Middle-order batsman Rameez Shahzad capped off a superb run of form in the UAE tri-series, producing a career-best 121 not out off 115 balls to lift the hosts to a four-wicket triumph over Scotland, their first win of the tournament.After posting a pair of fifties earlier in the series against Ireland, Rameez kicked on past three figures for the first time in 11 ODIs to lead UAE to their highest successful chase in ODI cricket, besting a chase of 281 against Afghanistan in 2014. By the time Ashfaq finally departed for a career-best 92 off 87 balls, UAE’s target had been reduced to 125 off the final 19 overs.Rameez cantered the rest of the way, striking a trio of fours off Cameron at the start of the 40th over to move into the 90s before a single to start the 41st took him to a century off 91 balls. He received the necessary support late in the chase from Adnan Mufti, who made 38 off 29 balls before losing his wicket with just 12 needed off the last 21 balls. A single by Rameez off the first ball of the 50th over clinched victory.The win for UAE took them level with Scotland at two points on the tri-series table, though Scotland officially took second place on the net-run-rate tiebreaker behind winners Ireland.

Leeds United are reportedly interested in completing the signing of Venezia attacker Joel Pohjanpalo in the summer transfer window.

The Finnish striker is 28 years of age currently and has become a key player for Venezia, having arrived at the Serie B club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2022. Last season, Pohjanpalo scored 19 goals and registered seven assists in 40 appearances for his new team, outlining his relentless end product in the final third.

Pohjanpalo's current deal expires in 2025, and while his club will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of him until that point, they may be aware that there will be plenty of interest in him this summer.

Leeds are badly in need of adding firepower to their squad this season, with their Championship season getting off to a disappointing start with a 2-2 draw at home to Cardiff City, and it would be a surprise if they didn't strengthen in that area before the end of the summer transfer window.

Patrick Bamford doesn't look like the force he used to be, with injuries curtailing his progress in recent years, while Rodrigo has sealed a summer move to Saudi Arabia. Now, it looks as though Pohjanpalo is a target for Leeds in the current window, following a new report that has emerged.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], the Finland international is "tempting" clubs both in Italy and abroad, with the Whites one of those in the conversation to sign him. West Ham, Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers are all mentioned as possible suitors, with Genoa attacker Massimo Coda seen as a replacement for him at Venezia, suggesting they are resigned to losing him.

Pohjanpalo could be a fascinating signing by Leeds this summer, solving what has become an issue ahead of what is hopefully a promotion-winning season in the Championship. Wilfried Gnonto was used in the No.9 against Cardiff, but the young Italian is arguably at his best in a wider role.

The Venezia man has scored 100 goals at club level in his career, not to mention netting 14 times in 63 caps for Finland, so he is clearly someone who a lot of experience at the top down the years, suggesting he could come in and spearhead the Whites' promotion push.

The fact that there is some Premier League interest could act as a stumbling block, though, with the idea of playing in England's top flight something that is likely to appeal more, should West Ham retain their interest in him.

Pohjanpalo is also a character, as highlighted by him celebrating last season by drinking a beer straight after being substituted, and that personality could make him an immediate cult hero at Elland Road.

Having a relentless goalscorer in the Championship is vital for any team with aspirations of going up to the Premier League and that is no different with Leeds, who are unlikely to mount a serious challenge if that problem isn't addressed sooner rather than later.

Celtic have been handed a big boost in their pursuit of Swiss midfielder Fabian Rieder, according to Dean Jones.

According to reports, the 21-year-old, who has an "unbelievable technical ability", has attracted the interest of several Bundesliga sides, with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg monitoring the midfielders situation. The report also states that Rieder's club Young Boys have put a £13m asking price on the youngster who has already managed an assist for the Pro League side this season in the clubs opening game. The Swiss midfielder has reportedly made Monchengladbach his preferred destination this summer should he depart his boyhood club.

The Hoops have been handed a boost however, with Borussia Mönchengladbach director Roland Virkus revealing in an interview with Sky Sports (via the Scottish Sun) that the German side cannot afford to pay the asking price, and unless the situation changes they will not be completing a deal for the midfielder: "Fabian Rieder is a good player. But he costs over €10m. That's a board we can't handle. That the player is good and interesting, that we've dealt with him – that's clear. But Fabian Rieder is out of the question at the moment."

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones revealed that this is the "golden moment" for Celtic to make the move for the "exciting player" due to the problems Mönchengladbach face with the deal. The journalist also played down any real chance of a Hoops move for Manchester United midfielder Donny Van de Beek: "The big fear around Rieder was that he could land at Gladbach, but that is being played down now, and that’s good news. I’ve spoken before about what an exciting player I think this would be for Celtic, so if they are going to make a move, this would be a golden moment to do so.

As for Donny van de Beek, he is still of interest, but there are offers from leagues he would feel better suited to, and I just get the impression they will struggle to make any real progress with him.”

Would Rieder be a good signing for Young Boys?

Rieder could be a real gem of a signing for the Bhoys.

The midfielder is a real attacking spark, managing nine goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances for Young Boys in the 2022/23 campaign, and those 20 goal contributions would make him the Scottish champions biggest attacking threat from the centre of the park, with the Bhoys closest competitor being Matt O'Riley who managed 15 last campaign.

The midfielder is also incredibly creative, with his 2.1 chances created per 90 last season a higher total than any Celtic player could manage, and that creative quality was only further showcased during the players bright U21 Euro's campaign, where he averaged 2.3 key passes per 90 as the side made it to the Quarter finals where they ultimately fell to Spain in extra-time.

Should the Bhoys complete the transfer, manager Rodgers could have a real difference maker in the middle of the park who could form fantastic partnerships with the likes of O'Riley and new additions Odin Thiago Holm and Hyeok-kyu Kwon.

Sunderland enjoyed a terrific first season back at Championship level last term as they reached the play-off semi-finals against Luton Town.

The Black Cats lost to Rob Edwards' side, who went on to win promotion to the Premier League with a victory over Coventry at Wembley, but it was still an excellent year for manager Tony Mowbray, given that the team was in League One during the previous campaign.

It was an impressive achievement for the club as they made their way into the top six in spite of their issues at the top end of the pitch.

Sunderland transfer news – Sydney van Hooijdonk

Ross Stewart missed 36 competitive matches through injury and Premier League side Everton recalled loanee centre-forward Ellis Simms in January.

Kristjaan Speakman and Mowbray swooped to sign Joe Gelhardt on loan from Leeds United but the young attacker failed to deliver a consistent threat as he produced three goals in 20 Championship appearances, four fewer than Simms managed in 17 games.

The Sunderland head coach could now finally replace the former Toffees striker by signing reported transfer target Sydney van Hooijdonk from Bologna.

He was sent on loan to Heerenveen in his home country last term and caught the eye with an impressive return of 16 goals in 30 Eredivisie starts.

The 23-year-old marksman averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.99 for the Dutch outfit, which would have placed him fourth within the Black Cats squad last term – behind Jack Clarke, Simms, and Stewart.

His 16-goal haul is also more than any of Mowbray's players managed in the Championship, as Amad Diallo was the club's top-scorer with 14 strikes.

The 6 foot 3 monster made his senior breakthrough with NAC Breda after an incredible 42 goals in 57 outings at youth level for the club. During the 2020/21 campaign, van Hooijdonk scored 15 times in 28 appearances in the Dutch second tier, which earned him a move to Bologna in Italy.

Zero goals in five matches for the Serie A team shows that the towering dynamo is yet to prove himself in a major European league but his form on loan at Heerenveen proves that the potential is there for him to be a reliable goalscorer.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once described the young finisher as "prolific" and the Sunderland target's statistics in the Netherlands really do back up that claim.

Therefore, van Hooijdonk could finally replace Simms at the Stadium of Light as the quality is there for him to be a superb scorer under Mowbray.

The now-Coventry City ace scored seven goals in 14 league starts – once every other start – while on Wearside last season and proved himself to be capable of being a reliable centre-forward alongside Stewart.

Sunderland could now find another no.9 capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis by landing the talented youngster from Bologna, who scored just over once every other Eredivisie start during the 2022/23 campaign, to bolster their forward options.

The Gelhardt deal did not work out earlier this year but Mowbray and Speakman can put things right by snapping up a player with the ability to fire the club back to the play-offs, or higher, again over the next nine months.

Cobras continued their strong show in the second half of the Sunfoil Series to complete a 151-run win over Knights in Paarl inside three days

Cobras were last on the points table at the halfway stage, with little over half the points of their nearest rival, but have reeled off three wins in a row under new coach Ashwell Prince and new captain Dane Piedt, and are now serious title-contenders.On a juicy surface, Cobras chose to bat against the competition’s best attack and struggled to cope. Duanne Olivier (4 for 43) and Shadley van Schalkwyk (4 for 40) sliced through them to dismiss the hosts for 154 in 52.2 overs. Justin Ontong’s 38 was the top score with only four other batsmen getting into the 20s.Knights’ joy was shortlived, though. They finished the first day on 137 for 6 with wickets shared among four of Cobras’ frontlines including franchise debutant Kyle Simmonds.
