Leeds’ "Unbelievable" £6.5k-p/w Target Rejects New Contract

Leeds United target Gustavo Hamer has refused the opportunity to sign a new contract at Coventry City amid interest from Elland Road, according to fresh reports.

Is Gustavo Hamer leaving Coventry?

Since joining from PEC Zwolle back in 2020, Hamer, whose natural role is defensive midfield, has become a regular feature of Mark Robins’ first team having made 42 Championship starts from 46 matches last season, but there’s a strong possibility that he could be on the move during the ongoing window.

The Dutchman’s contract is set to expire in less than a year meaning that his side are now presented with their final opportunity to cash in for a decent fee, and should he depart, he won’t be short of potential suitors having established himself as their second best-performing player during the previous campaign with a WhoScored match rating of 7.26.

Back in May 2022, Sussex Live claimed that the Whites were keeping tabs on the 26-year-old so the hierarchy are clearly long-term admirers, and Football League World more recently suggested that Daniel Farke and the 49ers are preparing an ambitious raid this summer.

Speaking during a recent interview, Robins was asked about the future of his central talisman with regards to him putting pen to paper on fresh terms and hinted that the final decision will ultimately come down to the player. He said: “I have got nothing new to add on that or share with anybody. I think that will become clearer as we move forward, but that’s entirely down to Gus.”

Are Leeds signing Gustavo Hamer?

According to Voetbal Rotterdam (via MOT Leeds News), Coventry have offered Hamer a new contract but he "hasn't signed it" as a result of growing admiration from Leeds.

Fulham and newly-promoted Burnley also hold an "interest" in the midfielder, and the outlet states that the attention from the trio of clubs mentioned above "looks to be stopping" their target from committing his future in the Midlands.

Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

Former Coventry goalkeeper Marko Marosi previously hailed Hamer an “unbelievable” player during his time at the club so the fact that the defensive midfielder is reluctant to extend his stay is a massive boost for Farke, because it shows that he could be tempted by the project at Leeds, albeit Fulham and Burnley are also two very attractive prospects.

The Sky Blues’ £6.5k-per-week earner racked up an impressive 19 goal contributions (ten assists and nine goals) in the second-tier last season, alongside whipping 174 crosses into the box which was higher than any other member of his squad, via FBRef, with this remarkable attacking form seeing him receive nine man-of-the-match awards.

The Whites could be handed a small advantage over the Cottagers and the Clarets in their pursuit of Hamer due to the fact that he shares the same agent, CAA Stellar, as Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Daniel James, so his representative will already have had previous dealings with Leeds chiefs, something which they can use to benefit them once again this time around.

Harry Kane latest: Tottenham dealt big blow after Spurs news

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is "determined to leave" Spurs this summer and his time at the club is "definitely over", according to reports.

Will Kane leave Spurs?

Rewind two years ago, the last time Kane was heavily linked with a move away, and it was Premier League champions Man City who were seriously chasing the Englishman's signature.

However, despite a rumoured "gentleman's agreement" with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, a move did not come to fruition and City instead ended up signing superstar Erling Haaland one year later.

At the time, Tottenham had a lot of leverage in regards to keeping Kane with many years left on his contract, but right now, the 29-year-old is fast entering the final 12 months of his deal.

The Three Lions star could depart north London as a free agent next year, putting a host of clubs on alert, including Bayern Munich, PSG, Man United and Chelsea.

harry-kane-tottenham-hotspur

There is a decision to be made by Spurs if Kane doesn't agree fresh terms, and that is whether to sell for a handsome profit this window or keep him for another season and let him depart for nothing in 2024.

However, as per reports out of Spain, there has been a worrying development on that front as it appears Kane is "determined to leave Tottenham this summer".

That information comes courtesy of Sport, who also believe "everything indicates" his time at the club is "definitely over".

Bayern and PSG are apparently the two sides in pole position to sign Kane, with the former especially pushing given Thomas Tuchel's desire to sign a star striker.

The Bavarians have already seen a verbal offer of around £60 million rejected, and despite Kane's contract situation, it appears Levy is set to dig his heels in.

What's been said about Kane?

The former Leyton Orient loanee is, without question, Spurs' superstar player and losing him would be an almighty blow – no matter the marquee transfer fee.

Kane scored a sensational 30 goals in 38 league appearances last season, and if it wasn't for the ridiculous form of Haaland, he would've clinched another Golden Boot.

Spurs legend Jurgen Klinsmann has also heaped praise on the player for his character and leadership.

"For Tottenham he is very important, he can energise the team, keep the spirit up in the changing rooms," said Klinsmann.

"He never hides away, as you could see in the World Cup when he stepped up on the second penalty [in England's quarter-final defeat to France]. He missed it but he always takes responsibility.

"Always. He has character and dedication to his club."

West Ham Could Sign New Scott Parker In £60m Machine

The saga is finally nearing its closure, much to the bemusement of West Ham supporters.

After endless months of speculation that has seen Declan Rice linked with every top club in the country, it emerged as a straight shootout for his signature between Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, it was confirmed that the Premier League Champions weren’t prepared to enter into any kind of bidding war, which ceded momentum to the high-flying Gunners, who agreed to a £105m move for the Englishman.

This has presented the West Ham hierarchy and David Moyes with a monumental budget to reinvest in the inexplicable gap that the club captain is set to leave.

With this sort of money and the attraction of yet another year of European football, the Irons could tempt a huge pool of irresistibly talented players.

One man who has been tipped to replace and has enjoyed a magnificent season is Joao Palhinha.

What’s the latest on Joao Palhinha to West Ham?

According to TheSecretScout, the Irons have made the Fulham midfielder their “top priority” this summer as talks between the club and the player’s representative have already taken place.

However, a stumbling block remains due to the size of the fee being asked.

It was previously revealed by Football Insider that the Cottagers will only consider his sale for around £60m.

For other clubs, this figure is a startling and unmanageable price tag, but with the East London outfit financed and buoyed with the money acquired from Rice, a deal is definitely possible.

How good is Joao Palhinha?

In his debut season in England, the 27-year-old has forged a tremendous reputation as one of the division’s most influential and commanding forces – a crucial component of a Fulham side that has massively overachieved.

This is reinforced by the fact that the Portuguese made the most tackles (147) in the Premier League, which was comfortably more than second-placed Moises Caicedo (100).

This remarkable statistic means that the former Sporting Lisbon star also ranks impressively across the continent, as he sits in the top 1% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for tackles per 90. But, his status as an authoritative pivot is also cemented by his position within the best 12% for clearances per 90 and aerials won per 90.

With this tough-tackling, physically imperious profile, Palhinha could fill the boots of former Hammer Scott Parker.

Scott Parker West Ham

Across four seasons for the East Londoners, between 2007 and 2011, the former Bournemouth manager made 129 appearances and won Hammer of the Year on two occasions.

During the 2009/10 season, when Parker secured the award on the second occasion, he mirrored the assets that Palhinha has expertly displayed.

Indeed, the 5 foot 9 man recorded similar stats to the Fulham star in the Premier League for tackles per game (3.3 vs 4.2), interceptions per game (2.4 vs 1.3), and clearances (1.4 vs 1.7).

Described as “fantastic” by Gary Neville, Palhinha has already shown he is a commendably reliable player in English football and would be an excellent way to ease the woes surrounding Rice’s exit.

Parnell, Olivier seal innings win for SA

South Africa advanced determinedly towards a 3-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka by taking just 17 overs to dismiss the opposition on the third morning

The Report by Alan Gardner14-Jan-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDuanne Olivier claimed five wickets in the match on debut•Gallo Images

Sixteen wickets, 228 runs, 59.3 overs. South Africa’s pace attack delivered a swift and brutal dismemberment to seal victory at the Wanderers inside three days and confirm a 3-0 sweep in the series. Sri Lanka only managed one half-century in the match – although that was an improvement on the second Test – and could not even last long enough for the possibility of a Johannesburg thunderstorm to provide a stay of execution.Faf du Plessis had hesitated to enforce the follow-on in Cape Town but showed no search mercy as the Bullring bayed for blood. Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander started the job, Wayne Parnell and the debutant Duanne Olivier took sadistic pleasure in twisting the knife. Parnell finished with six wickets in the match and Olivier five, heartening performances for South African cricket after a week spent in the shadow of Kolpak.Having capitulated in the morning session to concede a 295-run deficit, Sri Lanka lost a wicket in the second over of their second attempt and needed Dimuth Karunaratne’s 50, as well as some lost-cause humpty for the eighth wicket, to prevent total humiliation. Karunaratne, having avoided a pair, survived being dropped on 16 to record his highest score of the series but there was little resistance forthcoming from elsewhere.South Africa’s bowlers gave an exhibition in how to hunt tentative prey on a fast pitch but some of the catching was just as spectacular. They saved their best efforts in the field for Sri Lanka’s captain, Angelo Mathews, who was dismissed twice in the day. Quinton de Kock had produced a pearler in the first innings but du Plessis surpassed him with another one-handed effort (without the aid of gloves) at second slip, from a fierce, top-edged hack by Mathews, leaping to take the ball high above his head before landing on his knees and roaring like a gladiator over a vanquished opponent. When Rabada burst through to rattle Karunaratne’s stumps shortly before tea – which was put back to make up for time lost on day two – the end was in sight. Suranga Lakmal proceeded to thrash 31 off 26 during a 43-run frolic with Upul Tharanga to take Sri Lanka past their first-innings 131 but another brilliant running catch from JP Duminy ended the fun as Parnell and Olivier shared the last three wickets without conceding a run to seal a hefty innings win.Rabada had been held back until second change in the first innings but this time du Plessis gave the crowd what they wanted. His opening salvo was a beast of a delivery: Kaushal Silva reacted as if bitten by a cobra but could not remove his glove in time as the ball reared at him from a length.Kusal Mendis almost suffered the same fate to his first ball and also edged short of first slip but Sri Lanka made it to lunch one down. Rabada beat Mendis with the regularity of a sheet-metal worker as the close catchers prowled and supporters on the grass banks hooted encouragement; Mendis responded by shifting his stance on to leg stump and trying to come down the pitch to Philander. It was a high-wire act and, after striking five boundaries, Mendis chopped an inswinging delivery from Parnell into the top of off stump.Parnell ought to have had the wicket of Karunaratne earlier in the over but Dean Elgar could not hold a low edge going two-handed to his right from third slip. The second-wicket stand did yield 37 runs but Sri Lanka were trying to construct a cardboard fort in a howling Highveld gale, as Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal both fell providing catching practice to the slips.During the morning session, South Africa claimed the six wickets they required to make Sri Lanka bat again in just 17 overs. With a lively Wanderers surface at their disposal, Du Plessis judged correctly that his attack had enough left in the tank, having lost some 25 overs on the second evening and with the possibility of rain returning at some point. It had threatened to be a carve up from the moment South Africa had the ball in hand and, without the bad weather to delay them, the bowlers were quickly back into their work. In his second over of the morning, Philander moved the ball seductively away from Chandimal to graze the outside edge and provide a catch for de Kock.Mathews fell to the same manner of dismissal – at least as far as the scorecard was concerned. He had already successfully reviewed Bruce Oxenford’s lbw decision off Philander, saved by a thin inside edge with height also in question, when he fended at a rapid delivery from Rabada that held its line outside off. The edge may have been travelling straight to Hashim Amla at first slip but de Kock got there first, intercepting one-handed at full stretch, a magnificent catch even if it didn’t quite stick cleanly in the glove at the first attempt.Sri Lanka had raised three figures by that point but would not get much further. Olivier claimed his first Test wicket with a venomous bouncer that Rangana Herath could only dolly to square leg via an awkward contortion and a brief flurry of blows from Tharanga could not delay the inevitable.Lakmal chipped Parnell lackadaisically to extra cover and Olivier then achieved some extra bounce from a length to take the shoulder of the bat and extract Tharanga. Nuwan Pradeep was the last to fall, popping a catch back to the bowler; Parnell adjudged to have taken the ball just above the turf after several replays for the third umpire. A few hours later he was celebrating finishing off the Sri Lanka innings for a second time.

Aston Villa Eyeing Move For £235k-A-Week Superstar

Aston Villa are still showing an interest in signing Atletico Madrid superstar Joao Felix during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

What is Joao Felix's contract and salary?

The £235,000-a-week Portuguese arguably hasn't yet hit the heights many predicted of him a few years ago, having won the prestigious European Golden Boy award back in 2019.

Felix made the move to Chelsea on loan back in January, having struggled to consistently make an impact at Atletico, but his time at Stamford Bridge was largely underwhelming. Granted, he was playing for an out-of-sorts team were low on both quality and confidence, but a tally of four goals in 16 Premier League appearances was still a forgettable return.

It doesn't look as though the Blues will take up the offer of signing the 23-year-old permanently this summer, so instead, he will return to Atletico but looks likely to depart again and perhaps permanently this time, despite his contract not expiring until 2027.

Villa have been linked with a move for Felix recently, and it looks as though their interest isn't showing any sign of waning.

Joao Felix headers the ball for Chelsea as they face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Will Villa sign Felix?

According to Onda Cero [via Sport Witness], both the Villans and Tottenham "could be interested" in snapping up the Portugal international this summer, with Atletico set to deem him surplus to requirements.

There is a possible issue surrounding a move for Felix, however, with the report stating that the youngster "only wants teams qualified in the Champions League".

Felix is undoubtedly a huge talent, having been hailed as "special" by Alvaro Morata and "complete" by Diego Simeone in the past, so the thought of Villa signing him is a mouthwatering one.

He possesses genuine star talent and he could thrive by being the main man at Villa Park, raising the level of those around him and spearheading their charge in Europe next season. There are question marks surrounding him, given the manner in which he has struggled to reach expectations levels, but at 23, he is still so young and could be a superstar addition for years to come.

That being said, it does feel unlikely that Villa, or Spurs for that matter, will be able to entice him to the club, considering he seemingly only has eyes on playing Champions League football. The lure of playing under the much-revered Unai Emery could be the one thing given them a chance of signing him, though.

'New ICC regime trying to sideline BCCI' – Thakur

BCCI president Anurag Thakur has said the board is being “arm-twisted” on two fronts: as a result of the Lodha committee’s recommendations for structural reform, and due to the change at the top of the ICC, where Shashank Manohar has taken charge as the independent chairman. Thakur also took exception to Manohar’s remarks that his priorities lay with the ICC and not the BCCI. Manohar had suggested that it wasn’t his responsibility but that of the BCCI representative to look after the board’s interest at the ICC table.”I think these [Lodha] recommendations and [the] change in ICC [regime] are arm-twisting BCCI both at home and at the ICC which is not good for Indian cricket,” Thakur said. “The situation of BCCI – a global leader till the recommendation of the Lodha committee… now with the new ICC regime they are trying to sideline the BCCI, one of the most important stakeholders in global cricket today. Just [because of] one recommendation, we are not taken seriously.”Thakur, who is in Greater Noida to watch the final of the Duleep Trophy, told reporters that the BCCI, by virtue of being a “global leader”, had an obligation to look after the interest of smaller boards. He reiterated the BCCI’s concerns over the budget for next year’s Champions Trophy in England, which the Indian board felt was three times as much as what was allotted to India for the World T20 earlier this year.”Yes, BCCI should look after its interests, but BCCI does not only limit itself to look after BCCI’s interests,” Thakur said. “If he [Manohar] is saying that he has got nothing to do with the BCCI, BCCI is one of the 105 members and one of the most important stakeholders of the ICC today. And, that is why we have raised the issue – when the others kept mum – that we want to go through the Champions Trophy budget.”Compare the World [T20] Cup with the Champions Trophy – we had 56 matches, Champions Trophy has close to 15 matches; we had eight venues, they had only three venues; it was a 49-day event and the Champions Trophy is only a 20-day event. So the per-match cost is three times higher. Every single penny saved is every single penny earned, not only for BCCI but for 105 countries.”When you talk about the two-tier Test system, BCCI could have got benefits by joining hands with those associations like Australia and England, but we stood by countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and to an extent like West Indies.”Thakur questioned Manohar’s motives for amending the ICC constitution, which played a part in his being elected unopposed as the first independent chairman of the world body. He contended that Manohar hadn’t taken all members into confidence before the amendments were made.”Mr Shashank Manohar was on the board to make certain changes, amendments. As the president of the board he should have taken into confidence all the BCCI members which he did not,” he said. “The amendments were made and he became the independent chairman. Once he has become the independent chairman, he left the BCCI when BCCI needed him the most.”

Ashwin seals India's first innings win in WI

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
An Ashwin-inspired India ran through West Indies after lunch on day four to bring up their biggest Test win outside Asia•AFP

It took more than four sessions coming, but once R Ashwin found his rhythm he ran through the West Indian line-up to seal India’s first innings win in the Caribbean, and their biggest one outside Asia. After lunch on day four, with India needing eight wickets to finish the match, Ashwin found dip and drift. Simultaneously, he cut out the loose balls to earn a five-for and a hundred in the same Test for a second time, the most by an Indian. West Indies couldn’t offer much resistance and folded in 78 overs. They had lasted only 12.2 overs longer in the first innings. Before Ashwin struck, Marlon Samuels and Rajendra Chandrika had managed to hold India up for 22 overs, which did frustrate India a little. Especially after an umpiring decision got India’s goat. After Umesh Yadav had removed Darren Bravo in the first over of the morning – a repeat feeble push to a wide delivery from the first innings – Mohammed Shami, in his first over of the morning, hit Samuels’ glove and offered a low chance to Wriddhiman Saha’s left. The wicketkeeper claimed immediately.Coach Anil Kumble, watching from the balcony, lifted his finger after the first replay. However, the replays – understandably not adequate in terms of angles or quality for financial reasons – didn’t return a verdict beyond reasonable doubt, nor was there a soft signal made by the on-field umpires. So the benefit of that doubt went to Samuels. His bat obscured the front-on replay somewhat, and there was nothing else to go by. The third umpire erred on the side of caution.Virat Kohli wasn’t amused. He was seen having an animated conversation with Ian Gould, who had irritated the Indian captain on day two as well. Kohli was trying to get in an extra over before stumps, but Gould, conversing on a walkie-talkie, had denied them.In a glimpse of what makes him a frustrating batsman to watch in Tests – a superb stroke-maker with an average under 35 – Samuels drove and cut gorgeously to take 23 off the 19 balls after his reprieve. Rain arrived, 40 minutes before lunch, and several players walked straight to a laptop and sat around it, perhaps watching the replays and wondering how Samuels had survived.India lost 15 minutes because of the rain. When an early lunch was taken, Ashwin had only bowled 22 overs in the match. He had offered too many balls to cut and was the only wicketless Indian bowler at the time. On a pitch that didn’t assist spin, and against batsmen who were happy to sit back, he was made to work hard.Ashwin’s rhythm, however, returned immediately after the break. He beat Samuels in flight, with the ball dipping and hitting him on the pad. The next ball didn’t turn as much, and took a soft outside edge for two runs. That was followed by another probing over, replete with a leading edge. You could sense Ashwin was building up to something. He had Chandrika believing he was driving at a half-volley, but the dip created distance, and Saha juggled a low catch off the batsman’s pad. Replays weren’t conclusive vis-à-vis the inside edge, but Chandrika didn’t protest at all. Next up was Jermaine Blackwood, for a pair. Once again, Ashwin created the distance with drift and dip, and the offbreak was driven to short midwicket.Samuels became the victim of drift. As it is, he likes staying beside the line, but this one from Ashwin drifted away, and then didn’t turn as much as he expected, hitting the top of off stump. The ball kept dipping on the inexperienced batsmen, who were arguably facing this quality of spin bowling for the first time, and debutant Roston Chase soon fell to forward short leg because his intended block didn’t reach the pitch of the ball.Amit Mishra broke the Ashwin streak with a topspinner that trapped Shane Dowrich, but Ashwin finished his first five-for outside Asia with another beauty. Jason Holder thought he could drive at a seemingly full offbreak, but the ball drifted away to create the bat-pad gap, and turned through it to hit the leg stump. Ashwin had taken five wickets in 51 balls.A win seemed only a matter of time but India got fancy with bowling changes, and Carlos Brathwaite and Devendra Bishoo made them wait 24.1 overs for their ninth wicket. After West Indies forced the match past the tea break, Ashwin came back to end it with the wickets of Bishoo and Shannon Gabriel in one over.
