Man Utd fans debate Mason Greenwood’s poor performance against Wolves

Undoubtedly one of the biggest bright sparks of what has largely been a relatively frustrating campaign for Manchester United this season, Mason Greenwood has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

The 18-year-old stole the show on the club’s pre-season tour earlier in the summer with goals against Inter and Leeds, and he has duly rewarded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith whenever he has thrust him into the starting line-up for the senior team.

As per Transfermarkt, he has made 23 appearances for the first-team this season, scoring eight goals. And against Wolves in the FA Cup third round of Saturday afternoon, he was given a chance to start up front. Unfortunately for the teenager however, it wasn’t meant to be, producing one of his most ineffective displays since making the breakthrough into the big time.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?

He couldn’t convert any of his three attempts on goal, had just 52 touches of the ball, and lost possession eight times too. And after seeing his poor performance, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their academy starlet.

Some fans of the Manchester side pointed to his performance against Wolves as an indication of why he shouldn’t be starting games anytime soon, instead suggesting that he is “better off the bench”.

A couple of supporters took issue with the way in which he didn’t stay in the box long enough, and how he often drifted out wide.

However, a couple of United fans were quick to insist that whilst he may have had a disappointing game, it was largely down to a lack of service and that there shouldn’t be too much blame placed upon him.

Still only a teenager, there will inevitably be some peaks and troughs when it comes to Greenwood’s career at United. He is playing in a side that has been struggling for a few years now, and that’s never the greatest of environments to really express your talents in. The fact some United fans weren’t overly critical of the prodigy speaks volumes of their recognition that they understand he will have his off-days. After everything he has shown this season, he is at least entitled to that.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans react to transfer interest in this Premier League midfielder who has outscored many of their first-team stars.

Everton fans slate Marcel Brands after FA Cup defeat vs Liverpool

Loads of Everton fans on Twitter have destroyed director of football Marcel Brands following their side’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Toffees looked to be in a great position to get a win at Anfield given Carlo Ancelotti picked a full strength team while Jurgen Klopp made wholesale changes with many youngsters starting, and they had their chances in the first half – but they failed to take them.

The Italian’s side were much poorer after the break, and were unable to hit back after Curtis Jones’ brilliant goal for the hosts.

While a number of the players on the pitch would have received pelters from the supporters, it was Brands who came under scrutiny despite not being on the pitch.

Indeed, the likes of Lucas Digne, Richarlison, Fabian Delph, Yerry Mina and Moise Kean have been brought to Goodison Park during his tenure to date.

And Toffees fans are clearly not happy with the Dutchman’s work in the transfer market, as you can see below.

While this fan wasn’t happy with Brands, they were willing to give him until after the summer to prove that he can get things right, with Kean for example failing to score in his opening 20 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

That’s a fair point too, because the performance by some players who have cost a significant amount of money simply wasn’t good enough at Anfield.

Liverpool fans react to Danny Murphy’s comments on Jack Grealish

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Danny Murphy tipped Jack Grealish for a move to Anfield and discussed the Aston Villa man’s suitability to play under Jurgen Klopp.

In talking up the Englishman’s chances of playing for a Champions League club, Murphy – who used to play for Liverpool – wrote in his column for The Daily Mail: “Even though Liverpool are currently well-stocked for midfielders, what if Gini Wijnaldum doesn’t sign a new contract and James Milner gets to a certain age?

“Could Jack do the hard yards Jurgen Klopp demands? Yes. Would I have him ahead of Naby Keita for example? Yes.”

It appears as if Murphy’s comments haven’t gone down too well with the Reds supporters on Twitter, who felt the need to mock the 42-year-old’s words about Grealish.

The Aston Villa captain has enjoyed an impressive return to the Premier League this season, netting six goals while grabbing five assists in just 20 top-flight outings for the Villans – the 24-year-old also has two goals in the Carabao Cup to add to that tally.

It comes after the Villa academy graduate helped the Midlands-based side to promotion last term with six goals and seven assists in the Championship – given that he is close to matching that tally already, it is evident that the playmaker has gone up a gear.

Let’s see how the Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted to the comments…

These two supporters got the reaction off to a flying start.

One fan began laughing before saying “sack this guy immediately”, while another named Praneeth felt that Murphy was being “deluded” with his comments.

Elsewhere, another fan made reference to Murphy saying that he’d have Grealish over Keita by saying that not even the Aston Villa star himself would have Grealish over Keita.

Meanwhile, the words “idiot” and “ridiculous” were attached to Murphy’s words by these two fans, with one named Frank saying that, while Grealish is good, he’s “not Liverpool good”.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

Lastly, Lee said that this was “total rubbish from Murphy” before detailing a list of reasons why Grealish wouldn’t be suited to Liverpool – at No.4, Lee humorously argued that the playmaker “thinks too much of his hair”.

In other news, these Liverpool fans sang the praises of this player who “suddenly seems rejuvenated”…

Juventus’ Emre Can could be on his way to Everton in January

According to an exclusive report from the Daily Mirror, Juventus have told Emre Can he is surplus to requirements in Turin and Everton are an interested party.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that the 26-year-old midfielder could be on his way out of the Allianz Stadium and the Bianconeri would like to ship him off to a serious bidder.

Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly one of the interested parties – alongside Inter Milan – and Everton are lining up a bid of around £30m to land their target as the Toffees look to bolster their squad.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Can is also said to be on £100,000-a-week, per the same report, which is what made the likes of Nerazzurri ultimately back off.

It remains to be seen, however, if his history at Liverpool ends up being a dealbreaker.

Verdict

At this very moment, Maurizio Sarri has more than just a packed midfield.

Juventus have a total of seven midfielders at their disposal, including Can in that equation, and it doesn’t really come as a surprise that the German has been starved of any minutes with the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira and Blaise Matuidi all residing in the squad.

For that reason, he’s only managed to feature in 279 minutes across eight Serie A games in the ongoing campaign and there’s no obvious sign that his situation will change in the near future.

Of course, an ex-Liverpool player arriving at Goodison Park would be a sensational and highly controversial move but that doesn’t mean it’s completely impossible.

The Daily Mirror also mention that Ancelotti tried signing the player during the summer as well, while he was still at Napoli, but the asking price was too high.

Let’s see if he can land his man this time around.

Spurs boss Mourinho reveals "mixed emotions" after win

Jose Mourinho has claimed that Hugo Lloris’ return to action has left him with “mixed emotions”, per Football London.

What’s he said?

Spurs beat Norwich City 2-1 on Wednesday evening and the surprise of the night was perhaps the France international’s inclusion in goal.

He had been injured since October when he sustained a serious elbow problem in the dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Lloris subsequently missed 15 Premier League games, including the final four matches of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, but played for the first time under Mourinho against the Canaries.

And the Portuguese says that he has been left with a bittersweet feeling after the World Cup winner’s outing.

He said: “The return of Hugo is mixed emotions for me. It’s happiness to see one of the best goalkeepers in the world to be back. It’s a very good feeling for us but at the same time it is one of these decisions that sometimes we must have it, but it hurts. To leave Paulo out hurts.

“The good thing is that he is such a good member of the family and he is such a special friend of Hugo that I think he also shared our happiness to have Hugo back as a friend.

“For me, he gave me a lot of thinking and I had to try to be cold to make a decision without emotions because to leave Paulo out is not easy.”

No room for sentiment

Spurs need their best players fit.

While Lloris was looking rather suspect before his injury – he had kept just one clean sheet in the league – Gazzaniga has been just as poor.

Calling all Tottenham fans: How much do you really know about Spurs’ new hero? Find out below…

He has shipped 23 goals in 17 league games and has been on the winning side just five times; even in those games, he conceded six goals.

Having Lloris back, then, is a boost, and there is no room for Mourinho to be sentimental about the potential impact on the former Southampton man.

Dropping him is the only answer.

Meanwhile, one image should force Daniel Levy into the transfer market!

Aston Villa fans left in dismay as James Chester joins Stoke on loan

Aston Villa have confirmed that James Chester has joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season.

The cult hero will be moving to the side that currently sit just five points and two places above the Championship’s relegation zone, and will be aiming to help them stay in the division.

However, Villa fans have shown little concern for the Potters’ situation, due to the dismay they feel about Chester leaving – even if it is temporarily.

Chester has made himself a cult hero at Villa Park, mainly doing so last season when he put his body on the line by playing through injury, which eventually helped earn promotion through the play-offs.

However, it is not just his commitment to the cause that has earned the Wales international his praise, as he has had longevity with the club, which is indicated by the statistics below.

Seeing somebody with that type of legacy walking out of the Villa Park doors is disappointing for fans, with one declaring that they are “gutted”.

Fans’ disappointment about the move is not completely sentimental though, as there is a practical part to this, with many feeling that the 31-year-old will now need to be replaced.

Chester has not actually played a Premier League game this season, but has been on the bench for the last five games, while also making two cup appearances.

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

This shows that he could have been an important back-up option, especially with Dean Smith now deploying a back-three, with his departure deemed to be leaving Villa light at the back.

Manchester United fans react to David Ornstein’s Joshua King update

Manchester United are clearly looking to try to take Joshua King to Old Trafford at the final hour.

The Red Devils have already had a bid rejected for the Norway international, and are said to be returning with a second offer.

Now, journalist David Ornstein has provided an update on the 28-year-old’s situation.

He has revealed that the Bournemouth striker wants to move to Manchester, and he is ready to travel if the two clubs can agree a deal.

Many United fans have been reacting to the update, and it seems that some are happy with the news.

In the last two seasons, he has scored 28 goals in the Premier League. For a side towards the bottom of the table, that is an impressive return.

Calling all transfer experts! Can you get all 15 questions right on our Deadline Day quiz?

Others, though, are not quite as positive.

Given that he plays for the Cherries, he is not exactly the high-profile signing many will have expected.

One fan, meanwhile, has made comparisons with one player currently out on loan in Italy – Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international scored just five goals in 45 appearances for the Red Devils before being shipped out to Internazionale. The switch from Arsenal just didn’t work out.

And another supporter has raised an interesting point in regards to his fitness.

King is currently out injured, so that would need to be taken in to consideration as well.

Newcastle fans react to Allan Saint-Maximin’s Twitter gesture

It’s not every day that footballing superstars answer your messages or even acknowledge your presence on social media.

With a sea of fans constantly spamming them, it’s unlikely that they’ll respond but fans persist with their endeavour anyway.

However, one fan was lucky enough to catch Allan Saint-Maximin’s attention with a letter from his young son who wanted to be just like the Newcastle star in the future.

And to his surprise, the 22-year-old forward responded to the letter on Twitter, no doubt making the young lad’s day while also impressing a lot of the fans along the way.

Is life under Ashley really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, Newcastle fans…

Many of them were in awe of the gesture and suggested that Saint-Maximin is a true class act both on and off the pitch.

One fan even called him an absolute legend.

One fan went as far to suggest the charismatic winger is slowly becoming a Toon hero.

And needless to say, he will be a true hero to that young fan who wrote the letter in the first place.

And the overriding feeling about Saint-Maximin, who signed from Nice last summer for a fee which could rise to £20m, is that he is a class act both on and off the pitch.

Many fans have been quick to recognise the impact this simple tweet could have on the youngster involved.

Simply by replying to a message on Twitter, the speedy winger has proven himself as a role model for both the younger and older generations.

Meanwhile, BBC’s sports pundit made a huge claim about Saint-Maximin, revealing what he thinks the future has in store for the player…

Spurs fans hail Rafael van der Vaart

Tottenham Hotspur fans have hailed former midfielder Rafael van der Vaart on his birthday.

The Dutchman, of course, spent two years at the club following his move from Real Madrid in 2010.

In total, the 36-year-old made 77 appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals and also registering 18 assists. In all the games in which he scored against Arsenal, too, he was never once on the losing side.

And fans have taken to Twitter to wish him a happy birthday and wax lyrical about his talent.

Indeed, some supporters have wished for the retired ace to return to the club.

Van der Vaart endured something of a nomadic career after his spell at Spurs ended, playing for Hamburg, Real Betis, Midtjylland and Esbjerg fB.

Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?

And two fans still believe that he ought to return to north London.

The deal to sign the player was something of a surprise at the time.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy managed to bring him in on deadline day in 2010.

As Sky Sports reported at the time, Spurs emerged as contenders to sign him only a few hours before the summer deadline, eventually paying £8m for his signature.

Meanwhile, Spurs have a new star in their midst!

Charlton’s January decision justified after Sam Field injury

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has been speaking about Sam Field’s situation, as reported by London News Online.

What’s the story?

It is expected that the midfielder, who has been on loan from West Bromwich Albion, will not be turning out in a red shirt anytime in the rest of the season.

When asked whether the 21-year-old’s campaign is over, Bowyer replied: “Yeah, I do. Sam has gone back to West Brom – his knee is not looking good. That’s why we brought in a sixth loan because we knew it was touch and go.”

This will be a source of severe frustration for the West Brom man, who has only managed five starts and four substitute appearances in the Championship, recording one assist during that time.

There were also encouraging signs on what could have been offered when he was on the pitch, as he averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.2 clearances and 0.4 blocks per game, while maintaining a pass success rate of 82.8%.

To make this injury news even more frustrating, Field actually made it onto the bench against Barnsley and Stoke City, before suffering from another setback.

Decision vindicated

All of the above indicates that this will be highly frustrating for the Addicks, as he is an option that could have been useful, but things would have been worse if they were unprepared for this eventuality.

As mentioned by Bowyer, they did not allow this to happen due to their deadline day business, in which they brought in three loanees, having previously signed Andre Green at the beginning of the window on a temporary basis.

David Davis is arguably the most direct replacement for the 21-year-old, and also the most prevalent of the loanees, having started three Championship games already.

Who is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure Charlton players?

In those games, the 29-year-old has averaged 2.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1 clearance, while making four fouls per game and having a pass success rate of just 75%.

This indicates that while he is perhaps not as clean as Field in the way he goes about his business, Davis can help to ensure his absence is not missed as much as it could have been.

Meanwhile, one man has done absolutely nothing to disprove the doubts about him.
