Adverse venue awaits shaky hosts

If there is a home venue Sri Lanka would prefer not to head to after a loss, it would be the P Sara Oval in Colombo. On each of the last three occasions Sri Lanka have played here, they have lost. And unlike those times, they trail Pakistan 0-1 now

Big PictureIf there is a home venue Sri Lanka would prefer not to head to after a loss, it would be the P Sara Oval in Colombo. There is typically extra bounce on the surface, and a little help for seamers. On each of the last three occasions Sri Lanka have played here, they have lost. The only difference is that in those series, they had arrived with a 1-0 lead, secured in Galle.Sri Lanka’s Galle tormentor Yasir Shah may not be a menace until later in the match, but the prospect of Wahab Riaz hurling balls at helmets on the most reliable result pitch in South Asia is thrilling for all but the hosts’ batsmen. Suranga Lakmal may generate seam and carry here for Sri Lanka too, but the variety of Pakistan’s attack gives them an edge. In mitigation, Sri Lanka possess the most successful batsman at P Sara: Kumar Sangakkara has 821 runs here, at an average of 54.73.For so long Pakistan had outgunned Sri Lanka only in the bowling, but at present, the batting orders seem almost even. Pakistan are famously brittle – maybe less so in the past year – but since Mahela Jayawardene’s retirement, Sri Lanka have been soft too. Sarfraz Ahmed’s sublime form in the lower-middle order will have Pakistan in good spirits, while Angelo Mathews’ descent from the peaks he scaled in 2014 might concern Sri Lanka. In Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, Sri Lanka have two outstanding players of pace who have hurt Pakistan in combination before. Their challenge will be to rediscover that capacity despite the myriad disappointments of 2015 so far.Aside from possibly playing an extra seamer in place of Zulfiqar Babar if the pitch calls for a pace-heavy attack, Pakistan are simply seeking more of the same. At times it has seemed inconceivable they could produce two similar performances on the trot. Under their winning-est Test captain however, they are skirting consistency.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)

Sri Lanka: LLLWW
Pakistan: WWDLDIn the spotlightDimuth Karunaratne, who swishes his bat like a rapier in the first innings, has built up a small store of second-innings scores to suggest he is a more substantial batsman than his record so far suggests. Paired with Kaushal Silva’s dour defence, Karunaratne is expected to keep the scoreboard moving. Yet his best innings at the top level have come when he is attempting to save a Test. His coaches will no doubt have noted this. Maybe he will continue to trade in a little flair for a few more runs.Junaid Khan was the only weak link Pakistan had in Galle. He might have bowled some good overs in patches but overall looked ineffective. Since his rehabilitation from injury after the World Cup, he has reduced his pace and struggled to generate seam movement. He may or may not be dropped for the second Test but is surely under immense pressure to contribute. “We still have confidence in him. We will see if there is any need of a change but it will mainly be based on a tactical move,” Misbah-ul-Haq said.Teams newsDhammika Prasad suffered a blow to his right thumb in training, which puts him in doubt for the match. Lakmal appears to have adequately recovered from a groin strain, however. Dilruwan Perera, who needed nine stitches after ripping the webbing of his left hand, will not be considered for this match, which presents an opportunity for either spinner Tharindu Kaushal or seamer Dushmantha Chameera, depending on how pace-heavy the attack needs to be. Kithuruwan Vithanage’s hold on the No. 7 spot is also shaky.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Kaushal Silva, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 7 Kusal Perera, 8 Dhammika Prasad/Nuwan Pradeep, 9 Tharindu Kaushal, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Suranga LakmalThe only bad news for Pakistan is that middle-order batsman Haris Sohail will proceed back to Lahore after having injured his patella tendon during a fielding drill in Galle. The rest of the squad looked fit.Pakistan (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shahzad, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt.), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Yasir Shah, 10 Zulfiqar Babar, 11 Junaid Khan/Imran KhanPitch and conditionsA day out from the Test, the pitch appeared to have a smidgen of live grass, which suggests the seamers will enjoy it as usual. There is rain forecast for most afternoons, but the past few Colombo days have been bright and sunny.Stats and trivia The P Sara Oval is the most reliable result venue in South Asia over the past 20 years. Each of the last eight Tests at the venue led to results, and only one of the past 12 matches has ended in a draw Mohammad Hafeez needs 80 to reach 3000 career runs This is most likely Kumar Sangakkara’s last Test against his favourite top-eight opponent. He averages 77.75 against Pakistan

Kent lifted themselves off the bottom of the County Championship by completing their second victory of the season by beating Leicestershire by eight wickets at Grace Road.Despite heavy overnight rain, play resumed on time with Leicestershire on 110 for 9, only 59 ahead, and Ben Raine and Charlie Shreck took the score on to 123 before Shreck was bowled by Matt Coles, the seamer’s fourth wicket of the innings to go with the six he took in Leicestershire’s first innings. Coles’ match figures of 10 for 94 were his best in first class cricket. Allrounder Raine finished on 41 not out.Needing just 73 to win on what was still a difficult pitch on which to bat, the Kent batsmen adopted an aggressive approach, and while it paid off for Joe Denly, it did cause the demise of Daniel Bell-Drummond, caught by Angus Robson at first slip off the bowling of Raine for 5, and Rob Key, who lofted Raine straight to Ned Eckersley at mid-on for 4.But Denly prospered hitting 37 off 48 balls, and in company with skipper Sam Northeast, who hit 28 off 25 balls, saw the visitors home shortly after lunch.Captain Sam Northeast praised his three seam bowlers after Kent completed their second victory of the season and lifted themselves off the bottom of the county championship. “Matt Coles, Calum Haggett and Darren Stevens really stuck to their task well after we lost Ivan Thomas [to a side strain] almost at the start of the game, and to bowl Leicestershire out twice and set up the game in the way we did was pleasing,” Northeast said. But he was not impressed with the Grace Road pitch, which was very green and offered the bowlers assistance throughout. “We have to take it as it comes, but we seem to be going from place to place and playing on this type of ‘result’ wicket and I don’t think it’s great for cricket in general, and producing England players and good cricket.”We’ve taken away the points, so people will probably say ‘just be happy’ but I think someone higher up than myself probably needs to look at what is happening at the moment with Division Two wickets.”

Centuries by Suryakumar Yadav and Aditya Tare helped Mumbai set Madhya Pradesh a mammoth target of 571 on day four in Cuttack.Tare, who sat out the last match with a finger injury, celebrated his return with a 199-ball 109 with the help of 16 fours and one six. Suryakumar took the same number of balls to make his 115 that comprised of 20 fours and one six. The pair added a steady 217-run stand for Mumbai’s fifth wicket. After both batsmen fell in quick succession, Abhishek Nayar drove Mumbai to set MP a target of 571 – the highest in a Ranji Trophy semi-final since Karnataka set Uttar Pradesh a 615-run final innings target in 2009-10 – with an unbeaten 73. Shreyas Iyer also chipped in with a brisk half-century, during which he became fifth player to score 1200 or more runs in a Ranji Trophy season. In response, MP lost Jalaj Saxena and the in-form Rajat Patidar cheaply. Aditya Shrivastava, however, steadied MP with a patient half-century that took them to 99 for 2 at stumps.

West Indies Women put in a dominant performance to hand Bangladesh Women a 49-run loss in Chennai, thereby knocking them out of the Women’s World T20.Stafanie Taylor, Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin starred with both bat and ball to lead a strong all-round effort from West Indies, who notched their second win in as many games to move to the top of the Group B table.Bangladesh, by contrast, slumped to a third heavy defeat in the tournament. After electing to bat, West Indies laid a solid platform with openers Matthews and Taylor putting on a stand of 67 in 70 balls, before Matthews was stumped off Nahida Akter. Akter struck twice more in her next two overs, dismissing Britney Cooper and the set Taylor to leave West Indies at 98 for 3 in 15.1 overs. But West Indies finished the innings strongly as Dottin and Stacy-Ann King chipped in with cameos. This ensured that 50 runs were plundered in the last 4.5 overs, lifting West Indies to 148.After a solid opening stand of 24, Bangladesh’s run chase was hampered by the regular fall of wickets. Taylor, Matthews and Dottin were the standout bowlers, taking 7 for 46 in 11 overs between them. Two run-outs did not help Bangladesh’s cause either. The result puts West Indies in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals, while Bangladesh will look to put in a better performance in their last group match against Pakistan.
