Alex Hales brings Trent Rockets back from the dead to seal two-wicket heist

Stunning turnaround against Superchargers as Stokes drops a match-turning clanger

Andrew Miller26-Jul-2021Trent Rockets 134 for 8 (Hales 40*) beat Northern Superchargers 132 (Simpson 42, Brook 38, de Lange 3-22, Rashid Khan 3-31) by two wicketsAlex Hales sparked into life in the absolute nick of time, to swipe an extraordinary victory from the jaws of a thumping defeat – and he was gifted the opportunity by a game-turning blunder from his former England team-mate Ben Stokes, as Trent Rockets sealed an incredible two-wicket victory on a pulsating night at Trent Bridge.Chasing a sub-par target of 133, Trent Rockets’ chase had been rocked by back-to-back ducks for Dawid Malan and Joe Root, each of them extracted by their Yorkshire and England team-mate Adil Rashid in a sensational start to his spell, and after slumping to 58 for 6 after 58 balls of their chase, their prospects of a revival at one stage dipped as low as 2%, according to the tournament’s Win Predictor.Rashid Khan began their revival with a typically walloping innings of 25 from 12, but once his cameo fizzled out, Rockets’ hopes rested entirely on their sleeping giant Hales, who had seemed unable to raise his game while the wickets were tumbling around him. Between balls 49 and 73, he faced a mere four deliveries, and had limped along to 16 from 25 by the 77th, until a moment from Stokes that evoked memories of his own game-turning strokes of fortune in the World Cup final two years ago. From his 26th delivery, bowled by Rashid, Hales worked a single to mid-off to give up the strike, only for the delivery to be called dead ball due to an intruder on the field. After a lengthy period of remonstration, the ball was served up again, and Hales climbed into a full-blooded drive down the ground to long-off … where Stokes, right back on the boundary and perhaps mindful of his still-problematic broken finger, spilled the chance clean over the rope for six.Two balls later, Hales carved Rashid through point to ignite his innings in a more conventional fashion, and though Luke Wood was prised out by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the mood among a 11,483-strong crowd had been transformed. Matt Carter, a late inclusion after a Covid outbreak caused Steven Mullaney to miss the match while self-isolating, backed up a fine bowling display with vital boundary-finding levers, before Hales sealed the chase in a riot of late strokeplay, including a vast winning six, high into the stands at square leg, to finish unbeaten on 40 from 34.Slow death in prospect
“What a horrific wicket at Old Trafford,” Stokes had tweeted after Birmingham Phoenix were routed for 87 on a Bunsen on Sunday. By the end of the Superchargers’ Powerplay, his views on this surface would have been similarly unprintable. Trent Bridge was a far cry from the boundary-studded utopia served up for England’s recent Pakistan T20I, and instead, on a dry, unyielding deck, slow and even slower was the primary way to go.Stokes did at least bat first after winning the toss, rightly suspecting that the conditions weren’t going to get any easier in Trent Bridge’s fourth match in three days. And sure enough, between balls 6 and 45, the Rockets attack served up a non-stop diet of slow, mocking, tweakers – invariably biting the overused surface, and demanding a scruffy, workmanlike response from the Superchargers top-order.It wasn’t initially forthcoming. Chris Lynn wasn’t designed to stand on ceremony, and duly carved the second of those spinning deliveries, from the lanky offspinner Carter, straight at Rashid Khan in the covers for 2. Out came Stokes at No. 3, and into the attack – in a pre-Test banter-off – came his England captain Root, an exquisite match-up with shades of Root’s ego-channelling of Chris Gayle in the 2016 World T20 final.Stokes duly spanked Root for a first-ball four through the covers before being beaten off the deck by a snorting offbreak, but he never looked likely to find the right response for the circumstances. Back came Carter and out went Stokes in an ignominious fashion. An attempted reverse hoick could have been a run-out had it not flown away for four overthrows, and after appearing to jar his troublesome finger in the process, he was done in one ball later after slicing a lofted drive to cover.John Simpson top-scored for the visitors•PA Images via Getty ImagesSimpson, Brook find a happy place
Out of adversity came what looking like being a decisive bout of resistance from Superchargers. A flatlining scoreline of 38 for 3 from 34 balls was revived by a fourth-wicket stand of 61 from 40 balls between two men who are living their best lives this summer. Harry Brook was so nearly the hero at Headingley on Saturday, where his 62 from 31 balls turned a lost cause into a classic. This time his 38 from 30 did a similar job in reverse order, giving a turkey of a contest just enough grit to become a thriller. At the other end, John Simpson batted as if he was still wearing that beatific smile he had been sporting up on the Lord’s balcony at the end of the ODI against Pakistan this month, as he drank in the glories of his improbable England call-up.It wasn’t much to be going with, but they gave it a go all the same. Brook took on the wily Rashid from the outset, hauling each of his first two balls for four before Adam Lyth felt the Afghan’s retribution two balls later, and Simpson opted for a similar policy when Rashid returned with 45 balls remaining, hacking three fours in his third five to leave his figures rather dented. Both men kept on swinging to take some much-needed lumps out of Root and Carter too, until Lewis Gregory brought himself on to change up the pace, and Brook was undone by a sliced drive to point.Marchant marches on
On a surface such as this, the very best alternative to raw spin is raw pace. It’s a recipe that Pakistan have perfected down the years, and Marchant de Lange gave a passable impression of Shoaib Akhtar in another ferocious display, not least with the pinpoint accuracy of his yorkers – albeit most of them were bowled as free hits to atone for his frequent habit of over-stepping.But, after shredding Southern Brave with figures of 5 for 20 on Saturday, de Lange extended his lead at the top of the wickets charts with three more for 22, the first two coming in a chaotic meltdown as Superchargers lost four in six balls. After Rashid had got the better of his fellow Afghan Mujeeb, David Willey attempted a first-ball ramp but holed out to Samit Patel, sprinting round from deep third, before Brydon Carse sliced a drive to cover for a first-ball duck.Simpson too would fall to de Lange, with three balls of the innings remaining, but his 42 from 32 seemed to have done the needful.Bragging rights claimed, then lost
And to think it had all seemed so facile for Superchargers. After Mujeeb had outfoxed D’Arcy Short, Adil Rashid romped into action with the poise of a man who knew the games of the men in his sights inside-out. Malan resisted the fast flat legbreak before being suckered by its loopier cousin, before Root – banished from Headingley for this competition due to Stokes’ greater star-power – was served up a moment that may encourage him never to return, as his long-time Yorkshire and England team-mate swallowed a simple return chance after finding a leading edge with a lot of drift and a hint of turn.Samit Patel bashed a big six over long-off before Callum Parkinson found a thin edge to Simpson, whereupon Stokes played himself to perfection, first blasting Tom Moores from the crease with a lifter before intervening in a Rashid-on-Rashid squabble, as Trent Rockets’ Khan crashed Superchargers’ Adil for four, six, four, only to be bounced out one ball later as the skipper bent his back to end the nonsense.Instead, the nonsense was only just beginning.

Cost £0: Rangers hit gold on Ibrox hero who was sold for more than Ferguson

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement would surely love to have someone like Barry Ferguson in his current Light Blues side, especially after their meek display in the first Old Firm match of the campaign.

As so often in the recent matches against Celtic, the Gers have been completely outsmarted in the middle of the pitch, allowing players such as Callum McGregor – who scored in the 3-0 defeat last weekend – plenty of time and space to play to their strengths.

If Clement’s record in the derby wants to improve, getting a grip of the midfield battle is a key priority, otherwise, the Parkhead side will continue to get one up on the Gers.

Calling on someone such as Ferguson, who enjoyed plenty of success against Celtic in his two spells at the club, would certainly make this task much easier.

Clement will have to stick with what he has at his disposal unfortunately, but the Ibrox side did once come out on top more often than their rivals, especially with the Scottish midfielder as the beating heart of the team.

Barry Ferguson’s Rangers statistics

Ferguson made his debut for the Light Blues on the final day of the 1996/97 campaign against Hearts under the late great Walter Smith, before forcing his way into the first team on a regular basis once Dick Advocaat was appointed as manager in 1998.

Ferguson would become the youngest ever player to captain the club aged just 22 under Advocaat, playing a key role as he helped the club dominate in Scotland once again, winning a treble and double in back-to-back seasons.

After a disappointing final 18 months for Advocaat, Alex McLeish was appointed in December 2001, who soon turned out to be the ideal manager for Ferguson.

He scored a stunning freekick against Celtic in the 2002 Scottish Cup final as the Light Blues edged the tie 3-2, further establishing his legacy.

McLeish encouraged Ferguson to get forward more often from the heart of the midfield during the 2002/03 campaign, and he was rewarded with a career high best of 18 goals during the season as the club won another domestic treble.

The captain was their most important player, yet after success on the pitch, that summer became one of frugality, as McLeish had to sell players and bring the wage bill down due to financial issues at the club.

With Ferguson being the most prized asset at Ibrox, it was clear he would have to be sold, despite his willingness to remain at the club under McLeish.

How much Rangers sold Barry Ferguson for

Ferguson was still part of the squad which kicked off the 2003/04 campaign, leading his side to a solid start domestically while also seeing off FC Copenhagen to make the group stages of the Champions League after a three-year absence.

Rangers celebrate

At the end of August, it was announced that Blackburn Rovers had signed the Scot for a fee in the region of £7.5m, bringing him to the Premier League.

Graeme Souness hailed the midfielder, saying: "He is 25, has been captain of Rangers and an international for a number of years, and I see him being an outstanding player for this club.”

Barry Ferguson

If it weren’t for the financial issues at the Glasgow side, Ferguson would likely have stayed. It was one of the largest fees received for a Rangers player, but it wasn't the biggest transfer fee McLeish received during his spell in charge of the Gers.

That belonged to a French defender who he signed prior to the 2004/05 season…

Jean-Alain Boumsong’s Rangers statistics

In December 2003, McLeish announced that the club had secured the services of Boumsong on a pre-contract agreement. Considering Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal were sniffing about the French titan, it was quite a coup.

Jean-Alain Boumsong for Rangers

The centre-back went on to make 26 appearances for the Glasgow side during the first half of the season, impressing with his physical prowess and no-nonsense approach when it came to defending.

It soon became clear that McLeish would be able to make a substantial profit on Boumsong should clubs start showing interest in him, although he didn’t quite expect this to occur after just six months in Scotland.

As the end of 2004 was approaching, McLeish was keen on keeping the French international defender, but it was evident he wanted to leave for a bigger challenge.

How much Rangers sold Boumsong for

Newcastle United were the team who showed the most interest in Boumsong, as Souness – again – was keen on bringing him to the Premier League.

On January 1, 2005, the move was completed, as the former Rangers manager paid a staggering £8m – a lot at the time to sign a player from Scotland – to sign the centre-back.

Jean-Alain Boumsong

Souness was delighted, saying: "Jean-Alain Boumsong has an agreement with us and we have an agreement with Rangers. He is having a medical as we speak. We see him as a big influence at the club both in the short term and long term.”

The fee was £500k more than what Blackburn paid to sign Ferguson, meaning McLeish had raised over £15m in just 18 months by selling two players.

While ultimately, it didn’t quite help their financial issues, securing a profit on both players, especially Boumsong, was certainly commendable.

The Frenchman failed to replicate anything near his best form during his spell with the Magpies, before he spent time at Lyon and Juventus before retiring in 2013 after a spell in Greece.

Phillipe Clement

Selling him was one of the best transfer deals the club have done in its recent history, especially considering the former Auxerre starlet didn’t cost a single penny to sign in the first place.

Clement is clearly trying to build a structure in place which will see talented players move on for serious money, and if he can secure fees such as £8m for various players, it will help the club in the long run.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At the forefront of United’s wishlist is Ait-Nouri, the highly-rated Algerian left-back currently playing for Wolves. Ait-Nouri’s performances have garnered attention from several top clubs, including Chelsea and Liverpool. However, Wolves are reportedly unwilling to part with the defender but their resolve will be tested if a lucrative offer comes along.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell has also emerged as a potential target for United. Despite being an established England international, Chilwell has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge under new manager Enzo Maresca. With Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga excelling in the left-back role, Chelsea may consider parting ways with Chilwell. If they choose to sell Chilwell, they could command a transfer fee, as the England international is contracted until 2027.

    WHAT NEXT?

United’s need for reinforcements in the left-back position has been exacerbated by injuries to their existing players. Tyrell Malacia has yet to make an appearance this season due to a long-term injury, while Luke Shaw has only recently returned to action, coming off the bench in a game against Ipswich Town. This lack of reliable options has placed pressure on United to act swiftly in the transfer market.

'They will be tough opposition' – Matthew Mott wary of well-prepped India ahead of home series

‘If anything we’ll be a bit vulnerable because we won’t have had a lot of cricket”

Australia women’s head coach Matthew Mott is wary that India may be the better-prepared side when the two teams meet in September, with the home side coming off an extended period without playing and a chance that their lead-in will be disrupted by Covid-19.India women’s tour includes three ODIs, a day-night Test in Perth, and three T20Is. It will be Australia’s first cricket since the New Zealand tour in April. India, meanwhile, are in England where they drew the one-off Test and are currently 2-0 down in the ODI series. A number of their players are then set to remain in the UK for the Hundred, a competition that was due to have a heavy Australian presence as well (including Mott himself as coach of the Welsh Fire) but that is now likely to be significantly reduced because of the complexities of travel and quarantine.Mott was hopeful of being able to gather his squad in Brisbane in August but the recent flare-up of Covid-19 in Australia, which has sent various cities into lockdown and closed internal borders, has been a reminder of how difficult planning could be.”[India] are an emerging supergiant in the game, they have a lot of great players and they will be tough opposition,” Mott said on the day he signed a two-year contract extension. “They are playing over in England at the moment and, if anything, we’ll be a bit vulnerable because we won’t have had a lot of cricket. So that’s at the forefront of our mind.”It would be great to get everyone back together face to face, have a really strong camp in Brisbane at the NCC [National Cricket Centre] with fantastic new facilities out there. And just for some of the southern states to train outside in good weather. So fingers crossed the borders open up and we’re free of Covid as much as we can be and we navigate around.”I suppose the big word is agility and we keep learning every day about how much we have to quickly turn and go in a separate direction, so we’re open to that. The states are doing an outstanding job with our players, we’re in constant contact, so from that point of view we’re being really well-serviced and we’re not worried by that, but there’s nothing like getting together as a group.”The India series will mark the beginning of a two-year period where Australia will aim to sweep the prizes on offer in the world game: a home Ashes, the ODI World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the defence of their T20 World Cup title and an away Ashes.Mott reiterated that the ODI World Cup was the “burning desire” for the team after their semi-final exit in 2017, but the ambition stretched much further. “We want to win them all, every team should be striving for that,” he said. However, he was aware of the physical and mental toll that could put on the players particularly amid the pandemic and there would be constant monitoring of workloads.”It’s something at the forefront of our mind, managing the player fatigue,” he said. “It’s a different world that we live in now and quarantine can have an impact on players and staff. Talking to the players individually about where they are at, everyone’s at a different stage of their life and career so it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all policy. We have those discussions at all times and do the best we can to predict what’s coming up, how players might be flagging at different times and giving them a mental and physical break if needed.”It was confirmed later on Friday that Mott had withdrawn from the Hundred but he said he would be committed to the tournament in the future.”I have been in contact with the team over the last couple of months and working through some options,” he said. “I’m incredibly committed to the club long-term, takes a strong place in my heart from my days at Glamorgan. Mark Wallace [the Fire’s manager] is a close friend and he’s worked through a lot and the next couple of weeks will be an interesting space.”The story was updated after confirmation Mott wouldn’t go to the Hundred

Kylian Mbappe needs to take the responsibility of improving his on-field chemistry with Real Madrid star man Vinicius Jr. in order to turn a corner and thrive at the club, according to former France midfield maestro Robert Pires. Mbappe has, so far, failed to live up to his reputation as one of the best players in the world and has been overshadowed by Vini's exploits at times.

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Real Madrid haven't had the best of starts to this season, falling six points behind Barcelona in the LaLiga title race after only 12 matchdays. Meanwhile, they have already lost twice in the Champioons League group stage. The struggles of Carlo Ancelotti and Co. have coincided with Mbappe's lack of killer punch in front of goal.

The Frenchman has scored eight goals in 16 games in all competitions, but has scored just once in the team's last seven games. In the same duration, his strike partner Vini Jr. has notched two hat-tricks, taking his contribution for the season to 12 goals and seven assists in 17 games in all competitions.

Pires, thus, opined that Mbappe must adapt to Vini's status as 'the' left-winger of the team and mould his game to become a more well-rounded No. 9.

  • WHAT ROBERT PIRES SAID

Appearing on Egyptian television channel MBC MASR 2 (h/t MARCA), Pires said: "He is facing strong criticism in both France and Spain, as he is not at his best. Currently, he is not decisive for Real Madrid and is not scoring or creating many goal-scoring opportunities.

“Real Madrid fans had high expectations for Mbappe since his arrival. However, changing country, team and team-mates is not easy, especially when it comes to a club with the best players on the planet. Mbappe must face these criticisms, change his style of play, recognize that he is not at his best and improve his performance."

Mbappe's misfiring start to his chapter in the Spanish capital has been blamed to the presence of Vini Jr, who is unchanged as the team's undisputed left winger. Pires, though, diasgreed: "Mbappe dreamed of playing for Real Madrid. He knows perfectly well that Vinícius, who is an exceptional player, plays in the same position as him, is decisive and scores a lot of goals. Mbappe must adapt to this situation and to the different tactics of the team.

"Turning down Real Madrid is difficult for any player. The solution is for Mbappe to adapt to Real Madrid's tactical style, and it is Ancelotti's job to find tactical solutions that suit both Mbappe and Vinícius."

Mbappe was surprisingly left out of the France squad by Didier Deschamps for this month's Nations League fixtures, sparking rumours of a potential rift between Les Bleus boss Deschamps and the French captain. He'll stay back in Valdebebas to rediscover his best form ahead of Madrid's next game, a visit to Leganes on November 24.

The Red Dragons, who are eyeing a third consecutive promotion, fell to third position in the League One table after Charlton Athletic held them to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. The Welsh club were on the cusp of victory and enjoyed a one-goal lead until the 95th minute when Max Cleworth was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. Matthew Godden scored the resulting penalty, in what was a sucker punch for the visitors.

Manager Parkinson was left fuming after the game as he felt that the club were robbed of a victory and directly put the blame on the referee. He did, however, praise his players for their efforts on the pitch while claiming that his side were the more dominant of the two teams.

WHAT PHIL PARKINSON SAID

Speaking to Wrexham's , the 56-year-old said: "The ball comes in the box and the lad wins the header. It drops down and hits Max Cleworth on his arm, which is low and by his side – it’s never a penalty in a million years. We’re relying on the referee to get the one big decision in the game right, and he got it wrong. It’s very frustrating. The ref has cost us two points today in my opinion. The quality of the performance was very, very high for us today – I thought we were outstanding. We controlled the game for long periods and the quality on the ball was really good.

"Some of the football was very good. I feel for the lads in there because coming to a place in front of 24,000 people and handling the occasion so well, we just played with confidence and calmness. It was a performance which warranted three points. You can see the way the Charlton fans and players celebrated at the end shows what a good team we are. They have celebrated the point as if they have won convincingly.”

After playing out back-to-back draws against Huddersfield and Charlton, the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned team will aim to get back to winning ways on November 3 as they take on Harrogate Town in an FA Cup first-round clash.

He’s Sesko 2.0: Chelsea have big interest in £25m ace who outscored Jackson

The striker position at Chelsea is the priority this summer, and it seems that multiple reinforcements will occur.

Benjamin Sesko had been the main target initially, but after the Slovenian star signed a new deal at RB Leipzig, attention turned towards other options.

Marc Guiu is all but confirmed to be a Blue after Todd Boehly has decided to activate the 18-year-old’s release clause of £5m.

However, it looks as though Chelsea are on the hunt for a striker with experience playing in the senior game, with one particular target even outscoring Nicolas Jackson last season.

Chelsea are eyeing up another striker

As per reports from Sky Germany via Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea are keeping an eye on Maximilian Beier.

Maximilian Beier

It’s mentioned that the young striker has ‘concrete interest’ from Chelsea as well as Aston Villa.

The two Premier League teams ‘have gathered information' about the Germany international as they weigh up their options.

However, if the Blues do decide to move for the 21-year-old, they must activate his £25m release clause, but any deal will occur after the European Championships.

Why Beier could prove to be the best alternative to Sesko

Last season, Beier finally announced himself to the Bundesliga during his first major campaign in the German top flight.

Starting as a striker for Hoffenheim, he led the line with the confidence of achieving European football, which was accomplished.

The German started 29 matches in the league, where he proved that he was able to thrive against the very best, netting against Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund. He's certainly a man who thrives in big games.

Overall, his goal tally stood at 16 in the Bundesliga alone, with none of those being from the spot, which just proves how much potential he has.

Clearly, Beier’s 16-goal campaign is superior to Jackson’s output from his debut season in England, as the 23-year-old scored 14 goals.

The main difference between the number 14 and Chelsea’s centre forward is their composure and finishing ability, with Jackson underperforming his xG massively and Beier doing the complete opposite.

The 2002-born star is the definition of a clinical finisher, which is just one reason why FBref have classified him as a ‘similar player’ to Sesko.

Neither player is particularly developed in terms of their overall game, with improvements likely needed in order to take that next step, but there’s no denying that they’re a huge threat in the final third.

Maximilian Beier in action for Hoffenheim.

Their low involvement in non-attacking actions proves this, as they often go spells without being involved in the play, but that’s not to say that’s a negative, especially given the creative quality in the Chelsea attack.

Football scout Antonio Mango even labelled Beier as an “exceptional” talent, with his speed and dynamism making him difficult to deal with in any game state, just like Sesko.

Overall, if Chelsea are on the lookout for a player to thrive and develop alongside Jackson, then Beier would be the perfect option, but Enzo Maresca may then have the difficult decision of choosing who to start in his lone striker formation.

DRS: Should Haider Ali have been given out?

What happens when technology and the naked eye contradict each other, as was the case in the second ODI?

Danyal Rasool01-Nov-2020Haider Ali’s debut ODI innings was going well until it was cut short by what, according to replays, would appear to be a TV umpiring error. The dismissal was a point of interest in an otherwise routine game with little drama. Pakistan got on top early in the second ODI against Zimbabwe, never relinquishing control, and running down a small target on a good batting surface with consummate ease. But the decision that ended Haider’s innings on 29 – and the process that led to it – raised several questions. In the 22nd over, with Pakistan sitting pretty on 137 for 2, requiring 70 more for a series-sealing triumph, Haider tried to lap Sean Williams to fine leg. He missed, and the ball hit his pads. On-field umpire Aleem Dar had little hesitation in raising the finger. The batsman immediately reviewed and front-on slow-motion replays appeared to show the path of the ball deviating after it went past Haider’s bat, onto the pads – apparently off Haider’s gloves. Third umpire Ahsan Raza requested UltraEdge, though the technology showed no obvious spike at the moment slow-motion replays appeared to show a deflection. After lengthy and repeated side-by-side replays, Raza finally decided to go with UltraEdge, ruling that Haider must not have hit it. HawkEye went on to show the ball hitting the stumps, which meant the on-field decision of lbw had to stand. Haider was sent on his way, shaking his head.Though the technology is not thought to have failed, DRS playing condition 3.3.7 states that if it does “for whatever reason, the third umpire shall advise the on-field umpire of this fact but still provide any relevant factual information that may be ascertained from the available television replays and other technology”. The preceding conditions say that “if despite the available technology, the third umpire is unable to decide with a high degree of confidence whether the original on-field decision should be changed, then he/she shall report that the replays are ‘inconclusive’, and that the on-field decision shall stand”.That wasn’t the only awkward moment for the third umpire in what turned out to be a tricky afternoon. When Mohammad Rizwan was beaten and bowled by a Sikandar Raza delivery, the on-field umpires referred the matter to the TV umpire, just to confirm that Zimbabwe’s wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor hadn’t knocked the bails off with his gloves. He hadn’t – conclusively – and while Raza appeared to make his mind up quickly, it was the “not out” sign that flashed on the big screen, much to everyone’s bemusement. After a short delay, the right call was made, and Rizwan was on his way.
