THE BIGGER PICTURE
Now, the Belgium international has lifted the lid on his nightmare spell in west London, claiming that he was forced to change in the youth dressing rooms, and has also accused the Blues of trying to tarnish his image in the media.
WHAT LUKAKU SAID
Speaking to , he said: "I wasn't alone at Chelsea. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Hakim] Ziyech were also out of the project. They made us change in the youth locker room. It’s business, the club tells you it doesn’t want you anymore and often also where you’ll end up. But if you want to leave, even for serious reasons, you don’t have the option. They drag it out until the last moment, they wear you down.Â
"Clubs have relationships with the media, and it doesn’t take much to put a player in a difficult position or create the wrong image. Believe me, I’ve seen things I never thought I would. One day, I’d like to explain all of this to younger players, who is really working for them and who is working against them."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
According to stats gurus OptaJoe, Messi scored and assisted in 11 games that season, a record that you could easily see Salah breaking. So far the Liverpool forward has a whopping 24 goals and 15 assists in 26 Premier League games, plus three goals and four assists in seven Champions League appearances this term. In terms of attacking numbers, he's enjoying one of the most outstanding campaigns of the Premier League era.
DID YOU KNOW?
This isn't the only record Salah broke in the game against Villa; his 29th of the season in all competitions was also his 15th goal away from home, the most a Liverpool player has scored away from home in a single Premier League season. WHAT NEXT FOR SALAH?
Given his consistently outstanding performances this season, it seems remarkable that Salah could be leaving Liverpool in the summer. He's out of contract at the end of 2024/25 but Slot and the rest of the Liverpool hierarchy will surely do everything they can to keep him on the books beyond June. That being said, there's a chance he could sign off with a Premier League title, a Champions League win, and a raft of individual records broken — there's no better way to go than that.
The 2020 summer transfer window saw West Ham United make four permanent signings, along with two loan deals to bring six new players to the club. This also saw the Hammers let go of seven players on permanent deals, including the sale of Sebastian Haller for just £20m, despite signing him for £45m in 2019.
The biggest signing that summer was the addition of Said Benrahma from Brentford, who joined for a fee of around £20m plus add-ons. The Algerian made 155 appearances in his time at the club, scoring 24 goals, providing 20 assists, and totalling 8,720 minutes played.

But it was actually one of the departures that same season that upset club legend Mark Noble, who expressed his anger at one sale in particular.
West Ham's own Cazorla
West Ham sold Grady Diangana to West Brom in 2020, for a fee of around £18m. And Noble was quick to let his thoughts on this be known, writing “as captain of this football club, I’m gutted, angry and sad that Grady has left, great kid with a great future”.
Grady Diangana for West Ham.
Just two years earlier (2018), Manuel Pellegrini stated Diangana reminded him of a young Santi Cazorla, saying he had the potential to emulate the Arsenal legend:
As it proved, the winger made just 21 appearances for the West Ham first team, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
Since joining West Brom, Diangana has gone on to make 176 appearances for the club, netting 22 times, providing 19 assists, and totalling 10,232 minutes played. The 26-year-old has only played 420 minutes this season, yet to provide a goal or assist, and his value according to Transfermarkt is down at £3.3m.

Diangana ranks last in eight of the nine metrics analysed above, all of which are considered to be important metrics for wingers/attacking midfielders. The 26-year-old does rank highest for progressive passing, with 5.11 per 90, but he also ranks the lowest for key passes, with 0.43 per 90.
Bowen, who was signed just six months before Diangana’s departure, has the best output of all the wingers (both goals and assists), produces the highest xAG (expected assisted goals), and plays the most key passes per 90.
Jarrod Bowen scores for West Ham
Whilst at the time, Noble and many others were angry and upset about the sale of Diangana, it seems to have worked for the best, with West Ham now having the likes of Bowen, Kudus and Summerville on their books, all of which are valued significantly higher than the 26-year-old Diangana.

Defend a lot. Be clear on whether you’re playing back or forward. And stick around for a couple of sessions. This is West Indies’ batting game-plan for the second Test according to captain Kraigg Brathwaite. With the surface for the second Test expected to be even more spin-friendly than the first, West Indies’ batters technique and application seems set for another major examination.”The plan is to be clear in what you want to do. Believe that you can do it, and do it for long periods,” Brathwaite said. “We’ve got to have the discipline and the fight to do it for 50 overs – more than two sessions, or three sessions.”We had a lot of discussions. One important thing is that you’ve got to defend a lot of balls. Having a straight bat is one thing we discussed.  That’s very important. And sweeping as well – especially the offspinner. It’s just about being clear and confident about whether you’re playing forward or back.”West Indies’ only half-centurions in the first Test were Nkrumah Bonner and Joshua da Silva, who put up a 100-run stand in the second innings, rescuing the side from 18 for 6. Brathwaite said the remainder of the batters had drawn inspiration from that partnership.”Bonner and Josh showed that when you have a solid defence, if you put the effort and energy in, you’ll be successful. Sometimes when doubt comes in, you can slip up a bit. Just trust that defence. When the bad balls come you get runs. It’s important to have that clarity, as to what you want to do here.”In terms of how they were able to manoeuvre different balls, they were a very good example for us. As a batting group, it was good to see, and something to learn from.”West Indies have had a mixed 2021. They began with an excellent 2-0 victory in Bangladesh, before drawing two Tests at home against Sri Lanka. Their worst series was the 2-0 defeat at South Africa’s hands at home, before drawing a home series against Pakistan 1-1. Brathwaite outlined the importance of the next match: if they beat Sri Lanka, they would have won more matches in 2021 than they’ve lost.”To be honest we showed good progress in 2021. It was not a good series against South Africa, but we bounced back decent against Pakistan. In Bangladesh we won that series 2-0. Winning this game will be very crucial from a points perspective for the Test Championship. As a team we’ve made some strides. Once the group stays together and keeps building, that’s crucial.”

With the entire Indian squad and 12 of the 18 Australian players having only emerged from hard quarantine at the beginning of the week this was an important outing to tune up ahead of the internationals which start on Tuesday.Jhulan Goswami struck early when Alyssa Healy fell in the seventh over, but Haynes and Lanning then added 118 in 18 overs before the Indians struck back by taking 3 for 2 in six balls. Haynes (65 off 71) was run out and Ellyse Perry stumped in curious fashion when she played and missed but remained out of her crease with the keeper throwing down the stumps. Lanning (59 off 57) then became Yadav’s first wicket when she was stumped. The rebuild came from Mooney (59 off 52) and Ash Gardner as they added 63 for the fifth wicket. After Yadav had claimed two more scalps – those of Tahlia McGrath and Sophie Molineux – Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham gave a reminder of Australia’s batting depth by adding 37.Perry, who is expected to play a senior role in a pace attack lacking Megan Schutt and Tayla Vlaeminck, struck twice in her opening spell when she bowled Smriti Mandhana in the fourth over then had captain Mithali Raj brilliantly caught at slip by Mooney in the sixth.Shafali Verma ensured the Indians scored briskly, hitting five boundaries in a 21-ball 27, before becoming Campbell’s first wicket and when she struck again to remove Richa Ghosh it was four down inside 15 overs. The uncapped Yastika Bhatia produced an encouraging display with a run-a-ball 41 before falling to the left-arm spin of Molineux to leave the Indians 106 for 5.As the Australians rotated through 11 bowlers – there was no limit on the number of players who could be used – Vastrakar and Sharma added 89 in 21 overs. Hannah Darlington, who had impressed in the intra-squad game two days ago, went at under four an over in five overs while spinners Gardner, Wareham and Molly Strano were also economical. The teams will travel to Mackay on Sunday ahead of the first ODI on Tuesday. The multi-format tour, which will be played with the points-based system, also includes the day-night Test at Metricon Stadium followed by three T20Is.
Throughout the first few weeks of the season, it appeared that Everton’s transfer business during the summer wasn’t going to be good enough to see them retain their Premier League status.
Against Crystal Palace over the weekend, the 2-1 victory could certainly inject some confidence into the side as they aim to improve over the coming weeks.
Sean Dyche saw Orel Mangala impress during the game, controlling the midfield with ease as the Toffees claimed their first three points of the campaign.
Another summer arrival, Jesper Lindstrom, didn’t have the best of games, however, and he will have to perform better over the next few fixtures.
Jesper Lindstrom’s Everton stats
The attacking midfielder joined on loan from Serie A side Napoli in the summer as Dyche looked to add some more quality to his attacking department.
He has since played six times for the club, failing to score or assist in either the Premier League or EFL Cup.
The nadir of his spell at Goodison so far came against the Eagles when the summer acquisition was alarmingly substituted off at the half-time interval.

In the top flight, the Dane has succeeded with just 0.3 dribbles, created only one big chance and averaged 0.5 shots on target per game.
Of course, he is still in the embryonic stages of his spell on Merseyside, but these stats will have to improve if Dyche is to continue showing faith in the player.
There were other attacking talents on Dyche’s list throughout the window, with a current Championship starlet among them, and he would have made for a better signing than Lindstrom…
Everton missed out on Wilfried Gnonto this summer
Wilfried Gnonto attracted the interest of the Toffees throughout the summer, even going as far to make a bid for the Italian, although this was rejected by Leeds United.
They were still keen on luring him to Goodison at the start of August, but Dyche couldn’t get a move through in the end, settling for the underperforming Lindstrom instead of the £30m-rated Leeds star.
It could prove to be a costly mistake, especially when accounting for Gnonto’s impressive spell at at Elland Road to date.
One that got away
The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.
Since joining the club in 2022, he has played 80 games, scoring 15 goals and registering eight assists, despite not turning 21 until November.
In the Championship this season, the youngster has already registered three goal contributions, along with creating three big chances, averaging 0.9 key passes and succeeding with 1.4 dribbles in the second tier. He’s a livewire and accustomed to English football; he was ready to make an instant impact for Dyche’s side.
It appears as though he is doing everything possible to return the club to the top flight, which could see the market value soar of this “special” player – as he was described by former Leeds caretaker Michael Skubala.
If Leeds don’t achieve promotion this term, there is no doubt the Italian sensation will seek a move to the top flight, especially with the talent he possesses.
Have Everton missed the boat on the player? It certainly seems so.
