Crystal Palace fans react to impressive season statistic

On Tuesday evening, Crystal Palace’s official Twitter account sent out a post which stated that the team’s total of 33 points from 27 Premier League matches this season is their best ever return at this stage of a campaign.

Indeed, the Eagles are three points better off than they were at this stage of the 2018/19 season, whilst they have eight points more than 2016/17.

As it stands, Roy Hodgson’s side are 13th in the Premier League table.

The capital outfit beat Newcastle United 1-0 on Saturday but have actually lost three of their last four in the league, whilst their success over the Magpies was their first victory of 2020.

As a result, many Palace fans have insisted that their team should be even better off after 27 matches of the season.

Meanwhile, some have said that they are not too bothered about their team’s total at this stage and would rather address such matters at the end of the season.

Another supporter called the revelation “underwhelming”.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

Indeed, the fact that Palace have been on such a disappointing run but can still boast their highest tally at this stage is an indication of how impressive they were in the opening months of the campaign.

Meanwhile, a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to a hugely surprising transfer report.

Everton fans blast Fabian Delph after disappointing loss in London

Everton lost for the 11th time in the Premier League this season on Sunday as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for the Gunners, who recovered from conceding inside the first minute to ultimately record a 3-2 win.

Fabian Delph played 82 minutes of the match for the visitors, making three tackles and registering one shot during his time on the field, according to WhoScored.

The Everton fans were not impressed, though, with many taking to social media to criticise the England international for his performance.

Meanwhile, one supporter claimed that Delph, who arrived from Manchester City last summer, was ‘another useless signing’ by the club’s director of football Marcel Brands.

Another fan said that he would be looking to sell Delph this summer, although he is not the only one, with the individual in question setting out his dream transfer plans.

The criticism has not stopped there, though, with two more supporters hitting out at Delph’s perceived lack of leadership and commitment to the cause.

However, a number of the club’s fans were delighted with this individual for his showing at the Emirates Stadium.

Leeds: Joe Urquhart gives his opinion on Ian Poveda’s situation at the club

Joe Urquhart and Graham Smyth discussed Ian Poveda’s curious situation at Leeds United on one of their Inside Elland Road podcasts and gave their opinion on the young player.

Poveda was a January signing for the Whites since the young talent has arrived from Premier League champions Manchester City as Marcelo Bielsa snatched to lure him to Yorkshire.

Still, life at Leeds has proven rather slow and Urquhart believes that the answer might lie in the team’s training sessions.

Here’s what he said for Inside Elland Road (27/2/2020): “Given the information that we’ve had in the past as to why players aren’t involved would be that he’s maybe not performing as well as he should be in the murderball sessions and things like that. Maybe it’s just that all the players are performing better than him in the murderball sessions, which is generally what Bielsa makes his decisions on first squads, isn’t it? I find it odd because he went straight into the first squad when he first arrived and then has just not been involved since.”

It’s difficult to argue with Urquhart on that one since Poveda has only been called up for the senior squad twice since his arrival and is yet to tally any minutes for the team. Indeed, the likes of Jean-Kevin Augustin, Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa have all struggled to get into the side right away following his arrival.

However, Urquhart seems to believe the training sessions might hold the answer and if Poveda is simply not performing as well as his teammates, that would certainly explain things a little bit.

Leeds fans, what do you think the reason behind Poveda’s situation actually is? Let us know down in the comment section below!

Leeds fans react to interest in Rob Dickie

Rob Dickie is a centre-half currently plying his trade at Oxford, and he has had a very successful season, making 45 appearances for the U’s this term.He has helped his side reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, as well as third-place in League One after winning five consecutive games, and that has sparked interest from Leeds, as well as Southampton and Burnley. That highlights the ability of the 24-year-old as well as what he could offer in the future, but the report hasn’t sparked too much excitement amongst the Whites’ fanbase, possibly because they are looking to the Premier League. As a result, they will likely be hoping for tried-and-tested top-level players, rather than Dickie – who has played just one match above League One level. One fan still likes what he sees however, and gave a glowing review of the defender.

Dickie may be exactly what Leeds need, but it is difficult to tell until he is tested at Elland Road, and given many fans may not be too knowledgable about the player that have instead considered how his arrival may impact those around him.

For example, Ben White’s loan deal is up in the summer. The 22-year-old has had a similar career path to Dickie and was also a bit of an unknown quantity before joining Leeds, so it is easy to see why supporters have immediately thought of the centre-back.

Some are concerned that interest in Dickie may mean the club’s chances of signing White have been reduced, and have stressed the importance of trying to make his deal a permanent one.

Others have instead been thinking of Gaetano Berardi, another defender whose future is under doubt due to his contract expiring this summer.

Verdict: Should United use De Gea or Henderson next season?

Manchester United may have shown improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the team currently just three points behind fourth place, but he will be looking for further development.

One part of his plan has been to introduce talented academy products such as Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams to the first-team setup.

He will have a massive dilemma on his hands next season about what to do with another of those: Dean Henderson.

The 23-year-old has impressed in two separate loan spells at Sheffield United, so Solskjaer must now decide whether it is time to bring him into the fold ahead of David De Gea or stick with the Spaniard.

Removing the current number 1 from his duties between the sticks would be a bold move, seeing as he has now played 394 games in a United shirt, but Henderson will be keen to get his chance at Old Trafford.

With the above in mind, FFC writers have given their verdics about whether Solskjaer should use De Gea or Henderson next season.

Viji Jeevathayalan

“It may be unpopular but the time has come for Manchester United to sell De Gea this summer. The Spain international just hasn’t been at the required level for the past couple of seasons now, and Henderson’s exploits whilst on loan for the second season at Sheffield United gives the Red Devils the perfect chance to change tack.

“What kind of message would it send out to Henderson when he’s helping the Blades to an impressive season in the top-flight, and he sees De Gea still keep the number one spot at Old Trafford despite his numerous howlers? Ole must be ruthless, and bring an end to one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s signings.”

Matt Dawson

“Henderson is one of the rising stars of the Premier League but is he ready for regular football in the cauldron that is Old Trafford? I’m not so sure. I rate the Sheffield United loanee highly but it’s hugely important to remember he’s still an incredibly inexperienced goalkeeper.

“He might have bags of potential but De Gea has proven himself to be a world-class acquisition, winning the club’s Player of the Season award on numerous occasions. Henderson has kept the second-most clean sheets in the entire of the top-flight but it’s key to remember his woes at the European U21 Championships last summer.

“In one of his most high pressured situations yet, he made a costly blunder against Romania as the Three Lions were ultimately dumped out of the tournament. Yes, the 23-year-old has come a long way since that moment, but they should throw their trust into someone of Henderson’s ilk yet. If he’s willing to wait another year then perhaps his time will then come. However, for now, De Gea should still be first choice for Manchester United. They’d be taking a risk otherwise.”

Quickfire Questions: Can you get 100% on this Man United prodigies quiz?

Kealan Hughes

“This may be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s biggest problem this summer.

“Both De Gea and Henderson are brilliant keepers, and it would be unfair to keep one of them on the bench all season, and also harsh on Sergio Romero who has barely put a foot wrong since joining the club.

“Henderson keeps getting better and better however and will surely be no.1 in the future if United hang onto him. With the Euros being delayed he will be eager for more match action too and that means another loan – possibly back to Sheffield United – would be the best option.

“Solskjaer can’t afford to get this wrong as he risks alienating either Henderson or De Gea, and if the former is to stick around then he deserves his fair share of game time.”

Danny Lewis

“De Gea’s time as number 1 has felt like it is slowly coming to an end, as he has looked far too weak at times, with the goal conceded against Everton being a prime example – even if it can be argued that it was a foul from Dominic Calvert-Lewin he should have done much better.

“Even his handling has looked off at times, such as when he let Ismaila Sarr’s shot slip through his fingers, and while Henderson has made an error or two of his own, he is a ‘keeper on the rise, whereas De Gea is potentially on the decline.

“The Englishman’s emergence in the Premier League should definitely accelerate the process of De Gea being taken out of the team, as only Liverpool have conceded fewer goals than the Blades this season.

“All of the 23-year-old’s development so far has been working towards the moment when he gets a chance in the United goal – 2020/21 should be the season he gets it.”

Meanwhile, FFC writers have given their verdicts about a Man United youngster’s contract situation.

Poortvliet bargain ruined his Southampton legacy

Back in 2008, the Southampton manager at the time, Jan Poortvliet, completed a signing which – unbeknownst to him at the time – would turn out to be a complete and utter bargain.

The Dutch coach oversaw the £1.2m capture of little-known midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from French outfit Strasbourg, a man who would go on to achieve a tremendous amount at St Mary’s – however, it didn’t end too romantically, to say the least.

The dominant defensive midfielder made 30 Championship appearances in his first campaign with the Saints in 2008/09, where the club were unfortunately relegated to League One – not the best of starts for the new arrival.

However, Schneiderlin made 37 League One appearances that term, and then another 27 the following season in England’s third tier to help Southampton earn an immediate return to the second tier, which is where his roller-coaster journey on the south coast truly began to hit its peak.

The Zellwiller-born man then appeared in all 42 of Southampton’s Championship games to incredibly earn them back-to-back promotions, meaning that he would become a Premier League player with the club whom he had just spent two successive seasons in League One with – a truly great story.

However, it could be argued that Schneiderlin let it all go to his head.

After making 95 Premier League appearances for the club, the 15-cap France international wanted to leave St Mary’s, going to unprofessional lengths to make it happen.

After learning that he would not be allowed to leave, Schneiderlin took to his Twitter account to express his frustrations in a tweet that he has still not deleted to this day.

He was eager to join the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren in leaving the club in the summer of 2014, but was told he had to stay in news that quite clearly angered him.

Schneiderlin – who eventually cost Southampton just £4.67k per game when his £1.2m transfer fee is divided by his 257 appearances for the Saints – did get his move away the following summer, joining Manchester United for £25m.

Premier League Inflation: You won’t believe how much these famous transfers would cost today…

While he somewhat ruined his legacy with his embarrassing attempts to force an exit, the Poortvliet capture was extremely good value for money having netted Southampton £23.8m in profit after helping them reach the Premier League.

Former Sunderland player Stephen Elliott is never afraid to hold back when sharing his views of the current state of the club, whether it is discussing the tactics of Phil Parkinson or the decision-making of Stewart Donald. With football put on hold, he doesn’t have that luxury, so has instead recently got involved with a fan discussion about the best forgotten Sunderland goals. One fan on Twitter recalled a strike by Elliott against Wolves at Molineux but the striker in fact shared that he preferred one he scored against the Midlands outfit in a 3-1 home win in 2004.The Irishman’s strike was one to behold in that match, as he turned and volleyed goalwards, with the ball crashing in off the underside of the crossbar on its way in to give the Black Cats the lead.Calling all FFC readers! Liam Lawrence had equalised and the former midfielder took notice of his ex-teammate’s comment after Elliott praised the quality of his goal, too.

Lawrence was more than happy to hear of his goalscoring feats, which were just one of several in a Sunderland shirt as both he and Elliott helped the north-east outfit to promotion under Mick McCarthy.

Leeds fans hail footage of Jean-Kevin Augustin working out

As the footballing world continues to wait on edge about what will happen to the current season, players are having to spend a significant amount of time away from the pitch – something that isn’t exactly ideal for top-level athletes.

But Leeds ace Jean-Kevin Augustin is seemingly doing everything he can to make sure he gets in tip-top shape for if and when the campaign resumes.

In a video posted on the Whites’ official Twitter account, the Frenchman can be seen working out, no doubt trying to ensure he is completely in tune with Marcelo Bielsa’s notorious demands.

And after watching the footage, Leeds fans flooded to the replies section in their droves.

Some Leeds fans talked up how Augustin could return a different animal when the Championship resumes, and suggested he could be their “new secret weapon”.

Having signed him on a loan deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig back in the January transfer window, Leeds may have hoped Augustin could play a leading role in their promotion charge and give Patrick Bamford some much-needed competition.

Instead, he has played a total of just 48 minutes of Championship football, and hasn’t even been involved in the match-day squad in five out of the ten league games he has been at the club for.

But if he can make sure he is in great condition when the season kick-starts again, there’s no reason why he can’t be the man to give Leeds that extra little spark to ensure their return to the top-flight.

Meanwhile, Leeds fans discuss Phil Hay’s report on the club’s finances.

Spurs would make major coup with move for Barcelona’s Arthur

According to Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham are interested in making a move for Barcelona midfielder Arthur this summer.

What’s the word?

The summer will represent Jose Mourinho’s second transfer window whilst in charge of Spurs, and it appears he has his eyes set on a new play-making central midfielder.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo suggest that the north London side are set to battle Serie A giants Inter for the services of Arthur, and that they would both be able to offer the Brazilian a substantial increase on his current wages at the Camp Nou.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that with Barcelona interested in Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, Arthur’s availability has been the subject of discussion, with Spurs catching wind of it and throwing their name into the hat too.

The next Xavi

When Barcelona icon Xavi himself admits that he sees a lot of himself in Arthur, then you know you’ve got a top player on your hands. The Spain legend said: “I see myself when I see Arthur on television. He is a very quick thinker. He has a natural talent, but most of all, he has a lot of room to improve through training. Arthur is already a mature player and I see that he has massive untapped potential.”

The Brazilian is the ultimate midfield play-maker even at 23, helping to dictate the tempo of games with his laser-like passing. Despite playing over 50 passes per game in La Liga this season, he has an unbelievable pass accuracy of 91.2%, and it’s no surprise that a former Juventus scout, Junior Chavare, waxed lyrical about his ability.

He said: “He’s got 360-degree vision. If you come after him from one side, he escapes through the other. His decision-making is spectacular.”

Forget the likes of Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp. Bringing Arthur to north London would land Spurs a bona-fide star who could run the Lilywhites’ midfield for the next decade or so. He may not have succeeded in being Xavi’s long-term heir in Barcelona, but he could certainly be that in north London.
