Birmingham Phoenix

Last season: Runners-up
Coach: Daniel Vettori
Captain: Moeen Ali
Overseas players: Matthew Wade, Adam Milne, Kane Richardson, Imran TahirKey man: Liam Livingstone was the standout player in the Hundred’s first season, in a league of his own in batting statistics: he scored 50% more runs than his nearest contender and hit 27 sixes, a dozen more than anyone else. He comes into the tournament off a quiet white-ball summer for England but his all-round ability and versatility means he remains Phoenix’s most important player. One to watch: Henry Brookes was retained despite missing the first season through injury and bowled with good pace – though mixed returns – in the Blast. Phoenix’s English seamers were expensive throughout last season and they will be desperate for Brookes to step up, especially after Olly Stone and Chris Woakes were ruled out through injury.Verdict: Phoenix fell short in the final last year after topping the group and look just as strong this season – though injuries could be an issue, with Tom Abell (hamstring) ruled out and Adam Milne (Achilles) a doubt. Matthew Wade is an astute signing who should be fully available and will form an eye-catching opening partnership with Will Smeed.Possible XI: 1 Matthew Wade (wk), 2 Will Smeed, 3 Moeen Ali (capt), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Chris Benjamin, 6 Dan Mousley, 7 Benny Howell, 8 Tom Helm, 9 Adam Milne/Kane Richardson, 10 Henry Brookes, 11 Imran TahirEoin Morgan will be hoping to lift Spirit after the London side finished bottom•PA Images via Getty Images

London Spirit

Last season: 8th
Coach: Trevor Bayliss
Captain: Eoin Morgan
Overseas players: Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, Nathan Ellis, Josh Inglis (cover for Maxwell)Key man: After pulling out of last season, Glenn Maxwell is due to play around five group games this year before leaving for Australia’s series against Zimbabwe. He will be tasked with invigorating one of the competition’s weakest batting line-ups, which made 150 only once last year (and still lost that game). One to watch: Dan Lawrence impressed during England’s Test series in the Caribbean in March but has struggled with injury this year and slipped down the pecking order. His red-ball ambitions have interrupted his development as a T20 batter but he showed glimpses of his form in the Blast and will form part of a powerful middle order alongside Maxwell and Eoin Morgan.Verdict: Things can only get better for Spirit after a rock-bottom finish in the competition’s first season – but exactly how much better they get remains to be seen. Their squad contains a number of experienced names but their fortunes may depend on whether Morgan, Ravi Bopara and Kieron Pollard (who may not start the competition as he returns from injury) can find form from the middle order. There is a Hampshire flavour to their side, thanks to the influence of Dimi Mascarenhas as assistant coach.Possible XI: 1 Ben McDermott (wk), 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Glenn Maxwell, 4 Dan Lawrence, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jordan Thompson, 8 Liam Dawson, 9 Brad Wheal, 10 Nathan Ellis, 11 Mason CraneJos Buttler will be available for a full season with Manchester Originals•Getty Images

Manchester Originals

Last season: 6th
Coach: Simon Katich
Captain: Jos Buttler
Overseas players: Andre Russell, Wanindu Hasaranga, Sean Abbott, Ashton TurnerKey man: Jos Buttler’s absence from England’s Test set-up means that he will be available to open the batting, captain and keep wicket for the whole season, a huge boost to Originals’ prospects. He will form part of a destructive opening partnership with Phil Salt – one which could be replicated in the T20 World Cup, if Salt can find his feet in the Hundred. One to watch: He struggled in the Hundred last year and has not had a brilliant season for Somerset, but Tom Lammonby could be an influential player for Original – not least as one of only two left-handers among their main batting options (Essex’s Paul Walter is the other). Games at Emirates Old Trafford typically feature a high proportion of overs bowled by spinners and Lammonby will need to address a poor career record against the turning ball.Verdict: Originals are well-placed to improve on a disappointing first season after some canny recruitment and in Buttler, Wanindu Hasaranga and Andre Russell, they have three world-class T20 players in their ranks, as well as several useful role players. Their bowling attack is spin-heavy and they should thrive at home – if the weather holds. Jamie Overton’s injury is a blow.Possible XI: 1 Jos Buttler (capt/wk), 2 Phil Salt, 3 Wayne Madsen, 4 Laurie Evans, 5 Tom Lammonby, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Tom Hartley, 10 Richard Gleeson, 11 Matt ParkinsonDavid Willey will offer with bat and ball for Superchargers•Getty Images

Northern Superchargers

Last season: 5th
Coach: James Foster
Captain: Faf du Plessis
Overseas players: Dwayne Bravo, du Plessis, Wahab Riaz, David WieseKey man: David Willey is a hugely valuable player at this level: he will take the new ball and the format enables him to bowl the majority of his spell in the powerplay, and Superchargers will look to get the most out of his batting by using him as a floater in the middle order. Deputised as captain last year but will hand back over to his Royal Challengers Bangalore team-mate Faf du Plessis, who missed the first season with concussion. One to watch: Callum Parkinson only played twice last season but is a reliable T20 operator and should play as the second spinner ahead of Roelof van der Merwe. He mainly bowls in the middle of the innings but has also proved himself in the powerplay for Leicestershire in the Blast, offering du Plessis some flexibility.Verdict: Old blokes win stuff, according to Dan Christian, and Superchargers have assembled the most experienced squad in the competition. They were the worst death-bowling side last year and have looked to plug that gap by signing Dwayne Bravo and Wahab Riaz, two veterans of the franchise circuit. Ben Stokes’ absence – even for a handful of games – is a blow while Harry Brook and Matthew Potts’ Test call-ups will test their depth.Possible XI: 1 Faf du Plessis (capt), 2 Adam Lyth, 3 David Willey, 4 Harry Brook, 5 Adam Hose, 6 John Simpson (wk), 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Matthew Potts, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Callum ParkinsonSunil Narine is back with Oval Invincibles this summer•Getty Images

Oval Invincibles

Last season: 4th
Coach: Tom Moody
Captain: Sam Billings
Overseas players: Sunil Narine, Rilee Rossouw, Hilton Cartwright, Mohammad HasnainKey man: Invincibles unexpectedly released Sunil Narine ahead of the draft this year but immediately used their Right-to-Match card on him, suggesting he was always part of their plans for 2022. He had a solid first year in the Hundred, often bowling his final set of five balls at the death, and warmed up for this season by playing 14 Blast games for Surrey, conceding less than a run a ball across the competition. One to watch: Jordan Cox was Invincibles’ wildcard signing and was retained for 2022 despite the fact he did not play a game in the Hundred. He starred in Kent’s middle order in their title-winning Blast season last summer, hitting 58 not out off 28 balls in the final, and spent most of this year at No. 3. He should be part of Invincibles’ starting XI this year – and might well be one of the best fielders in the competition.Verdict: Invincibles were in the qualification picture throughout last year but fell at the last hurdle, losing to Brave in their final group game and thereby missing out on the knockout stages. They are well-placed to improve on that this season, but will need Tom Curran to prove his fitness after a long lay-off or the bowling attack may be slightly light.Possible XI: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Will Jacks, 3 Rilee Rossouw (misses first game), 4 Sam Billings (capt/wk), 5 Jordan Cox, 6 Sunil Narine, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Danny Briggs, 10 Reece Topley, 11 Mohammad HasnainChris Jordan and Tymal Mills were key performers in Brave’s title win•Getty Images

Southern Brave

Last season: Champions
Coach: Mahela Jayawardene
Captain: James Vince
Overseas players: Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Finn Allen, Paul Stirling (cover for Stoinis)Key man: James Vince is in the form of his life, leading the Blast’s run-scoring charts as he captained Hampshire to the title, and remains an outside shot for England’s T20 World Cup squad if a first-choice batter goes down injured. He led Brave well in the inaugural Hundred and took bold selection calls, often picking a solitary spinner even if it meant leaving an established player out.One to watch: Rehan Ahmed had never played a professional T20 match when Brave spent £50,000 on him at the draft but increasingly looks like a canny pick-up, after 19 wickets for Leicestershire in the Blast and a first England Lions call-up for their 50-over games against South Africa. He is still only 17, but could be Brave’s second spinner when conditions dictate.Verdict: Defending champions relied heavily on their bowling attack last year but Tymal Mills (toe) and George Garton (long Covid) have been struggling with fitness and form. Their batting line-up is full of power – not least Tim David, the competition’s best-value player at £50,000 – but retaining their title will not be easy.Possible XI: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk, misses first game), 2 Marcus Stoinis/Paul Stirling, 3 James Vince, 4 Alex Davies, 5 Tim David, 6 Ross Whiteley, 7 George Garton/James Fuller, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Craig Overton, 10 Jake Lintott, 11 Tymal MillsTrent Rockets got as far as the eliminator in 2021•Getty Images

Trent Rockets

Last season: Eliminator
Coach: Andy Flower
Captain: Lewis Gregory
Overseas players: Rashid Khan, Colin Munro, Marchant de Lange, Daniel Sams, Tabraiz Shamsi (cover for Rashid)Key man: Rockets have made clear that they will look to play in a more attacking style with the bat this year and few batters in the world can set the tone for a white-ball innings like Alex Hales: his powerplay strike rate this year is an eye-watering 175.47. He didn’t reach 50 in the Hundred’s first season, a record he will be looking to set straight. One to watch: Tom Kohler-Cadmore was an eye-catching £125,000 signing in the draft but has impressed on the franchise circuit and has an unusually good record against spin for a young English batter who has played extensively in Asia. He has a solid Blast for Yorkshire, scoring half-centuries in both their knockout games, and offers a keeping option.Verdict: Rockets look like an impressive all-round side on paper, but how will they cope without Rashid Khan? Rashid will only play a handful of games due to clashes with Afghanistan’s series against Ireland and the Asia Cup and while Tabraiz Shamsi is a solid option, Rashid is impossible to replace. They should be in knockout contention come the end of August.Possible XI: 1 Dawid Malan, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Colin Munro, 4 Joe Root, 5 Tom Kohler-Cadmore (wk), 6 Lewis Gregory (capt), 7 Daniel Sams, 8 Samit Patel, 9 Rashid Khan/Tabraiz Shamsi, 10 Matthew Carter, 11 Luke WoodTom Banton will be hoping to improve on his first season with Welsh Fire•Getty Images

Welsh Fire

Last season: 7th
Coach: Gary Kirsten
Captain: Josh Cobb
Overseas players: Adam Zampa, David Miller, Naseem Shah, Noor AhmadKey man: Bowling spin at Sophia Gardens is often a brutal task but Adam Zampa’s method should suit conditions before he leaves for Australia duty. Cardiff’s short boundaries are incredibly short but his natural length is relatively short for a legspinner and he will drive the ball into the pitch to force batters to hit towards the long square boundaries. One to watch: Tom Banton made 96 runs across eight innings in the Hundred’s first season and was fortunate that market dynamics – specifically, limited availability for most leading overseas players – saw him re-signed for £125,000 at the draft. He found form towards the end of the Blast after a quiet start and warmed up for the Hundred with a maiden first-class hundred as a concussion replacement.Verdict: Significantly stronger than last year and should be in the qualification mix but availability of overseas players is a mixed bag (Naseem Shah is yet to arrive) and balancing the side could prove tricky. Fire’s batting line-up will be among the most destructive in the competition if it clicks – even after Jonny Bairstow’s withdrawal – but their bowling is more vulnerable.Possible XI: 1 Tom Banton, 2 Joe Clarke (wk), 3 Ben Duckett, 4 Ollie Pope, 5 David Miller (misses first game), 6 Josh Cobb, 7 Ryan Higgins, 8 Adam Zampa, 9 Noor Ahmad, 10 David Payne, 11 Jake Ball

Harbhajan Singh demolishes Australia singlehandedly

No bowler has ever taken a bigger share of his team’s wickets than Harbhajan did in that epic series in 2001

S Rajesh22-Mar-2020Coming into the 2001 home series against Australia, Harbhajan Singh had taken all of 21 wickets from eight Tests, at an average of 38.57, and he hadn’t played a Test in more than 15 months. Then came that series – which finished on this day 19 years ago – that changed his life: 32 wickets in three Tests, including 28 in the last two, a series win against the marauding Australians, and a place in Indian cricketing greatness in one of the best series of all time.ESPNcricinfo LtdUsually a series win against such formidable opposition needs a collective effort from the bowlers, but Singh managed it singlehandedly: while he took 32 wickets, the next best was a measly three each by Zaheer Khan and Sachin Tendulkar. That means Singh took 10.7 times as many wickets as the next highest wicket-taker for India in the series. In a series of three or more Tests, that is easily the best ratio ever. George Lohmann comes in next, for his 35-wicket haul in South Africa way back in 1896. The next best for England in that three Test series was five wickets, by Sammy Woods and Christopher Heseltine.Australia’s Ray Bright took 15 wickets in three Tests in Pakistan in 1980 – a series in which the next highest was three (by Dennis Lillee and Greg Chappell) but unlike the previous two efforts, this one was in a losing cause, as Pakistan won the series 1-0. Incidentally that was also Lillee’s only series in India or Pakistan – his three wickets came at a cost of 303 runs and an average of 101.Seventeen years after Lohmann dominated South Africa, Sydney Barnes repeated the dose, taking 49 wickets in four Tests in 1913-14, with the next best wicket-taker taking only ten. More recently, Richard Hadlee (in Australia) and Muttiah Muralitharan (in England) were similarly dominant.

Harbhajan’s 32 wickets in the 2001 series came out of a total of 49 wickets taken by the Indian bowlers. While his 32 wickets came at an average of 17.03, the other Indian bowlers collectively took 17 at 63.24. That, in a nutshell, captures the difference between Singh and the rest of the Indian attack in the series. In percentage terms too, Singh’s 65.3% is the highest proportion of team wickets taken by a bowler in a series of three or more Tests, though on this attribute the gap between him and the rest isn’t as large: both Bright and Muralitharan took around 65% of their team’s wickets (excluding run-outs) on the tours to Pakistan and England.ESPNcricinfo LtdOverall, Singh’s 32-wicket haul is the fourth largest in a series of three or fewer Tests. Three bowlers – Lohmann, Barnes and Hadlee – have taken more, but in terms of impact, it is arguable if any bowler has shaped a series scoreline like Singh did in that epic in 2001.

Dodgers Fans Greeted George Springer With Chorus of Boos in Game 3 of World Series

Rather unsurprisingly, George Springer received a less than warm welcome from fans at Dodger Stadium on Monday.

When Springer was introduced during warmups, boos from Dodgers fans cascaded across the stadium. The Blue Jays' slugger received a similar response when he stepped up to the plate as the game's first batter.

Of course, Springer was a member of the 2017 Astros World Series team that defeated the Dodgers in the Fall Classic. That team was later found to have been illegally stealing signs, which resulted in discipline for various members of the organization, but not players.

Since then, Springer, as well as anyone from that Astros team, has effectively been public enemy No. 1 in Los Angeles whenever they visit Dodger Stadium. Springer, eight years removed from that scandal, is still hearing the jeers despite being with a new team.

Toronto was expecting Springer to be booed in L.A. Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement joked that he often joins in on the booing from opposing fans, suggesting that it actually serves to motivate Springer, who has made a habit of silencing his doubters with his play on the field.

Washington: Heartening to take 20 wickets on this Delhi surface

If the Chennai defeat to England in 2021 made India switch from flat home pitches that took turn in the second innings to square turners, the shock 3-0 reverse to New Zealand last year made them rethink the latter strategy.During the ongoing two-Test series against West Indies, India have stated their desire to play on balanced pitches that give batters the chance of scoring big runs, particularly in the first innings. The plan worked out perfectly in the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad, where India rushed to an innings win in three days, but it may have hit a bit of a snag in Delhi, where India are poised to take the series 2-0 going into day five, but only after their bowlers slogged for nearly 200 overs — all in one go following their decision to enforce the follow-on — to bowl West Indies out twice.Related

  • Kuldeep's stump vision defies flat Delhi pitch

  • India 58 runs away from 2-0 sweep of West Indies

  • Centuries and time at the crease ease West Indies' crisis

Could this prompt another rethink? India allrounder Washington Sundar isn’t thinking about all that; for now he’s happy to experience the variety of challenges that different venues throw up.”It’s quite different in different venues, isn’t it?” he said in his press conference at the end of day four. “This I would say is a typical Delhi wicket, where there’s not much bounce, and obviously there wasn’t a lot of turn on offer in this game. But yeah, different venues play quite differently, and that’s the beauty of this format in particular.India were on the field for over 200 overs in Delhi after enforcing the follow-on against West Indies•Associated Press

“We play in a lot of different conditions, be it home or away, and obviously all those conditions and the opposition challenge our skillsets, and that’s the beauty of this format. We keep going. We try and assess what’s really required in those conditions and really be on top of a game and do something special for the team.”India’s spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington bowled 143.5 overs across the two West Indies innings, and picked up 13 wickets between them.”On this kind of a wicket you just need to be patient and try and hit those [good] areas more consistently, and that’s the only challenge,” Washington said. “It’s good to be bowling long spells, and it’s very heartening to have actually taken 20 wickets on a wicket like this. All of the bowlers bowled really well, even the fast bowlers bowled their heart out every single spell, so it’s very heartening.”John Campbell and Shai Hope led West Indies’ fight in their follow-on innings, scoring centuries and putting on 177 for the third wicket. Washington praised them for settling into their partnership by taking calculated risks to spread the field.”Honestly, Campbell and Hope played really well,” Washington said. “They took their chances, and once the field was spread out they were really sensible with their game as well.”India, Washington felt, were well-prepared for spending long hours on the field, having played their last Test series in England, where all five Tests went into the fifth day. “The England series definitely made us understand what it actually feels like to be on the field for five days, because even in England we fielded for about 180-200 overs every game, so this definitely isn’t something very new to us.”2:43

Chopra: Credit to West Indies for pushing India into day five

Since his return to the Test team during the New Zealand series last year, Washington has often played as one of three allrounders in India’s line-up. This has meant he’s ended up playing more of a batting-heavy role in some games and a bowling-heavy role in others; in this series, he’s only got to bat once so far in three innings, with India declaring after he had faced 13 balls in that one innings.”It’s just been a blessing, honestly,” Washington said. “To be an allrounder is really heartening, because you’re always in the game, either with the ball or bat, and you have a great opportunity with both skillsets to make an impact for the team and eventually win the game for the team. I’ve got to thank god for all the skills he’s blessed me with.”In Test cricket it’s better to have as many allrounders [as possible], because if you go back and see, most of the teams who have dominated Test cricket for many years, I think they’ve had good-quality allrounders in their line-up, and I’d say we’ve got some really quality allrounders in our team as well.”While this is not necessarily true of the West Indies teams that dominated world cricket in the 1970s and 80s or the Australia team of the 2000s, it is certainly true of the India sides that won every home series they played from 2013 until the loss to New Zealand last year, with spin-bowling allrounders Jadeja, R Ashwin and later Axar Patel and Washington himself adding depth and heft to both the bowling and batting.Starting their fourth-innings pursuit of 121 late on Monday evening, India began as if they were looking to end the game on day four itself, with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting two fours in the first over before falling in the second while attempting a big hit down the ground. They knuckled down thereafter to ensure no other wicket fell, with KL Rahul and B Sai Sudharsan putting on an unbroken 54 to take India into day five needing a further 58 runs to win.”A lot of you all also would have liked it if the game got over today,” Washington joked to the assembled mediapersons. “Jaiswal did his best — on another day he would have definitely finished [it] today.”

Jhon Duran sued! Ex-Aston Villa striker subject of criminal complaint from Galatasaray after goal celebration for Fenerbahce in ill-tempered derby

Galatasaray have escalated their protest over Jhon Duran’s controversial celebration in Sunday’s heated Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce by filing a criminal complaint with the Anadolu Courthouse. The two giants shared the spoils following a 1-1 draw in the 14th matchday of the Turkish Super Lig.

  • Complaint lands at Anadolu Courthouse after fiery derby draw

It is mostly a fiesty affair when Galatasaray and Fenerbahce lock horns in Istanbul. On Sunday evening, Leroy Sane handed the visitors a lead just before the half-hour mark. Fenerbahce were chasing for the bulk of the game, and just when it seemed that they would have to leave the pitch empty-handed, Duran struck deep into stoppage time. He went on to celebrate in a manner that Galatasaray insist was both provocative and indecent. Though the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had already dismissed their initial request for disciplinary action, the club elected to take the matter to the courts, accusing the 21-year-old forward of harassment and indecent exposure.

After the match, manager Domenico Tedesco heaped praise on his players. He said: "We wanted to start the first half lightly. We experienced this in the Beşiktaş derby. We played the ball a lot in that match, made dangerous passes, and fell behind 2-0. So, our plan today was to play simple for the first 10-15 minutes. What we wanted to see was Galatasaray defending in their own penalty area. We wanted to play with intensity throughout the match, and I think we did that well. Going down 1-0 at the start of the match is partly due to Sane's individual contribution. In these kinds of matches, things like this can happen against players like that. We controlled the game both at the end of the first half and in the second."

Duran’s meteoric rise before the Turkish storm

Duran left Aston Villa in January in a blockbuster £71 million ($88m) deal to join Al-Nassr, where he continued his prolific form with 12 goals in 18 appearances for the Saudi Pro League club. Before that, he had been one of the Premier League’s most explosive young forwards. Across the first half of the 2024–25 campaign, he hit 12 goals in all competitions for Villa, including spectacular long-range strikes against Everton and Bayern Munich that underlined his potential as one of Europe’s most dynamic attacking prospects. Fenerbahçe secured his services on a season-long loan during the summer window, hoping he would provide the extra cutting edge required in a title race that shows no sign of letting up. In his five Super Lig appearances so far, he has registered two goals and two assists, including the derby equaliser that ignited this week’s uproar.

  • Tff declines to punish Duran as derby fallout intensifies

Sunday’s derby was tense even by Istanbul standards, with both teams desperate to seize the psychological upper hand in the tight title race. When Duran levelled the match late on, the stadium erupted in noise, but his subsequent celebration sparked immediate fury from Galatasaray players and later from club officials.

Galatasaray officially requested that the TFF take action, but the disciplinary board reviewed the footage and concluded that Duran would not be referred to the Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK). Several individuals from both clubs were cited for other incidents surrounding the match, yet Duran’s celebration was deemed not to violate the federation’s code of conduct.

The ruling did little to soothe Galatasaray’s frustration. Soon, the club’s legal representatives had arrived at the Anadolu Courthouse to file criminal charges, arguing the celebration constituted harassment and indecent exposure, which was a serious escalation that took the conflict out of the football authorities’ hands and into the judicial arena. Whether the courts will take up the case remains uncertain. Football-related celebrations rarely enter criminal territory, and it is unclear whether Duran’s actions will meet the legal threshold that Galatasaray allege. For now, however, the complaint itself adds fresh tension to a rivalry that exists on a perpetual knife-edge.

    What comes next?

Amid the controversy, Fenerbahce’s focus must quickly turn back to the pitch. Duran’s equaliser ensured the gap between the two clubs remains just one point, preserving the narrowest of margins as the season enters a critical phase. The side return to action on Saturday against Istanbul Basaksehir, a fixture that now arrives under the shadow of the derby row. Tedesco will be eager to shield his players from distraction, particularly as Duran has begun to find consistency in his performances following the adaptation period to Turkish football.

Wash-out at Hove leaves Hampshire, Sussex frustrated

No play possible on third day with contest evenly poised

Rain at Hove wrote off the third day’s play•Getty Images

Day three of Sussex’s Championship game against Hampshire at Hove was abandoned without a ball bowled – the first day’s play to be lost this season.Morning showers delayed the start to day three at the 1st Central County Ground and when more persistent rain arrived at lunchtime umpires Nigel Llong and Rob White called play off at 2.15pm with puddles forming on a saturated outfield. Both teams will be hoping for an improvement in conditions tomorrow with Sussex needing 241 runs and Hampshire nine wickets to claim a victory that would ease any fears both counties have of being dragged into a relegation battle.

Rohl could now turn "exciting" Rangers star into his own Shankland at Ibrox

For the first time this season, Rangers have won a home Premiership match; Danny Röhl working wonders already!

On Sunday, the Gers beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Ibrox, with Derek Cornelius breaking the deadlock, only for Killie to equalise on the cusp of half time, but goals from Danilo and Youssef Chermiti after the interval cemented the victory.

This is just the Gers second league victory of the season, beating Livingston at Almondvale in the last minute in September, thereby moving them up to fifth, just five points behind Celtic, albeit still 13 adrift run-away league-leaders Hearts.

New manager Röhl may only have been in situ for a week, but now faces a crucial seven days, with a tricky trip to Hibernian to come on Wednesday, before the small matter of a Glasgow derby at Hampden in the League Cup semi-finals next Sunday.

Ahead of these massive games, has Röhl unearthed an “exciting” talent who could replicate, arguably, the Premiership’s best striker?

Why Rangers should have signed Lawrence Shankland

During the summer, Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Scotland international striker Lawrence Shankland, given that his contract at Heart of Midlothian expired on 30 June.

After only a few days unemployed, Shankland decided to stay at Hearts, signing a new contract on 3 July, and he certainly showed Rangers what they could have had last month, scoring both as the Jambos won 2-0 at Ibrox.

Well, Heart of Midlothian are certainly the talk of Scottish football at this moment in time.

On Sunday, Derek McInnes’ side beat Celtic 3-1 at a raucous Tynecastle, going in front thanks to an early own goal, before quick-fire strikes from Alexandros Kyziridis and then Shankland from the penalty spot cemented a 3-1 victory.

This leaves Hearts eight points clear at the top, looking to become the first non-Old Firm champions of Scotland since Aberdeen 41 years ago, not facing one of the Glasgow giants again until they travel to Celtic Park on 7 December.

Shankland himself has now scored eight goals this season, five of which have come in the Premiership.

In contrast, right-back James Tavernier is the only Rangers player to have scored more than one league goal across their nine fixtures to date.

Thus, the Hearts captain, a boyhood Rangers fan, spotted at Ibrox for April’s Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Club, would unquestionably improve the Gers’ current team, but did Röhl discover his answer to Shankland during Sunday’s match, a forgotten star who could propel Rangers up the table?

Rangers have their own answer to Shankland

Sunday was certainly a memorable afternoon for new signing Youssef Chermiti, scoring his first senior goal since May 2023, but Danilo was the striker who caught the eye.

When he joined the club from Feyenoord for a reported fee of £6m in the summer of 2023, then-manager Michael Beale labelled him an “exciting player who likes to create and score goals”.

Meantime, Melvin Dupper of the Rangers Review described him as ‘quick’ and an ‘amazing instinctive finisher’, praising his work rate and pressing ability, but supporters have seen very little of any of that in the two and a bit years since.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Brazilian has scored just 14 goals in 61 outings for the club, sitting out 65 matches due to injury.

Sunday’s header was just his second goal since netting during the 3-0 demolition of Celtic in January.

Overall, as the table below outlines, Danilo had a very productive afternoon against Kilmarnock, despite limited involvement.

As the table documents, Danilo was not often involved in build-up play, emphasised by the fact he touched the ball just 18 times in 69 minutes on the park, three touches fewer than goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Nevertheless, when his sole opportunity of the afternoon came, he took it, heading past Killie keeper Eddie Beach.

It may be stating the obvious, but having a reliable goalscorer could transform this team, with new manager Röhl attempting to rebuild a sinking ship that has hit rock bottom, following Russell Martin’s catastrophic if only brief reign.

Hearts would not be clear at the top if it wasn’t for the goals scored by Shankland and summer signing Cláudio Braga, with Rangers still searching for their own talisman in attack, following a scattergun summer of recruitment.

New signings Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski look substandard when compared to the pair they are supposed to be replacing, namely Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, so could Danilo, a player they already had, but many had written off, prove to be the centre-forward Röhl can hang his hat on?

Walk-Off Wagers: MLB Best Bets Today (Back the Orioles vs. the Yankees for Plus-Money Tonight)

Am I crazy to be fading the winningest team in baseball at home?  Maybe. But, by now, you know my style, so stay with me for a bit. Our bankroll has been growing.

Yes, the Yankees are the best team in baseball right now and the only team with 50 wins. They will also be sending Nestor Cortes to the mound, and he's been stellar at home.   When pitching at home this season, Cortes has a mere 1.77 ERA. That's dominant.

Juan Soto is back in the lineup, and Aaron Judge is doing Aaron Judge things. He's batting .300 with 26 home runs, which is on pace to match and possibly eclipse his record-setting 62 home run MVP season.

Those are just a few reasons to back the favorites in this game.

Now, hear me out on the case for the underdogs tonight.

MLB Best Bet Today

The Orioles are a frisky young team and just 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. This win would put them within half a game.

They will  Yankee Stadium is not an easy place to play, but it's worth noting that the Orioles have a better win percentage on the road this season (22-10) than they do at home (25-14). It's also worth noting that Baltimore has won three of four games played vs. the Yankees this year and that the Orioles have the second-best win percentage in MLB as away underdogs (6-3).

Albert Suarez takes the mound for the O's tonight.

Suarez has been excellent in his seven starts for Baltimore this season, and he has allowed a minuscule .20 home runs per nine this season across 44 ⅔ innings pitched.  He has an ERA of just 1.61, with a 35% ground ball rate and an 84% strand rate.

Both teams have been hitting well recently, but the Orioles have a league-leading 35 home runs in June and are, particularly good vs. left-handed pitching. The Birds have a .195 ISO vs. southpaws this season.

Look for catcher Adley Rutschman to have success tonight vs. Cortes. The last time he faced Cortes on April 30th, he had a pair of hits, and he is hitting .420 vs. lefties this season.

Cortes allowed four earned runs in that game and took the loss.

So, there you have it. Will the Yankees (-155) win tonight? Maybe.

But it's not a sure enough thing to pay that juice. Give me the O's for plus money (+130).
