Tottenham Hotspur "maintain contacts" for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie as Ange Postecoglou scours the market for new defenders, according to reports.
Who are Spurs signing this summer?
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and Lilywhites officials have been busy so far this summer, having already secured deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon on a free transfer.
Vicario has put pen to paper on a move from Empoli, a move that has cost the club around £17.2 million, while Maddison's transfer from Leicester City set Tottenham back just £45 million. Solomon, who is apparently set to sign his Spurs contracts today after completing a medical, will join on a Bosman deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Postecoglou, speaking after his side secured both Vicario and Maddison, claimed the duo have exactly what it takes in terms of charisma to become successful at Spurs.
“It’s not just about the talent they bring as footballers," said the Tottenham boss.
"It’s what they bring as people as well because we are going to play football that requires a certain type of personality and character.
“Both those guys have got it in abundance. I could hear it in their voices when I spoke to them. I had a couple of chats with both of them before we signed them and I knew that they were the right types to bring into the dressing room."
After bolstering key areas of the squad with the aforementioned additions, the goal now for Postecoglou is to strengthen his central defensive ranks with astute signings. Some media sources claim Spurs could even make multiple moves to reinforce that position of the team.
Tottenham leaked a woeful 63 league goals last season, the worst record of any top flight side above 15th in the table, something which they will be very keen to address this summer.
Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven is a player of serious interest to the north Londoners and some reliable reports indicate they're edging closer to an agreement.
However, in case of any late twists or the event a deal goes south, Spurs and Levy do have alternative options they "maintain contacts" for.

As per TUTTOmercatoWEB and journalist Raimondo De Magistris, one of those defenders is Leverkusen's young centre-half Hincapie. The Ecuador international, who played at last year's 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is apparently on Tottenham's radar alongside Max Kilman of Wolves.
Spurs apparently remain in dialogue with Leverkusen over Hincapie, a player who could cost between £21m-£26 million – an affordable price if Levy wishes to sign more than one centre-back for Postecoglou.
How good is Piero Hincapie?
Described as "tenacious" and "comfortable" in possession by the Bundesliga official website, former Leverkusen head coach Gerardo Seoane has also praised Hincapie in the past.
The South American, who played 30 German top flight games last season and ranked among Leverkusen's best players, has been heralded for his "really impressive" career to date.
"We knew he had the potential," said Seoane.
"But the way he's rising to the challenge and coping with the intensity levels is really impressive.
"We're pleasantly surprised with how he's performing in the Bundesliga and Europe."
With outgoings aplenty and reports of replacements on their way, Chelsea could field a much-changed line-up on the opening day of the Premier League season against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
It will be the start of what will be a crucial first season for Mauricio Pochettino and the Blues, who will be looking to make an instant return to the Champions League. It may take time for a new-look squad to gel, however, as the new boss attempts to find his strongest starting line-up.

4 GK: Mike Maignan

Following the pending departure of Edouard Mendy, Chelsea are short on a goalkeeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga next season. And that's where Mike Maignan could come in, with the shot-stopper valued at £30m (via Yahoo).
According to The Telegraph, the Blues are considering making a move for the AC Milan shot-stopper this summer with Kepa's number-one spot in doubt under Pochettino.
3 CB: Levi Colwill
Not exactly a new signing, but Levi Colwill more than showed that he's capable of stepping into Chelsea's side next season after playing a key role at Brighton under Roberto de Zerbi in the last campaign.
The young defender can form a solid partnership with Wesley Fofana next season, finally adding some much-needed stability to the backline at Stamford Bridge.
It makes sense for Chelsea to keep hold of Colwill after letting Kalidou Koulibaly leave to Saudi Arabia this summer, too. The last thing they want is to be short on options.
2 CM: Moises Caicedo

After playing a pivotal role in Brighton & Hove Albion's Europa League qualification last season, Moises Caicedo is unsurprisingly a man in demand this summer. And, according to reports, it is Chelsea who lead the way.
As per Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are set to open talks with Brighton for the midfielder and personal terms are not an issue as the London club prepare to go full steam ahead for a deal – though a fee will reportedly cost over £80m.
Caicedo would likely replace N'Golo Kante in Chelsea's side after the Frenchman swapped London for Saudi Arabia this summer.
1 ST: Nicolas Jackson

According to Romano and Will Unwin of The Guardian, Chelsea have completed the signing of Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson for £31.8m, as they look to solve their goal-scoring issues.
Scoring just 38 goals last season, the London club are in desperate need of a capable goalscorer, especially with Kai Havertz on the verge of joining Arsenal.
The hope will be that Jackson, who scored 12 La Liga goals last season, can take things up a level or two under Pochettino and become the striker that's needed at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United remain interested in signing Barcelona attacker Ferran Torres in the summer transfer window, according to a new report.

The Spaniard has been at the Camp Nou since the middle of the 2021/22 season, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Manchester City.
Torres has similarly had to settle for playing a supporting role for Barca, however, doing his bit for them en route to winning the La Liga title last season, but rarely being considered a key man. The £62,000-a-week attacker may have featured in 33 of his side's 38 league matches, but only 14 of those appearances were from the start, with others preferred in attack, from Raphinha to Robert Lewandowski.
The 21-year-old's future has been a big talking point in recent weeks, and with a potential exit coming his way, Newcastle are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move for him. Now, a new claim has emerged – one that suggests their interest isn't going away.

According to Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Torres is on the list of Barca's "transferable players" and the Magpies have seemingly made contact over a move, "calling for" him to come in this summer.
The Catalan giants will likely have to sell players to ease their current financial struggles and the former City man is someone who is seen as expendable. Raphinha is also loosely mentioned as a possible target for Newcastle, but it appears as though Torres is the more viable option of the two.
The Spanish youngster clearly hasn't hit the heights some expected of him at both City and Barca, but that's not to say he wouldn't be an impressive signing by the Magpies this summer.
Torres already has 39 goals to his name at senior club level, as well as 15 in 35 caps for Spain, and he should only become more of a force as he matures with age. His current manager Xavi has even gone as far as to call him "world-class" in the past, showing how much he rates him, even though he hasn't properly made the grade at Barca to date.
He is someone who could dovetail beautifully with Alexander Isak at Newcastle, being capable of playing in a wide or central attacking role, and the hope is that his past Premier League experience with City, where e scored a hat-trick at St James' Park, would allow him to hit the ground running.
