Nick Hockley: Australia players' IPL availability yet to be discussed

Priority is to reunite the IPL returnees with families as they come out of quarantine on Monday, CA CEO says

Andrew McGlashan31-May-2021Cricket Australia has yet to start discussions over whether players will be able to head back to the IPL when the tournament resumes in the UAE later this year as those who had returned from the suspended competition completed their quarantine in Sydney on Monday. The cohort of Australians – players, commentators, coaches and match officials – endured a long journey home when the tournament was halted earlier this month, having to travel via a stay in the Maldives due to Australia’s border being closed to arrivals from India, before a BCCI-chartered flight brought them back when restrictions were partly lifted. While Australia do not have any international commitments when the IPL is due to resume it is unlikely that all the players will resume their deals. The tournament is now set to run almost straight into the T20 World Cup – which still seems likely to be moved to the UAE, although the BCCI has asked the ICC for more time to see if the showpiece event can be held as scheduled in India – meaning another lengthy stint in various biosecure bubbles for those involved in both. It will also clash with the start of the Australian domestic season, although last year players with IPL deals did skip state cricket.”Once we get back together as a group that [the IPL] is something we’ll obviously need to discuss,” Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, said on the day he was confirmed in the role full-time. “Our players returning from the IPL have only today come out of quarantine, so our first priority is to make sure they are reunited with their families…we [then] have a tour to prepare for in the West Indies.”Following the T20 World Cup, players will need to do a further two weeks quarantine in Australia then those in the Test squad will go straight into the opening match of the men’s season against Afghanistan in Hobart before the Ashes in December.Australia have named a preliminary squad of 23 for the West Indies tour in July, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs, with that expected to be trimmed to around 18. They are then due to go straight from the West Indies to Bangladesh for five T20Is although those dates have yet to be rubberstamped.Related

The group coming out of quarantine on Monday included nine players who are part of the enlarged squad while Kane Richardson, Andrew Tye and Adam Zampa – who left the IPL shortly before Australia’s borders closed to arrivals from India – are also included. There have been reports that David Warner and Pat Cummins may not be included in the final squad so they are able to spend more time with their families. Allrounder Daniel Sams, who contracted Covid-19 shortly before the IPL started, made himself unavailable for selection.”They are clearly quite shaken by the experience, and are very appreciative to be back home, very much looking forward to being reunited with family and friends today,” Hockley said. “It’s a couple of weeks before the West Indies touring party then regroups at the National Cricket Centre [in Brisbane] and then that’s the time to refocus.”Hockley also confirmed that Cricket Australia is continuing to work towards getting the squad Covid-19 vaccines before they depart in late June.Last month the Australian government approved vaccines for Olympians who will be heading to Tokyo and the cricketers are set to come under the same eligibility criteria for those given exemptions to leave Australia for work purposes.”We really welcomed the government announcements that people with exemptions to leave Australia for work will be eligible for the vaccine,” Hockley said. “Now once the players are out of quarantine we will be working to offer them vaccinations before heading off to the West Indies.”

Attacking gem agrees to join Man United after deciding to leave Arsenal

A young attacker from the academy has agreed to join Manchester United after deciding to leave Arsenal this summer, with the Red Devils scheduling an imminent medical after being successful with a "magnificent" offer.

Players who could be sold by Arsenal before deadline day

The latest confirmed departure will have divided opinion among some Arsenal supporters, with Hale End academy graduate and homegrown ex-Gunners ace Emile Smith-Rowe making a £35 million move to Fulham.

Arteta and Edu discuss signing Brazil ace as £50m Arsenal player nears exit

The Gunners chiefs have held internal talks over a move.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 3, 2024

The midfielder was handed minimal opportunities last season, thanks partly to fitness issues, but the attacking quality in Mikel Arteta's side also largely kept him out of the starting eleven on a regular basis – making a move probably best for all parties.

Arteta would've ideally preferred to keep Smith-Rowe, according to some reports, but the £35 million fee received will go down as pure profit due to his academy player status – and the funds can be now be reinvested into acquiring a much-needed fresh addition or two.

The 24-year-old's departure may not be the only academy player we see leave Arsenal before deadline day on August 30, as it is believed Eddie Nketiah is attracting real interest from Ligue 1 giants Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi.

Some media sources have even claimed that Nketiah is on the verge of leaving Arsenal, and they've considered signing Brighton star Joao Pedro as a replacement, coming after the Brazilian netted 20 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

However, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims it isn't that close, despite Nketiah and Marseille reaching an agreement on personal terms for him to link up with De Zerbi in Ligue 1.

There is also the matter of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who has been widely linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium, so supporters could see a few more departures in the coming weeks.

Chido Obi-Martin agrees to join Man Utd after leaving Arsenal

One very disappointing exit, despite Arsenal's best efforts to keep him, has been that of exciting young striker Chido Obi-Martin. Arsenal were working hard to keep Obi-Martin, who scored a very impressive 32 goals in just 18 league appearances for Arsenal's Under-18s last season, but the teenage sensation decided to leave and further his career elsewhere.

Now, according to Football Insider journalist Wayne Veysey, Obi-Martin has agreed to join Man United after quitting Arsenal, with a medical scheduled for this week. Erik ten Hag's side apparently made a "magnificent" offer to the 16-year-old, which he accepted, and a move up north now looks set in stone.

Ruud van Nistelrooy apparently held direct talks with Obi-Martin, which was said to be key in convincing the striker to join them. Arsenal supporters will be hoping he doesn't live up to the hype after such promise at academy level, now that he's on his way to a fierce rival.

Mohammad Hafeez excluded for South Africa T20Is after bio-bubble deadlock with PCB

Four uncapped players – Zafar Gohar, Danish Aziz, Zahid Mahmood and Amad Butt – in 20-man squad

A disagreement between the PCB and Pakistan’s leading T20 runscorer in 2020 has seen Mohammad Hafeez excluded from the 20-man squad for the three-match T20I series announced by chief selector Mohammad Wasim at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday. Hafeez, in the prime form of his T20 career, developed a deadlock over the date at which he would enter the bio-secure bubble with the rest of the Pakistan squad. Presently playing the T10 league in Abu Dhabi, he requested permission to join the squad on on February 5, something the PCB was unwilling to agree to, with the impasse putting paid to his chance of being involved in the series.Hafeez had written an email to the PCB, a copy of which ESPNcricinfo has seen, in mid-December last year, alerting the board about the expected “overlapping “of the fixtures between the home series against South Africa and T10 league. He told the PCB he had already committed to playing that league, which would render him unavailable for the T20I series against South Africa, but the PCB selectors continued to attempt to talk him into making himself available by February 3 at the latest. When the two parties failed to agree to that deadline, Hafeez’s prospects of being involved against South Africa dwindled. That relations between the board and the player weren’t at their peak was evident from a tweet Hafeez posted immediately after the squad was announced, quoting a religious verse that stated “Allah rewards those who are patient.” When ESPNcricinfo contacted him, he declined to comment.”Unfortunately, the scenario is as such that every player has to join the bio-bubble on Feb 3, and if a player can’t do so, it means he is unavailable,” Wasim said. “If he was available, there’s no question on his performance, but unfortunately he is not available.”Pakistan have also dropped Fakhar Zaman and Wahab Riaz for the series, with Shadab Khan injured and Imad Wasim unavailable for personal reasons.Pakistan squad for the 3-match T20 series against South Africa•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Hasan Ali, Asif Ali and Aamer Yamin recalled have all been recalled to the side, with four uncapped players – Zafar Gohar, Danish Aziz, Zahid Mehmood and Amad Butt – named in the squad. Abdullah Shafique, who made his T20I debut in New Zealand, was also dropped, with Wasim saying he believed Shafique was more suitable for the longer versions of the game. Riaz, meanwhile, has paid the price for what Wasim termed was a “lack of consistency” in his game, with the selectors of the view they wanted more reliability from a player of his experience. The 20-year-old fast bowler Musa Khan, who has been with the national side for much of the last two years but struggled to make the step up, picking up 15 wickets at an economy rate of 7.90, has been omitted, with the core fast-bowling unit including Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, and Shaheen Afridi.Pakistan continued to pick Sarfaraz Ahmed as a backup option due to sides carrying a larger squad owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. He was originally dropped from all formats over performance in 2019, and has since then missed a major chunk of first class and domestic one-day cricket, playing 21 T20s – PSL and National T20 – averaging 21.26 with bat. Wasim said Sarfaraz’s inclusion would be reevaluated after the PSL, with selectors understood to favour 22-year old Azam Khan in the long term.Pakistan will look to arrest an alarming slide in T20 cricket that began with a series against South Africa two years ago. In February 2019, Pakistan played a three-match series against this opposition ranked number one in the world, having won a world record 11 successive T20I series. A 2-1 reverse to the South Africans broke that streak, and ever since, Pakistan have lost six of the eight series they have played in the format, with the only two wins coming against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at home. The squad, along with the officials, will enter the bio-secure bubble from Wednesday, February 3, and the players taking part in the Test series will join the bubble at the end of the second Test that starts in Rawalpindi on Thursday, February 4.The T20Is will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium on February 11, 13 and 14.Pakistan squad: Babar Azam, Haider Ali, Khushdil Shah, Hussain Talat, Danish Aziz, Asif Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Zafar Gohar, Faheem Ashraf, Aamer Yamin, Amad Butt, Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Hasan Ali, Usman Qadir, Zahid Mehmood

Everton to move for dream Onana replacement who Stones called "outrageous"

The Friedkin Group takeover is off and it has cast Everton's future back into a dark sea of doubt. Sean Dyche has welcomed Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye to the fold this summer but more is needed ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

There might be a feeling of uncharted waters up ahead but Everton are at least solid on the field; Dyche has implemented a resilient and robust sheen to his first team, safely avoiding relegation last season despite an eight-point deduction for financial breaches.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

While the general consensus is that improving the frontline is of paramount importance, recent developments in the centre of the park have called for attention, and the Toffees are focusing on signing a midfielder.

Everton lining up new midfielder

Speaking to Football Insider, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed that the Merseysiders will move to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Amadou Onana is close to signing for Aston Villa for a £50m fee, and while the Belgium international wasn't always a starting member of Dyche's team, he will need replacing, and Phillips might just be the man for the job.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The England international has struggled since leaving Leeds United two years ago, but with City keen to offload the 28-year-old, Everton could hand him a lifeline – one that might just work out for all parties.

What Kalvin Phillips could offer to Everton

Phillips signed for Manchester City in a £45m transfer in the summer of 2022, ending a career-long affinity with Leeds, having instrumentally led the Whites to the Premier League and thrived in a stunning debut top-flight campaign under Marcelo Bielsa's leadership. He's since been on a downward curve but has demonstrated his considerable ability at the highest level.

Kalvin Phillips for Leeds United

Lest we forget, Phillips was a seasoned Three Lions regular and Leeds linchpin, regarded as a “Rolls-Royce” of a player by journalist Josh Bunting before his Sky Blue nosedive.

His interminable period of inactivity at the Etihad Stadium saw him fall by the wayside but his botched loan spell with West Ham United across the second half of last season sent his stock into a more damaging spin, with an error-strewn and ineffective attempt in the middle of the park limiting him to a bit-part role.

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

But Phillips has plenty still in the tank and could unshackle himself from former struggles with a move to Merseyside, where he could reignite the fire in that 'Rolls-Royce' of an engine.

In the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, as Leeds stepped back into the top flight, Phillips excelled, ranking among the top 11% of midfielders for ball recoveries, the top 12% for tackles and the top 9% for blocks and clearances per 90, as per FBref.

His steely gusto was something to behold, offering a ball-playing prowess to partner his defensive qualities and altogether thriving as he arrested Gareth Southgate's attention and indeed Pep Guardiola's.

He earned acclaim after one performance at Goodison Park that year, with leading football journalist Henry Winter and pundit Jamie Carragher gushing over his all-encompassing style.

With Onana on the move, Everton are going to need to sign a tough and tenacious new midfielder, and Phillips – while flattering to deceive of late – could rekindle his verve as the Belgian's replacement.

How Onana compares to Phillips

Two years ago, Everton signed Onana from French club Lille in a £33m transfer after beating off West Ham United, and he has since chalked up 72 appearances, impressing with his steely displays.

Belgium's Amadou Onana

Journalist Antonio Mango has claimed that he "has all the attributes to become a real midfield powerhouse", marrying his formidable, sinewy stature with a defensive tenacity and sharp technicality.

Indeed, as per FBref, the 6 foot 1 midfielder ranked among the top 8% of central midfielders across Europe's top five leagues last season for tackles and the top 6% for aerial duels won per 90, so Everton clearly need a player of Phillips' quality and modus operandi.

As the table above highlights, Phillips at his best is a truly remarkable player, capable of performing with a complete approach unmatched by the lion's share of Premier League midfielders.

Take, for example, his creativity. In the 2020/21 top-flight campaign, Phillips completed 85% of his passes, which is the same completion rate as Onana last term. The difference? The one-times Whites stalwart was far more progressive, surgically splitting the lines and doubling the soon-to-be Aston Villa titan's rate of key passes.

Phillips' City teammate and countryman John Stones has gushed over his ball-playing skills too, speaking of his passing ability when asked what his best attribute is: “Easily his range of passing and how he’s always in the right place on the pitch, his positioning and some of the passes he plays [are] outrageous.”

Moreover, Phillips outshines Onana across almost every defensive metric. Onana is a more active dueler but this is in part due to his dominance aerially. The Citizens' midfielder stands at 5 foot 9 and is not known for his quality in that regard.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

The point of crucial importance is whether Dyche could rekindle the form and fluency that has been lost in the ether over the past few years. Phillips' decline, though, is circumstantial – a matter of situation, not skillset.

Signing the player would come with an element of risk, but Dyche's industrious demands could prove to be perfect for Phillips as he strives to get back on track.

Onana, let's not forget, only started 23 Premier League matches last season, so Phillips wouldn't be burdened with a task too weighty. It would take hard graft to win over the fanbase and prove that his talent is latent and not lost, but this could prove to be a shrewd signing on Merseyside, should Everton get it done.

Arsenal struck gold on amazing star who’s worth way more than Lamine Yamal

In the world of football, Arsenal have always been regarded as an excellent club for young and exciting talents.

Be that Jack Wilshere in the early 2010s or Cesc Fàbregas in the mid-2000s, the Gunners have had at least a couple of standout youngsters in every generation in recent history.

However, one club that has probably got them beat when it comes to producing incredible prodigies is Barcelona, who actually had Fabregas on the books at the world-renowned La Masia before he opted to move to North London.

cesc-fabregas-arsenal-academy-transfer-arteta-edu-jack-henry-francis-wilshere

In fact, the Catalan giants look to have done it again, as the latest wonderkid grabbing the headlines is another one of theirs, Lamine Yamal, and by all accounts, the hype seems justified.

The incredible Yamal

Despite being just 16 years old – yes, 16 – Yamal already has 51 first-team appearances for Barcelona under his belt, in which he has racked up a tally of seven goals and ten assists.

Primarily a right-winger, the incredible youngster made his debut for the Catalans on the left when he came off the bench with seven minutes to go against Real Betis in the 32nd game of the 2022/23 La Liga season.

He wouldn't play another minute of first-team football for the rest of the campaign, but was given his first start in the second game of last season against Cadiz and looked at home from the first whistle.

His stock was already reasonably high a month or so ago, but following his simply astounding performances for Spain at the Euros this summer, his reputation has gone stratospheric – especially after that wonder goal he scored against France on Tuesday.

This fairytale rise from unknown youth player to preeminent wonderkid in world football has understandably seen his valuation skyrocket, with the Transfermarkt now pricing him at around €90m, which converts to about £76m, although given his ceiling, we'd be surprised if that number doesn't keep ticking up at a rate of knots.

That said, as outlandish as his potential price tag is for someone so young, Arsenal have an academy graduate of their own whose value is even higher than that of Yamal's.

Bukayo Saka's valuation in 2024

The Hale End graduate in question is, of course, Bukayo Saka, who has carried the torch of Arsenal youngsters thriving in the first team – to put it mildly.

In fact, the 22-year-old has arguably become the most important player at the club in recent years, and the fact he's already racked up a mammoth 226 first-team appearances at such an age is a testament to that.

In those appearances, the "legend in the making", as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, has scored 58 goals and provided 53 assists, meaning he's averaged a goal involvement every 2.03 games.

He's not just dazzled at the Emirates, either. He's already picked up 32 caps for England, in which he's scored 12 goals – including that screamer against Switzerland – provided six assists, and won two Player of the Year awards.

This absurd CV for a player who is still just 22 has seen Transfermarkt value him at a massive €140m, which is about £118m.

However, like in the case of Yamal, the Gunners would probably demand close to double that before they even considered cashing in on their talismanic winger.

Ultimately, the Barça youngster looks set for a simply astonishing career at the top of the game, but Arsenal can be happy in the knowledge that they have their own homegrown superstar in Saka.

2020 IPL will be 'more secure' from corruption due to bubble

BCCI anti-corruption head still wary about corruptors using social media to contact players

Nagraj Gollapudi and Varun Shetty13-Aug-2020

The IPL “doesn’t need integrity officers this year” – Ajit Singh•BCCI

The 2020 IPL will be “comparatively more secure” from the influence of corruptors since the tournament will be played in a biosecure environment. That is the view of Ajit Singh, the head of BCCI’s anti-corruption unit [ACU], who said even though he was broadly confident about the tournament, he remained “wary” of the challenge posed by social media, a route through which corrupt approaches can be made to “compromise” a player. With India struggling to cope with Covid-19 pandemic, the BCCI has received the federal government’s approval to stage this year’s IPL in the UAE. The 53-day tournament will be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah between September 19 and November 10. Teams will arrive in the UAE from August 20.”One can’t say whether it is going to be the safest one, but definitely it is going to be better from the anti-corruption point of view because there is going to be no interaction between the teams, support staff and outsiders,” Singh told ESPNcricinfo on Thursday. “This season is going to be comparatively more secure. But, still, it is not (going to be) foolproof thing.”According to Singh, with all eight teams separated and living inside a biosecure bubble where their movements will not only be digitally monitored but severely restricted, the normal avenues available for corruptors to attempt making in-person contact will become non-existent.”They throng around the hotel, keep sitting in the hotel hobby, come as sponsors asking players to become brand ambassadors, which is basically a cover [for corrupt activity], so that sort of a thing would be avoided this time,” Singh said.ALSO READ: Corruptors using social media to get to players during lockdown, says ICCAt the same time, there remains a big challenge for the ACU – an invisible one at that. “Instead of person-to-person communication or direct face-to-face communication, there could be communication through social media,” Singh said. “If somebody approaches me on Facebook and then it starts as an innocent post coming from a fan, ultimately if you find that there is some possibility of being able to compromise the person you might make an attempt. So we have to continue with the [anti-corruption] education.”Another element, Singh pointed out, the ACU would be “wary about” was the betting industry. “We would be monitoring the betting market, how the betting market is going, does it give suspicious trends. And one has to keep the informers active and then also monitor social media.”No integrity officer, but each team to have two liaison officersSingh said that every team would have two security liaison officers [SLOs]. These SLOs are not part of the BCCI’s ACU, but hired by the watchdog. They will be staying at the team hotel and also travel to the venues for training and match day.Team integrity officers became a norm after the 2013 corruption scandal•Getty Images

The SLOs have replaced the team integrity officers, which became a norm after the 2013 IPL corruption scandal. An integrity officer is normally assigned to each team and acts as the point of contact to report any illegal approaches that cricketers may receive during the course of the tournament. But with the view that the design and protocols of the upcoming edition eliminating physical interactions outside the bubble, Singh said an integrity officer was not required.”We don’t need integrity officers this year, because there’s no interaction with the public as such, or fans. There’s no movement allowed outside of the bubble.”Singh also pointed out that the BCCI ACU, which has eight officers along with SLOs, was well-equipped to handle the tournament and did not need the presence of staff from ICC ACU team.Until the 2018 edition, the ICC’s ACU had been involved from time to time on a contractual basis, and had even stepped in for the part of Shakib Al Hasan investigation that involved his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018.
