Man Utd eye Antony & Gakpo double deal

Manchester United could reportedly be in line to sign Ajax winger Antony and PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo this summer, with new boss Erik ten Hag keen to bolster his forward line before the end of the window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, who wrote on Twitter about that potential double swoop:

“Would not rule out United signing both Antony and Gakpo.”

The latest suggestion is that the Red Devils are readying a new offer of around €94m (£79m) for Antony – who is said to be keen on the move –  having seen an €80m (£67m) bid rejected by the Brazilian’s current side earlier in the window.

As for Gakpo, the Dutchman has also been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford late, with one report suggesting he could cost in the region of €50m (£42m) if United do decide to pursue a move.

Murtough masterstroke

Although there has been suggestion that the Premier League side’s pursuit of Antony has seen the club somewhat cool their interest in his fellow Eredivisie star, if Crook is to be believed there are still lingering hopes that a major double deal can be secured.

While it may prove a fairly sizeable move at a combined fee of around £121m – having only recently splashed out on £70m to land Casemiro from Real Madrid – it would appear that new forward additions are a necessity, particularly amid the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese icon has seemingly been angling for a move throughout the current window amid a desire to play Champions League football, while he was also resigned to the bench in the recent triumph over Liverpool.

While a lack of suitors may potentially see the 37-year-old remain at the Theatre of Dreams beyond the end of the window, even if the 189-cap genius were to stay there is still a requirement for fresh faces in attack.

At present, Ten Hag appears set to hang is hat on an attacking lineup of Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, although that trio netted just 11 goals in all competitions between them last season, with further competition no doubt needed to apply some much-needed pressure.

Equally, there is little depth beyond those three men, with it yet to be seen if the youthful pairing of Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho can be relied upon this season, with the latter man, in particular, having made just three senior outings thus far.

In Antony then, the Manchester outfit would be acquiring a player who scored 12 goals and provided ten assists in all competitions last season, with only Bruno Fernandes and compatriot Ronaldo having provided more goal contributions among the United squad during the 2021/22 campaign.

His arrival could also solve the long-standing issue on the right flank, with even the capture of the aforementioned Sancho having failed to prove a solution to that position last season.

As for Gakpo, the 23-year-old enjoyed a fine campaign in Holland last time out, chipping in with 36 goal contributions in just 47 games across all fronts, while he’s also started the new season with seven goals and assists in as many games thus far.

Equally, the youngster’s versatility to feature all across the front line could also prove invaluable to Ten Hag, particularly should Ronaldo depart, with the club no doubt in need of greater depth as they look to compete on a number of fronts.

With PSV’s recent Champions League exit having also potentially handed United a green light to sign the 6 foot 2 sensation, it falls upon technical director John Murtough to ensure that the club can get both deals over the line.

As deadline day approaches at the end of a typically frantic window for the three-time European champions, Murtough can produce a late masterstroke by wrapping that double deal.

Oriol Romeu could leave Southampton

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is being linked with a move away from St Mary’s and it could prove to be a mistake by Ralph Hasenhuttl if he is allowed to leave.

What’s the word?

According to reports from Spain, via Sport Witness, Girona are currently in negotiations with Southampton over a move for the former Chelsea man.

He suggests that Michel, the Girona manager, is very keen to add Romeu to his squad before the transfer window shuts and considering his contract at St Mary’s is set to expire at the end of this season, a deal could well be on the cards.

A big mistake?

While Southampton have recruited Romeo Lavia as a new defensive-midfielder this summer, the former Manchester City man is just 18 and it feels like a big risk for Hasenhuttl to put his faith in so many youngsters.

At 30, Romeu is one of the few experienced heads in Southampton’s dressing room right now and has shown in recent seasons how important he can be to the Saints.

Last season saw the midfielder make 36 appearances in the Premier League, averaging a solid 6.87 rating from WhoScored for his performances, which was only bettered by James Ward-Prowse in Southampton’s squad.

This emphasises how important he can be to Hasenhuttl, and yet the Austrian manager favoured Lavia in midfield in last weekend’s draw against Leeds United, which suggests that he feels Romeu doesn’t have a long-term future in his side.

The average age of Southampton’s lineup in both Premier League games thus far has been 24.7 and if Alan Hansen’s famous remark that ‘you can’t win anything with kids’ is true, then Hasenhuttl’s side could be in real trouble this season.

Romeu has been a key player at Southampton in recent seasons and has consistently impressed, with Pep Guardiola dubbing him “one of the best” defensive midfielders in the league, while Hasenhuttl also sang his praises in 2020, saying:

“I have never seen a professional like him before in my entire managing career.

“He’s one of the most professional guys I’ve ever seen.

[freshpress-quiz id=“658847”]

“When you see him as a professional, how he reacts when he’s not first choice, it’s unbelievable.”

Romeu is exactly the sort of character you would want to have in the squad when things aren’t going your way and letting him leave could be a big mistake by Southampton if they continue to struggle this season.

Man City: Huge Phil Foden contract news

Manchester City have been gifted a huge boost as reliable journalist Mike Keegan shares some contract news involving star midfielder Phil Foden.

The Lowdown: Guardiola prepares…

The Sky Blues retained their Premier League crown in dramatic fashion on the final day of 2021/2022, beating Aston Villa 3-2 with a trio of goals in the final 15 minutes.

Strikes from Ilkay Gundogan (2) and Rodri sealed one of the most memorable comebacks in English football history after Pep Guardiola’s side went two goals down, but while that is fun to look back on for supporters, it’s now straight back to business for the players this weekend.

City travel to West Ham for their opening match of the new season and they will be aiming to gazump rivals Liverpool again by keeping the title at Eastlands.

In preparation, they’ve seen a host of players come in through the door with Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega putting pen to paper.

While some big names like Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have departed, Guardiola may have been handed a big boost as Keegan shares a Foden contract update.

The Latest: Keegan shares ‘great’ Foden news…

Indeed, according to The Daily Mail’s reporter, it appears the 22-year-old is about to be tied down to a bumper new deal.

Keegan explained (via Twitter):

“Believe Phil Foden has now agreed a new, long-term deal with Manchester City. Great news for the club with season days away.”

The journalist, sharing more good news, also went on to claim that there is a Foden ‘announcement expected‘ in the next few days or perhaps early next week.

The Verdict: Massive…

The City starlet is a crucial player in Guardiola’s side having finished 21/22 as one of their top performers, so this news comes as very welcome.

Adored at the Etihad Stadium by supporters, the prospect of a new long term deal for Foden is a very exciting one and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him finish his career in Manchester.

Leeds transfer news on Raphinha

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has revealed what the ‘final target’ position for Leeds United is, and what ‘major’ business they still need to ‘negotiate’.

The Lowdown: Sinisterra signs

The Elland Road outfit confirmed the signing of winger Luis Sinisterra from Feyenoord at lunchtime, and he becomes their sixth new arrival in this window joining Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Darko Gyabi, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca.

FC Barcelona and Chelsea are currently tussling over the signing of Raphinha, which would give Jesse Marsch’s side further funds to potentially spend and bring in more recruits.

The Latest: New forward targeted

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Hay has revealed that the Yorkshire club will ‘invest’ in a new forward, which is the ‘final target’ on their list.

This can be done with the sale of Raphinha, which Hay says is the only ‘major’ piece of business that they still need to ‘negotiate’.

The Verdict: Needed

The arrival of Sinisterra should accommodate for the likely departure of Raphinha, so the Whites can use the money received to invest in a much-needed striker for the team.

Patrick Bamford is the only senior one in the current squad, and his season was seven Premier League starts.

Both Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood are still learning their trade at 20 years of age, and so the Peacocks could really do with another senior frontman in case Bamford faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Everton plotting bid for Gibbs-White

Everton are reportedly plotting a bid for Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and the Englishman could be an excellent addition to Frank Lampard’s side at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports journalists, Dharmesh Sheth and Alan Myers, Everton and Nottingham Forest are both interested in signing the 22-year-old this summer, with Wolves valuing him at around £25m.

They suggest that Wolves are yet to decide whether or not they want to let him leave, although a lack of first-team appearances in his time at Molineux may encourage him to seek pastures new.

In full, the tweet read: “Everton interested in Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White & expected to make official offer. Told Wolves value him at £25m but yet to decide whether they will allow him to leave. Nottingham Forest have also shown an interest.”

Having progressed through the academy at Wolves, the midfielder has been limited to just 86 appearances in all competitions, despite making his first-team debut in the 2016/17 season and it seems as if Bruno Lage was not all that keen on him, as he was allowed to join Sheffield United on loan last season.

He would make 37 appearances in total for the Blades, contributing 12 goals and ten assists, playing a big part as Paul Heckingbottom’s side reached the Championship playoffs before defeat against Nottingham Forest.

Supporters will be buzzing

Gibbs-White’s loan spell last season emphasised just what he is capable of and at 22 years old, he still has a lot of time to progress and achieve his obvious potential.

Should he complete a move to Everton, he would be learning from one of the best English midfielders of all time in Frank Lampard, who would undoubtedly be able to have a positive influence on his game.

The Toffees were desperately low on attacking quality and creativity in their midfield last season, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s two goals and four assists the most of any central midfield option in Lampard’s squad.

Former Barnsley boss Poyo Asbaghi was full of praise for Gibbs-White last season, saying:

“He’s a really good player. I think Sheffield United have a lot of good players, but he is the most outstanding one.

“Of course we respect him and what he can do. He’s good like he showed for the goal, scoring and running in behind, but he is so good when he drops in-between the centre backs and the midfield to receive the ball to attack the spaces from there.”

Therefore, Everton supporters will no doubt be delighted to hear that they are looking to sign such a promising young talent on the back of a superb season with Sheffield United, and will be hoping that they can win the race to sign the Wolves man this summer.

Aston Villa: Villans make Otavio offer

Aston Villa have had a bid rejected for FC Porto attacking midfielder Otavio, as per Portuguese outlet Maisfutebol.

The lowdown: Career so far

Signed from Brazilian outfit Internacional in 2014, Otavio spent a season out on loan at fellow Primeira Liga side Vitoria Guimaraes before returning to Porto, where the creative ace has gone from strength to strength.

The 27-year-old has directly contributed to 86 goals in 237 outings for the Portuguese giants, playing a key role in a side that has lifted the top-flight title on three occasions, the domestic cup twice and the Super Cup twice.

Previously linked with a move to Liverpool and Manchester United, now it seems as though the Premier League could be calling for Otavio once again this summer…

The latest: Villans make their move

As per Maisfutebol, Aston Villa have recently made a bid for the seven-cap Portugal international.

It’s claimed that Porto ‘refused an offer’ of €30million (£25million) from the Midlands club and will hold out for a €60million (£51million) release clause.

However, the report also states that Otavio currently has a ‘discount’ on the aforementioned release clause until July 15 which could see the man described as ‘underrated’ by writer Jamie Farr leave for closer to €40million (£34million).

The verdict: Pay up

If the initial offer was a statement of admiration from Villa and manager Steven Gerrard, NSWE should be willing to go the extra yard required to meet the demands and indeed match the bosses’ ambitions.

Last season, Otavio scored five times and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, operating predominantly from the right-wing, a problem position at Villa Park owing to the injuries of Leon Bailey and the inconsistency of the soon-to-be on the move Bertrand Traore.

Overall, the Brazilian-born forward earned a superb 7.48 Sofascore rating – higher than any Villa player managed – whilst winning 7.4 duels, making 2.3 key passes and successfully completing 1.1 dribbles on average per league outing, highlighting a workmanlike side to a game based mainly on having an impact in the final third.

Not only would the addition of Otavio solve a problem position in the Villans’ squad but the Portuguese star would also add much-needed versatility to the ranks that could be hugely beneficial in what looks certain to be another long campaign.

Manchester United: Dharmesh Sheth drops Frenkie de Jong update

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has provided an update on Manchester United’s attempts to sign Frenkie de Jong.

The Lowdown: Romano’s reveal

United have been linked with a move for the Barcelona star ever since Erik ten Hag took over at Old Trafford at the end of April.

Fabrizio Romano provided a key update regarding De Jong and the Red Devils on Wednesday morning. The transfer expert revealed that United have ‘opened direct talks’ with Barca, who want €85m for the midfielder’s services.

De Jong reportedly wants to play Champions League football, something United can’t currently offer, however, they are still looking to ‘push’ for a move.

The Latest: Sheth’s update

Sheth took to Twitter hours on from Romano’s claim on De Jong to share what he knows regarding a possible transfer.

The Sky Sports reporter stated that United have indeed ‘held initial talks’ over a transfer, but he’s been ‘told’ there are ‘significant obstacles’, name-checking a fee and will of the player as two.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-3/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Barca’s financial situation key?

As Sheth claims, agreeing on a fee and persuading De Jong to move to Old Trafford could prove tricky. However, something that could work in United’s favour is Barcelona’s ‘financial issues’.

The Catalan giants ‘need to solve’ their problems off the pitch, according to Romano, so selling De Jong for a big fee would certainly help their situation.

It appears as if a move could be extremely complicated, and with United looking at a ‘number of midfielders’ and making it their priority area to bolster, it’ll be interesting to see how long they pursue De Jong before moving on to alternative targets.

Sunderland handed Bailey Wright boost

Early Sunderland team news has emerged as they prepare to face Wycombe in the League One play-off final on Saturday…

What’s the latest?

Alex Neil has confirmed that Bailey Wright and Lynden Gooch should be fine for the showpiece occasion at Wembley after picking up knocks in the semi-final tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Aside from that, the Black Cats have no other fresh concerns to worry about heading into the game this weekend and look set to have the same squad available to them.

The 40-year-old told the club’s official website, via Sunderland Echo: “I think that we’ve come through both of those legs relatively unscathed, which is good.”We’ve got a couple of bumps and bruises, Bailey Wright got a bit of a split round his eye and I think Goochy had one on his head as well. But there’s nothing too significant, so we’re hoping that we can get the lads through this week so that they’re fine and firing and ready to go.” Supporters will be buzzing

Sunderland supporters will be buzzing by this news for multiple reasons.

Firstly, there are no new injuries to contend with, which is a huge relief as it means that all of the players who contributed to the semi-final win will also be available this weekend. It is a gigantic clash at Wembley with promotion on the line, and Neil will need as many of his players fit as possible to give them the best chance of making it back to the Championship.

The Stadium of Light faithful will also be delighted to hear that Wright should be fine after sustaining a knock against the Owls. Having him in the team against Wycombe will be a big boost, as he leaves it all out on the pitch and will put his body on the line for the club.

After the second leg against Wednesday, Roker Report writer Philip West heaped praise on the 29-year-old, tweeting: “Bailey Wright, what a warrior. Bloodstained shirt, blood trickling down his face, but he was an absolute rock tonight. That’s what playing for this club is about. Heart of a lion.”

The Australian was magnificent at the back that night, winning six duel and making one clearance, block and interception (as per Sofascore). That kind of performance, perfectly summed up by West, is what Sunderland will need on Saturday to see off Wycombe.

This is why Black Cats supporters will surely be buzzing with this update from Neil and will now be hoping that Wright is named in the starting XI at Wembley.

Mission Improbable: Capitals' obstacle course through the IPL playoffs

Capitals will have to match one of the all-time great IPL performances to win the tournament. Will they do it?

Varun Shetty and Dustin Silgardo10-May-2019In the history of the IPL, only two teams have reached the final after having won the eliminator, and just one of them have gone on to win the tournament. Since the implementation of the playoffs system, Sunrisers Hyderabad are the only team to win the trophy after winning the eliminator. They did this in 2016, when they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. Chennai Super Kings are the only other team to start in the eliminator and make the final, which happened in 2012.Batting collapses caused Delhi Capitals to lose points in the league stage and drop to third in the points table after they were on top for a while. Now, for them to make the final, a mighty task lies ahead. Two knockouts in a weekCapitals will basically have to win their third game in seven days to win the tournament, and will have won four in nine days if they do pull it off.Once again, only Sunrisers have achieved anything comparable at the back end of a tournament when they won four games in 11 days in 2016, before winning three in five days to seal the title. In the same season, Royal Challengers had a streak of five wins in 11 days, which was snapped in the final, even though they had three days off before that game.Other teams have had comparable streaks. Kings XI Punjab won five away games in a row in the middle of the 2014 season, Rajasthan Royals had five wins in nine days in 2015, and Delhi Daredevils got four in eight days in 2012. All of these streaks had 50% or fewer games at home, so they were commendable feats, but none of them involved the pressure of the playoffs. In essence, Capitals will have to match one of the all-time great IPL performances to finish on top.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe tight schedule and travelWhat makes Capitals’ task even harder is that the playoffs are a packed affair, which could well leave them struggling by the end of it. Their run-chase against Sunrisers on May 8 was tense, but they only have around 44 hours to recover and prepare for the second qualifier. At least that game is at the same venue, Visakhapatnam, so they will not have to travel. If they beat Super Kings, though, they will have to board a flight the next day to Hyderabad, which will leave them just one evening and the next morning to prepare for the final. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians, who qualified for the final after winning the first qualifier, would have had five full days in between their last game and the final.Only 11 times in IPL history has a team gone on a three-match winning streak over five days or fewer when they played one game or less at home. So Capitals are trying to do something that is done less than once in a season. They are punching upWinning three matches in five days is tough enough, but it’s even tougher when you are facing the toughest opposition. Capitals have already beaten Sunrisers, the fourth-placed team. Now, they have to beat the top two sides in the competition – Super Kings and Mumbai – back to back. Those two sides have proven themselves to be the best two teams in the league not just this season but also historically. Capitals lost both the matches against Super Kings in the league stage this year. With all this, they are up for a tough challenge going into the second qualifier.

Getting started with a six (or a couple of blobs)

Also, who has the most international hat-tricks? And is Misbah the oldest Test captain ever?

Steven Lynch11-Apr-2017Has anyone hit his first ball in Test cricket for six? And how about his last ball? asked Julian Metcalfe from England

The only player so far to hit the first ball he received in Test cricket for six was the New Zealand offspinner Mark Craig, who cracked Sulieman Benn of West Indies over the long-off boundary in Kingston in June 2014. In the field that day, probably nodding approvingly, was Chris Gayle, who remains the only man to hit the very first ball of a Test match for six – from the debutant Sohag Gazi of Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2012. The only man known to have hit his last ball in Test cricket for six was another West Indian, Wayne Daniel, against Australia in Port-of-Spain in 1984.Lasith Malinga took a T20 hat-trick the other day, to go with three in ODIs. Does he hold the record for international hat-tricks? asked Mahinda Villarayan from Sri Lanka

Lasith Malinga’s hat-trick against Bangladesh in Colombo last week was only the fifth in T20 internationals so far. Malinga has also taken three hat-tricks in one-day internationals – against South Africa in Providence during the 2007 World Cup (when he uniquely claimed four wickets in four balls), against Kenya in Colombo during the 2011 World Cup, and against Australia in Colombo later in 2011. The only other man to take four international hat-tricks is Wasim Akram – two in Tests (in successive matches against Sri Lanka in 1998-99), and two in ODIs (both in Sharjah in 1989-90).I noticed that India’s openers Gavaskar and Srikkanth were both out for ducks against England in 1981-82. How often has this happened in ODIs? asked Harshad Patel from India

That match in Ahmedabad in 1981 was actually the first case of both openers being out for a duck in a one-day international innings. It happened again to Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth not long afterwards, against Zimbabwe in Tunbridge Wells during the 1983 World Cup, in the match in which Kapil Dev’s stunning 175 not out rescued his side from 17 for 5. There have been a total of 38 such instances now, the most recent by Peter Moor and Chamu Chibhabha for Zimbabwe against Afghanistan in Sharjah in 2015-16.Hats off: Misbah-ul-Haq is poised to become the fifth-oldest Test captain of all time•AFPI was sorry to see that Misbah-ul-Haq is going to retire. Will he be the oldest Test captain of all? asked Khalid Iftikhar Ahmed from Pakistan

Assuming Misbah-ul-Haq leads Pakistan in the Tests in West Indies as planned, he will become – at almost 43 years of age – the fifth-oldest Test captain of all time, and the oldest for nearly 70 years. The top three are all English: WG Grace was 50 in 1899, Gubby Allen 45 in 1947-48, and Wally Hammond 43 in 1946-47, while Warren Bardsley was also 43 when he stood in as Australia’s captain in some of the Tests in England in 1926. Misbah also has the chance to move up from sixth to fourth on the list of oldest Test century-makers. He’s already the oldest captain to make a hundred, doing so against England at Lord’s last year.Has anyone umpired Tests in all ten possible countries, plus the UAE? asked James Armstrong from England

I think there are four men who fit the bill here. Steve Bucknor’s record 128 Tests included appearances in all ten Test-playing countries, plus two matches in Sharjah, while Billy Bowden (84 Tests), Asoka de Silva (49) and Daryl Harper (95) all stood in the ten traditional countries and the UAE as well. Note that for these purposes I’m considering the West Indies as one country: if you count the Caribbean nations separately, then Bowden stood in Tests in 17 different countries.Which Test player was nicknamed “Mystery”? asked Brian Hanagan from Australia

I think there may have been more than one player who acquired this nickname, but the one I first thought of was the former New Zealand batsman John Morrison, who later became a TV commentator. He played 17 Tests between 1973-74 and 1981-82, his 656 runs including 117 against Australia at the SCG in his second match, in 1973-74. Morrison had a mysterious grey streak in his hair when he was playing, but the nickname owed more to his slow left-arm bowling, which looked innocuous from the boundary but which nonetheless claimed a few victims – only two in Tests, but 51 in all first-class games. “There was also a bit of a mystery as to my whereabouts after play was over,” admitted Morrison with a smile.Post your questions in the comments below
