Aston Villa Eyeing Move For £235k-A-Week Superstar

Aston Villa are still showing an interest in signing Atletico Madrid superstar Joao Felix during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

What is Joao Felix's contract and salary?

The £235,000-a-week Portuguese arguably hasn't yet hit the heights many predicted of him a few years ago, having won the prestigious European Golden Boy award back in 2019.

Felix made the move to Chelsea on loan back in January, having struggled to consistently make an impact at Atletico, but his time at Stamford Bridge was largely underwhelming. Granted, he was playing for an out-of-sorts team were low on both quality and confidence, but a tally of four goals in 16 Premier League appearances was still a forgettable return.

It doesn't look as though the Blues will take up the offer of signing the 23-year-old permanently this summer, so instead, he will return to Atletico but looks likely to depart again and perhaps permanently this time, despite his contract not expiring until 2027.

Villa have been linked with a move for Felix recently, and it looks as though their interest isn't showing any sign of waning.

Joao Felix headers the ball for Chelsea as they face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Will Villa sign Felix?

According to Onda Cero [via Sport Witness], both the Villans and Tottenham "could be interested" in snapping up the Portugal international this summer, with Atletico set to deem him surplus to requirements.

There is a possible issue surrounding a move for Felix, however, with the report stating that the youngster "only wants teams qualified in the Champions League".

Felix is undoubtedly a huge talent, having been hailed as "special" by Alvaro Morata and "complete" by Diego Simeone in the past, so the thought of Villa signing him is a mouthwatering one.

He possesses genuine star talent and he could thrive by being the main man at Villa Park, raising the level of those around him and spearheading their charge in Europe next season. There are question marks surrounding him, given the manner in which he has struggled to reach expectations levels, but at 23, he is still so young and could be a superstar addition for years to come.

That being said, it does feel unlikely that Villa, or Spurs for that matter, will be able to entice him to the club, considering he seemingly only has eyes on playing Champions League football. The lure of playing under the much-revered Unai Emery could be the one thing given them a chance of signing him, though.

'New ICC regime trying to sideline BCCI' – Thakur

BCCI president Anurag Thakur has said the board is being “arm-twisted” on two fronts: as a result of the Lodha committee’s recommendations for structural reform, and due to the change at the top of the ICC, where Shashank Manohar has taken charge as the independent chairman. Thakur also took exception to Manohar’s remarks that his priorities lay with the ICC and not the BCCI. Manohar had suggested that it wasn’t his responsibility but that of the BCCI representative to look after the board’s interest at the ICC table.”I think these [Lodha] recommendations and [the] change in ICC [regime] are arm-twisting BCCI both at home and at the ICC which is not good for Indian cricket,” Thakur said. “The situation of BCCI – a global leader till the recommendation of the Lodha committee… now with the new ICC regime they are trying to sideline the BCCI, one of the most important stakeholders in global cricket today. Just [because of] one recommendation, we are not taken seriously.”Thakur, who is in Greater Noida to watch the final of the Duleep Trophy, told reporters that the BCCI, by virtue of being a “global leader”, had an obligation to look after the interest of smaller boards. He reiterated the BCCI’s concerns over the budget for next year’s Champions Trophy in England, which the Indian board felt was three times as much as what was allotted to India for the World T20 earlier this year.”Yes, BCCI should look after its interests, but BCCI does not only limit itself to look after BCCI’s interests,” Thakur said. “If he [Manohar] is saying that he has got nothing to do with the BCCI, BCCI is one of the 105 members and one of the most important stakeholders of the ICC today. And, that is why we have raised the issue – when the others kept mum – that we want to go through the Champions Trophy budget.”Compare the World [T20] Cup with the Champions Trophy – we had 56 matches, Champions Trophy has close to 15 matches; we had eight venues, they had only three venues; it was a 49-day event and the Champions Trophy is only a 20-day event. So the per-match cost is three times higher. Every single penny saved is every single penny earned, not only for BCCI but for 105 countries.”When you talk about the two-tier Test system, BCCI could have got benefits by joining hands with those associations like Australia and England, but we stood by countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and to an extent like West Indies.”Thakur questioned Manohar’s motives for amending the ICC constitution, which played a part in his being elected unopposed as the first independent chairman of the world body. He contended that Manohar hadn’t taken all members into confidence before the amendments were made.”Mr Shashank Manohar was on the board to make certain changes, amendments. As the president of the board he should have taken into confidence all the BCCI members which he did not,” he said. “The amendments were made and he became the independent chairman. Once he has become the independent chairman, he left the BCCI when BCCI needed him the most.”

Ashwin seals India's first innings win in WI

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
An Ashwin-inspired India ran through West Indies after lunch on day four to bring up their biggest Test win outside Asia•AFP

It took more than four sessions coming, but once R Ashwin found his rhythm he ran through the West Indian line-up to seal India’s first innings win in the Caribbean, and their biggest one outside Asia. After lunch on day four, with India needing eight wickets to finish the match, Ashwin found dip and drift. Simultaneously, he cut out the loose balls to earn a five-for and a hundred in the same Test for a second time, the most by an Indian. West Indies couldn’t offer much resistance and folded in 78 overs. They had lasted only 12.2 overs longer in the first innings. Before Ashwin struck, Marlon Samuels and Rajendra Chandrika had managed to hold India up for 22 overs, which did frustrate India a little. Especially after an umpiring decision got India’s goat. After Umesh Yadav had removed Darren Bravo in the first over of the morning – a repeat feeble push to a wide delivery from the first innings – Mohammed Shami, in his first over of the morning, hit Samuels’ glove and offered a low chance to Wriddhiman Saha’s left. The wicketkeeper claimed immediately.Coach Anil Kumble, watching from the balcony, lifted his finger after the first replay. However, the replays – understandably not adequate in terms of angles or quality for financial reasons – didn’t return a verdict beyond reasonable doubt, nor was there a soft signal made by the on-field umpires. So the benefit of that doubt went to Samuels. His bat obscured the front-on replay somewhat, and there was nothing else to go by. The third umpire erred on the side of caution.Virat Kohli wasn’t amused. He was seen having an animated conversation with Ian Gould, who had irritated the Indian captain on day two as well. Kohli was trying to get in an extra over before stumps, but Gould, conversing on a walkie-talkie, had denied them.In a glimpse of what makes him a frustrating batsman to watch in Tests – a superb stroke-maker with an average under 35 – Samuels drove and cut gorgeously to take 23 off the 19 balls after his reprieve. Rain arrived, 40 minutes before lunch, and several players walked straight to a laptop and sat around it, perhaps watching the replays and wondering how Samuels had survived.India lost 15 minutes because of the rain. When an early lunch was taken, Ashwin had only bowled 22 overs in the match. He had offered too many balls to cut and was the only wicketless Indian bowler at the time. On a pitch that didn’t assist spin, and against batsmen who were happy to sit back, he was made to work hard.Ashwin’s rhythm, however, returned immediately after the break. He beat Samuels in flight, with the ball dipping and hitting him on the pad. The next ball didn’t turn as much, and took a soft outside edge for two runs. That was followed by another probing over, replete with a leading edge. You could sense Ashwin was building up to something. He had Chandrika believing he was driving at a half-volley, but the dip created distance, and Saha juggled a low catch off the batsman’s pad. Replays weren’t conclusive vis-à-vis the inside edge, but Chandrika didn’t protest at all. Next up was Jermaine Blackwood, for a pair. Once again, Ashwin created the distance with drift and dip, and the offbreak was driven to short midwicket.Samuels became the victim of drift. As it is, he likes staying beside the line, but this one from Ashwin drifted away, and then didn’t turn as much as he expected, hitting the top of off stump. The ball kept dipping on the inexperienced batsmen, who were arguably facing this quality of spin bowling for the first time, and debutant Roston Chase soon fell to forward short leg because his intended block didn’t reach the pitch of the ball.Amit Mishra broke the Ashwin streak with a topspinner that trapped Shane Dowrich, but Ashwin finished his first five-for outside Asia with another beauty. Jason Holder thought he could drive at a seemingly full offbreak, but the ball drifted away to create the bat-pad gap, and turned through it to hit the leg stump. Ashwin had taken five wickets in 51 balls.A win seemed only a matter of time but India got fancy with bowling changes, and Carlos Brathwaite and Devendra Bishoo made them wait 24.1 overs for their ninth wicket. After West Indies forced the match past the tea break, Ashwin came back to end it with the wickets of Bishoo and Shannon Gabriel in one over.

Wolves Keen On "All-Action" £40k p/w Midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers target Ibrahim Sangare 'would thrive' in the Premier League if Julen Lopetegui was to bring him to Molineux this summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

What's the latest transfer news involving Ibrahim Sangare?

As per 90min, Wolves were among a host of Premier League teams to send scouts to watch PSV take on Ajax in the Eredivisie earlier this month.

Both Ajax defender Jurrien Timber and PSV midfielder Sangare were put under the microscope during the affair, with the latter said to have a €37 million (£32.5 million) release clause inserted into his current contract at The Philips Stadion.

As per Football Insider, Liverpool are also keen on Sangare this summer but suggest that a fee of £45 million may be enough to lure him away from his current employers.

The Reds alongside West Ham were both admirers of him last year, though no move materialised and he instead stayed put and has since gone on to be a key part of Ruud Van Nistelrooy's side.

Capology understands Sangare pockets around €46,154 (£40k) per week at PSV on a deal that runs until June 2027.

Wolves face uncertainty over the future of midfield pairing Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes heading into the off-season, with both being linked with moves to Manchester United and Liverpool, respectively.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist O'Rourke is of the opinion that bringing in Sangare would be a coup at Molineux.

Jones told FFC: "I think he'd be a good signing for Wolves or anybody else in the Premier League because I think he's your modern-day all-action midfielder and definitely somebody who I think could thrive in the Premier League."

Would Ibrahim Sangare be a good signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Sangare possesses the ability to make a significant impact in both boxes and could be a very smart signing by Wolves boss Lopetegui in the summer transfer window.

In 2022/23, the 25-year-old enforcer has made 41 appearances in all competitions for PSV, registering seven goals and three assists, as per Transfermarkt.

The Ivorian has also managed to make around 2.5 successful challenges per game this term, showing his tenacity in being able to turn over possession, according to WhoScored.

Furthermore, as per the same outlet, Sangare managed to maintain an average rating of 7.11/10 in the Dutch top-flight this campaign, demonstrating how consistent his performances have been for PSV.

If both Neves and Nunes are to walk through the Molineux exit doors in the next few months, Sangare could be a brilliant replacement to freshen up the engine room and provide some new impetus in midfield for Wolves heading into 2023/24.

"Incredible" £32k-p/w Arsenal Ace Set To Leave This Summer

Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is heading for the exit door this summer, as he has no intention of signing a new contract with the club, according to a recent report from L'Equipe.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

Mikel Arteta already has the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah to choose from in attack, with Balogun currently on loan at Reims, however Football Insider report the manager wants to bring in a new striker in the summer transfer window.

Arteta is aiming to bring in a player who is completely different to the options he already has, urging the club to bring in someone who is powerful and physically-gifted, to give his side more balance going forward.

With those parameters in mind, the manager has set his sights on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dusan Vlahovic, with the latter set to be made the Gunners' priority target, although it would take a huge fee to convince Juventus to sell the Serbian.

If a new attacker is brought in, there will be stiff competition for the starting spot up front, particularly because Arsenal almost exclusively utilise a formation with a lone striker, and they may need to let some players go this summer.

According to a report from L'Equipe (via Sport Witness), Balogun's departure is becoming inevitable this summer, as he has no intention of extending his current contract without guaranteed game time.

As such, the Gunners are hoping to sell the forward for at least €30m (£27m) in the upcoming window, with Marseille becoming the latest club to join the race for his signature, amid links to Everton, Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Should Arsenal sell Folarin Balogun?

The 21-year-old has been enjoying a fantastic loan spell with Reims, having scored 18 goals in Ligue 1, a figure that places him right near the top of the goal-scoring charts.

Arteta has clearly been impressed with the £32k-per-week starlet's performances, describing him as "incredible" back in February, which indicates the Spaniard would be keen to keep him at the Emirates Stadium.

Stade de Reims' Folarin Balogun in action with Paris St Germain's Fabian Ruiz and Sergio Ramos

However, it is probably not feasible to keep the New York City-born marksman, as there will be so much competition in his position next season, particularly if either Vlahovic or Calvert-Lewin is signed.

It would also be unwise to drop Gabriel Jesus, given the number of goals and assists he has provided in the Premier League this season, therefore Arsenal should cash-in on Balogun, and invest the money into other areas of the squad.

Wolves Want To Sign Versatile Midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers have voiced their interest in signing FC Lorient midfielder Enzo Le Fee, 90min report.

What’s the latest Wolves transfer news on Le Fee?

Le Fee is 23 years of age and has progressed through Lorient’s academy, becoming a first-team regular, making 135 senior appearances for the club. The majority of his appearances have come as an attacking or central midfielder, although Le Fee can also turn out as a left or right midfielder if required.

He appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high €15m Transfermarkt valuation and is under contract with Lorient until 2024. However, an exit looks like it could be on the cards this summer, with the player recently confirming he won’t be extending his contract. Le Fee admitted he hopes to leave Lorient this summer to bring in a transfer fee for the Ligue 1 side, and it appears as if Molineux could be a possible destination.

90min reporters Graeme Bailey and Tom Gott shared a story in the last 48 hours regarding Le Fee, claiming that Wolves have voiced their interest over a potential transfer.

However, Julen Lopetegui’s side aren’t alone in the pursuit of the midfielder, with Premier League rivals Fulham, Leicester City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham also thought to be keen.

Would Le Fee be a good signing?

Le Fee appears to be going from strength to strength in his native country and has produced a career-best tally when it comes to goals and assists this season.

As mentioned, he has made the majority of his appearances as an attacking midfielder, something Lopetegui doesn’t have in the Midlands. Matheus Nunes, Joao Gomes and Joao Moutinho are the club’s central midfield options, with the latter of the three out of contract in the summer.

Ruben Neves, Mario Lemina, Boubacar Traore and Joe Hodge are primarily holding midfielders, so you could argue that a player like Le Fee, dubbed ‘incredible’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig earlier this season, may prove to be a shrewd addition.

You’d expect that Wolves will need to remain in the top flight to stand any chance of securing the midfielder’s services, and even if they do just that, there could be plenty of interest from Premier League rivals.

It could be one to keep an eye on, though, although Wolves may also need to prioritise a marquee attacking addition after scoring just 22 times in 28 Premier League fixtures.

Michael Carrick has the West Ham board’s attention

Insider ExWHUemployee has revealed that Michael Carrick has earned the attention of the West Ham United board amid uncertainty over David Moyes.

What’s the latest on Michael Carrick and West Ham?

In the press recently, the current Middlesbrough manager has been named a possible future Hammers boss should the club opt to sack the current man in charge.

And while some reports suggest that Moyes won't be sacked any time soon – with TalkSPORT host Jim White even claiming that he'll remain if the club get relegated – it doesn't exactly feel as though the club are heading in the right direction.

After all, the club have won just six times out of 26 Premier League games this season and consequently sit 17th in the division with only goal difference keeping them above the relegation zone.

With that in mind, the West Ham board will likely be considering a new manager and amid the rumours about Carrick, Ex has confirmed that he is a genuine target.

When talking on The West Ham Way podcast, he said: "They are interested in Michael Carrick. He is someone that has got attention from the board.

"They're impressed with his new philosophies; the success he's had at Middlesbrough – I think he's won 16 out of 20 games; the fact that he has got all the experience of working under various Manchester United managers as an assistant and obviously as a player.

"And obviously he is an ex-West Ham player who stuck with us for a year in the Championship when we did get relegated. So he stuck with us through hard times, but then obviously went on and had very successful times beyond West Ham – well, he had them at West Ham when we finished fifth, but beyond West Ham as well.

"So I think he's someone that would be interested."

Why would West Ham want Carrick as manager?

As a player, Carrick played 154 times for the senior West Ham team – only making more appearances for Man Utd – while also winning numerous major honours (albeit with the Red Devils and not as an Iron).

What's more, while still early on in his managerial career, he looks to have all the makings of a top coach. Indeed, he currently has Middlesbrough third in the Championship and pushing for promotion.

With that in mind, if West Ham were to be relegated, Carrick could come in to replace Moyes with immediate knowledge of how to fight in the second division for a spot back up in the Premier League.

This rumour certainly looks like it could have legs.

Nottingham Forest interested in Ezzalzouli

Nottingham Forest are among the main contenders to sign Barcelona winger Abde Ezzalzouli this summer, according to reports from Spain.

The Lowdown: Cooper planning rebuild?

Forest are still well on course to remain in the Premier League this season, currently sitting four points clear of the relegation zone, however the 4-0 defeat at West Ham United last weekend may have flagged up some concerns for manager Steve Cooper.

The Tricky Trees are known to be interested in a new defender, being linked to Odilon Kossounou and Cesar Montes in recent days, and they are now said to be considering new attacking options as well.

The Latest: Ezzalzouli eyed

According to a report from Sport, Forest are one of the clubs most interested in signing Ezzalzouli this summer, with the player’s future being considered by Barcelona.

The winger is currently on loan at La Liga club Osasuna, however they do not have a purchase option included in the deal, potentially opening the door for a move to the Premier League.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Barcelona manager Xavi, the 21-year-old has weighed in with two goals and two assists in 19 appearances for Osasuna in all competitions this season.

While that may not seem like the best return from the Moroccan, it must be noted that it is his first real season playing consistent first-team football in La Liga, having made sporadic appearances for Barcelona in the 2021-22 campaign.

The starlet’s main strength is undoubtedly his dribbling ability, ranking in the 95th percentile for progressive carries per 90 compared to other wingers in the past year.

Given that he is yet to prove himself over the course of a full season, it is very tricky to predict whether Ezzalzouli would be a successful signing for Nottingham Forest, but it could be a risk worth taking this summer.

Newcastle transfer news: Goncalo Inacio

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Sporting CP central defender Goncalo Inacio this summer.

The Lowdown: Bid rejected

Newcastle reportedly had a bid rejected for Inacio last summer, thought to be worth €33m (£28.1m).

They were told that they had to pay his €45m (£38.4m) release clause in full if they wanted to sign him, but a move never materialised.

The Latest: Interest remains

As per Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manha (via CaughtOffside), Newcastle are still said to be interested in Inacio ahead of this summer.

However, Premier League rivals Liverpool are believed to have sent scouts to watch him in action for Sporting, ahead of a potential move in the next window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Depth needed

The Magpies need to increase their depth at centre-back for next season, especially if they are competing in Europe as well as the domestic competitions.

Eddie Howe currently has four at his disposal in the senior squad, but Jamaal Lascelles is reportedly set to leave this summer, while Dan Burn has mainly been used as a left-back.

Hailed as a ‘sensation’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, 21-year-old Inacio is growing to be one of Europe’s best ball-playing defenders already, ranking in the 99th percentile for shot-creating actions, passes attempted and progressive passes per game outside of Europe’s top five leagues, as well as placing highly among a number of other key metrics over the past year.

The Portuguese maestro would be a welcome addition to the Toon squad, especially if Lascelles leaves.
