fall in one session. We’ve got be mindful of that with bat and ball.”After all the effort they have put in to finally register a win at home, and be in the position to take a series, it is that prospect of one crazy session – however unlikely it seems – undoing the good work, that is a valuable warning for New Zealand to heed.*10.20amGMT, December 18: Southee’s haul at Lord’s was amended
