The Gunners were left incensed after seeing their France international sent off during the first half of the Premier League clash with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Saliba was initially shown a yellow card, before referee Rob Jones was encouraged to review the incident on a pitch-side monitor.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sky Sports cameras showed PGMOL chief Webb sat in the stands with an earpiece and mobile phone as he watched events unfold on the south coast. He was in conversation with the person sat next to him, while ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher asked on social media – before hastily deleting the post: “Was Howard Webb involved in the decision-making of the red card of Saliba??”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Jarred Gillett, who was on VAR duty, asked Jones to take a second look at Saliba’s challenge on Bournemouth striker Evanilson – with the Cherries star dragged back while running clear as he looked to latch on to a wayward pass from Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard.

Saliba was judged to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity, as all angles of the challenge were taken into account, and was given his marching orders in a game that Arsenal went on to lose 2-0. The Gunners believe that they have been on the wrong end of another controversial call from the match officials.

Is Alex Carey set to leave the Adelaide Strikers?

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey may be on the move to a new BBL franchise.Carey’s performances for the Adelaide Strikers, particularly in their title-winning season in 2017-18, played a major part in his ascension to the national side where he has been vice-captain at various times. But it is unclear whether he will play for the Strikers after Australia’s limited-overs series against India and Australia A’s tour match against the Indians, for which he has also been selected.ESPNcricinfo understands that as late as last week Carey had not signed with the Strikers, and when pressed on whether he would return to play for Adelaide he gave a cryptic response.”I won’t give anything away at the moment,” Carey said, speaking from quarantine in Sydney, having just returned from the IPL where he played three games for the Delhi Capitals. “Watch this space. There should be an announcement in the coming days and I’m really excited to play in the Big Bash this year.”After the three-day game I’ll join the franchise that I’m going to. Watch this space.”Meanwhile, Carey says he has been given no guarantee that he will get his Australia T20 spot back, after being dropped for the the last T20I on the tour of England in August. With Carey sitting out, Matthew Wade took the gloves for the game in Southampton, and opened the batting while David Warner was rested.Carey returned to the side for the ODI series and made a series-winning century in the final ODI at Old Trafford.”I’m not sure what the line-up would be,” Carey said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t a successful T20 series for us in England which always allows some doors to open in terms of selection. I don’t have any indication at this stage. But I’m fully focused and excited about what’s going to be a huge ODI series.”Alex Carey clings on to a swirling catch•BCCI

It was the second time Carey had been dropped from the T20 side in the last two years. He was also left out of the two-match series in India in 2019 when Peter Handscomb took the gloves. He returned to play in all six T20Is last summer but did not bat in any match due to the dominance of Australia’s top order. He then managed scores of 27, 14, and 7 on the tour of South Africa before scores of just 1 and 2 in the first two games in England forced the selectors’ hand.”My numbers in the past few T20s probably allowed the opening of the door for Wadey to come in and Davey (Warner) obviously didn’t play that last T20 and Wadey got an opportunity opening the batting,” Carey said.”Unfortunately, I never like getting left out of any team but it’s allowed me to go away and develop, if it is a lower order role or if it’s back up the top of the order, doing everything I can to get back into that team is something I want to do. But again, since then I felt like I finished off that UK tour really strongly and took a lot out of the IPL working with Punter (Ricky Ponting). We’ll see how this summer starts with both my form and selection.”Carey’s family is also in limbo at the moment with his wife and young son forced to flee Adelaide to Sydney at short notice yesterday after a spike in Covid-19 cases in Adelaide changed travel protocols for people attempting to leave South Australia. He has not seen his family since leaving for England in August and won’t be reunited with them until he has completed the mandatory 14-day quarantine that applies to international travellers, which concludes on November 26.It is further evidence of the enormous complexity of the situation for Cricket Australia, the BCCI, the players, and staff. But Carey said the players had been checking in on each other in the various travel bubbles in the UK, the UAE, and now in Sydney.”I think the relationships we have in this group is something that we all fall back on and joining this little bubble here, we get to see our mates and some familiar faces,” Carey said.”All the guys’ spirits are really strong from all the indicators I’ve seen. The training effort and the physical shape that everyone is in is fantastic. It’s obviously a little bit different than what we’re used to, being away from home for this long, but CA has been fantastic and all the players are really close and checking in on one another.”

Chelsea struck gold on star who’s now worth more than Caicedo & Gallagher

The entire squad at Chelsea is absolutely packed with talent, but the midfield department is particularly special.

Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher, and Moises Caicedo are surely the future of the Blues midfield, given their age and quality.

Enzo Maresca must be incredibly excited to install his philosophy into the aforementioned trio, who all suit his play style perfectly.

Gallagher and Caicedo are particularly valuable to Chelsea, yet with that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea star who’s now worth even more than the two midfielders.

What Chelsea paid for Cole Palmer

Having progressed through the ranks at Manchester City, Cole Palmer finally earned his breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign, making four appearances.

In the following season, he’d go on to feature more frequently, playing 14 Premier League games but only starting twice, picking up just one assist.

Cole Palmer

Nevertheless, last summer, Chelsea saw the potential in the number 20 and took the risk of paying £40m to acquire the forward on Deadline Day.

Todd Boehly believed that he would play a huge role in the rebuilding of the club, and Palmer signed a seven-year contract, which has the option to extend for a further 12 months.

But absolutely nobody would have expected the extent of what was to come from the England international.

Cole Palmer’s value in 2024

It took the left-footed ace three games to truly get into the swing of things at his new club, but after scoring and assisting in a 4-1 victory over Burnley, there was no looking back.

The 22-year-old simply kept scoring while also proving that he can serve as a creative outlet, even single-handedly dragging Chelsea over the line in some games.

Throughout the campaign, Palmer started 29 Premier League matches, scoring an incredible 22 goals and registering 11 assists, which truly does make him “world-class,” as dubbed by teammate Carney Chukwuemeka.

To top off a perfect individual season, the former Citizen won the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award, but what is Palmer worth right now?

Cole Palmer

£85m

Florian Wirtz

£85m

Jamal Musiala

£85m

Arda Guler

£51m

Bruno Fernandes

£43m

Well, according to CIES’ Football Observatory, Palmer is estimated to be worth £85m, the joint-highest figure alongside Fernandez.

This also means that the versatile attacker is worth more than Gallagher and Caicedo, £51m and £68m, which is incredible considering the latter arrived for a record-breaking fee of £115.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo

For further context on just how valuable he is, Palmer is currently also the joint-highest-valued attacking midfielder in the world, alongside German duo Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

The fact that Palmer registered the most goal contributions in the entire Premier League last season is just one reason why his value has skyrocketed.

However, what will please Boehly is that if Palmer has an impact at the European Championships with England this summer, his estimated worth will only increase even further.

Overall, the signing of Palmer was without doubt the bargain of the 2023/24 season, and it’s fair to say that Chelsea truly hit the jackpot on their £40m superstar.

Chelsea have been told that a club would accept an initial £50 million bid for their star forward, with chairman Todd Boehly looking to reinforce the squad.

Chelsea chasing new attacker as pressure surrounds Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has endured a topsy-turvy debut season at Chelsea, with speculation consistently surrounding his future in bouts of serious pressure on the Argentine.

Suggestion Chelsea could table offer to sign £52 million star from PSG

While their form has picked up somewhat lately, barring that terrible 5-0 defeat to Arsenal, Pochettino has conceded that his job at Chelsea is far from safe – and he even admitted this week that it wouldn't be the end of the world if they decided to sack him.

"It is not going to be the first time that a coaching staff decide at the end of the season not to keep going. But understand that it is always the opposite way, always the owners or the sporting directors," said Pochettino on his Chelsea future.

Mauricio Pochettino's worst results at Chelsea in first season

Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea

Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea

Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea

Chelsea 2-4 Wolves

Chelsea 0-2 Brentford

"They can say tomorrow 'until here, we arrive' or maybe tomorrow I can say 'look, I want to leave.' There are two parts who can take a decision. It is not only because Chelsea are not happy, the owners are not happy, the sporting directors are not happy, maybe we are not happy because we arrived here with some job to do but in the end it has not happened what we expect.

Noni Madueke

"Maybe we are not happy. I don't say that I am not happy but always it is lacking one side. Maybe the other side say 'OK, maybe until here' and we split. It is not a problem. It is not going to be the end of the world."

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Pochettino's future, Chelsea are reliably believed to be chasing a new forward this summer, with Crystal Palace star Michael Olise of serious interest to them.

Indeed, reports have claimed that Chelsea are even willing to offer Raheem Sterling in a swap deal for Olise, as Boehly also looks to trim the squad and balance the books in terms of PSR.

Chelsea told Palace would accept initial £50 million bid

Now, according to TEAMtalk, it is believed Palace would accept an initial £50 million bid from Chelsea for Olise – or from any other interested party – as long as the overall offer eventually reached £65 million via add-ons and other clauses.

The 22-year-old has been a star player under both Roy Hodgson and Oliver Glasner this season, and his time at Selhurst Park may well be ending soon as teams across England display a tempting interest.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

“I have seen him for 10 days less than I have seen the others," said Hodgson on Olise last season. "What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

£25,000-p/w Leeds star who wants to stay at Elland Road expected to leave

A Leeds United star could be forced to leave the club against his wishes this summer, according to recent reports.

Leeds summer transfer rumours

Leeds fell short of automatic promotion back to the Premier League in the normal Championship campaign after they won just one of their last five league outings in 2023/24. However, Daniel Farke's side can still secure a swift return to the top flight this season via the play-offs. The Whites crushed Norwich City last week and are due to meet Southampton in the showpiece final on May 26.

Should Leeds go on to beat the Saints in the play-off final and earn promotion to the Premier League, it is likely to dictate what business they do this summer, with some of the higher-profile names linked with the Whites likely only viable transfer options if they have Premier League money to spend. For example, Leeds chiefs would reportedly 'jump at the chance' to re-sign Raphinha from FC Barcelona.

Elsewhere, West Ham defender Ben Johnson is set to be available as a free agent as Leeds wait to snap him up, while the Peacocks are also thought to be considering a move for former midfielder Kalvin Phillips

.

Pundit John Wenham also expressed his view recently that Leeds may table a "very" quick bid for Joe Rodon if they achieve promotion, coming after reports he could cost as little as £10 million.

However, it is not just Leeds' incomings which could be impacted by the league they are plying their trade in come the start of 2024/25.

£25,000-p/w Leeds star expected to leave

This comes after a report from The Sunday People claims that while defender Liam Cooper is desperate to stay at Leeds this summer, Farke is waiting to see if promotion is secured to the Premier League before making a decision on his future.

David Anderson has suggested that Cooper’s Leeds future will be decided after the final whistle next Sunday, and while the Scottish defender is said to want to remain at the club and reach ten years at Elland Road, they look “unlikely” to offer him a new deal if promotion is secured.

Liam Cooper

Despite the aforementioned report, Daniel Farke is clearly an admirer of Cooper and the work he has put in during his time in North Yorkshire. Speaking earlier this year, the German labelled both Cooper and the also departing Luke Ayling as "outstanding".

“They are outstanding. Luke has played a lot. Liam started the first game, sacrificed his body to score. Now, he has to accept he is just a sub in the 90th minute. Big personalities expect to play,” Farke said.

“It can be a problem. How they have handled it, they know I value them. They are not 25 anymore, this league is relentless. Not easy to accept, quite difficult. But they are outstanding. They give everything.”

Cooper, who joined Leeds United from Chesterfield in 2014 for around £500,000, has notched 284 appearances across all competitions for the Whites, scoring 11 and assisting six in that time.

Barcelona player ratings vs Athletic Club: Lamine Yamal lights up Blaugrana's home opener as relentless Robert Lewandowski makes it two wins from two for Hansi Flick

The teenager opened the scoring on Saturday before the Poland international netted the winner after twice hitting the woodwork

Having opened their La Liga campaign with a win over Valencia, Barcelona will have been acutely aware that, after Real Madrid dropped points on the opening weekend, they had the chance to put further daylight between themselves and their eternal rivals with a victory over Athletic Club on Saturday. Hansi Flick's team did were made to work for it, but they did just that, recording a 2-1 win over last season's Copa del Rey champions.

Lamine Yamal, perhaps unsurprisingly, was the man to open the scoring for Barcelona, as he took aim from the edge of the box and fired in via a deflection off Yeray Alvarez. Robert Lewandowski subsequenly hit the crossbar before, on 40 minutes, Athletic screamed for a penalty after Pau Cubarsi appeared to bring down Alejandro Berenguer. Barcelona actually broke and appealed for a spot-kick of their own, but VAR intervened and the visitors got the initial decision, with. Oihand Sancet converting from 12 yards.

After the break, Lewandowski rattled the woodwork for the second time when he somehow managed to direct a close-ranger header against the post. However, in the 74th minute, he finally got his goal as Alex Padilla parried Pedri's cross into the box and it fell at the feet of the Lewandowski, who lashed the ball home.

From there, Barca were able to see the victory out with a minimum of fuss, and now have two wins from their opening two games under Flick.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):

Appeared to injure his arm in the first half but played on. Sent the wrong way from the spot-kick but had a real command of his area otherwise.

Jules Kounde (6/10):

Matched up against Williams and could not keep a lid on the dazzling attacker in the first half. Grew into the game, though, and managed to keep the Spain star relatively quiet after the break, contributing to Barca's dominance in the second period.

Pau Cubarsi (5/10):

So assured for his age but he made a clumsy challenge on Berenguer and conceded a penalty late in the first half, from which the visitors levelled. Recovered well, but it was an indicator of his inexperience.

Inigo Martinez (6/10):

So dependable in the air. Some excellent distribution too. An obvious leader in defence.

Alejandro Balde (7/10):

Exceptional in transition, if a little lightweight defensively. Particularly effective down the left in the second half; his engine is remarkable.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Marc Bernal (6/10):

Tidy on the ball in midfield and adventurous with his dribbling, twice beating the visitors' press with smart feet. It feels pertinent to point out he is still just 17. Subbed late.

Pedri (6/10):

So rarely gives the ball away with his passing, but he couldn't make many inroads into the final third, until his cross was parried in the build-up to Lewandowski's winner.

Raphinha (6/10):

Always willing to run and receive, and showcased some lovely footwork while in the No.10 position. Inconsistent in his passing, though, as he showed he is capable of eye-of-the-needle through-balls as well as passes that completely stunted Barca's momentum.

Getty Images SportAttack

Lamine Yamal (7/10):

Barca's resident star boy opened the scoring, firing in from the edge of the box via a deflection. Consistently willing to take on his man, and mucked in defensively too. An all-action display.

Robert Lewandowski (8/10):

Hit the crossbar and the post, and forced a wonderful save from Padilla in Athletic's goal. Did everything he could to score and was finally rewarded in the 74th minute, firing home after the goalkeeper parried Pedri's cross. A brilliant display and, on another day, he walks away with a hat-trick.

Ferran Torres (5/10):

Always willing to go at his full-back and beat him repeatedly. Struggled to convert successful dribbles into shots on goal or crosses into the box, however, with both Yamal and Lewandowski carrying more of a threat. Subbed.

Fermin Lopez (5/10):

Came on for Torres, but equally as peripheral during his time on the pitch.

Eric Garcia (N/A):

On for Bernal.

Gerard Martin (N/A):

An injury-time introduction.

Pau Victor (N/A):

On for the final minutes.

Hansi Flick (7/10):

Got this one pretty much spot on. Barcelona were largely dominant throughout the game and were only really threatened on the transition with the pace of Williams. With Yamal and Lewandowski firmly up and running, he will be delighted.

USWNT player ratings vs Germany: Attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman shred Germany, make Americans legitimate Olympic contenders

Attacking stars can't be stopped, as decisive 4-1 rout of Germany puts USWNT in conversation for gold medal in Paris Games

On paper, this version of the U.S. women's national team attack is perhaps the best in the world. In practice, though? It had never quite come to fruition. The front line let this team down last summer and, despite some highs in the lead-up to the Olympics, the lows led to concerns about how this group would perform under the bright lights.

Those concerns lasted just two games. As it turns out, the paper was right: this attack is special.

You don't know who it will be on a given day. In the Olympic opener, it was Mallory Swanson with two goals in a win over Zambia. On Sunday, it was Sophia Smith, who scored a huge brace of her own in a dominant 4-1 group stage victory over Germany. And don't write off Trinity Rodman, as she was an absolute nightmare to deal with all day long for the Germans.

That trio was at its best on Sunday. From the opening whistle, all were dangerous, and it didn't take long for them to strike. Smith cashed in first, crashing home a Rodman cross to the back post to give the U.S. the lead. Even after giving one back – the first goal conceded in the first 472 minutes of the Emma Hayes era with the U.S- heads didn't drop. Instead, Swanson just jumped on a rebound to make it 2-1 and immediately send a message back to Germany.

Smith scored the third: a lucky deflection that effectively put the game away. Lynn Williams, who came on to replace a tiring Smith, then added one for good measure. Through two games, that's seven goals for the USWNT, and each of them has been scored by attacking stars.

That's an intimidating proposition for opponents for the rest of these Olympics, and a welcome sight for USWNT fans. The attack is firing on all cylinders and, in this sort of form, can they fire all the way to a gold medal?

With the win, the U.S. joined Spain as the first teams to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The USWNT has now made it out of the group in all eight trips to the Olympics and has medaled in six of its seven previous Olympic appearances.

Hayes was level-headed after the win, saying "We haven’t done anything, let’s be frank. We’ve got three points against a really good German team. That’s is all it is, nothing more.”

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Alyssa Naeher (5/10):

A big mess on Germany's opener. Bad giveaway and then could have done better on the shot. Fortunately, it didn't matter much and she did make some good saves later on.

    Crystal Dunn (8/10):

Fantastic game from the left-back, who has gone above and beyond to prove she still is this team's starter. Fantastic defensively and got forward well. Can't ask for much more.

    Tierna Davidson (6/10):

Was playing really well before her injury. Was forced out just before halftime, which is a big, big concern given the lack of centerback depth.

    Naomi Girma (8/10):

Even with Germany pushing so hard on the counter, Girma still made it all look easy. She always does, doesn't she?

    Emily Fox (7/10):

Played more as a right-sided centerback at times with Dunn getting forward. Did fantastic defensively, too, making several big tackles when Germany got forward.

    Midfield

    Sam Coffey (7/10):

Earned an early yellow card but managed the game well from there on out. Makes such a difference as that No. 6.

    Lindsey Horan (5/10):

Nowhere near as good as she was against Zambia. A few too many giveaways from a player who rarely does that.

    Rose Lavelle (6/10):

Played a big part in the opener and had a few bright moments on both sides of the ball. If the U.S. can get a vintage Lavelle going forward, look out.

  • Attack

    Sophia Smith (8/10):

A big performance from Smith, who shook off injury concerns (having left in the first half of the Zambia match) to score a brace. The second goal was a bit fortunate, but Smith will take it. After struggling a bit last year, Smith looks so much more comfortable as part of this front three.

    Mallory Swanson (7/10):

That's three goals in two games, and this was a big one. Swanson was smart enough to pounce on a rebound and clinical enough to finish it. You make your own luck in most cases, and that's what Swanson did.

    Trinity Rodman (7/10):

Fantastic on that right-hand side, even if she never got her goal. Routinely toasted her defenders and put in some ridiculously dangerous crosses that could have, and should have, ended in goals.

    Emily Sonnett (7/10):

Tough spot to be thrown into, but she did well. U.S. looked just as strong even after Davidson was forced out, so give Sonnett her credit.

    Lynn Williams (8/10):

Came on late and scored her goal with a fantastic finish. Not a bad weapon to have off the bench, huh?

    Jenna Nighswonger (N/A):

Came on for a 90th-minute cameo.

    Casey Krueger (N/A):

    Same as above.

    Emma Hayes (8/10):

Absolutely nailed everything from lineup to tactics. Under Hayes, this USWNT group looks like a whole new team. What a difference she makes.

Chelsea now in pole position to sign £150m star for Poch

Despite splashing the cash last summer to welcome a number of fresh faces, Chelsea's struggles have only continued this season, as they remain rooted in the Premier League's mid-table. Reports suggest, however, that they could have their best chance yet to land a game-changing star.

Chelsea transfer news

It's a rare day when Chelsea aren't stealing the headlines for their transfer business, especially under Todd Boehly. The American owner has spent endless amounts on reinforcements since the start of his tenure in 2022, but to no avail. Even after the Blues' failure though, Boehly looks set to continue his transfer tactic, throwing deals at the wall and hoping for something to finally stick at Stamford Bridge.

After Chelsea's 2-2 draw against Brentford, Chelsea fans aired their discontent over Mauricio Pochettino's tenure and Boehly's ownership in yet another moment to forget.

Just where the Blues go from here on the pitch is anyone's guess, but they could at least receive a boost away from Stamford Bridge. According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are now alone in their pursuit of Rafael Leao, with Paris Saint-Germain turning their attention elsewhere.

Chelsea now eyeing move to sign new £26m gem for Poch this summer

He’s one for the future.

By
Tom Cunningham

Mar 3, 2024

The Premier League giants are now seemingly perfectly placed to secure a deal for the AC Milan star if they decide to trigger his hefty reported release clause of €175m (£150m) this summer.

With some higher-ups at Stamford Bridge happy to see Raheem Sterling leave this summer, Leao could quickly become the perfect upgrade on the England international to help finally steer a sinking ship under Pochettino next season.

"Decisive" Leao would be an upgrade Sterling

As Sterling potentially departs, Leao would be an ideal replacement and upgrade for Chelsea to turn towards this summer. The Milan man, despite his hefty release clause, would be more than worth the pursuit, as a player who's previously earned high praise in Serie A.

Former Lazio star Macro Parolo previously sung the praises of the winger, telling DAZN via Milan Reports: "Leao is establishing himself as one of the 5-6 most decisive players in Serie A. When he takes the ball, something always happens, he has become bad and now when he aims for the goal he does it to score. He can easily go to double figures every year and become one of the strongest offensive wingers in the world."

The stats, meanwhile, speak for themselves when compared to Sterling's numbers so far this season:

With that said, whilst PSG's attention is reportedly away from Leao amid their attempts to replace Kylian Mbappe, Chelsea should swoop in and land one of the summer's biggest deals. The AC Milan star would likely finally break the trend of Chelsea failure.
