WHAT HAPPENED?
Andersen thought he had put his country 1-0 up with a clinical finish into the corner but was ruled out by VAR for a tight offside in the build-up. Andersen's misfortune was deepened only further when Germany went down the other end and David Raum's cross skimmed the outstretched arm of the Danish defender. Both decisions were given by VAR and fans were unhappy in the circumstances in which Germany led an already disrupted game.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING
Anthony Page led the outrage and posted on X saying: "That’s an absolute f*cking joke of a penalty decision!"
@liamcorless agreed: "That's an outrageous penalty decision".
Robin Wigglesworth posted: "Cheapest handball penalty in a long time."
Steve added: "Gotta feel for Denmark there. How in the f*ck is that handball? Anywhere else on the pitch that's not even a free kick. What's the defender meant to do with this arms there when the ball is kicked from that distance?"
@jonloveridge83 wants a review of VAR: "A good 5 minutes of how absurd the offside and handball rules are currently, especially when you overlay VAR onto them. Neither fit for purpose. Start again."
Corey is also sick of VAR. He tweeted: "Never offside down the one end, never a penalty down the other! VAR is the topic of conversation once again!"
THE BIGGER PICTURE
English referees and VAR have once again stolen the headlines for their intervention into the game. Should Denmark have gone 1-0 up, the game would have changed completely. Instead, the Germans took the lead through Kai Havertz's incredibly composed penalty before Jamal Musiala was sent through and placed a cool finish into the corner.

Leeds United are yet to welcome their first reinforcement in the January transfer window, but reports suggest that the 49ers could now finally make their winter move to land a Premier League edition. With Daniel Farke's side fighting for Championship promotion, this could quickly prove to make all the difference.
Leeds United transfer news
The transfer rumours have arrived even in the face of a quiet January window at Elland Road. The Whites have been linked with moves for the likes of Liverpool's young right-back Calvin Ramsay after his earlier loan spell at Preston North End came to an end, as well as Tottenham Hotspur's Ben Davies in what would be an impressive move given his experience at the top level.
The Yorkshire club's quiet window so far will be no shock to Farke, who admitted at the start of the month: "I expect a much more quiet and calm January to the last transfer period for example. We wish for a quiet January, but won’t fall asleep and when there are decisions to make, we will also make decisions and you never know what happens."

The Elland Road outfit are seemingly seeking to bolster their ranks with a new attacking addition this month.

As the window approaches the latter stages, however, it looks as though the 49ers could finally spring into action. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Leeds have made their first move for Ryan Giles, enquiring to Luton Town over a potential deal to sign the left-back as part of a 'late-transfer blitz' at Elland Road. The rumours have seemingly developed from initial interest to Leeds now making a first move for the defender.
Giles has struggled for minutes at Luton this season and could now be allowed to complete a loan move for the sake of earning more game-time. Meanwhile, Leeds could prioritise a left-back and a right-back this month following the termination of Djed Spence's loan deal and Luke Ayling leaving for Middlesbrough.
"Fantastic" Giles could play a part in Leeds' promotion push
Currently as many as seven points adrift of the second automatic promotion spot currently occupied by Ipswich Town and sitting fourth, Leeds are in need of a January boost in the form of reinforcements, and Giles could be among those to arrive. The left-back has enjoyed previous stints in the Championship at Middlesborough, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers, meaning that he could be more than capable of stepping into the level at Elland Road.
It was at Cardiff that Giles left many impressed, including former teammate Marlon Pack, who praised his debut performance, saying via Wales Online:
"He has got a fantastic delivery. He is someone who offers something that little bit different in the team that we were maybe lacking before. I think we will complement him, too. The way he gets the ball out of his feet and puts it in [the box] with so much venom and pace.
"In fairness, he was lucky today to get only the one assist, because he has put in some great balls and we were unlucky not to score a few more from his deliveries. He will be a fantastic asset to us. He's a young lad who's learning but he's got undoubted ability and it's down to us, our senior players, to make sure he delivers and to back him up during the games."

Despite the season already being a success, the boss is keen to add a couple of new additions to the squad in January.
Aston Villa’s search for an attacker
According to talkSPORT, Jonathan Rowe is a target for Aston Villa this transfer window with the Midlands side having 'clocked onto' his outstanding performances in the Championship so far this season.
Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.
However, they will not be alone in their quest for the attacker, with West Ham reportedly also interested.
Furthermore, David Wagner is confident of keeping hold of his star man this January.

Many top sides in the Premier League often overlook signing players from the Championship, but Villa knows how effective that strategy can be, with Ollie Watkins being the prime example of that.

The striker joined from Brentford in the summer of 2020 for £28m, and his move has been nothing short of successful, as the striker has netted 57 goals and registered 23 assists in 145 appearances.
Therefore, Emery could look to repeat that Watkins trick by acquiring another star from the Championship this season in the form of Rowe.
The 20-year-old winger only played in three matches last season for Norwich, but since scoring in all his first five matches of this campaign, he has arguably become one of the first names on the team sheet, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig having described his performances as "amazing."
Rowe is a versatile star who can comfortably play across the attack, which fits in with Emery’s likeness for having tactically flexible individuals. Nonetheless, the table below shows a handful of his stats from this season and how he compares to positionally similar players in the second tier.

Rowe happens to be Norwich’s top scorer this season with 11 goals in the Championship, five more than the second-highest, Adam Idah. This equates to 0.57 goals per ninety minutes on average, which ranks in the top two percentile for attackers in the league.
The Englishman has outperformed his xG and his goals/shot ratio is also in the top six percentile of positionally similar Championship players, highlighting the fact that he is a clinical finisher.
The Canaries ace is extremely hard-working off the ball, performing his defensive duties to a high standard, as shown by his tackles, tackles in the middle third of the pitch and his high touches in the defensive third metrics.
This attribute, along with his goal-scoring prowess, has drawn comparisons to Sadio Mane by Kulig, as the former Liverpool icon was known for his work off the ball and famously scoring 120 goals in 269 games for the Merseyside club.
The hunger to be relentless off the ball would make Rowe slot perfectly into Emery’s intense system and philosophy, and the ability to play as an inverted midfielder, a winger, and a number ten makes him a valuable player to have. It would be a smart signing that wouldn’t be overly expensive.
Everton are on a poor run of form at the moment, having failed to win in five games in all competitions, including three consecutive defeats in the Premier League.
The Toffees are lacking goals up top and only five teams in England’s top-flight have scored fewer times than the Merseyside club this term, but manager Sean Dyche may look to rectify this issue before the January transfer window closes.
Nevertheless, having spent £25.75m on Beto in the summer, the Everton board are unlikely to splash more money on a new frontman this winter, although Dyche could add goals elsewhere.
Everton transfer news – Scott McTominay
According to FootballTransfers, Everton are hoping to manoeuvre a deal with Manchester United which would see Scott McTominay moving to Goodison Park, with Amadou Onana heading in the opposite direction. The outlet are claiming that the Merseysiders are hamstrung by FFP regulations so a swap deal may be beneficial for all parties.
It was reported by The Athletic during the summer that the Toffees were interested in signing the Scotland international but the Red Devils were said to be holding out for a £40m fee which made a deal with any club difficult.
Incidentally, McTominay has gone on to become United’s joint-top scorer this season with six goals in what has been a dismal campaign so far for the English giants. However, a move to Everton may now finally be on the cards.
Scott McTominay’s stats this season
Having made his debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, McTominay has been a mainstay in Manchester United's first-team under every single manager, making 232 appearances in total for the 13-time Premier League champions. Former head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even described the academy product as a "physical monster", while Portugal boss Roberto Martinez hailed McTominay as an "all-action" midfielder.
However, McTominay has primarily played in a more defensive role. In his entire career in the first team, the 27-year-old has played 130 times as a holding midfielder whose primary job was to protect the backline.
Nevertheless, United manager Erik ten Hag found a new role for the Scot this season, utilising him in a more advanced position, crashing into the box with late runs to get on the end of crosses which has been relatively successful. From McTominay's 25 career goals for Man United, six have come this season alone and he is just one goal away from equalling his best-ever record for the club.
Everton could sign £30m Harrison upgrade who's a "nightmare for defenders"
The Toffees could bolster their attacking department this winter.
ByAdam Scully Jan 7, 2024
McTominay's newfound role at Old Trafford has been compared to that of his former teammate and ex-Everton star Marouane Fellaini by The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton.
Like McTominay, Fellaini was often used as a focal point inside the opposition's box, where he scored 22 times for United in 177 matches – after plundering 33 goals and 26 assists in 177 games during a particularly fruitful spell at Goodison.
Given Everton's goalscoring issues this season, Dyche could potentially use McTominay in a similar manner to Ten Hag, deploying the midfielder in Onana's position but allowing him to get forward and attack crosses, particularly delivered by Dwight McNeil who is averaging a whopping 6.97 crosses per 90 this season and is the Toffees' top assister with five in total.
Furthermore, McTominay would be a massive upgrade right now on Onana and is outperforming the Belgian offensively and defensively this term, as is indicated in the table below.

Onana could be better than his potential successor in the long-term, but right now, McTominay is the perfect player for Dyche in what could be a gruelling relegation dogfight as he can defend as well as score goals. If Everton are to lose Onana, gaining McTominay in his prime won't be the worst deal in the world.
For the second year running now, Arsenal have fought their way into a Premier League title race, and with 16 games gone, they don't look like they are going anywhere just yet.
Mikel Arteta's men are showing a new maturity that was just ever so slightly lacking last season, and at the same time, they have become a lot harder to score against – boasting the joint-best defence in the league.
The only area in which they look slightly worse is attack. The free-flowing waves of constant pressure that defined their early success in 2022/23 just haven't returned in the same way this campaign, and worse still, finishing has become an issue.
Arsenal could sign the next Martinelli in £17m "special talent"

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 14, 2023
Arteta and Edu Gaspar clearly recognise this, as the club have been linked to several top strikers in recent months, from Napoli's Victor Osimhen to Brentford's Ivan Toney.
Still, the latest name, Brighton & Hove Albion's Evan Ferguson, might be the most exciting, and with the youngster openly comparing himself to Harry Kane, confidence certainly isn't an issue.
Arsenal transfer news – Evan Ferguson
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal will be on the lookout for a new striker in 2024, and one of the forwards they have a lot of 'admiration' for is the Seagulls' incredibly exciting youngster.
Ornstein also confirms that the Gunners aren't the only top side interested in the Irish prospect, but what will likely be the most significant barrier to this deal being completed is the enormous valuation that Brighton have placed on the youngster, a whopping £120m.
Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.
That would smash the Gunners' current transfer record of £105m that they paid for Declan Rice, but for a striker described as having an "amazing future ahead" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig and who has already scored six goals in ten league starts this year, he might prove to be worth it.
Especially if he can get anywhere close to the level of Kane, as he clearly believes is possible.
Arsenal could sign their answer to Harry Kane in Evan Ferguson
Now, that could be viewed as a massive leap by some. After all, Kane is arguably the greatest striker the Premier League has seen since the likes of Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry with 213 goals in the competition to date, and it would be utterly absurd to suggest that the young Irishman could match his output in the next couple of years, but after that, who knows.
The biggest selling point to the Brighton prospect is precisely that: the prospect of what he might become.
Few youngsters have burst onto the scene in quite the same way as the 19-year-old "superstar", as dubbed by Danny Murphy, and the expectation surrounding him is enormous.
Former Irish international John Aldridge wasn't fussed about being too presumptuous when he compared the dynamic forward to Kane earlier this year, saying: "Evan Ferguson could be an Irish version of Harry Kane.
"He reminds me of Kane in so many ways and that is a big compliment."
So, how does the "incredibly prolific", as dubbed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, youngster's underlying numbers stack up to Kane's from last season?
Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.
Well, he unsurprisingly loses out in most metrics, but he actually comes out on top in some, and with the age and experience gap between them, it's a generally positive outlook for Ferguson.
His better passing accuracy, defensive work and number of shots on target are all encouraging signs, and the fact that his non-penalty expected goals and assists figure isn't much worse is promising.

Ultimately, Arsenal would be investing in the potential that the "sensational" youngster, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, possesses, not necessarily in the player he is now.
He won't come in and replicate the form Kane showed last year, but his recent performances, underlying numbers and ringing endorsements all suggest that with the right coaching, he could reach a world-class level.
The promise of what Ferguson might achieve could also make him a perhaps better option than that of the aforementioned Toney, with the latter man less of a long-term fit at the age of 27, while also likely to cost around £100m.
With the Brighton ace potentially someone to build around for the next decade, in contrast to Toney, it could make the Irishman the preferred pick for Arteta and co.

Southampton have struggled defensively in games this season, notably conceding goals for fun in their first few matches in a rude awakening back to Championship life.
September saw Gavin Bazunu concede nine goals in just two games to start a dire month for the Saints, Russell Martin's men losing 5-0 on their travels away to Sunderland before Leicester City in the match directly after beat them on their own turf 4-1.
Southampton'sGavinBazunu
The Irish shot-stopper wasn't the only one to blame for these horrific defensive displays, experienced figure Jan Bednarek – who is now 27 years of age – was also poor in those games, especially in the Stadium of Light humilation.
The Polish centre-back would fail to put in a single tackle in this match as per Sofascore, allowing the Sunderland forwards to attack at will unchallenged.
Bednarek has since turned his season around and, in tow, the defensive frailties that burdened the Saints early into the season have vanished – a resolute 1-0 away win at Millwall recently saw Bazunu keep a rare clean sheet, whilst Bednarek was near flawless on the ball with an impressive 99% pass accuracy at the Den.
Still, with Martin's preference for young and hungry talents evident in Bednarek's defensive partner Taylor Harwood-Bellis, the Southampton boss could well cast an eye at the array of starlets coming through in the Academy structure to potentially replace his number 35 soon.
Dynel Simeu could well be the perfect heir for the Polish defender when the time is right, the 21-year-old highly regarded on the South Coast.
Dynel Simeu's statistics at youth level
Signed by Southampton from Chelsea in 2021 – the Saints splashing £1.5m on the young defender at the time – Simeu was impressive during his time with the Blues before moving on.
The four-time England U18 international managed to amass three goals and four assists whilst playing for Chelsea at U18 and U23 level, snubbing a new deal with the west London club however to test himself at St Mary's.
Simeu even made the bench for Chelsea in a Champions League tie versus Bayern Munich back in 2020, the ex-Blues U23 captain tipped for big things at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will hope they're not left regretting to decision to offload their starlet, the Blues renowned for ditching young talents who come back to haunt the club further down the line.
Dynel Simeu's statistics at senior level
Southampton were delighted to capture the 21-year-old in 2021, describing the defender as a "highly-rated" figure at Chelsea and one of the "brightest talents" at the club after the signing was unveiled.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 22, 2023
Simeu's time at Southampton has been bumpy however despite these initial glowing words, yet to make a senior start for the Saints since joining.
Derailed this year by a serious Achilles injury, Simeu's progression has been halted after promising loan spells away from the Championship club at Morecambe, Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers.
Simeu was a fan favourite at League Two Tranmere whilst on loan, notably winning ten aerial duels against Carlisle for the fourth-tier side in a league match last season.
From the 14 games he played for Rovers, Simeu helped his short-term employers keep six clean sheets before returning to St Mary's where he is yet to make his senior debut.
The 6 foot 1 centre-back will curse his luck that he's picked up a serious Achilles injury, pushing for more opportunities within the first-team fold after the Saints suffered relegation
Simeu will just focus on getting back to full fitness, eager to help Martin's men in some capacity this season if he can in their pursuit of winning promotion straight back to the Premier League.
Kraigg Brathwaite and Shane Dowrich scored fifties, helping the visitors take the first-innings honours before the match ended in a draw

Sunil Ambris made an unbeaten 114 off 98 balls to give the West Indians first-innings honours in their two-day warm-up game against the Indian Board President’s XI in Vadodara. Ambris, who had also hit a hundred against India A at at Beckenham in July, continued his impressive form to press his case for a place in the XI when West Indies take on India in the first Test in Rajkot from October 4.The top three – Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell and Shai Hope – and Shane Dowrich pitched in with useful contributions too, helping their side take a six-run lead after the hosts had declared on 360 for 6 at the end of the first day. Shimron Hetmyer (7) and Roston Chase (5) were the only frontline West Indian batsmen to be dismissed for single-digit scores.Brathwaite (52 off 78 balls, 9×4) and wicketkeeper-batsman Dowrich (65 off 69, 9×4, 1×6) made half-centuries, before Ambris, who came in at No. 7, took charge. He raised his first fifty off 60 balls and then accelerated to his second off only 35 balls. All told, he hit 17 fours and five sixes. When Jomel Warrican fell, the West Indians were 279 for 7, still 81 runs behind, but Ambris and Sherman Lewis, who is uncapped in Test cricket, moved the West Indians into the lead with an unbroken 87-run stand in 13.3 overs, of which Lewis contributed only 8.The Indian spinners – left-armer Saurabh Kumar and offspinner Jalaj Saxena – toiled away for 50 overs, conceding 221 runs between them while taking three wickets. Madhya Pradesh seamer Avesh Khan was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, finishing with 4 for 60 in 17 overs.
