Hundred will help England's bid to retain World Cup – Joe Root

Captain also rejects suggestions new competition poses a threat to England’s Test aspirations

Joe Root has insisted that the introduction of the Hundred will help England in their bid to retain the World Cup in 2023.Some have suggested that the new competition will reduce England’s competitiveness in ODI cricket as their leading white-ball players will no longer be available for the domestic 50-over tournament, which is scheduled at the same time as the Hundred. But Root feels the benefits of exposing young English players to some of the best overseas players in the world will outweigh any such issues.”By playing the Hundred, you’re exposing our next generation of players to play against some of the best players in the world,” Root told ESPNcricinfo. “Regardless of the format that will be more influential and have more of an impact.”Look at the guys in the current white-ball team who have gone off to play in the IPL: they’ve come back better players for it. I feel the Hundred will have a similar impact on more English players. Not just the top end guys, but on the next group of players that are on the fringe of the international teams. And, on the back of it, they’ll have more opportunity to play elsewhere, too.”Of course it’s important we look after our 50-over cricket and, long-term, don’t let it slide off a cliff. But I don’t think playing the Hundred will dilute our chances of winning the next World Cup.”Root also refutes the suggestion that the Hundred poses a threat to England’s Test aspirations. While the window created for the competition means the Championship will be played disproportionately in the margins of the summer – a scenario which all too often leads to conditions providing copious assistance to the sort of seam bowlers who find little encouragement on the better surfaces generally encountered in Test cricket – England’s Test captain feels the county groundsmen simply have to do a better job of creating high quality surfaces. County groundsmen, recovering from the longest season in history, could be forgiven for shaking their heads ruefully and wondering how they can be expected to produce good batting surfaces in the drizzle of early April.”The key is making sure the wickets for Championship cricket are good,” Root said. “Some of the wickets have not been good enough this season. We have to make sure we’re producing wickets that allow guys to get in and make big scores.”You want the next group of batters to know what’s it’s like to score big hundreds; to deal with scoreboard pressure; to bat for two days to stay in a game and earn a dull draw. And you also have to find a way to take wickets – to take 20 wickets – on flat ones.”I’d like to see wickets improve. And that ultimately comes down to the counties. I know they’re under huge pressure to win but, from a purely selfish point of view, I think it would be really good for English cricket if we saw better wickets next season.”

Big club now set to make new offer to sign "intelligent" Southampton player

Whilst Southampton battle to earn promotion to the Premier League after an impressive Championship campaign at times, they could be set to lose one of their biggest talents on a permanent basis this summer for a cheaper price than initially believed.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints have already made history under Russell Martin this season, securing their longest-ever unbeaten run, but still sit two points behind both Ipswich Town and Leeds United in the race to secure automatic promotion. By the end of the season, the last thing that Southampton will want to be doing is thinking about what might have been after such an impressive period of form.

If they do fail to go up, those at St Mary's could be forced to watch on as key players depart too. They managed to keep hold of the likes of Che Adams and Adam Armstrong last summer, but may not be so fortunate for a second season running in the Championship. On top of that, the Saints now seem increasingly likely to lose Carlos Alcaraz, who left on loan to Juventus in the January transfer window.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

With a reported buy option of €50m (£43m) inserted into the deal, Southampton may have been expecting a big pay out. However, according to CalcioMercato, Juventus now want to make a new offer for Alcaraz, which would be lower than the buy option this summer in a fresh twist. It remains to be seen whether Southampton will accept the lower fee though, given the hefty option initially inserted in the midfielder's loan deal.

That said, if they fail to secure promotion this season, then they may be left with no choice but to sanction Alcaraz's departure to such a big club this summer.

"Intelligent" Alcaraz has three months to impress Juventus

Alcaraz was certainly left pleased with his loan move to the Italian giants, saying via the club's official website: "I can only be pleased to have been associated with great champions of Juventus's history. I know I have to do well, I want my name to be remembered here.

"As a kid my inspiration was Cristiano Ronaldo, so wearing this shirt is a dream come true. I always chose Juventus when I played PlayStation, if they didn't let me I got angry. Arturo Vidal was a huge success in black and white, the comparison with him flatters me. My task now is to work according to my potential, I want to achieve great results. I just have to think about myself."

The midfielder has so far featured just twice for Juventus in Serie A, coming from the bench in a 1-0 loss against Inter Milan and a 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona.

As the season goes on, the 21-year-old will hope to get more and more opportunities to impress, as he looks to secure a permanent move to the European giants. Once described as "intelligent" by Carlton Palmer, Southampton will certainly miss his quality if he completes a departure this summer.

The top 25 Championship players’ salaries (highest weekly wages)

The Premier League may well be the peak of English football, but the Championship is also regarded as one of the best leagues in Europe, and there is plenty of money on offer in the second tier.

With relegated sides having the luxury of parachute payments, there are a number of big earners who end up remaining on the books, and we've looked into the salaries of the top earners in the Championship.

Highest Championship wage bills Leicester City – £1.1m-a-week

The Foxes comfortably top the table when it comes to salaries and are the only side in the Championship to pay a total above £1m-a-week.

As mentioned, Jamie Vardy and summer signing Harry Winks are earning huge weekly salaries at the King Power Stadium, but 14 players are actually picking up a pay packet greater than £40,000-a-week, showing the huge gap in financial power between Leicester and the majority of the division.

Southampton – £773,000-a-week

Southampton sold some star players last summer after being relegated, including James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia, who joined West Ham and Chelsea. However, the Saints managed to keep hold of the likes of Joe Aribo, Stuart Armstrong, Adam Armstrong and Jan Bednarek.

They also brought in winger David Brooks from Bournemouth on loan in January, taking their total weekly wage bill to almost three-quarters of a million pounds.

Leeds United – £694,000-a-week

As expected, the most recently relegated teams from the Premier League top the charts in the second tier, with Leeds United taking third spot. The Whites lost a number of their players on loan over the summer due to relegation release clauses, however, they kept hold of the likes of Georginio Rutter, Patrick Bamford and Dan James.

There was a change of ownership, a new manager in Daniel Farke and a number of new signings brought in over the summer, with Leeds forking out almost £700,000-a-week on their playing squad at Elland Road.

West Bromwich Albion – £455,000-a-week

Another club who are used to the highs and lows of promotion and relegation in recent years are West Brom. The Baggies, now under new ownership at The Hawthorns, didn't splash the cash last summer on transfer fees but have one of the biggest books when it comes to salaries.

In total, 12 players of Carlos Corberan's squad pick up more than £20,000-a-week, with Adam Reach the top earner on £40,000-a-week.

Norwich City – £400,000-a-week

Norwich City have been promoted and relegated on a number of occasions over the last 10 years, becoming one of the specialist 'yo-yo' clubs. They were last in the Premier League in 2022, and now, under David Wagner, are pushing for yet another promotion.

The Canaries, as a result, are one of the clubs who can pay a high salary in the division, with centre-back Ben Gibson their highest earner on £40,000-a-week.

Marcus Rashford told he deserved to miss out on Euro 2024 as Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag admits forward was 'lacking' in disappointing season in Premier League

Ten Hag feels Rashford deserved to miss out on EurosAttacker displayed inconsistent performances for Man UtdScored just eight goals across all competitionsWHAT HAPPENED?

After displaying stellar form in Ten Hag's first season in charge at Old Trafford, Rashford had an underwhelming outing in the 2023/24 campaign where he managed to score just eight goals and provide five assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

His poor form across the season led to him being dropped from the England squad for the ongoing Euro 2024. While Southgate's decision took aback a section of the fans, the Red Devils manager felt it was only fair that he was left out of the squad after such an average display.

WHAT ERIK TEN HAG SAID

Speaking on NOS, the 54-year-old said, "Grealish and Rashford were both lacking this season. And when you are lacking, you risk not getting picked for your country."

'Entertainment, baby!' – TST 2024 is a spectacle of American soccer culture, so let's embrace it

The spectacle that is TST 2024 is set to highlight much of what American soccer culture is about – embrace it!

The summer of soccer is upon us. The United States is a blossoming hotbed for the world's game, and there's a soccer cultural revolution underway. The U.S. is hosting this summer's Copa America, and that will be followed by another thrilling version of the Leagues Cup and then the inaugural NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup.

All of that is happening domestically, not to mention U.S. fans also paying close attention to the Euros and the Paris Olympic Games taking place over the next three months.

With all of that as a backdrop, there's a brewing explosion of American soccer culture ready to start things off, and it's called The Soccer Tournament.

This is the second edition of the 7v7 tournament, with two $1M cash prizes on the line in respective men's and women's divisions, not to mention bragging rights for the winners.

It's truly a sensational event – and it's also what American soccer is all about. So often, the American game is compared to the history-drenched version played throughout Europe. So often, there are ridiculous questions asked about why things are so different in the US.

The answer is simple: American soccer is , and European soccer is – they are two inherently different entities that can coexist, and that's OK to say aloud and accept.

TST is the perfect example of it, and the exact reason why we should embrace what makes the U.S. game different. Argentina legend Sergio Aguero, Manchester United hero Luis Nani, ESPN personality Pat McAfee, ex-NFL superstar J.J. Watt, former U.S. internationals Sacha Kljestan and Jimmy Conrad, among hundreds of other players – they're all going head-to-head this summer in Cary, N.C. Where else would you find such a fun and eclectic soccer spectacle?

And that's just the men's division. The inaugural women's division at TST also has its own $1M cash prize and the likes of Ali Krieger, Heather O'Reilly and Kealia Watt are all fighting for it.

TST 2024 is a true representation of American soccer culture: Celebrity-driven, simultaneously competitive and silly, always entertaining, and made for the fans.

Conrad, captain of Kwik Goal FC and playing in in the tournament for a second straight year, sat down with GOAL to share what makes this tournament so special and how it's helping American soccer craft its own narrative.

  • Conradinho's return

'Conradinho,' who accumulated more than 300 career appearances over his storied career across MLS with the San Diego Flash, San Jose Earthquakes and Kansas City's MLS franchises, played in the inaugural year of TST alongside longtime friend and fellow former U.S. international DaMarcus Beasley with the club Conrad and Beasley.

Although Beasley isn't returning with Conrad this year, the ex-defender is back in 2024, but with his club rebranded as Kwik Goal FCConrad is ready to take lessons learned and burst onto the stage in year two.

A big reason for the 47-year-old's return, though, is to enjoy the full TST experience.

  • The Soccer Tournament

    Entertainment baby!

“I see entertainment first and everything else second," Conrad said in describing TST. "And I still feel like the professional leagues, especially in the States, and I'm thinking more about MLS, USL, NWSL – they all could fall into it. I wish that we (US Soccer) leaned (more) into the entertainment side of the game.

"Now, obviously there are areas of that, right? The state of the stadium experience, how the fan feels when they walk into the stadium, that type of stuff. I get all that. But I still wish there was a little bit of a WWE-type element to the game. Because let's be honest, if I was coaching in MLS – and let's say I was with one of my former clubs, Sporting Kansas City – and before our game against Real Salt Lake, I go and I say, very WWE-like, 'I don't like anybody in Salt Lake City, I actually think it's the worst city in America'

"Do you know how many people would show up to that game to give me sh*t? It would be unbelievable, and there would be this palpable tension, and the game would have something different, a feel to it."

TST, for Conrad, brings everything together that American soccer culture should be – and it’s the perfect testing ground for US Soccer to reach new fans ahead of a five-year span of massive events surrounding the game on US soil. The tournament is leaning into an audience that may not exactly see soccer as their favorite sport, but want to learn about the game and enjoy the thrill factor it brings.

“Not to say that TST is doing that directly," Conrad said, "but I think, because it comes at the sport in more of an entertaining way, not only with the field size, but really with target score time at the end. Like every game is going to end with a golden goal. And even if all is lost over the first 40 minutes, the two halves, you still have a chance. You can be down 11 -0. You just got to score the next 12 goals and you've got a chance."

And in a country with such a depth of fandom across so many professional sports and leagues, that extra spice that TST brings appeals to the uniquely American sporting appetite.

“I think that also taps into the kind of hero complex that we as Americans have," Conrad said. "The true underdog story, it taps into that. So there's a lot of elements of this that I think make it have that edge that maybe sometimes the professional game lacks, not only here in the States, but just around the world. You give it that target score time and it adds that element of the golden goal. It is truly entertainment first.

"I think entertainment is what (TST) is really generated or built around. And they should lean into that and continue to lean into it., 'cause that's where I think they can continue to carve out their space in the whole landscape of the game."

  • Accessibility

One of the reasons the former US international believes the tournament is so fascinating is the humanity of the event. Being close to the action and interacting with players, fans live what TST is really about – a tournament for them.

“Another thing I will add about TST in person is that everybody's super accessible," Conrad said. "Whereas as the pro game continues to evolve … It still feels kind of grassroots, right? We're still building this thing together … and maybe that comes after it gets more mature in 10 years where it'll be a little bit harder to get closer to the star players.

"But last year I was rubbing shoulders with Cesc Fabregas, which, I know Cesc, so it's not as big of a deal, but he's just walking back and forth out in the open. The fact that someone of his stature was that accessible blew my mind then and kind of blows my mind now talking about it out loud."

The former Chelsea, Barcelona and Arsenal ace played for Como FC in 2023, and although the recently-promoted Italian club are back in 2024, the Spaniard is not competing. However, the stars are out in full-force again this year at TST, and it has fans – including Conrad – buzzing.

    Celebrity power

The 2024 edition of the tournament has headline celebrity players such as Watt and McAfee, both of whom are former NFL stars. Watt is a co-owner of Burnley FC in England, and he'll be playing for the Clarets men's squad. McAfee, meanwhile, is an ESPN media personality with a large following – and he's set to not only play, but host his Pat McAfee Show live on the ground at TST.

“When you think about who's going to be there this time around," Conrad says, "when you're adding more entertainment with Pat McAfee, you're adding J.J. Watt, you're adding different stars from different sports to come in and participate. I think that raises the stakes in a fun way."

The addition of the former NFL players, along with fellow returnee Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson among countless others, is a positive not only for TST, but for soccer as a whole in the US, Conrad argues.

"When you bring in celebrities to kind of cross the line into the sport, one, I think they can clearly see that there's buzz building around what's happening here in the US for all the events that you mentioned that are upcoming," he said. "And just in general, I think what it does, and maybe TST is doing the legwork a little bit here for US soccer, but you're raising the visibility. You're making the game cooler."

Bangladesh’s biggest player will be missing from the team’s official World Cup picture – and all because he’d left the ground before the photo session

Bangladesh’s biggest player will be missing from the team’s official World Cup picture – and all because he’d left the ground before the photo session took place. It’s left the picture with a legend-sized hole and also left the BCB president fairly angry about it.Shakib Al Hasan, who had arrived in Dhaka on Sunday and had come to the Shere Bangla National Stadium to report to the team management, apparently left before the team gathered for the photo on the outfield. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that he came to know Shakib was informed of the team’s schedule on what was officially the final day of training in Dhaka, before the team’s departure for Dublin, to play a tri-series against Ireland and West Indies, on May 1. And with the players getting Tuesday off, the BCB had crammed all their programmes, including the captain’s press conference, team lunch with the president and directors, the photo sessions and other commercial-related work for Monday.”It is disappointing, what else can I say?” Hassan said. “It was the team’s photo session. I came and asked about him. I didn’t know he had arrived last night. I called him, and he said he is going to come to my house at night. I said to him to come to the ground. He said I have already left. I asked everyone here, and they said Shakib was informed of the photo session. He didn’t turn up for training but we hoped for his presence in the photo session. But he wasn’t here.”I think the rest of the team is used to it. What else can I say? I think it is his misfortune that he couldn’t be in the team photo before the team leaves for the World Cup. There’s no question about [giving him too much leeway]. The team is leaving day after tomorrow, so we don’t want to talk too much about it. But it is definitely disappointing.”Shakib didn’t respond to ESPNcricinfo’s message regarding the BCB chief’s reaction.Despite having some run-ins with the BCB on several other issues, Shakib is not known to have missed any official team photos or similar affairs in the past.

Fornals benched in 4 changes for West Ham’s predicted lineup vs Bristol

West Ham United enjoyed a fantastic festive period in the Premier League with some notable wins over Manchester United and Arsenal to help give the Irons faithful something to celebrate as they bid farewell to one of the best years in the club's history.

David Moyes will be hoping that his side can start 2024 like they ended 2023, with a win, and in the process booking their place in the next round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

However, to do that, they will have to avoid an upset against Championship side Bristol City, who will be looking to bounce back after they lost 1-0 to Millwall on New Year's Day.

West Ham can sign the perfect Ward-Prowse partner in 22 y/o "midfield destroyer"

The 22-year-old could shore up the Hammers’ midfield for a decade.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 4, 2024

With Championship opposition comes the possibility of rotating the squad, although with no other game until the 21st of January, Moyes won't want to make too many unforced changes.

That said, he's likely to make four changes to his starting XI from the recent stalemate with Brighton and Hove Albion, especially with a few injuries and absences caused by the Africa Cup of Nations.

1 GK – Łukasz Fabiański

Fabianski celebrates Conference League title with West Ham

The first change comes between the sticks, where Alphonse Areola makes way for FA Cup winner and cup keeper, Łukasz Fabiański.

The Polish shot-stopper has already won this competition, starting for Arsenal when they beat Hull City 3-2 to claim the title in 2014.

Fabiański was also excellent for the Irons when he took over from Areola for a few weeks following the Frenchman's wrist injury.

2 RB – Vladimír Coufal

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

Right-back brings another change, as Vladimir Coufal comes in to take his position back from Ben Johnson, although the young Englishman still features in this XI.

Coufal has been ever present in the Irons' defence this season, starting 95% of the side's Premier League matches and only missing the game against Brighton due to the Flu.

3 CB – Konstantinos Mavropanos

Keeping his place at right centre-back is the Greek titan, Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The former Arsenal defender started against the Seagulls last week due to Kurt Zouma suffering a knee injury, and with the Frenchman still sidelined, Mavropanos looks set to start.

4 CB – Angelo Ogbonna

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna.

Also keeping his place at the heart of the defence is former Juventus centre-back, Angelo Ogbonna.

The Italian started in place of a sick Nayef Aguerd against Arsenal last month, and now that the Moroccan has left for AFCON, Ogbonna looks set to keep his place.

5 LB – Ben Johnson

West Ham defender Ben Johnson.

Johnson keeps his place in the starting XI for Sunday, but he doesn't maintain his position.

With Coufal returning to the side, the Englishman will move out to the left side of defence and replace Emerson Palmieri.

The Italian-Brazilian full-back has been fantastic for the Hammers this season, but with the level of the opposition being what it is on the weekend, Moyes has the chance to rest one of his most important players while giving some more minutes to a squad player.

It's a win-win.

6 DM – Edson Alvarez

Edson Alvarez.

The first of the holding midfielders is former Ajax star Edson Alvarez.

The Mexican international was once again given the nod against Brighton, and with him starting 80% of the side's Premier League games, it seems almost guaranteed that he will start against Bristol.

7 DM – Tomas Soucek

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

The man starting next to Alvarez is another ever-present member of the team, Czech international Tomas Soucek.

The 28-year-old has started even more league games than his midfield partner – 90% – and is a vital cog in Moyes' machine, so he will start on Sunday.

8 RM – Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen West Ham

The right of midfield brings with it another positional switch, as Jarrod Bowen moves back out wide to be more heavily involved in a game that the Irons are expected to dominate.

The former Hull City star has arguably been the Irons' best player this season, with 11 goals and two assists to his name in just 19 Premier League starts.

If there is one player in particular that Bristol have to be concerned about, it's Bowen.

9 CAM – James Ward-Prowse

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

Another player with a strong argument for being West Ham's most important this season is James Ward-Prowse, who keeps his place in the XI.

The former Southampton captain has started 100% of the club's Premier League games this season, scoring three goals and providing six assists along the way.

There might be some who argue that Moyes should perhaps rest a player who is clearly so pivotal to his system.

However, with just how important a good FA Cup run could be for this team, it doesn't quite seem worth the risk to leave him on the bench.

10 LM – Maxwel Cornet

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet.

With this being a third-round FA Cup tie against a Championship team, there will always be a few players on the periphery who are given a start, and this game will be no different, with Maxwel Cornet coming in for Saïd Benrahma.

The Ivorian winger has made just one league appearance for the Irons this season. Still, with Lucas Paqueta out injured and Mohammed Kudus at AFCON, it's the perfect time to give the former Burnley player a runout.

Described as "dangerous" by Ian Wright on Match of the Day, the 27-year-old must grab this opportunity with both hands if he wants more starts in the future.

Duckett's 70* gives England Lions thrilling one-wicket win

Chasing only 122, England Lions were reduced to 95 for 8 before Duckett saw them through

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jan-2019In what was a grand-stand finish to the five-match one-day series, Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 70 steered England Lions past the 122-run target with one wicket to spare to deny India A a whitewash. At 114 for 9, England Lions were still eight runs away, but No. 11 Tom Bailey and Duckett survived six overs together before Duckett hit the winning six for a consolation win.India A captain Ankit Bawne chose to bat in the morning in Thiruvananthapuram but opener KL Rahul’s rut continued, as he was bowled for a duck to Lewis Gregory on the first ball of the match. Bawne, too, fell for a duck in the 10th over.Jamie Overton then struck twice in one over to dismiss Rishabh Pant (7) and Siddhesh Lad (36) to reduce India A to 48 for 5, and it was only due to a patient 52-ball 23 from Axar Patel and a run-a-ball 21 from Deepak Chahar that ensured the hosts were not bundled out for under 100.Deepak then took three wickets – including that of captain Sam Billings – in his first spell to reduce England Lions to 43 for 4. A 44-run partnership between Duckett and Steven Mullaney (8) then followed, before legspinner Rahul Chahar and Axar combined to reduce them from 87 for 4 to 95 for 8. Duckett’s 86-ball innings, however, saw England Lions through. The sides will now meet for the two-match unofficial Test series in February in Wayanad, Kerala.

Moyes drops Paqueta & unleashes "enigma" in predicted West Ham lineup vs Fulham

West Ham United extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four games after an impressive victory over Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur last time out, a late James Ward-Prowse rebound effort winning the game for the Hammers 2-1.

The Hammers getting the better of a charitable Spurs side slipping up once more in the league means David Moyes' men are now only four points shy of a top-four place, with Fulham now up next at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Despite confidence coursing through the east London side's veins at this moment in time, Moyes could be tempted to tweak his line-up slightly for West Ham's short trip over to West London tomorrow.

Here is the West Ham predicted XI, with Lucas Paqueta potentially dropping out…

1 GK – Łukasz Fabiański

Fabianski celebrates Conference League title with West Ham

Fabiański filled in last time out in the absence of usual first-team goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, the Frenchman sidelined with an injury.

It looks as if the former Paris St.Germain man won't be back for the clash at Craven Cottage either, meaning the 38-year-old reserve goalkeeper will more than likely start again at Fulham.

Fabiański was crucial at points away at Spurs to ensure his team didn't concede more than one goal, making five saves in total, as per Sofascore.

2 RB – Vladimir Coufal

West Ham's Czech right-back continues to be a pivotal player for his team, notching up five assists this season already from defence.

Coufal did have an off-day by his standards against Spurs – only winning two of his seven duels in the away win – but it shouldn't be enough for Moyes to axe the 31-year-old from his starting eleven.

3 CB – Kurt Zouma

Kurt-Zouma

Hammers captain Kurt Zouma performed competently against Tottenham to ensure his team got over the line, clearing the ball away twice from danger in the game when the home side looked like breaching the West Ham defence.

The towering defender did win zero of his duels in the game in what will be a disappointing statistic for the ex-Chelsea man to look at, but Moyes should keep the French defender in his line-up for Fulham tomorrow.

4 CB – Nayef Aguerd

Zouma's centre-back partner Nayef Aguerd was the brighter of the two central defenders in the game at Spurs, the Moroccan battler winning all of his ground duels on the night.

Moreover, West Ham's £30m man did the dirty work required of him with seven clearances and four tackles registered in a game that saw the Hammers number 27 successfully nullify the likes of Heung-Min Son foraying forward.

5 LB – Emerson Palmieri

Emerson West Ham

The main stand-out defender from a resilient Hammers back four was however Emerson Palmieri, the Italian left-back missing only one match under Moyes this season in the league and for good reason.

West Ham's number 33 won eight of his 12 attempted ground duels at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last time out, a key figure when Tottenham ramped up the pressure in attack.

This is just a snippet of how important Palmieri has become for the Hammers this season, completing 4.6 ball recoveries per game on average as a vital tireless body down the flanks.

6 CM – Tomas Soucek

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek.

Tomas Soucek has been a fan favourite for some time now in east London, joining from Slavia Prague in 2020 and never looking back.

This season, Soucek continues to be a reliable figure in the middle of the park for Moyes' men as was displayed by his performance versus Postecoglou's side – intercepting the ball four times in total while playing the role of a brute enforcer.

The Czech midfielder will hope he can add another goal to his ever-increasing Premier League tally of four this season away at Craven Cottage, Soucek one strike away from 30 all-time Hammers goals.

7 CM – James Ward-Prowse

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

Another player in midfield who has gone on leaps and bounds since leaving their old club behind is Ward-Prowse, the ex-Southampton hero now a decisive match-winner for the Irons in the top-flight as was seen in the narrow Spurs away victory.

This isn't the only goal Ward-Prowse has scored this season, the creative 29-year-old has three goals this season for Moyes' men on top of his astounding ten assists helping the Hammers pull off some impressive victories.

Whilst Soucek operates as an anchor-style figure in the midfield three, the ex-Saints man is allowed to roam more freely and helps the Hammers unlock stern opposition defences with his flair and trickery.

8 CM – Edson Álvarez

Edson-Alvarez-in-action-for-West-Ham-United

Signed this summer from Ajax for a substantial £35.4m fee, Edson Álvarez hasn't let the hefty price tag get the better of him since relocating to the London Stadium.

Álvarez had a quiet game against Tottenham last match, but his understated approach in the game was still useful. Only amassing 30 touches in the contest, his composure on the ball was almost faultless when he did find himself in possession – rarely hitting a pass wayward, misplacing two passes all night.

Moyes will retain the former Eredivisie player in his lineup for the short trip to the Craven Cottage, the Mexican midfielder going under the radar at his new club.

9 RW – Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen has been a prolific hero in front of goal for his employers this campaign, already finding the back of the net nine times from 14 appearances in the top flight.

Bowen originally joined the Hammers as an unknown entity from Hull City after an impactful spell with the Tigers, but now he is a crucial figure in his manager's plans week in, week out.

His instinctive finish against Spurs helped his team level the scores at 1-1, a crucial strike that paved the way for Ward-Prowse to score a golden chance late on to win the game.

10 ST – Mohammed Kudus

With Michail Antonio still ruled out of contention for the away game at Fulham, Moyes will more than likely persist with Mohammed Kudus as a lone unorthodox striker.

Kudus didn't really ever spark into life mid-week, only registering two shots on goal as a makeshift forward presence.

Yet, with a lack of options for Moyes to call upon from the bench to play as an out-and-out centre forward minus an ageing Danny Ings, the Scottish manager will hope the former Ajax man can be more of a lively nuisance against Marco Silva's men up top.

For his former employers in Amsterdam, Kudus did infrequently play as a centre-forward and scored nine times playing there. Could he break his striker duck for the Hammers tomorrow?
